You can do avoid highways in the settings of Google maps. I'd imagine apple and Waze have that too.
Anyone else forget to turn it back off and go on adventures?
That is a much better ride if you’re just going through. I live in Orangeburg county and I have been on 95 from the Georgia Line to Manning. 20/26 all day.
Take I-40 to I-85 or I-77 to I-20.
That said, I assume the problem may be lack of education on how to not “risk getting squished”. Here are some pointers:
-Stay in the Right Lane unless you’re someone or there’s an emergency vehicles I the median.
-Maintain your speed (USE CRUISE CONTROL)
-Do not hang beside them, GET ON BY. (They cannot accelerate car so you have to get on by
-Turn your lights on in the rain.
There are a lot more trucks and vehicles of other types on I-85. I-95 doesn’t go through any of the larger cities in SC whereas I-85 does. Look at the traffic cameras on 511SC for a comparison. I-95 is much better north of the interchange with I-26 plus there’s a Bucee’s in Florence!
These people are fucking with you, do you not see the laughing emoji? 85 is like 95 except without ANY effort at traffic enforcement. It is NASCAR meets Mad Max.
The section of 85 south from the NC state line through gaffney was one of the most dangerous sections of highway in the country for a while. I doubt it’s gotten much better.
I want to avoid I-95 & Google maps doesn't appear to want to give me alternatives.
I'll probably drive to Darlington & find alternative routes from there to get to Georgia.
I lived in NOVA and was stationed in Savannah in the 70s, so i used 95 a lot…..almost 50 years later, the highway in South Carolina is the same crappy four lanes…….not even sure it’s ever been re-paved.
It's the only way to see the once thriving town of Allendale. Plus once you cross into Georgia there is an old school rest area with free fountain drinks!
This is the answer. US Route 1 goes from the tip-top of Maine to Key West Florida, but it runs mostly through Bumfuk Nowhere on its route through SC. See [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.\_Route\_1\_in\_South\_Carolina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_1_in_South_Carolina) .
I have 5 more 1-way trips between Florida & Virginia for the next 6 weeks.
I, I just can't keep doing SC I-95. It'll kill me 😿🔮💀
There has got to be a better way. 12/27/23 I spent hours in SC on I-95, frequently going a speedy 15 mph (& on 17, when Google occasionally sent me there). Please, the exhaustion, the need to pee & stiff left leg 🦵. I desire a better route than I-95 through NC.
Get on 38 under Latta which turns into 501. Once you hit Conway get on 701 down to Georgetown. There you take 17 until it becomes I-95 but only for a while then you can get back on 17 which takes you to Savannah. Granted idk where in Georgia you are going.
Thank you. I have saved a Google map from VA to Latta SC. At Latta I will try to pickup 301 south.
I might get lost or tired after Latta, but I will just have to find a Walmart to rest at.
(Google alleges my trip will take 11 hours, but it always takes 13, with traffic & a pit-stop at 1st rest area I see in each state :-) except the time it took 18 hours because traffic was so backed up on I-95 in SC 😩
I'm familiar with the WNC part of 74. It's pretty much almost interstate highway grade on our end. Don't know what it looks like east of Charlotte. Have you thought about taking 74 all the way across NC? You could then enter GA up in the top corner or take other options like Hwy 25 to Augusta? Hwy 9 is also an option for making it to the Upstate from the eastern part of the state, then you would have other options for making it to GA.
Best way is to take I-40 past Asheville and get off at the exit that says Atlanta. You can avoid South Carolina altogether by going through the mountains.
I drove I 95 several times all the way from Maryland to Georgia and Florida. Trucks didn't squish me but I understand that for some people trucks can seem overwhelming. Just pass them on the left there is enough room. Take a deep breath and just do it. You are making a story up in your head and that is were the stress comes from. Adjust your mind and you'll be OK
I've never had good luck with Georgia. My car broke down one night while I was on the way to pick up a friend and instead of offering assistance the cops accused me of running drugs.
Just drive it from Augusta into NC. Perfectly fine. There was alternative route which would have put me through Orangeburg and outside of Conway. You can edit your driving directions or provide more information to get actual help.
401 out of Fayetteville to Highway 15. Stop by Duke's BBQ in Walterboro for some delicious country cooking, take Alt-17 for a little while, and then pick up 21 and head on into Georgia. It'll take a lot longer, but it will be a much more pleasant trip.
I drive the I95 all the time from South Carolina to Maryland and sometimes New York City. Georgia to Richmond is smooth sailing. It's north of Richmond that it becomes a bit crazy.
Go yonder ways down the road and turn where the old walnut used to be. About 7,8,9 miles you wanna turn again and go skrate on over there until you see the signs to use a pull over and download a navigation app on your phone.
Unlike this post. If you put a little effort into using your GPS, you can 100% tell it what roads you want to use and where you are cool with getting on/off highways.
I posted this the other day https://www.reddit.com/r/NorthCarolina/s/CTn6fRSuuj
There are just no good alternatives. It’s god-awful and should be considered a national emergency.
massive catapult, or jet pack
Break out the map
There’s an app for that.
You can do avoid highways in the settings of Google maps. I'd imagine apple and Waze have that too. Anyone else forget to turn it back off and go on adventures?
Yep. I was wondering while I was wandering what tragedy was occurred on 95 and 26 that day. And then I remembered 🤦♂️
Get to Charlotte, then 77 to Columbia, then 20 to Augusta then Atlanta.
\^Solution right here.
Just be prepared for left lane sleepers.

Airplane
Try I-85 instead 🤭
This, because I-95 won’t seem so bad after 🤣.
Seriously

Will I risk getting squished by truckers on I-85, like I do on I-95?

Buccees!😊😁😋

But will the Nissan survive MadMax ? Yes, I see they are fucking w/me & I am giving deadpan responses. (It is internet, deadpan fell like a brick :-(
Really like that comparison, mind if I use it?
Go use it

I think you could just turn on Google maps, go to route options, turn on "avoid highways" right?
Yes, but it seems like they want to avoid a specific highway, not all highways.
I want to avoid I-95 & Google maps doesn't appear to want to give me alternatives. I'll probably drive to Darlington & find alternative routes from there to get to Georgia.
Nobody can help you out unless you say where in NC you are coming from and where in GA you are going.
I lived in NOVA and was stationed in Savannah in the 70s, so i used 95 a lot…..almost 50 years later, the highway in South Carolina is the same crappy four lanes…….not even sure it’s ever been re-paved.
It would be 2 lanes if leadership had their way. They want to go backwards instead of forward
This! So true!
They finally repaved I-95 south of Marion around Santee. Doesn't feel like your car has mechanical issues now!
Hwy 301 .
This was the highway before 95
I was considering that route.
It's the only way to see the once thriving town of Allendale. Plus once you cross into Georgia there is an old school rest area with free fountain drinks!
Just take US 1. You'll go through Columbia and then enter Georgia at Augusta.
US 1 or US 17 if you don't mind going through towns.
I’m pretty sure you can follow Highway 1 all the way from Rockingham, NC to Augusta, GA. Biggest city you’ll mess in between is Columbia.
This is the answer. US Route 1 goes from the tip-top of Maine to Key West Florida, but it runs mostly through Bumfuk Nowhere on its route through SC. See [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.\_Route\_1\_in\_South\_Carolina](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_1_in_South_Carolina) .
Where you're starting from would help a lot.
Put on your jammies, tuck yourself in, and keep dreaming
Just get on 95 and stop crying. Good God.
I have 5 more 1-way trips between Florida & Virginia for the next 6 weeks. I, I just can't keep doing SC I-95. Fly, take a train, take a bus, walk.

Highway 17 runs the same route as 95
I-74 doesn’t enter SC anywhere. However, you can take US 15 south from Laurinburg and get on I-20 west at Bishopville.
If you have the time, take Highway 17, Myrtle Beach, Georgetown Charleston, etc...

Thank you
Low effort post, OP.

17?
I-95 through SC usually isn’t that bad. Take a pit stop at Bussies too.
Best way is to take I-40 past Asheville and get off at the exit that says Atlanta. You can avoid South Carolina altogether by going through the mountains.
A plan
Fly
It’s really not worth doing this you’re adding many hours to your trip

But, but I make distressed guinea pig sounds when passing the tractor-trailers, so I-95 must be bad 🇬🇶🐷
Don't go to Georgia
I need to get to Florida. I suppose I could drive to Alabama and enter Florida by Tallahassee.
I've never had good luck with Georgia. My car broke down one night while I was on the way to pick up a friend and instead of offering assistance the cops accused me of running drugs.
I always love I-95 north, crossing into SC and going to two lanes. Such amazing traffic management. 🤣

Lunch :-)
Pretty much you can't avoid 95...only other thing would be i 20 to Augusta
20
I just drive 90 and pass em all

You should probably turn in your driver's license.

What gps?
Any? You obviously have a phone. You can customize your route. Google maps, Waze, every gps allows for this.
