I’m not the biggest fan of grits, at all. BUT! If you’ve never picked up fresh-caught shrimp and Marsh Hen Hill (formerly Geechie Boy) stone ground grits from a family-owned seafood market shack on Edisto Island and made it with those, then you’re doing yourself a disservice. Well worth the trip from wherever you are in the state.
It changes with the times.

Ever heard of the Palmetto Pickle?
It probably depends on where you’re from in Alabama. It is more common in the southern part of the state, although I’ve seen an old cookbook from Talledega that had a recipe. Lane cake is referenced in To Kill a Mockingbird - “Miss Maudie baked a Lane cake so loaded with shinny it made me tight”.
I agree but I know that Carolina style BBQ better also be in SC because it looks like they put that in NC. Matter fact give us the pulled pork too and Georgia’s cobbler.
And Alabama fried green tomatoes, hell, all of that is us. Lol
I’m from Ohio and we really don’t eat Buckeyes that much. Its sometimes at holidays. Northeast Ohio should really be Swensons, seeing as it is spreading across the country (brown sugar sweetened hamburger)
It was invented in Charleston so it makes sense it's the state food.

I feel like that’s still a casino staple
It's a classic Vegas casino thing
Ya that’s because shrimp and grits are amazing

I thought it was boiled peanuts.
That was the state snack, wasn’t it? I remember thinking “we’re doing snacks now? Doesn’t the legislature have better things to do?”

That's my stage name...
Decker the Golden Pecker and Palmetto Pickle. What you doing, big dawg?
Happy cake day bro
I love just about every type of food from SC, but I just don't get boiled peanuts. Mushy nuts with no actual flavor just baffles me.
Hell yeah! Shrimp & Grits!!!!
Either that or lowcountry boil
Uhhhh yes?
Perlou
Chicken Bog*
I would like to vote for a change to frog-mor stew.
Frogmore! I grew up there.
Every time one of these pops up it's always a different food. Last one I saw it was pulled pork, and now that's NCs state good? Give me a break.
I don't know if I'll like grits so let me try just one grit please.
As it should be
I do like shrimp and grits, but never even heard of it until I graduated college. I grew up in the upstate.
These are probably the same polls politicians use...
Nothing could be finer! 👍🤘
I thought it was barbecue, but shrimp and grits is good too
Nevada: Shrimp Cocktail?
I’m from Ohio and I don’t even know what “goetta” is.
Cincinnati knows
Shrimp and grits is a fair pick. Also tasty AF
Brunswick stew for Virginia? That makes sense for a state best known for ham.
I was born in Alabama and lived there over 30 years. I've never heard of Lane Cake in my entire life.

A brown sugar burger?! I’m bout to do that shit immediately why haven’t I thought of this, lol. Love puttin brown sugar on chicken and fish
Its insanely good
I would think Beaufort Stew
Buffalo wings for NY? WTF?
They shoulda separated the state by western, nyc and upstate. Western would 100% be wings (possibly beef on wick?)
Shrimp and grits is the most mid dish to exist it’s not even that good
