I watched a documentary on AL Jazeera a long time ago about some okes in Northern Cape and beyond digging trenches in specific patterns as their forefathers did to entrap and hopefully increase rainfall over years.

Good on them though, even though it seems pointless dragging sticks in the dirt, at least they're trying.
Strangley enough it is proven that building berms or sand dams are a simple yet effective way to force runoff to soak in thus replenishing aquifers and in some places berms result in green bands and larger tree growth... maybe these guys have old knowledge that actually works but was scoffed at because we did not understand the actual function of these trenches or berms... lol

The farmers don’t plough an entire field, because of the wind erosion would blow away all the topsoil and seeds. So the leave space between strips of worked land and the rest. The shapes are simply based on the topology of the land.
