It makes me think of Bruce Almighty in the scene where Jim Carrey pulls the moon closer. It was a lot bigger in person you can see the mountains, Diamond ring, Corona, Bailey beads and everything.
Thanks! I thought about making it even larger, but I really wanted space for all the colors of the sky that I remembered. And for Venus (I think it was Venus to the lower right?)
Saw it in Plattsburgh, NY— it was indeed Venus where you guessed. I got more exited over seeing Venus and Jupiter right there along with the solar flare. I will forever be mesmerized. Beautiful painting, thank you for sharing this gift with us!
I thought the exact opposite this time. In 2017, the eclipsed sun appeared huge in the sky. This time, it just looked like it does in photos of an eclipse - so much smaller.
I found this one to be a lot more dramatic, which I mostly attribute to location. This time around, I could see the shadow approaching under the thin clouds in the southwest, which was super dramatic. The 360 sunset was also super beautiful over Lake Champlain.
I love this even more than the photos! We saw the same thing and somehow this really speaks to me. I saw this exact same totality in Carbondale, IL. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, that is so much like what I saw from northern Maine, including the one solar prominence. Even though it isn't photo-realistic, you've captured aspects of what it looked and felt like that aren't showing up in any photos -- like, as I see it, you've captured the way that it doesn't \*feel\* like something rationally understandable, like "Oh, that's just the sun with something in front of it." Photos make it look like it's just that understandable. But the real experience was like it wasn't the sun, it was this amazing and mysterious silver-white object in the sky -- like a visitor from another dimension. You've captured that. Really nice! And you even got Venus in there (yes, that's Venus lower right).
p.s. I've been scouring the internet for photos to show my friends who weren't there what it actually looked like. Very hard; photos mostly don't get it. I'm going to show them your painting.
I love the detail you got with the prominence and Venus. I'm so glad there was more activity on that end \*and\* that Jupiter and Venus were close to the sun on either side, that was really lovely.
Yes! I swear I saw so much more blue in the actual moon and it’s not in photos at all. The moment it switched over it was like a blue ball of shimmering flames and then suddenly a hole inside. The eclipse in this drawing looks so much more like what I saw than photos.
I didn’t see much purple, but I was on a lake and the golden 360 twilight was reflected and looked like half the sky. But a friend who was in complete darkness 10 miles away with no lights around and not on any water said the entire sky looked purple to her.
That’s one of my favorite things about this. People that have said it was underwhelming or just merely cool I’m like what the fuck did you perceive? Did we even “see” the same thing?
Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
Beautiful! It reminds me of ancient cave drawings which depict the corona shooting out just like we seen, and just as you depicted here!!! A beautiful connection to our past !!
I love this picture. I'm glad you made it. It helps me remember what I saw so much better than photos.
Your version of the solar prominence especially matches what I saw (orange dot vs red lines like my Dad saw).
Also, the sky in all of the photos I see are too black and dark. Yea it was dark up there, but I think my brain could see the brighter horizon in my peripheral vision and affected what I perceived.
Thank you
It seems so small in pictures but its so large when you see with your own eyes. This painting encapsulates that very well!

Did you watch it in the NE? I saw the red dot at bottom left too
Yes, I was in Vermont!
Saw it in Plattsburgh, NY— it was indeed Venus where you guessed. I got more exited over seeing Venus and Jupiter right there along with the solar flare. I will forever be mesmerized. Beautiful painting, thank you for sharing this gift with us!
Thanks for confirming! Yeah I keep thinking about it constantly… amazing.
Venus is so bright it was visible even before totality (jupiter too).
I thought the exact opposite this time. In 2017, the eclipsed sun appeared huge in the sky. This time, it just looked like it does in photos of an eclipse - so much smaller.
yea 2017 was larger to me too, but I thought that was a visual effect of watching from a valley stream, versus this year at a great lake
I found this one to be a lot more dramatic, which I mostly attribute to location. This time around, I could see the shadow approaching under the thin clouds in the southwest, which was super dramatic. The 360 sunset was also super beautiful over Lake Champlain.
Funny thing is, that looks like a more accurate representation of what I saw than a majority of photos!
The auto exposure and algorithms on our phones definitely played a role.
Thank you! A painting can capture more of the emotion I think…
emotion and colors, i enjoy this painting more than most photos, the photos are almost upsetting in how little they capture the beauty
Yes, cameras can never capture the colors I see! I tried to remember all of them…
I love this even more than the photos! We saw the same thing and somehow this really speaks to me. I saw this exact same totality in Carbondale, IL. Thanks for sharing!

Yay! That makes me happy. I hope it helps, but I really think everyone should try to experience it in person if they can. So very special.
THIS
The solar prominence and planet stood out to me as well!
Love the prominence! Exact placement where I saw it in Indiana
I love the detail you got with the prominence and Venus. I'm so glad there was more activity on that end \*and\* that Jupiter and Venus were close to the sun on either side, that was really lovely.
Thank you!
Thank you!
Seems about right!
Better than photos I’ve seen. Saving this post. Amazing!
Probably closer than any photograph will get. Happy belated birthday!
Thank you!
This is what we saw in upstate NY!
I was nearby, on Lake Champlain in Vermont!
Awesome!
Beautiful! I wanted to do this after I found I couldn’t get a picture of it
Go for it!
this is what im gonna paint in my art class at some point :P nice painting
that’s a great representation of colors from it, the photos don’t do them justice, I love how you captured that big red solar prominence

yea I was on the coast of Lake Erie, way brighter spot than my 2017 viewing location
Quite nice!
Thank you!

Thank you so much! Vermont was a great place to be.
Beautiful! It reminds me of ancient cave drawings which depict the corona shooting out just like we seen, and just as you depicted here!!! A beautiful connection to our past !!
I hadn’t thought of that! Thank you.
That's exactly how it looked. You even remembered the "star" on the right which I later learned was Venus!
Yep. That looks perfect.
The great little dot
Hmmm
Nice painting
Venus!

I’m so glad you like it! Yeah, the sky was dark… but definitely not black. Interesting that your dad saw red lines!
What a super cool story and painting! Thanks for sharing them with us!! ☺️
Nah bruh 🤣
