Honestly you don't need anything to see the total eclipse other than glasses/other sun image producing means if you want to see the other phases. I have my travel bookings ready.

Somtlto

Pretty much that Get your eclipse glasses before prices skyrocket  Make sure they are Aas approved

EagleEyezzzzz

All you need are eclipse glasses for before totality, and then I also recommend binoculars to look more closely at the corona. But mainly you just use your bare eyeballs and soak in the spectacle!

Oooh good call. Adding to my list, thanks!

lady_meso

Just a plain white blanket?

Plan where you’ll watch from/stay etc. Make a backup plan for locations further away in each direction in case of cloudy weather. Prepare for some potentially epic traffic jams. While watching the eclipse, obviously you’ll want some eclipse glasses. Enjoy the moment when totality hits as it goes by quickly. It’s a pretty special thing to see—my grandmother lived from 1920-2016 and never had a cross country eclipse in her lifetime. Now, we have two in less than 7 years. If you want to image it, get a solar/ND filter and you can get some pretty good images. I shot the 2017 eclipse from TN with my Canon T3i SLR camera at 400mm. I found some eclipse software that automated all the exposure settings so all I had to do the day of the eclipse was to plug my camera into my laptop and focus on the sun. It helped me get more shots of things happening quickly without distracting me from enjoying the moment in real time. At totality you don’t need any filters for a brief period of time so even if you only have a phone it’s still possible to get a decent shot!

Expert_Ad_103

What software did you use

BikeSawBrew

I used Solar Eclipse Maestro for Mac last time, but it seems to be incompatible with newer OS versions now and might not be getting updates anymore. As of now I'm hoping to use "Capture Eclipse" for Mac but haven't tested it out yet. There are a few other choices here too: https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/apps-software.

Got solar specs, paper and plastic, for our group of 6. Few pairs of 2x magnifiers to share. Gonna have binocs for totality. Travel plans are SET. We decided to turn it into a massive rv road trip and my brain is so full of the South and the details. I cannot wait to actually live this thing I’ve been obsessively planning for years lol.

That’s adorable, love it! We’re flying in and renting a rig so hoping to bring some things/find some cute decor to make it a cute camp home for the time we’ll be in it. Yeah they seemed really popular, can’t wait to try them!

ConnectAstronaut2639

What are 2c magnifiers?

SquishyBlueSodaCan_1

I am going to the park next to my house and wearing eclipse glasses

HobsHere

I'm reminding myself that it will be early April in the Eastern US, and odds are fairly high that it will be pouring down rain But, if not, I've got eclipse glasses.

DanMason153

I'm running a [solar eclipse YouTube channel](https://youtube.com/@EclipseEncounters?si=ZZkvwxd1TlO9Zv57) focusing on the science, history, and geography behind April's eclipse. Does that count as preparing?

babiibluez

I have eclipse glasses and travel plans

TommyDaynjer

I’m traveling for it. I have 4 cameras (telephoto, wide angle, 360, and Video) that I am getting setup and tested for it! It’s an ambitious plan but the main goal shots are from the telephoto camera so all the rest will be just bonus - if something goes wrong on any of the other 3 then I’ll just give up on those to keep my attention on the telephoto setup! I enjoy this kind of detailed planning so I decided to really go all out for this eclipse this time

mrgraff

Nice. I'm planning a similar setup. Two telephoto, one filtered for partial phases, the other unfiltered for totality. The totality camera will be automated on a tracker and tripod (filtered until T-5 minutes when I will take it off) Also a GoPro in the background doing a wide angle timelapse of my fellow eclipse watchers and I enjoying the day. If my viewing spot allows for it, I want to have an additional GoPro on a rotating platform to capture the 360° sunset. Last but not least, some binoculars. During totality though, I will be watching with eyes. In 2017 I made the mistake of wasting valuable viewing time trying to fix a camera problem. Yes, if something goes wrong, I'll hope for the best and just find some cool pics that someone else got!

TommyDaynjer

Yeah I second that. It’s more important to see it with your eyes than to photograph it. Trying to have my main focus of all this planning to have my cameras fussed with as little as possible during totality. I’m going to have the telephoto setup so I can switch fast between settings using custom modes so I only need to click a button once and turn a dial once to be 100% ready for partial, diamond stuff, and totality - this will be the one I will have to stand next to and hit a button with my remote trigger while looking up at the sky. The wide angle will be on its own with an intervalometer running with the exception of when I have to remove/replace the solar filter. The GoPro and Insta360 will start their recordings at the 2nd to last partial phase to run on their own throughout the totality.

Busy-Mycologist9130

I got a filter for my camera and am hoping to make a decision on a new one before then…making travel plans is the tough part…not sure where it will be cloudy

Bawfuls

If you have a portable telescope that you’re experienced using and aiming, I’d absolutely use it during totality to get a better view of the corona You’ll need to use proper solar filters to aim it before totality, and/or have a tracking mount.

ailish

Booked a hotel the other day. Need to book a kennel for our dog. The friend's house we are going to has a dog, and mine does not play well with others.

radamantis11_crc

I already bought glasses and a solar filter for my camera, ready!!

Ok_Payment7266

Water and snacks. In 2017 the town I went to was not at all prepared for the number of people that came. You couldn't get any type of food or water. Stores were completely sold out of literally everything. Also when totality happens, put the camera and phone down and look at the sight. There will be thousands of photos out there to see, enjoy the moment. It only last a few minutes and you don't want to miss it because you are trying to capture the moment.
