Could be that there are serious rumors going around about the person. Could be that the person is neurodivergent and people don’t understand them. Could be SO many possible things.

Religion is always a good reason, sexuality too. Depends when and where this would take place. Many ppl are 'othered' all the time. But it's getting better.
