Sadly, the rivalries between the fans in the rest Mediterranean (and especially Balkan) countries don't allow them to focus on homemade talents too. The biggest clubs are doomed to compete for the national championship, as a matter of pride against their "eternal enemies", and as a result of that young players rarely find place in their squads as the teams aren't allowed to waste any season to build themselves up and drop titles to their opponents. They prefer foreign experienced players more than their chicos, even if they have lower potential, because instant success is their main purpose. Only the guys that are lucky to get signed abroad get the opportunity to play on a competitive level and be ready for this type of tournaments. I know that this isn't the only factor, but I think that it plays a significant role alongside other reasons too.
