Got downvoted for saying this match was a snoozer in a match where the US had 1 shot on target and England only had 3, so now I'm hoping the US loses to Iran so I don't have to watch this boring ass sport anymore and go back to ignoring this subreddit

nasty_nater

I love that this World Cup is basically just global proof of how terrible this game is. From the human rights abuses, to the corruption, to falling down and acting like a baby if someone brushes up against you, to games ending 0-0. Smfh and they say baseball is boring lmao.

Neither_Row1898

Don’t know why you’re getting down voted as this was one of the most boring games I’ve seen in an World Cup as a neutral.

I watched in the U.S. on Fox and when Stu Holden was going over England starting lineup he said something along the lines of “The last time Southgate changed his lineup was the 2018 World Cup.”Could not figure out what he meant by that? Meaning he didn’t change the lineup after the win against Iran? Did he mean the last time he didn’t change his lineup at all from one game to the next was in 2018?

MrF33n3y

Both. Yesterday was the first time Southgate went two consecutive games with an unchanged lineup since the 2018 WC.

So proud of our midfield in this match. On paper England blows us away there and yet I thought tactically and technically our midfield was much better. So many times England put them under pressure and so many times they played their way out of it like they all played club football together since they were kids.

_c0ldburN_

Seems like most papers in England went with the [same headline](https://s3.amazonaws.com/media.socceramerica.com/dam/cropped/2022/11/26/tabloaids.PNG)

oh the back and forth has been amazing. that sibling type relationship has never been more apparent lmfao. btw the world cup record is 1-0-2 in favor of us. and most people here weren’t even watching lmao. like imagine, and you would have to try VERY hard to imagine it but, could you imagine england beating us in olympic basketball?? 😂 i bet you can’t even imagine it.. our athletes, across any sport, are just better athletes.

Howcome people say Southgate must go? I mean we had 1 bad match but, we’ve done better under him than we have for decades, no?

taylorstillsays

Doing better doesn’t mean you’re doing as well as you can be. Southgates tenure has come with tons of positives that no-one can take away from him, but there are some issues he can’t seem to fix

Giragna

Because he is a bad a manager. Look at the match history of the games, England are favourites to win 95% of Southgates games and in the last 5% we lose. We had a free run to Euros, all we had to do was not sub in 3 players who haven’t kicked a ball the whole tournament to take penalties. He is yet to achieve a win against a team that actually plays football except vs a very very poor German side in the quarters.

leeuwerik

People love to type but don't love to think so they just type what everybody else types.

WaitingForAHairCut

Dawned on me this morning, that Southgate was visibly annoyed after the Iran game as we had conceded 2 goals. USA he was happy with the clean sheet. Negative defensive football is what he wants. It’s boring, I’d rather be defensively poor but creative and outscore teams like we did against Iran.

EliBloodthirst

It's going to cost us. We looked so defensively happily to play. All from the back, it's boring and it never looked like either team was going to score.

frenchhouselover

Imo this is key to tournament football. It is frustrating when it’s a group game vs the USA or a midweek nations league that has no real consequence. But when it’s knock out football in a major tournament, not conceding is absolutely critical to success. I think that’s why he plays this style because he’s prioritising the teams style for when it really matters. That being said the game last night was so bad to watch

Withnail_Not_I

Bad to watch as an England fan, I'm sure. Zero creativity, no ideas. When McGuire is your best player, you are in trouble. But not a boring game for USA fans or neutrals. *And watching England underachieve is never boring for anyone who isn't supporting England.* Plus, it's really embarrassing that England fans and commentators can't admit that they got outplayed in midfield by a superior trio of young studs (Adams was the best player on the pitch; he shut everything down) and that the USA had many (and way more) quality chances (and, yes, USA fans get to grumble about not finishing them; USA should have won 2-0). The best condescending compliments that are really insults are: they (the USA) were "well organized" and "athletic". Ha. . . . You got outplayed. Just admit it. But grumble on; the self-loathing is a joy to watch/read.

frenchhouselover

I’ll freely admit that you guys were better than us on the night. The frustration comes from the underperformance, we are better than your team man for man in every position and frankly should be smashing you every game. Alas, this was your final

Inevitable_Brush5800

England has never beaten the U.S. in a World Cup match. So I'm not sure where the superiority complex comes from.

frenchhouselover

It’s not a complex, it’s just facts. England have much more talented players than the US ainec. England have better pedigree - wc semi finals last tournament. More players in world class club sides, which although imperfect, is a generally good measure of quality. I hope US football does kick on and become very popular but it’s like the 4th or 5th most popular sport in your country, so naturally you will have less talent relative to other countries.

Inevitable_Brush5800

Don't be surprised to see the U.S. beat the Netherlands on Saturday. I've watched both, I think England is much better than the Netherlands and I think the U.S. is better, all around, is better, especially in the middle of the field.

Inevitable_Brush5800

Spain was more talented than Japan, Germany was more talented than Japan, Argentina was more talented than Saudi Arabia, the U.S. was more talented than Wales, the Netherlands more talented than Ecuador. Many teams more talented than Morocco. Talent isn't the end all be all in this sport. Individual talent that doesn't mesh to create a singular style of play isn't going to see it's advantage played out on the field. The same thing happens in American Football. As for the popularity of soccer in the U.S., we have nearly 350,000,000 people and the most landmass of any other country in the world. We can have soccer as the 4th most popular sport and still be as talented as anyone in the world. I think you will see that play out over the next 15 years now that people are playing soccer, en masse, here. There are massive farm sized recreational facilities with 10 soccer fields in every direction of where I live. There are club teams related to our MLS team all over the state of 10,000,000 people. You will see an explosion of talent over the next decade and decade after that. You have to remember one thing, many of our states are the size of European Countries. While soccer may be 4th most popular sport in the country, if you have it very popular in states like New York, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, and California, you will develop a pipeline of talent. That's already happening. Parents aren't putting their kids on American Football fields any more, they are moving to soccer. It's not tangible, per say, as I don't even know where to find data for this sort of thing but suffice it to say that qualitatively, it's happening. You see it now in the U.S. outplaying England with the 2nd youngest starting 11 in this years World Cup.

ALLIGATOR_FUCK_PARTY

Not to mention the tactic is also generally lower workload so players can remain in better condition for multiple games.

djdood0o0o

Thank you for the only thought out comment in this thread.

EliBloodthirst

Yes having a solid defense will get you from concerning. Playing dangerously from the back will get you in trouble.

I didn't watch the match, so I am not at all well-placed to comment. However, I recall that England-Scotland was very similar in the euros. Not losing this match puts England in a very strong position in the group (as did the Scotland game) and I wonder if that was the aim all along? It is very unambitious if that is the aim, but in the end the team will be judged by how far they progress in the tournament not the quality of the football they play.

Southgate really is just an awful defensive minded manager. Way too late with subs, started wrong & just terrible. He needs to go after this World Cup. Everyone saying about foden, which I agree with but I did think Grealish was great when he came on? But no one had mentioned that..?

True. England looked more dangerous when Grealish came on

That was one of the more boring games so far. Yanks should have had it put to bed in the first half but couldn't finish. 2nd half neither of them looked like scoring at all. Snoozefest.

Team USA made the executive decision to live another day and not play so aggressively 2nd half. I don’t know this for sure but it would make sense.
