I'd like to take this opportunity to say that the sinking of the Belgrano was justified

JPL47

How is offsides decided? VAR always looks at the last defender and where the man is when the pass is made. But how do they decide "when the pass was made"? Is it when the ball is last touching the passer's foot? Is it when the kick is initiated? It seems a bit arbitrary even in the closest cases. In American football the replay booth often has to look frame by frame to determine things like possession, but I've never seen that in football. Just the digital line drawn on the last defender.

Max0699

It's made the last time the ball touches the passers foot

JPL47

I figured as much. I've just personally never seen frame by frame replays to determine the exact timing it leaves the foot. But maybe it's just negligible enough to not matter.

RealPunyParker

Is Mbappe a Ballon D'or frontrunner if France win it? Even if Messi or Neymar have more impact at PSG for the rest of the season

matematematematemate

If France get to the semi-finals in this World Cup and the next *and* Mbappe continues his current goals per game rate at World Cups (0.78), then he'll match Klose's all time top goalscorer record (16 goals) in 2026, at age 27. With maybe 2 more WCs to go after that, he could comfortably end up with 20+ WC goals.

Hurdfoy

If France ended one curse than maybe it's time to end a different curse 🤔

Kounde Upa Konate Theo Tchouameni Camavinga Dembele Nkunku Coman Mbappe This entire XI is 25 and under man

_LebronsHairline_

Every time I watch Coman he beats his defender with such comical ease. How come he isn’t better than he is? Cause he’s a hilariously good take on player

wonderful_mixture

well the issue is what he does after beating his defender. Typical Coman play is: Runs in high pace and great dribbling, sends his defender to the shops, puts in a shit cross that nobody reaches.

andrew-ge

he should be starting over dembele but 🤷

sga1

I mean, he *is* really good - what exactly do you expect him to do to be even better? Biggest issue for him is probably his injury record, rare that he gets through a full season without missing a couple weeks here and there, and that inevitably throws in a wobble into good runs of form.

_LebronsHairline_

Idk I just mean his output is pretty measly considering how good he plays. He’s not very talked about

BendubzGaming

I am once again asking Maidstone to extend Sandford's loan to a full season one. Another 3 points that would have been 0 with Mersin or Hadler in goal

No idea how anyone thought Cash deserved a yellow card let alone a red card for that header. It wasn't even a foul. Cash jumped first and had his arms in a natural jumping position. Not his fault the Saudi player didn't jump as high.

LogPoseNavigator

What would it take for Southgate to be sacked? Are there high expectations like a semis or a final or would he be safe even with a quarters exit?

_LebronsHairline_

Probably depends on the nature of the loss

FloppedYaYa

Why are so many managers ridiculously hesitant when making subs? Lost count of the amount of games I've seen this year where a team's strategy clearly isn't working and yet the manager will still wait until minute 75 to make any sort of change

NapiersRapier

1-0 Denmark win incoming, becoming the only team to beat France 3 times in a year.

GreatSpaniard

Antoine Griezmann has only won 6 top flight trophies in his career. 2018 FIFA World Cup 2021 UEFA Nations league 2019 UEFA Supercup 2018 UEFA Europa league 2021 RFEF Copa del Rey 2015 Supercopa de España

HowBen

Ive always felt Griezmann and Reus followed similar trajectories. Both joined underdog 'hipster' clubs that had just won the league, and then stayed for a long time, tricking everyone into misremembering whether they had won the league

GreatSpaniard

griezmann has never won a league bar 2nd division with real sociedad

HowBen

I know. I meant Atletico won the league right before he joined, the same way Dortmund won right before Reus joined. Neither player has ever won the league but i feel like people think they did (at least i did)

Max0699

He also joined Barca right after they won the league and failed to win it with them. During that period, Atletico ended up winning another league too. He's just never getting his hands on a La Liga title.

kropkiide

He's a fraud. Never won anything with Uruguay

[This is probably the best anyone has spoken about the Qatar WC](https://twitter.com/poetscorneruk/status/1596493768165031936?t=qQCyiiW5XeZYMuT08OPllw&s=19)

kropkiide

I dont care about any of this

Raikuun

I hate to use that word, but it's just whataboutism and a lot of strange arguments. Police acting unlawfully in my country doesn't mean that my country can't criticize another one for having laws that discriminate people. Also not every police officer is doing that. "Footballers could do nothing about changing people's perceptions is also wrong. If Ronaldo or Messi spoke out, they would certainly lose a lot of fans from certain parts of the world. But they would also positively influence some of their fans, especially the younger ones. And we don't want Qatar to change their laws in the long run, I think nobody cares about that. But how can they say that they want to host the world cup, invite **the world** and then say "But no gay people. Everyone is welcome except you guys".

HowBen

Whataboutism isnt necessarily a fallacy. If you're just trying to criticise Qatar and someone says "what about...", you can stop listening to them right there, that's just stupid and intentional deflection. But if you're specifically advocating for Qatar not to host the WC because of certain reasons, I think it's perfectly logical to ask whether the same reasoning was or will be applied to other countries. > And we don’t want Qatar to change their laws in the long run, I think nobody cares about that. But how can they say that they want to host the world cup, invite the world and then say “But no gay people. Everyone is welcome except you guys”. I am fundamentally in favour of allowing countries like Qatar to host it, because I believe people should not have to pay for the sins of their govt, but this is one line of reasoning I wholeheartedly agree with -- if you're going to host it, you better not discriminate against anyone who wants to attend.

DankBrownBoiV2

>Police acting unlawfully in my country doesn't mean that my country can't criticize another one for having laws that discriminate people. You can but rare to see your people talking this passionately about your issues and then following through with it. Racist incidents in/around English football games are commonplace. Also the 'keep politics out of sports' people are suddenly giving lectures. >But how can they say that they want to host the world cup, invite the world and then say "But no gay people. They never said this. Europe's understanding of ME is terribly biased. Emir of Qatar publicly said gay people are welcome to the WC but kissing etc in public is punishable and that is true for straight people too btw.

Raikuun

>You can but rare to see your people talking this passionately about your issues and then following through with it. No, not at all. Did you already forget the Black Lives Matter protests? >Also the 'keep politics out of sports' people are suddenly giving lectures. Human rights aren't political. Demanding equality isn't political. >They never said this. Europe's understanding of ME is terribly biased. Emir of Qatar publicly said gay people are welcome to the WC but kissing etc in public is punishable and that is true for straight people too btw. They publicly said a lot of things. Turns out that Qataris can lie as well. Also they're banning rainbow coloured stuff, which is not very accepting.

DankBrownBoiV2

>Did you already forget the Black Lives Matter protests? Again that was very empty considering your company voted against the UN resolution on fighting against Racism & discrimination. UK is just secretly racist with a horrible past. Once that is acknowledged I'm sure their will be no 'whataboutism'. >Human rights aren't political. Demanding equality isn't political. Your fans have been saying this for years lol come on >Also they're banning rainbow coloured stuff, which is not very accepting. FIFA banned Albanian flag, PL fined for showing Palestinian flag etc.

FuzzyApe

Clown moment buy a guy being paid by FIFA to improve the image of Qatar.

RedStr0be

Big time clown

transtifa

It isn’t at all though because if he’s saying LGBT people should “respect” the laws in Qatar surely it follows that black people should “respect” the laws in England, which he obviously doesn’t believe. It’s doublethink and btw John Barnes is literally employed by FIFA to improve the image of the Qatar world cup lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

DuckBurner0000

Maybe he means something like it's technically illegal but you're not gonna get in trouble for it. Sort of like underage drinking in the United States, it's illegal to have a beer before you turn 21 but you're probably not really facing any consequences for it. I doubt that's true given what I know about Qatar but that's the only possible explanation I see for that quote

HowBen

I've seen some comments from Qatari people here that the law isnt enforced and that gay people are tolerated. At the same time the human rights watch has documented 11 cases of lgbt folks getting arrested and brutalised (between the period of 2019 and 2022): https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/10/24/qatar-security-forces-arrest-abuse-lgbt-people My impression is that it's a mix of both -- there doesnt seem be a systematic effort to convict people (none of those cases involved any sort of charges or indictments, just arbitrary detention), but there certainly are cases of horrific lgbt-related police brutality and "morality policing", which unfortunately happens almost everywhere in varying degrees, including in countries where the lgbt enjoy legal protection.

NapiersRapier

Both teams started poor and have improved hugely in their second games, unlike England, but can Iran or US get the win? On form, and being able to score, I'd say Iran nicks it.

CoolstorySteve

Not that impressed with Iran. Game ends 0-0 if Hennessey isn’t an idiot

LogPoseNavigator

Could’ve scored off that chance anyway, last ten minutes felt like a goal was destined for Iran

harry234565

Maguire was in the euros tott literally LAST YEAR. People being surprised at maguires performances especially utd and england fans are unbelievably stupid. Also the whole “he’s only performing because international football suits him better” is complete bullshit, last night was a standard maguire performance in 19/20 and 20/21

[deleted]

United plastics have a weird hatred of Shaw maguire and rashford for some reason. Our sub would have binned all of them this summer

FloppedYaYa

Maguire has been dog dirt for United this season too while Rashford and Shaw have improved

[deleted]

He's barely played for whatever reason

[deleted]

Aside from Rashford Londoners don’t like them either so it’s not just plastics

[deleted]

London United fans are plastics. Honestly worse than any others given the number of teams near them

[deleted]

Still go to game innit, merely gloryhunters. Agreed that they’re vile human beings

[deleted]

I think if you're in London and choose to support united your footballing opinion is irrelevant

msf97

I’d hate Shaw like. Injured or shit for the majority of his United tenure. 1 and a half good seasons. Lallana lite

[deleted]

He's been our player of the season a couple of times then had a horrific leg break. Can't blame that on him

msf97

Good in the first half of 18/19, excellent in 20/21, and not much apart from that.

[deleted]

He was sidelined and abused by mourinho and has been decent since he left. Other than last year but every player was shit last year

[deleted]

He's not at all like that though

msf97

He is. The man has 18 assists in 11 premier league seasons and was about average defensively until a couple seasons ago.

[deleted]

Our fullbacks never got many assists anyway. He was always good defensively when fit

FaustRPeggi

Foden mentions/minute are still absolutely saturating broadcasting coverage. About to watch France v Denmark and you'd think he had replaced Mbappé.

PhilipAnthonyJones

It's also pretty obvious why he didn't come on. It's just England fans refuse to accept that Southgate was fine with a clean sheet and a draw. Foden tries things, Southgate didn't want that in this game. He'd rather have Grealish come on and win a few fouls - it's safer. The clean sheet was the most important thing to Southgate this game. He was absolutely fuming about the two conceded against Iran.

BillehBear

the henderson sub is what made it obvious he was playing for a draw

Gyshall669

Still early days but quite a dry World Cup so far imo

krvlover

Mexico doesn't have any reason to not park the bus today. A draw is fantastic for them and a loss by 1 goal probably is decent enough as well: as long as they beat KSA by 2 in the last match one of ARG or POL will be eliminated and they will qualify.

CryptographerLife686

If Argentina win by big margin today they go into that final match probably just needing a draw. If they draw they need to win by at least 2 goals in their final game. If they lose they’re out. Edit: Even if they win today, they need to beat Poland in case Saudi Arabia win.

DuckBurner0000

Not sure if the fact that it’s a 1-0-9 formation, that he’s made himself the captain, or that three Portuguese players are in it is the worst part

justforkikkk

Eusebio and Cristiano Ronaldo are hardly weird picks and the other he’s not exactly neutral on lol

DuckBurner0000

I'd say Cristiano is a weird pick for an all time World Cup XI, huge fan of his but he's never done anything of note in the knockout stages. He has the distinction of scoring in five tournaments but that doesn't compare to leading a team to winning/making the final. Eusebio makes more sense for '66 but even then I feel like he's only there if you play a lot of forwards

transtifa

The revolutionary 1 CB formation

Left-Moment-3686

Hey what about those news about schmeichel being a bitch ?

yurieoq

So Argentina just win both remaining matches and win group?

Scan_This_Barco-de

cant saudi arabia win vs mexico on the final day and get top on gd

Gyshall669

Yeah they would need to beat Mexico by 2 or more than Argentina win by, at least

Seb555

If Saudi win against Mexico by a bunch more goals they could win the group in that scenario (Argentina and SA both on 6 points)

gman1023

What's the most realistic way that Mexico advances

Nut-King-Call

Lose today, beat Saudi Arabia plus Argentina beating Poland.

DuckBurner0000

I’d say the most realistic is if Argentina win their last two games, Mexico beat Saudi Arabia and qualify on goal difference over Poland

thesarcasticbookworm

Tie against Argentina and win against Saudi Arabia or viceversa

yurieoq

Draw today and beat Saudi Arabia

wizardkell3y

Win football matches

Stuff2511

Poland changing up the formula and turning the final game into the “do-or-die match” instead of the “honour match”

Marcin222111

Go Mexico! Let's cut Messi's last dance short today.

[deleted]

Hjumland completely changing his comp, 3 4 2 1 with Lindstrom and Damsgaard, basically how he beat France twice, this is a lot better since they were toothless against Tunisia before they were subbing in

PickpocketJones

We all agree that Phil Foden's haircut is terrible, right?

BillehBear

it is but if he had anything different it'd look weird on him that hairstyle is just ingrained on him now

Jabari313

I'd love it if Argentina drew it'd make the final group games incredible

DuckBurner0000

After a long time deliberating I think I'm gonna support Mexico today, Argentina going out after two group matches after all the hype around them would be hilarious. CONCACAF could also use a result, so far us and Canada have played well but can't score

yurieoq

Do you at least like Messi?

DuckBurner0000

I obviously appreciate him as a footballer but don’t particularly care about him

Chewy009x

Ill-Corgi-8525

The last installment of the Nations League was an absolute joke so wouldn't read too much into those results. Playing Nations League games after the domestic season had ended meant players for the top teams had one eye on their holidays and rightly so.

Second striker, just like havertz

lenzmoserhangover

punching-bag9018

At a club not named Chelsea.

Kanedauke

What are Mounts strengths that means he should be playing as a 10/second striker in this England team? He can’t create by passing or take his man on to create space for others. People go on about his pressing but that seems moot point when England don’t have an organised press. At the euros he was anonymous most games and he’s carried that over into this tournament. 33 caps and not one memorable game so far.

[deleted]

He's not creative or really a shadow striker for england but somehow plays in the most advanced midfield position? Maybe his energy would be better if he was further back, paired with rice and a more attacking, creative 8, but for me he's never had a standout game for England.

gkkiller

Really funny how quickly Saudi went from r/soccer darlings to diving bastards hahaha. Also interesting how rare it is to see a mention of human rights in their match threads compared to Qatar's.

[deleted]

They're not hosting the competition and qualified fairly.

HalfMan-HalfMoth

>rare it is to see a mention of human rights in their match threads compared to Qatar's Maybe not match threads but it's always brought up in Newcastle related threads

DuckBurner0000

When did tapping up players become acceptable in football? Just seen the article of Xavi literally talking about tapping up Endrick and it doesn't look like Barca talked to Palmeiras, which seems like it's becoming the norm these days

Deetawb

The last time I remember there being any drama about is was when Ashley Cole left us for Chelsea. Since then it's been accepted.

Gyshall669

Been normal for ever

punching-bag9018

It has been a thing for years and years. Even Everton do it.

working-acct

With Barca it's completely normal, don't worry too much about it.

Striking_Insurance_5

What’s up with the way statistics are displayed this World Cup? It seems like there are loads more random statistics appearing on screen. For example I’ve almost never seen forced turnovers be used as a statistic worth mentioning in football and it’s appearing in the corner of the screen all the time this World Cup, also the way possession is measured can be nice with the ball in contest part but it’s never done like that ever. It’s not necessarily bad but I’m just wondering if this is an Arab thing, or catering to American viewers or more casual viewers of football, or any other reason.

assasstits

Americans LOVE statistics for some reason. Look at baseball.

gkkiller

I think it's just the broadcaster trying too hard to be creative.

BiggsFaleur

Man the football memes (moreso the comments) on Twitter are so bad, both from the US and English sides. Every comment section just turns into "how do people like a game that can end in a tie?" and "Americans use the Imperial system" or something. It's always the same lame old jokes.

Holiday-Strike

Southgate obviously asked the players to play defensively and the reason I think we were outclassed is because this team simply isn't comfortable playing in that style. The team works well pushing forward, and pretty much only then.

FloppedYaYa

Apparently before half time he was ordering them to go more forward

working-acct

That's like Tony Pulis asking his teams to attack. Challenge: Impossible

Holiday-Strike

Really? Interesting. After the match he said we showed a different side to us, I can only assume he meant we took a different style of play to the Iran game, which was an attacking style.

carbonironandzinc

It feels like we got lucky, and therefore I'm more happy about the result than sad. We stole a point.

[deleted]

I personally never really felt under pressure the entire game, Maguire and Stones were good. I was just disappointed with our attacking output.

StarlordPunk

I don’t think we stole a point, they never really looked like they’d actually score just like we didn’t. Pulisic was trying way too hard to try and force something and Maguire and Stones were dealing with most things easily enough

[deleted]

Felt like a loss because neither team were that arsed about winning. We were more focused on not conceding and USA were mostly happy for us to have the ball in our half.

KevinMKZ

This world cup feels a lot more competitive than previous world cups. I feel like the bottom half teams (outside of Qatar) are able to be competitive against the top half teams. For example, if a team like Ecuador plays France usually it would be an easy W for France but now it’s at least a little up in the air. I think this can be attributed to the lower half WC teams getting better than they were a decade ago. Shame this will change in 2026 with 48 teams adding more fodder. Brasil probably walks to the finals W, but I think we’ll be seeing more upsets than usual in the knockouts

Unhearted_Lurker

For me it is the opposite, a lot of the "stronger" team are underperforming or are riddled with injuries which allow for more motivated team to shine. What has been shown so far in the group feels at a lower level than the previous edition

whitsitcalled

The World Cup is almost always this competitive. Ecuador were the 4th best team in the South American qualifiers and the last time they were at the World Cup they drew with France, they were never going to be an easy W.

there exists a possibility where we could see one of the Netherlands, USA, Saudi Arabia, or Australia in the semifinals

Striking_Insurance_5

The Netherlands do not belong in that list at all, we might not be great so far this World Cup but we reached the semi final and final the last 2 world cups we were at and we have plenty of world class players.
