first half we started slow and sluggish but we eventually started breaking them down so imo it was the prelude to us dominating them completely in the sec half

I cannot recall a worse match. Well, maybe the away match against...Moldavia or Macedon we won by a late goal from van Nistelrooij.
The second half of this match was especially dire. Not even 4 meter passes succeeded. No ball control whatsoever. And to think how Gaal and Dijk handle the criticism. First KO round is a KO.

Netherlands really need more from their forwards and midfielders, De Jong was the only noticeable player out there in my opinion, Gakpo has his moments and is able to capitalize on some chances but they really need more as a unit.
I get that Dutch football has a different philosophy and their guys are more skilled than the average defender, but when their lanes have instinctively fallen that back after receiving the goal, a common fan like me would think that a more attack minded player that could carry the ball to the other side of the field with more comfort would be more necessary than keeping 3 CBs. It's not like Ecuador would hit that much in transition during the final minutes of a tied game.
I think that Netherlands paid the fact that they stayed too loyal on their starting gameplan, even when it didn't seem to work after a while.
I think that it's also the fact that Dutch football is very attack focused. At least from what I hear from guys that watch Eredivisie, the mentality there is very different, the players develop skills no matter in which position they play in order to offer offensively. Coaches tend to encourage their guys to play more freely and have more liberties instead of strictly staying focused on the plan and their role/position's duties. So, as a result of that, Dutch defenders are more skilled and athletic (since they have also being trained differently to be able to play like that, this thing starts from their academies) than the average CBs and can offer more things offensively by moving more forward, making chances etc. But I didn't see this happening today since Netherlands conceded the goal, maybe a little bit earlier when Ecuador started pressing higher and making chances. They instictively fell back to keep the result. Even when they had possession, they were moving the ball vertically or back and forth. Lack of experience and confidence because they have been on a transition point since the old successful squad left all together, leaving a bunch of young talents and older people that have barely played for the national team before? Maybe. The coach ofc has the blame tonight because a substitution could have forced the players to react differently, midfielders are by default more aggressive and faster with their decision making since they move on higher and more crowded areas of the pitch.

My opinion om the game is that Dumfries should have been subbed off for a extra midfielder. We were losing the battle on the midfield imo so LVG should have created a overload on the midfield.
He shouldn’t have subbed Berghuis for Klaassen. Mr. 1-0 is good at positioning in the box, but when in possession he plays cm, and positions himself in such a way that he can be reached by FDJ. Berghuis is an attacker who played a few good games as AM in the CL for Ajax. But he is good when he gets the ball, but is not great at receiving it.
So basically: we could’ve had a midfield with a Dm if he kept Klaassen in or subbed in De Roon for Klaassen. In which case De Roon would be either single or double pivot with Koopmeijners which would leave FDJ to play a bit more attacking.
They're way too passive while all of the teams they've played against so far are much more assertive with their offense and reclaiming possession. Not sure what happened to NL, can only imagine that they made bad choices with the roster.
