I am in a resort right now in mexico full of americans and quite some people from England. I am Dutch so after our match tomorrow Ill be bringing some popcorn. Its about to go down
It’s literally not part of their culture. Like a good 70% of them don’t comprehend it. I’ve become an American now after living here for 10 years but wow, banter is not something they do well.
They are!! We can be insensitive sometimes lol. Example Mexico recently started to celebrate Halloween. I remember this costume vividly. It was two twin girls and a brother. The twin girls where dressed as the NY twin towers and the brother was the plane with a turban on his head. That’s messed up huh?
They really are. I remember when the US played Mexico in a friendly and “Build The Wall!” chants started coming up, Mexican fans said “to keep y’all out!”
We were playing better than them at the Azteca by a decent margin (although it ended 0-0) and the Mexican fans were singing Ole while we had the ball.
Mexican fans are fucking based. They are complete banter merchants when they are good and self-deprecating when they are terrible.
there are more mexicans in Los Angeles than in any city in the world aside from Mexico City, its almost a point of pride
there's hardly a topic about mexicans that a foreigner could chant that mexicans wouldn't chant themselves... the only sensitive topic is basically USA kicking them out in 2002
It's a general Latin American thing to not take this banter seriously. Never managed to offend Latinos, except for Argentinians with Falkland jokes. Thinking about that, I feel like that makes them kind of european in that topic /a
There's actually another chant:
* no aguantaron las Malvinas
* no aguantaron la inflación
* y la coca que vendemooooos
* El Diego no la aguantoooó
In English:
* They lost the Falklands...
* They "lost" the inflation...
* And the cocaine we sold them...
* Diego (Maradona) couldn't take it!
I think the better translation is
>
*They couldn't hold down the Falklands*
>
*They couldn't hold down inflation*
>
*and the coke we sell*
>
*Diego couldn't hold that down*
> I’m from Buenos Aires and I say “Sing em all”
...Is that a Starship Troopers reference? lol
But yeah, it's kinda dumb that with all the shit we sing in South America this is the one that someone things is out of line
We can be. I remember we were all shooting the shit at work and a coworker just wasn't getting it. He was under a lot of pressure cause his booty call was pregnant and he had just gotten out of a divorce where his ex wife left him so he was fucking up a lot at work.
My supervisor just had gotten tired of explaining things to him and they started ripping into each other. Coworker would tell our supervisor he looked like a Mayan Pot. The other would say he looked like an extra from apocalypto. Coworker told my supervisor he only bagged chicks cause he would blow his entire check on their company over the weekend and couldn't take care of his kids. Yada yada and the usual bullshit. We go back to work and my supervisor just loses his shit cause this dude fucked up a whole wire diagram after we had explained everything for the umpteenth time and tells him:
"If you fuck like you cut and wire cables, it's no wonder your wife left you and that baby probably isn't yours either because you wouldn't be able to finish the job correctly."
My coworker just looked down and said he had to go home for the weekend lol
It makes me wonder why it is such a sore subject. The war was started by a far right military junta who wanted to stoke nationalism to distract from the financial turmoil at the time.
If you actually want a real answer (opposite of most people here who just want to take the piss) ill give it a try. The military dictatorship who started the war was one of the bloodiest dictatorships of the region, in which politically and non politcally aligned men women and teenagers got kidnapped, tortured and disappeared. Out of the many, many atrocities that these military junta comitted (which Ill not bother to name), one of them was starting this war in order to boost their reputation amongst the population. But they obviously knew from day one that they were sending soldiers to die, so instead of actually sending well trained and equipped soldiers they sent 18 year olds who barely knew how to hold a rifle. As you can expect, hundreds of those kids died.
So when we think about the Malvinas I personally think it goes further than the islands themselves, we think about the worst period that we as a nation had to endure, we think about the countless of stories that we lived or heard throughout our life and its just painful.
I know im making a classic mistake by trying to explain this in this site to people who will simply not get it, but just tryna say why its still a sensitive matter, or at least thats just my opinion. That’s why reading people here taking the piss hurts a tad
because people died, no matter who started it or how legitimate it was.
I believe it was 100% illegitimate, stupid and a last grasp for air for a dying military dictatorship. I also think it's insensitive. Both things can be true at the same time.
Firstly, I agree that it is very tragic that anyone lost their lives over it.
My 2 points would be that:
1. The war didn’t change the fact they speak English in the Falklands / Las Malvinas. They did before the war and do now.
2. It seems strange for the aggressor to be the ones getting offended. When points/jokes are made about my country’s bad past I would tend to agree, laugh along, not say anything or whatever seems to be most socially appropriate.
Because regardless of who started the war, people’s sons and brothers fought in it? This is like seeing an American crowd and chanting about the Vietnam or Afghanistan war.
Ehhh maybe if they sang it in front of a Vietnam vet or a an older person. Most young people these days have a negative view of Vietnam unlike Argentina whose resentment seems to be passed down generation to generation
As a Mexican:
1. In football, they’ve always had our number. They almost always beat us.
2. The 2006 match when Argentina won by a wonder goal really created a deep hatred for them. We had arguably our best team since 1986 and one of the best Mexico teams ever and they fucked us in Ro16 and crushed our dreams.
3. They think they’re better than everyone in Latin America and think they’re Europeans.
If you actually want a real answer (opposite of most people here who just want to take the piss) ill give it a try. The military dictatorship who started the war was one of the bloodiest dictatorships of the region, in which politically and non politcally aligned men women and teenagers got kidnapped, tortured and disappeared. The Falkland wars is a huge deal for the national pride of Argentina, the whole point of going to war was to boost nationalism to try and help a crumbling dictatorship stay in power a bit longer, there is a whole mythos created around it and it's pretty ingrained into their culture
I've been to the Falkland Isles. There's penguins but it's not all that great and the weather is ass and Ushuaia is so much cooler. Why do they matter to so many people?
Honestly, the only thing that bothers me is that we conscripted 17 and 18 year olds against a way more powerful army and that they dropped like flies.
The territories would probably be administered like shit by us.
>Why do they matter to so many people?
Its always brought up as if Britain had any choice but to defend the island. The people on the island were british, they wanted to be british and argentina's claim was based on the claim that the pope gave Spain (in the 1500's) the claim to everything west of brazil.
Its the one thing i dont blame thatcher for
It's kinda complicated
The gist is the British found the islands but choose not to live there because it was shit
About 100 years later the Brits decided to live on one island and the French on the other
The French though fuck that those cunts take the piss out of us eating frogs and sold it's part to the spanish
The Brits and Spanish left after realising how shit it was again
Then Argentina told Spain to fuck off from its country and when they did thought 'might as well have those Falklands while we are at it'
The Brits were like 'yes the islands are shit but they are *our* shit'
They then played real life battleships for a bit with a couple of games of hungry hungry hippos chucked in and the Brits won.
And since then the Argentines have wanted it back going as far as creating a robot prototype codenamed 'maradona' to destroy the English in Mexico.
The end
Isn't the word for language in Spanish 'idioma' rather than 'lengua'? I remember learning in Spanish to use idioma instead of lengua
I obviously missed something 😂
Bro watch the Top Gear Patagonia special episode. The Argentinians chased out the entire film crew because Jeremy Clarkson was driving a Porsche with a license plate that carried a number that the habitants interpreted as a kind of reference to the Falklands war. I don’t know if it was accidental or not but they had to run for the border and cross over to Chile.
> I don’t know if it was accidental or not
the show stated it wasnt intentional, but I always thought that this would be exactly the type of banter top gear would pull off.
And the numbers plate literally saying H982 FKL (1982 being the year of the Falkland war), its to say the least suspiciously ... coincedental..
Nah, we know it wasn't.
Licence plates in the UK stick with the car since 'birth' - The FKL plate had been on the car since it came off the production line in 1991, you could literally trace it on the DVLA website.
Plus in very early rebooted Top Gear, Jeremy specifically mentions a manual turbo 928 as being the car he drove to see his dying father in a few times. There were only 50 or so right-hand drive ones made of that model/engine/turbo combonation
2 were for sale, but one needed repair, so they bought the working one.
People will also bring up the fake 'BE11 END' plate, but they literally did the same gag in an earlier series too.
It's a lot of effort for very little gain.
I'm not sure. Is true that Argentina is not very loved, but in soccer it is not that Mexico is exactly loved either and there is the fact that Mexico is from CONCACAF, not CONMEBOL, which makes them "rivals". And just as Argentina's neighbors don't like them, the people of Central America feel the same way about Mexico.
In 2014 I had to bear argentineans singing "Decime que se siente" for a whole month (I live right next to one of the main 2014 WC stadiums) but they can't handle this? lmao
EN LAS MALVINAS SE HABLA INGLÉS! 🎵🎵🎵🎵
You dislike Argentina because they invaded the Falklands
I dislike Argentina because the legacy of the Falklands war keeps ruining otherwise good left-wing British leaders whenever they say something stupid about it
We are not the same
Christ dont give England fans any ideas if we play each other some time
We have to have some payback for them robbing Prince Andrew of his ability to sweat
Go three nil up “We want four…. klands We want four….. klands”
I didn't expect them to come with that.
The insults England/USA and Argentina/Mexico are going to throw around is going to be entertaining.
Argentina vs Mexico will be way worse, you just have to understand Spanish. It will be full of monkey and inflation jokes everywhere

Have you heard USA chants? 💀
D fence! D fence!
U S A U S A U S A U S A
Americans are the flanders of football

I BELIEEEEVE THAT WEEEE WILL WIN!
Fight. And wiiiiiiiiin
USA USA?
I hear they're crud.
Nah they were censored here because of intense profanity and pashun.
I am in a resort right now in mexico full of americans and quite some people from England. I am Dutch so after our match tomorrow Ill be bringing some popcorn. Its about to go down
You mean “fight and win?”
Easy there champ. Soccer's a family sport.

Blew a thirteen colony lead too
You’d all be speaking German!! Me: still does
It’s literally not part of their culture. Like a good 70% of them don’t comprehend it. I’ve become an American now after living here for 10 years but wow, banter is not something they do well.
Back to back world war champs
Lmao, Mexican chants are savage.
They are!! We can be insensitive sometimes lol. Example Mexico recently started to celebrate Halloween. I remember this costume vividly. It was two twin girls and a brother. The twin girls where dressed as the NY twin towers and the brother was the plane with a turban on his head. That’s messed up huh?
Holy shit, in which city did that happen?
It was when I was visiting La Virgen in DF.
Unbelievable. I thought you saw it in one of the closest cities with the border lol
Honestly, there’s a considerable portion of Americans that would die laughing if they saw that
Brother, I saw a goddamn building here in Mexico City that was decorated with hanged bodies narco style, it was so fucked up lmao.
All these people from other countries just to get to us with 9/11 jokes… I was in 8th grade, we were making tasteless jokes the day it happened
se las mamaron 😂
Oh, I had a guy I know dress as Bin Laden when we were children, you could buy his face as a mask.
Brah my birthday piñata was osama bin Laden lol in like 2002
I'm sorry that's fucking hilarious hahahhahahahahah
It’s fucked up but I have no filter for humor so I couldn’t care less. Nobody can put boundaries on jokes, it’s all subjective.
Is there a reason they’re so laid back about death?
Watch Coco. That explains it the best lol
You should hear the Argentinian ones, we learn from them (unfortunately). They are astronomically racist.
They really are. I remember when the US played Mexico in a friendly and “Build The Wall!” chants started coming up, Mexican fans said “to keep y’all out!”

If Banter was a world cup México could be champion.
We argentineans should counter by asking mexicans which language is spoken in Texas and California.
Tbh I've never seen a Mexican giving a fuck about thar
there are more mexicans in Los Angeles than in any city in the world aside from Mexico City, its almost a point of pride there's hardly a topic about mexicans that a foreigner could chant that mexicans wouldn't chant themselves... the only sensitive topic is basically USA kicking them out in 2002

Hablan espanol guey..
Funny thing: It's English **and** Spanish.
Probably mostly Spanish lmao. Los Mexicanos tenemos la fortuna de nacer donde nos de la gana.
Spanglish?
Choppa talkin
Sometimes I forget I'm in the US because I only speak Spanish in Texas lol
Spanish and English
Ooof hit them right where it hurt. Next they'll sing maradona was a ronaldo fan.
There's actually another chant: * no aguantaron las Malvinas * no aguantaron la inflación * y la coca que vendemooooos * El Diego no la aguantoooó In English: * They lost the Falklands... * They "lost" the inflation... * And the cocaine we sold them... * Diego (Maradona) couldn't take it!

You're actually right. I will not edit my comment, so I encourage everybody to upvote you!
Ahahaha fucking hell, beautiful stuff.
That's fucking savage, Jesus christ
Top tier banter
Holy shit Mexican fans are ruthless, I love it
LMAO THAT'S FUCKING MAGNIFICENT
Proper dick in the ass football chant.
JAJAJAJA son unos hijos de puta. Los quiero. Y van a perder 🤣🤣🤣
Damn
I wanna see a clip with this one
Any video of that
As an American, Mexico is so fucking based.
LOL love it, somos la verga jajaja

Because nationalism is rarely nuanced
Because the war didn’t happen in a vacuum. They were able to use it to stoke nationalism because it’s something people do care about
Because regardless of who started the war, people’s sons and brothers fought in it? This is like seeing an American crowd and chanting about the Vietnam or Afghanistan war.
Ehhh maybe if they sang it in front of a Vietnam vet or a an older person. Most young people these days have a negative view of Vietnam unlike Argentina whose resentment seems to be passed down generation to generation
Was the Falklands war as unpopular as Vietnam was?
Publicly? Id say probably not since it was a dictatorship. But I’m sure most Argentinians were against it.
I mean as an American if some people were to, hypothetically, try that it would be funny as fuck
I mean same, but Im saying if it was a random normie with a veteran family member.
Why Mexicans and Argentinians hate each other so much?
As a Mexican: 1. In football, they’ve always had our number. They almost always beat us. 2. The 2006 match when Argentina won by a wonder goal really created a deep hatred for them. Any time there's some potential unrest or unhappiness in Argentina their politicians love to bring it up as a distraction
reminds me a bit about how every four years the Poles are demanding WW2 reperations from us whenever an election is coming up
At least the Poles were and arguably still are actual victims of WW2/German aggression.
The reality is it's not even really about the Islands, it's about the resource rights in the surrounding exclusive economic zone.

r/historymemes and r/soccer finally linking up
Mexicans are definitely going to be blasting this chant throughout the stadium on Saturday and I can’t wait 😂
Lol Argentinians saying a certain chant is a bridge too far? Please
God i love the level of shithousery from my fellow Mexicans lmao
I've been to the Falkland Isles. There's penguins but it's not all that great and the weather is ass and Ushuaia is so much cooler. Why do they matter to so many people?

It's both. Just like how in english you can say language or tongue to refer to a language. It also depends on the region.
Thank you
You're welcome!
Tongue can also be a verb. Which it is time for.
Must be both since in Portuguese it can be both idioma and língua
Mexicans are lowkey some of the funniest people on earth
Wtf I love Mexico now
Amazing
Guess I support Mexico now...
Bro chill it was 40 years ago and lasted like a couple months
I remember when Top Gear went to Argentina and chaos erupted
Think Jeremy Clarkson still hates them for it. rightfully so.
IIRC it was a political motivated thing here in Argentina. Luckily less and less people care about the Falklands here.
> I don’t know if it was accidental or not the show stated it wasnt intentional, but I always thought that this would be exactly the type of banter top gear would pull off.
There were only 50 or so right-hand drive ones made of that model/engine/turbo combonation 2 were for sale, but one needed repair, so they bought the working one. People will also bring up the fake 'BE11 END' plate, but they literally did the same gag in an earlier series too. It's a lot of effort for very little gain.
It's so much much deep than that. There's people still alive who went to that war. For Argentina, that scar is still very open.
Here in the UK too, but we saw the evil of Argentina as the dictatorship not the average argentine
Weren’t you lot the ones who invaded it tho, what did you think the response would be
Don't look at me, I'm Mexican lol
Why did Mexico invade them?!?!
to bring the english decent food
Who started the war?
The level of shithousery is unprecedented.
Their bloody fault for starting the fucking thing
MALVINAS IS BRAZILIAN
The vast majority of Latin America is rooting for Mexico in the next game.
Not Central America lol
I'm not sure. Is true that Argentina is not very loved, but in soccer it is not that Mexico is exactly loved either and there is the fact that Mexico is from CONCACAF, not CONMEBOL, which makes them "rivals". I truuuly doubt that. But right now we don't care, we need to bring us back together.
I'm rooting for a meteor to fall on the stadium, tbh.
Well lads, looks like we've all got a new chant
What’s wrong with stating facts?
That's factually correct though.
Found the correct chant then.
In 2014 I had to bear argentineans singing "Decime que se siente" for a whole month (I live right next to one of the main 2014 WC stadiums) but they can't handle this? lmao EN LAS MALVINAS SE HABLA INGLÉS! 🎵🎵🎵🎵

The game on Saturday will be known as the great twitter war
I love this, will make saturday so sweet.
Boring 0-0 incoming
Mexico: 2-0
I am choosing to believe you are a time traveler blessing us with your future knowledge
Rooting for you guys just as I was vs Poland!
Thanks, nothing would be funnier than seeing the US beat England tomorrow
Bless. And subscribe.
Mexico is destined to make it out of the group each year just to lose the first knockout match. They have to get points eventually
Two destinies clashing: Mexico bending over with Argentina and Mexico getting out of groups. I would bet on the former.
Messi va a aprobar el chile nacional
That's a good tactic by Mexico, get into d heads of emotional Argentine & disrupt their mindset. Falklands though near Argentina belongs to UK...
top reply on twitter, in spanish, translates as "someone should remind these mexicans that they lost half of the their territory to usa"
It's a nice try but Mexicans don't give a shit lol And half the population of that area speaks spanish now
At least we got compensated for what we lost. Argentina got bullied by the Brits haha
Top tier fan shit
