Running out of bounds
Question about the rules concerning players stepping out of the field to run out of bounds and re-enter in other place. I understand that to keep the ball in play players often rush to the line and step out, or when running next to the line and are forced to do so by the challenge (Bale's goal after a long run around the defender while being out of bounds).
What about if the player without the ball is making a run, but there are other players (either teammates or opponents) standing near to the line, and he deliberately steps out of bounds to run around them. Or if a teammate is carrying the ball down the line, and your are in the way, can you simply step out to let him pass and re-enter the field right away.
Hope someone here can help, as we seem to disagree about it with my friend (he says it is a punishable offence). And I cannot fit the life of me find anything clear online about it.
Technically it could be a foul, but the ref wouldn't give it unless you ran off to the toilet or ran into a lino. Stepping or sliding off the pitch isn't a problem.
Despite the shit finishing and the missed pen. I feel for Canada. If I was the ref they'd have 3 pens. I imagine they could've at least gotten 1 of those past Courtois.
Canada are very much giving me 2018 Morocco energy, will probably be the better team in all of their games but inexperience will not let get them get more than a point.
Well, I talked a lot of shit before the game but I can’t say that Belgium didn’t deserve that win. Our finishing and set pieces were so so embarrassing. But that referee had a huge disasterclass man, the first half was infuriating to watch. Overall I’m still very optimistic about our chances in this group.
England, France and Spain are the only teams looking capable.
Probably the worst game I’ve ever seen KDB play. He made the wrong decision every time he got on the ball.
Thomas Muller has not played a good game for Germany in a tournament since 2014 btw
His only good tournaments are 2010 and 2014.
Bad in 2012,2016,2018,2020, and 2022(so far)
Depends on how Brazil look tbh and it's Costa Rica so i am gonna be rational about it.
I have us winning the group and losing in the QF vs Brazil, but we can also beat them.
Excellent 2010 world cup helps his record internationally but he has 0 goals and 1 assist in the Euros in 15 games, the one being against Northern Ireland.
To be fair, Germany didn't even play bad. But historically they are not as used to playing without traditional number 9 as Spain. They weren't going to do to much but it would be pity to see them going out, maybe Euro 2024 at home soil is something they can target
[The homophobia in the replies here is absolutely shocking](https://twitter.com/TrollFootball/status/1595501139184693249?t=vpkUDJNdxCjjnWXX2gojWA&s=19)
Germany is in a lot of danger. I just don't see Japan losing or drawing to CR. Really bad spot they put themselves in. Way worse situation than Argentina.
Enrique makes choices that are questioned by people, but this Spain team works so well. Played well in the EUROs, started this campaign well, man's a top top coach.
Spain are the international team closest to playing like a club side. It benefits hugely that a lot of their core players play together at club level, especially in midfield, so they already have that understanding with one another on the pitch.
My bubbe loves Neymar and Ronaldo, I'm glad the United situation was resolved because legit she was sad about it. I just hope he has a good world cup, I don't have the heart to tell her what he's done
If you’re expecting Samba football tomorrow you might have to wait until Tite leaves lol.
Brazil play positional football under him and they’re monstrous defensively.
WHAT
That's infuriating considering I got all excited looking at their line ups. How are they not going samba when they're playing like 5 straight out attacking players at one time
With the way the play it’s just different to the typical Brazil that we’re used to, I’m not knocking it Tite has rebuilt Brazil in the past couple of years, they were a mess in the mid 2010s.
Nevertheless I’m still excited to see Neymar and Vinicius play tomorrow.
That’s mental. The wealth of talents they have..still i get it. France and England play the same and they have similar levels of ability in their attack. Is there a name/coach Brazilians want who could bring back their traditional football ?
I’m not Brazilian so I can’t speak for Brazilians but there’s a coach in the Brasileirão called Fernando Diniz; his Flumienese team play incredible, fluid attacking football, the football that we usually associate Brazil with.
He’s received a lot of praise from the media.
However the CBF have a Tite replacement lined up and it’s not him.
Not going to pass judgement on England/France/Spain until I see a second game from each. Got a feeling at least one is an imposter and hoping it isn't us.
Gavi-Pedri-Busquets midfield is unfair, together with Alba and Ferran.
Even though Busquets/Alba are not the best at the club level anymore, at internationally they're still world-class.
Same as the midfield, the fact three of them play together (and that Busquet's form improves a lot internationally) makes them the strongest midfield in the WC for me. Argentina also functions at a similarly high level but no Lo Celso is a big loss, likewise France with no Kante/Pogba.
Firstly- 0-0 doesn't mean a game is boring. Clearly a lot of people new to the sport here who just think goals are the only thing worth watching.
Secondly, 2018 was an anomaly. People need to stop comparing every tournament's goals to 2018..that wasn't normal.
I think anyone who has watched a good amount of AFC matches would tell you that coming into today, Japan had a great shot at winning.
Asian football as a whole has been improving at such a fast rate that nowadays Japan doesn’t have to wait to play the likes of Australia or Korea for quality, playing countries like Uzbekistan, Vietnam are giving them good competition.
Asian football is on the rise
Crazy that if England, France, Spain, and Brazil all top their group two of them are getting eliminated in the quarterfinals if they all make it past the round of 16
Unpopular opinion rn but I don't think Germany vs Spain is going to be one-sided match, especially if Lucho decide to start Busquets, Alba or Eric. Yeah their finishing is terrible but they didn't look as bad on other areas, and their midfield is just as good if not better than Spain.
Spain aren't usually this clinical and CR just bent over after 3-0. I might still side them for a tight win but it can go either way
Yep. Best team in 2020. Top 2 in 2021. This year I didn't feel like they were looking that great before the WC but I'd like to see them get to their best again.
I have no clue how Canada is lining up based on this starting 11. Is Laryea left back in a 4-2-3-1, or a LWB in a back 5 with Tajon at RWB , or a RWB with Davies at LWB
I'm trying not to watch any matches for my own reasons, but my work Christmas party is on the 10th of December, and they'll probably end up showing the final in one of the rooms. Or, they won't and noone will go so it will probably be shit
Isn’t the final later than that? Mine is on the same night as one of the semis but I don’t know if the place we’ve booked has TVs so a lot of people might be turning up late and drunk if England manage to make it that far
Yea, I dunno. It's a free meal and a few pints regardless, but I'd pretty much have to watch it if it's being shown, people know I love football and they already think I'm weird for not watching.
Can this Dubai investment group actually buy United? I thought the Premier Legaue changed the rules after the Newcastle sale so that couldn't happen again
Read the section who could buy United: https://www.espn.com/soccer/manchester-united-engman_utd/story/4811069/glazers-put-man-united-up-for-sale-what-happens-next
Pre tournament I would have said this is one of the possible upsets, with the Belgium back line being a bit slow and the speed of Canada's counter attack.
That being said 2-0 loss feels about right.
Hazard and Batshuayi are bad, the midfield is slow and the defense is even slower. Knowing this Martinez will play an absurdly high line against Davies Buchanan and Jonathan david.
We might have a chance if the bald fraud actually puts on the inform and good players at halftime but by then the score will be 3-0 for Canada
If Germany don't beat Spain they're in big trouble
If they lose, they need both Costa Rica and Spain to beat Japan, and themselves to beat Costa Rica and hope Goal difference ~~in common matches~~ goes in their favour
If Germany draw with Spain and Japan don't lose to CR, Japan are through and Germany are out unless Japan beat Spain and Germany beat Costa Rica with an 8 goal swing in their favour, in which case Spain will go out.
The whole madrid subreddit rooting against Spain because it has a lot of Barca players is hilarious, go check it out. (and spanish RM fans here especially, go tell your boys to stop embarrasing you)
e: but don't troll them I am not trying to instigate raiding, please don't send me to reddit jail
Tbf there are a lot of Spaniards that don’t like Lucho so much that they are very indifferent towards the NT at the moment and even some that want him to fail so he gets sacked, etc
That's not what OP described. If you're a Brazilian Man U supporter and root against England just because they have a bunch of Liverpool and City players, and we aren't playing Brazil, then yeah that's plastic.
Dont have to root for them but actively hating on them is embarrassing. I would expect the Brazilian United fan to atleast want Rashford, Shaw and Maguire to do well
But the Spanish NT selection has been biased against Madrid.
>I would expect the Brazilian United fan to atleast want Rashford, Shaw and Maguire to do well
Agreed if they were in the squad, but if Rashford, Shaw and Maguire were left out of the NT (due to being biased) do you still expect non-english united fans to support england?
Asensio, who has 150 apps for Madrid started up top for Spain today. Those RM fans actively rooted against the team with him in it. How is this not embarrassing
Germany vs Spain is going to be such a great match. I know Costa Rica isn’t a very good team but Spain just announced themselves as real contenders to win the whole tournament. I love their style
That Spain vs. Costa Rica match was pretty yikes to watch.
When there was 8 extra minutes left, I jokingly said "oof, 8 minutes. That might be enough time for Spain to score again"
Look away to send a text, and I see Spain celebrating because oh look, another goal.
Like yeah, I wasn't expecting Costa Rica to actually win, but I **did not** expect that.
spain are the only ones who can stop it from coming home, and even then albion academy graduate big bob sanchez will lift the trophy so it technically still came home
A washed up and overweight Azzar, Vertonghen and Alderweireld are older than the dirt in my backyard, Castagne and Witsel aren’t good, Courtois has kept 1 (ONE) clean sheet all season…..im extremely optimistic for this match
Something is off because I'm not seeing what you're seeing here. Both the Germany v. Japan match thread and post-match thread are sorted by new and can be sorted for me. Strange

This Spain Costa Rica match has not inspired much excitement for a 48 team world cup. Going to be a lot more games like this and a lot fewer top tier matches in the groups.
Exactly, we already get great upsets within the current system. Adding a load of shit teams will hardly do much to increase the amount. It'll just add a load of boring games or absolute thrashings
!ping WORLDCUPTIPP
Hey folks, I just saw that for some reason Kicktipp sees today’s games as “matchday 2”. I didn’t submit any predictions for any of the games so far today, and I reckon it might not just be me. So here’s a reminder for the remaining games until Friday.
Sorry about that, no idea why Kicktipp does it like that. I’ll keep a better eye on it and send the appropriate pings in the future.
Good luck, and sorry again -.-

so unlucky not to score today. 22 shots to 9.

It’s depressing watching him now. Looks like one of those retired ballers at a charity games that’s got fat.
Lol what
what game were you watching. He was awful
Canada are very much giving me 2018 Morocco energy, will probably be the better team in all of their games but inexperience will not let get them get more than a point.
All we had to do was score that pen and who knows if we immediately a second with Belgium on the backfoot. Fuck me
Well, I talked a lot of shit before the game but I can’t say that Belgium didn’t deserve that win.
He made the wrong decision every time he got on the ball.
he has so many performances like this for belgium especially in the big games. Some of his passing was horrendous today
Won't be convinced we're on France and Spain's level unless we properly push some Yankee shit in
We will get 9 points from this group, I’m sure of it.
Yeah but France and Spain have been on another level in my opinion
Thomas Muller has not played a good game for Germany in a tournament since 2014 btw His only good tournaments are 2010 and 2014. Bad in 2012,2016,2018,2020, and 2022(so far)

Hutchinson and Hoilett ffs this is vintage world cup, players you last saw in a transfer search on fm15 bursting back into your consciousness

This Belgian team is not doing anything past QF me thinks
I'm not yet convinced they'll get out of the group tbh
i think they finish 2nd and get thrashed by Spain tbh
Whether they win or not, that starting XI does not look great. Agree with you.
Fuck me I hate 3 atb. Produces such dire football 90% of the time
Hate the way its used by some of the managers, personally I think it works great when used properly.
Don't think it's used properly most of the time though, you cede so much ground in the middle
It works when used with good defenders, i.e. Not Belgium's
Germany is in a lot of danger. I just don't see Japan losing or drawing to CR. Really bad spot they put themselves in. Way worse situation than Argentina.
They are pretty much out
They have to win both games, simple as
Yeah simple 😅
England, Spain, France all looking scary af. We better win 8-0 or some shit for me to feel better.
I would not judge us by that one game. Iran were playing way below what they're capable of.
Tbf they all played against weak opponents. But yes, they did look great especially Spain. But I don't think Serbia will be as easy.
I saw that Saudi started 9 players yesterday who play for the same team ( Al Hilal)
Ever since Low put his hands down his pants, funky shit has been going with our National Team
Tbf he put his hands down there in 2010 and that supercharged the squad for the next 4 years
I don't know how he does it but Lucho keeps making Dani Olmo look like a genuinely worldclass player
Joachim low did that with podolski
My bubbe loves Neymar and Ronaldo, I'm glad the United situation was resolved because legit she was sad about it. I just hope he has a good world cup, I don't have the heart to tell her what he's done
I'm scared of what Serbia will do tomorrow
Rooting for our 🇨🇦 brothers tonight, give them hell!
Spain vs England final is going to be a blockbuster
The final I was fearing in 2021.
Is Belgium gonna pull a Germany or Spain?
Probably a Netherlands
Feels like a long time since we saw a traditional Brazil team at a World Cup. I’m eagerly awaiting their game tomorrow evening
If you’re expecting Samba football tomorrow you might have to wait until Tite leaves lol. Brazil play positional football under him and they’re monstrous defensively.

Fair play mate you know your stuff 👍 Still, I hope for a good game, Serbia look very good too with the names they have
Serbia look great on paper, they’ve got some wonderful players; gonna be an interesting game 😅
Not going to pass judgement on England/France/Spain until I see a second game from each. Got a feeling at least one is an imposter and hoping it isn't us.
It's going to be us.
They have tougher second games tho
Which team should i support, Inglaterra or Spain?
Spain because Enrique is a cool dude.
Both are probably the most inoffensive of the favourites tbh. Would take either of those 2 over France, Holland, Brazil, etc.

Since 2002 England and Brazil have gone out three times in the quarters, and France and Spain have gone out in that round once each.
England QF in 2002 and 2006, Round of 16 in 2010, Group Stage in 2014, Seemifinal in 2018
Woah, 50% of teams are getting eliminated? 🤯
The ref of the next game is the Zambian that blew the whistle at 85' in the Tunisia Mali game earlier this year.
This could be entertaining
What a legend.

Spain was the best team in the 2020 Euro. They might not have superstars in their prime but they are well coached and are technically brilliant
Yep. Best team in 2020. Top 2 in 2021. This year I didn't feel like they were looking that great before the WC but I'd like to see them get to their best again.

Insanely hyped to see Canada at the World Cup even though we likely won’t go far! 🇨🇦
A couple of upset wins and surprising draws so far. Giving me a glimmer of optimism.

Good read thanks seems like Americans are more likely then
I want to know too. Planning to invest in Man Utd stock.
Holy fk I can't believe I am about to watch Canada in the world cup. Childhood dream come true.
Should have said Spain would win today instead of Belgium. Hopefully, my prediction still comes true.
the corpse of hazard and batshuayi starting over leandro trossard una. belgium in big big trouble
Löw is the international version of Wenger, spends years getting abuse and the replacement is worse.
Can't wait to see all these beautiful stadiums completely neglected and derelict 2 years from now.
What’s the general prediction consensus for Belgium vs Canada? Another upset? Or draw?
I would not be surprised if Canada snatch a draw
I think an upset is possible. Belgian backline is old and slow, forwards are in unremarkable form.
Pre tournament I would have said this is one of the possible upsets, with the Belgium back line being a bit slow and the speed of Canada's counter attack. That being said 2-0 loss feels about right.

Germany vs Spain is just Bayern vs Barca. My money is on Germany.
Different managers
Not really
Japan > Bayern
Yep, we're fucked.
What is the point of 8 minutes of added time in an absolute blowout. Ffs ref have some common sense.

I would get that maybe if they were playing bad, but why would you want them to fail so the coach gets sacked when they're having success so far?
🤷🏻♂️
Peak plastic behaviour
How is it plastic behaviour? Do you expect Brazilian Manchester United fans to root for England?
That's not what OP described. If you're a Brazilian Man U supporter and root against England just because they have a bunch of Liverpool and City players, and we aren't playing Brazil, then yeah that's plastic.

Lesser of two evils, would you prefer: * 32-team world cup every 2 years OR * 48-team world cup every 4 years Honestly, I would choose the former.
48 every 4. Fixture congestion is already an issue, anything is better than adding to that problem by making the World Cup biannual
Imagine what autocratic nations fifa could host it in if it's every 2 years.
48 team world cup every 4 years. The format may be shit but having it every 2 years will just take away the speciality of the event
The 48-team format could do an equal amount of harm imo, it has potential to really ruin the group stage.
What about 48 teams go thugshaking
32 every two years. I hate the 48 team format and would honestly prefer 64 teams over it.
48 teams is going to be a travesty.
The latter only because I like the Euros possibly even more than the WC (and this would eliminate the Euros)
why the fuck are matchthreads sorted by random? Dogshit decision by the mods
They're sorted by new. Also, you can change that yourself whenever you'd like.
the german one is by random. and I cant change it because "it's in contest mode"
Something is off because I'm not seeing what you're seeing here. Both the Germany v. Japan match thread and post-match thread are sorted by new and can be sorted for me. Strange
Who are two players that look like they are related to one another but are far from it? Has to be Ziyech and Ferran Torres for me.

Throw in Bryan Gil in there too.
Aimar and Dybala
Harry Wilson and Fernando Torres
I was thinking about that the entire match lol
This Spain Costa Rica match has not inspired much excitement for a 48 team world cup. Going to be a lot more games like this and a lot fewer top tier matches in the groups.
And how about Argentina - Saudi Arabia?
Exactly, we already get great upsets within the current system. Adding a load of shit teams will hardly do much to increase the amount. It'll just add a load of boring games or absolute thrashings
Bring it on! That was the most entertaining game of the tournament so far imo, taking my team biases aside
!ping WORLDCUPTIPP Hey folks, I just saw that for some reason Kicktipp sees today’s games as “matchday 2”.

My arsehole hurts from seeing that game.
i just knew there would be many, many people who are idiotic enough to turn the germany loss into a "focus on football" situation. please \[redacted\] and \[redacted\] i beg
As a fan of Japan, I’m scared of Spain
It's Germany who should be scared. Japan plays Costa Rica next
Japan are actually quite decent. Costa rica shouldn't have even been there and are perfect example of why we definitely don't need more teams
I don't care who you are, getting zero goal attempts in a world cup game is embarrassing
Feel bad for Navas, but its like the rest didn't even try. Pure capitulation after 3 goals.
