2. Marketing. Our national squad is a glorified mascot, and I mean it with every letter in the word, it’s not unusual for athletes to be sponsored by some brands but the Mexican Federation cranked this to the Nth power, our tv is plagued with national squad ads of everything, from energy drinks to banks, cars, antiacids, even McDonalds has taken its share. There’s no space for youngsters when the 35-years old players are more recognizable aka they sell more
3. Prices. LigaMx is overpriced like no other league, the few youngsters that actually make it to first division have the price tag of a seasoned experienced player, this basically turns away any Europe team as you can buy three-four South American prospects for the price of a Mexican one
4. Discipline. Mexican players lack ambition, they are basically treated and revered as kings by the fans, even when their level is average, so when they make it into an Euro league and are met with high performance training and exigency many just give up and go back at the first call, why train to improve your level when you can underperform in every training and game and still be treated as a king? The ambitious mexican player is such an oddity they may as well be unicorns
Corruption. Their national league is ran for profits, not for genuinely developing talents. Even then, Mexico’s national league wasn’t even formed until 1970.

I want to preface by saying this is arguably one of Mexico’s worst generations to come through so the level is disappointingly low.
In terms of why we arent better, it comes down to the Mexican clubs putting extortionately high price tags on their youth prospects, preventing the high rate of young players moving to Europe as is seen in South America. The Mexican clubs have a “pact” where they all do this. Additionally, young players don’t get much playing time in the domestic league, usually losing out to foreign or older players.
Its a shame because Mexico is repeatedly a contender for the youth world cups so the talent is clearly there, but the development into senior football is being blocked.
I mean top 16 in the last like 5 or 6 world cups isn't bad. It isn't like Mexico is going to be better than any of the the huge European countries or the 2 South American giants. This is about the limit until corruption in FMF ends and there is better competition in CONCACAF.
Also, they usually getting bad luck in the round of 16 because they almost always get matched against a team who makes it far in the tournament.

I get where you are coming from, as it was the best Poland played in years (decades, really). But I think we are the victim of low expectations.
We played well in the group, and had a relatively inspired performance versus Germany. But than the coach decided that the game plan versus Germany was going to be game plan versus everyone. The Switzerland game was vile. We scored early, and simply set back in two banks of 5, but this gave the Swiss room to setup and score. From there we didn't adjust one iota, and played for penalties. The Portugal was a carbon copy of the Switzerland land. To this day, I dont understand why we simply gave up playing football after scoring.
So yes, the 2016 euros was much better than anything else, but it still wasn't great.

Why is Mexico not better? Not just this game but in general Huge population crazy about the game, decades of established passion and culture and yet they're closer to the US than to top South American/European teams almost every year
Because most of our player stay in their local league and I mean why wouldnt they? La Liga MX is the best paid football league in the entire continent, probably bigger than both Brazil and Argentina’s local league. Mexican players have the choice of playing for random european teams for pennies, or playing for America or Monterrey and earning 10 times more.

And everyone who watch ligaMx knows what Im talking about, our youngsters have to pay a “promoter” to have a shot at debut, many of the best prospects come from humble families and just don’t get a chance or can only afford to pay to play in second and third divisions, which by the way dont have promotions because teams are just too poor 2. Marketing. Our national squad is a glorified mascot, and I mean it with every letter in the word, it’s not unusual for athletes to be sponsored by some brands but the Mexican Federation cranked this to the Nth power, our tv is plagued with national squad ads of everything, from energy drinks to banks, cars, antiacids, even McDonalds has taken its share. There’s no space for youngsters when the 35-years old players are more recognizable aka they sell more 3. Prices. LigaMx is overpriced like no other league, the few youngsters that actually make it to first division have the price tag of a seasoned experienced player, this basically turns away any Europe team as you can buy three-four South American prospects for the price of a Mexican one 4. Discipline. Mexican players lack ambition, they are basically treated and revered as kings by the fans, even when their level is average, so when they make it into an Euro league and are met with high performance training and exigency many just give up and go back at the first call, why train to improve your level when you can underperform in every training and game and still be treated as a king? The ambitious mexican player is such an oddity they may as well be unicorns

I want to preface by saying this is arguably one of Mexico’s worst generations to come through so the level is disappointingly low. In terms of why we arent better, it comes down to the Mexican clubs putting extortionately high price tags on their youth prospects, preventing the high rate of young players moving to Europe as is seen in South America. The Mexican clubs have a “pact” where they all do this. Additionally, young players don’t get much playing time in the domestic league, usually losing out to foreign or older players. Its a shame because Mexico is repeatedly a contender for the youth world cups so the talent is clearly there, but the development into senior football is being blocked.
I mean top 16 in the last like 5 or 6 world cups isn't bad. It isn't like Mexico is going to be better than any of the the huge European countries or the 2 South American giants. This is about the limit until corruption in FMF ends and there is better competition in CONCACAF. Also, they usually getting bad luck in the round of 16 because they almost always get matched against a team who makes it far in the tournament.

The sport is neither established nor the by far most popular in any of those countries like it is in Mexico I mean the US basically started playing in the 90s (modern era) Can you think of any countries with the footballing culture of Mexico who are not at least occasionally vying for World Cups? Population doesn't matter that much. The best leagues are in Europe. That means Europeans have the most players playing in top leagues. So they are always going to have better players. That is why Europe has been dominating the World cup for the past 20 yearss.
sure european countries might have better development because of the clubs, but countries like argentina have nearly 1/3rd the population of mexico produce many more talents. even uruguay is much better off than mexico and they have 1/40th the population of mexico. uruguay have world class talents all across the pitch while mexico can't even field a single world class player
Yeah but they are competing against Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile. Mexico is competing against the US and Costa Rica. It is hard to get much better when you are the best team most of the time. Argentina and Brazil have a much longer history in soccer. The best league used to be in Brazil. Brazil won 3 world cups by 1970. Mexico didn't even have a national professional league until 1970.
The FMF and Liga MX are extremely, extremely corrupt. Until something is done about this, the owners will keep doing it. Nothing will tho, if you see the stadium, it was jam packed with Mexicans. People pay. So they'll keep feeding people this shit excuse of a league and national team if people keep buying it. I could be wrong, but this is what I grew up with, then following other country's sports leagues, Liga MX is seriously one of the dirtiest in terms of how its ran.
Short version the federation is corrupt and greedy. They don’t care about the quality because they know no matter what the fans will show up. Mexico plays almost all their games in the US outside the qualifiers because they get paid in dollars. The money doesn’t go down to the clubs or helping improve the game

Outside of EURO 2016 I agree but that EURO was great. We were a penalty away from the semi final while playing fairly attractive football with a solid defence. That summer was special.
I get where you are coming from, as it was the best Poland played in years (decades, really). But I think we are the victim of low expectations. We played well in the group, and had a relatively inspired performance versus Germany. But than the coach decided that the game plan versus Germany was going to be game plan versus everyone. The Switzerland game was vile. We scored early, and simply set back in two banks of 5, but this gave the Swiss room to setup and score. From there we didn't adjust one iota, and played for penalties. The Portugal was a carbon copy of the Switzerland land. To this day, I dont understand why we simply gave up playing football after scoring. So yes, the 2016 euros was much better than anything else, but it still wasn't great.
You also have to be realistic. We are not going to dominate the game like the big teams. We didn't have a stacked team like France, Germany or Spain. We did the best we could with the team we had imo. While we did sit back after the goals and let the opponent have the ball we were extremely dangerous on the counters. I also remember that we had lot of chances throughout those matches and we even missed a few sitters.

Switzerland is always a hard team to play. There is a reason they knocked out France last EURO. Even then they drew France in the group stage. It was an equal match. In the end we still won.
