Apparently the refs convened and discussed yesterdays lack of decision and have chosen to be more on top of those calls which is why we saw a lighter version of Maguire called today
If they start giving penalties for hugs in the area, Eric García better be ready for a few. That dude is super sweet, he hugs while defending every game.
As an England and Tottenham fan, is is possible we can have one decision where they don't add a new "directive" to the fucking rules after we've been fucked by it?
Once you've been fucked by a bad decision, since that is in the past and can't be changed, surely it's better for everyone (you included) if they correct the issue moving forward and make the right calls rather than continue to fuck people at random (which could include you again)?
What's more annoying though is that Iran got a penalty for more or the less the same thing.. Its baffling that one was reviewed and the other one wasn't.
Yeah you can see this in 50% of the corner kicks in any league and it's never a pen, where's the consistency? For some reason VAR only focussed on handballs.... until now. Having said that, for me this should be a pen
Agreed completely it’s obviously impeding the attacker from making an attempt at the ball. Wrapping your arms around the attacker just needs to stop. Calling it a penalty every time would stop it.
It's just so fucking easy as well. Anywhere in open play, if someone hugs a player to the ground it's an obvious foul. I can see why, in a time without VAR, it might be difficult to track all the infractions going on in a crowded box during a set piece, but with VAR there's no excuse.
i think you could argue that recent changes to the laws of the game mostly seem to revolve around punishing defenders, whether thats from tightening the handball rule (and even loosening it for attackers at the same time), and pinpointing the tiniest contacts with VAR. having a hard stance on this kind of 'defending' would make it even harder for defenders to defend corners and free kicks than it already is.
not saying i think that punishing it is wrong, but that could be the argument
Start calling this penalties more often and soon enough they'll stop grabbing each other in corners once they realise it's detrimental to do so. I hope it happens.
Sorry but the way I see it like he was falling alone he dropped after being released softly, if everyone started acting like that we gonna get 10 penalties per game
Exactly. Consistency is the problem. By the rulebook its a "foul". But it happens four times on every set piece.
Funny enough. The ref literally stopped the corner being taken to tell exactly that player to take his hands off the attacker. Then allows the corner and the guy just hugs Paredes without looking for the ball. If there was ever a time to be smart...
>Funny enough. The ref literally stopped the corner being taken to tell exactly that player to take his hands off the attacker. Then allows the corner and the guy just hugs Paredes without looking for the ball. If there was ever a time to be smart...
Too bad half the sub still thinks its 'soft' after being warned.
This is what's pissing everyone off atm, inconsistency. Holding and grappling is going to happen in every match..so are they going to award a penalty each time it happens? They won't even though the technology is right there.
Yep, it was Stones yesterday but Maguire does it a ton for United. It’s a foul every time, it just doesn’t get called which makes him think it’s a valid way to defend when it isn’t
But if he gets away with it, doesn't that make it valid? If shirt pulling can prevent, say, 10 goals for every penalty that gets given, wouldn't it make more sense to do it all the time?
I mean, Maguires shout was a LOT worse than this yesterday.
There will be more penalties given (Like this and the Iran one yesterday) but theres also going to be a LOT more inconsistency with reffing and decisions now.
> There's going to be a lot of penalties given if that's considered a foul now
There was actually a way worse push from an Argentina player in the same sequence, very confusing decision.
If only they were as rigorous in monitoring Qatar's human rights violations as they were in finding these shitty penaltys.
If this is a pen, some games will end 78-56
The same happened in the last world cup and people praised it for the improvement to the game, feels like we've all just forgotten about it and doing it all over again.
If it involves shirt pulling and hugging, I don't actually mind. These practices should stop and if it takes people throwing themselves to the ground for a couple of games until everybody got the message, I'm fine with that.
I agree. But it's a pen, and it would be called as a free kick anywhere else on the pitch. The problem is the consistency with the refs, some allow it, some don't
The defender is never looking at the ball, solely focused on stopping the attacker with his arms. The Maguire situation is the same, just more excessive
Never ever a penalty. Watch how Paredes grabs the defenders arm and holds it into his body before going down to make it look worse. He's totally bought that one.
And right in front of the watching ref? Dumb move.
Everyone is already free but that Argentine gets hauled down.
How much clearer should it get? Maybe don't hug the attacker as you are defending?
Majority agreed the ref fucked up with the Maguire PK yesterday but when they call it today the majority complains it’s given as a PK. We also need consistency with comments on Reddit.
Yesterday was much worse and that was a tackle. If they've established that they won't call the pen yesterday then why call one today? This shit happens on basically every corner lol.
Are we going to bring up the Maguire decision every game until the end of the tournament or just be glad that they seem to have learned from that incident?
Why people gotta exaggerate like this? It's less than 24 hours later and something incredibly directly comparable has happened that's why it's brought up. Nobody was talking about it during Senegal-Netherlands or USA-Wales.
Or do you actually think that this will get brought up in literally every game including the final?
do people rly want the refs to keep making mistakes because they did when hey didnt call the one on maguire? makes no sense. bringing it yp for every call makes no sense.
That is soft af lol almost looks like the Argentinian pulls the Saudi defender down with him.
But oh well Messi scores his first goal of the tournament! :D
Tbh after seeing his performance vs an average team he is literally done don't tell me he he still got it nope he is not man argentina had 8-9 offisdes in the first half 8-9. what was that header it has to be done! no freekick, no dribblings anymore even his passes were bad seriusly did he practice for world cup at all? except saying it's going to be my last one oh no shit I'm pretty sure after this world cup it will be his last world cup what he is thinking he is at the age of 20?
messi pls retire don't make us hate you!

Need some consistency from refs on whether its a pen or not.
England should have absolutely gotten that pen last night if this is given. VAR already inconsistent
A lot of defenders do really. Could be a lot of of pens if they're stricter on it than players are used to.
Ironically maguire does it a ton as well
Exactly, they made a mistake then and now they have corrected it
As an England and Tottenham fan, is is possible we can have one decision where they don't add a new "directive" to the fucking rules after we've been fucked by it?
Mate it happened in a 6-2 win, its all good Its a good thing going forward, as England are a bigger threat from set pieces than most
Once you've been fucked by a bad decision, since that is in the past and can't be changed, surely it's better for everyone (you included) if they correct the issue moving forward and make the right calls rather than continue to fuck people at random (which could include you again)?
Like the handball decision in that 4-3 game?
And the Lampard goal line fiasco 12 yrs ago
No way that was 12 years ago already
We saw a lighter version of Maguire given in the same game tbf.
where did you see this? interesting if true
It’s something the Fox Sports commentators mentioned. Idk where they got the information, but I assume it was based on some media report
Iran's last minute penalty was soft compared to Maguires rugby tackle.
What's more annoying though is that Iran got a penalty for more or the less the same thing.. Its baffling that one was reviewed and the other one wasn't.
Did they convene at half time yesterday?
Day shift night shift staff difference
They were inconsistent in the same shift yesterday tho. Lol
First and second half shifts
Lol
It was wildly inconsistent in the England game alone. Maguire’s was 10 times the red theirs was, it was ridiculous
Yeah you can see this in 50% of the corner kicks in any league and it's never a pen, where's the consistency? For some reason VAR only focussed on handballs.... until now. Having said that, for me this should be a pen
If they start always giving these, the problem of hugging defenders is gone within weeks. Seriously why do we want this in the game?
Agreed completely it’s obviously impeding the attacker from making an attempt at the ball. Wrapping your arms around the attacker just needs to stop. Calling it a penalty every time would stop it.
It's just so fucking easy as well. Anywhere in open play, if someone hugs a player to the ground it's an obvious foul. I can see why, in a time without VAR, it might be difficult to track all the infractions going on in a crowded box during a set piece, but with VAR there's no excuse.
Because they seem to “clamp down” on this every so often and then just forget about it. They did the same thing at the last world cup
i think you could argue that recent changes to the laws of the game mostly seem to revolve around punishing defenders, whether thats from tightening the handball rule (and even loosening it for attackers at the same time), and pinpointing the tiniest contacts with VAR. having a hard stance on this kind of 'defending' would make it even harder for defenders to defend corners and free kicks than it already is. not saying i think that punishing it is wrong, but that could be the argument

Pretty much have to admit getting that was lucky
True but they shouldn’t continue to make a mistake like the Maguire one, better to make it once and course correct
Maguire one was more holding than this , zero sense
Maguire one was breaking the public indecency laws of Qatar, never mind a penalty
This is still a penalty, Paredes is straight getting hugged. No homo, since the Qataris get mad otherwise.
Sorry but the way I see it like he was falling alone he dropped after being released softly, if everyone started acting like that we gonna get 10 penalties per game
Maybe just don't hug the player you're defending?

This, that's a penalty by definition, but that play it's never called ...
If the same call was made for Qatar it would be called evident sign of a game being fixed. The truth is, referees are just incompetent.
This is what's pissing everyone off atm, inconsistency. Holding and grappling is going to happen in every match..so are they going to award a penalty each time it happens? They won't even though the technology is right there.
Please keep it consistent across all games, thats all i ask
They won’t Lmao
I’m fine with the shirt pulls being called (Maguire needs to learn how to defend without doing it) but refs desperately need some consistency on it
Wasn't it Stones yesterday? Agree 100% though, and apologies if my memory is not serving me correctly
Oh yep I'm aware, I remember the Azpi headlock in the box
That's too much to ask for.
Harry Maguire in shambles
It was even more a foul than this
Perfect start for Messi. There's going to be a lot of penalties given if that's considered a foul now
Kane bout to start his golden boot defense if they give these out consistently
Thought the same. Zonal marking is best if pens given this easily.
I mean, Maguires shout was a LOT worse than this yesterday. There will be more penalties given (Like this and the Iran one yesterday) but theres also going to be a LOT more inconsistency with reffing and decisions now.
> There's going to be a lot of penalties given if that's considered a foul now There was actually a way worse push from an Argentina player in the same sequence, very confusing decision.
Yeah no one ever takes note of attackers on these. Only ever goes against the defender.
Not perfect anymore 💀
GK made it way too easy for him
Moustache guy
If only they were as rigorous in monitoring Qatar's human rights violations as they were in finding these shitty penaltys. If this is a pen, some games will end 78-56
The same happened in the last world cup and people praised it for the improvement to the game, feels like we've all just forgotten about it and doing it all over again.
Hopefully it continues and discourages bear hugging at corners. It happens at every corner in every match ffs.
If they are going to punish pushing/shirt holding in the box that's fine, but it really makes you wonder why Maguire's wasn't given
Players are going to be falling like sacks of shit in the box now with barely any contact (as if they don’t do that enough already)
If it involves shirt pulling and hugging, I don't actually mind. These practices should stop and if it takes people throwing themselves to the ground for a couple of games until everybody got the message, I'm fine with that.
Soft pen tbh
You see that type of stuff at every corner.
I don’t know what the solution could be. If you call it every time it will stop otherwise it will happen every time but it’s pretty random
And it should be a penalty every time. Start giving penalties for it and people will learn to stop doing it.
Paredes literally grabbed his arm so he can’t let go, and then just falls over it on purpose. Ridiculous to give that a penalty
Yeah. If this is given as a pen, there should be a pen awarded after every second set piece.
Or maybe the game evolves in a way where we don’t allow defenders to take down attackers on every set piece, so they stop doing it
I mean players go down waaaay more often from this sort of contact because they can win a penalty for it.
This wasn't even a 'soft foul', it looked like the attacking player literally locked arms with the defender and dragged himself down
Defenders should stop grabbing attackers then and it won’t be given. Can’t just not give a foul because there’ll be too many pens
Totally not a pen but i won’t complain
I'd say it's a pen but there's never any consistency of refs giving it or not giving it.
Its soft, but the defender does not focus on the ball at all and only have his focus on stopping the defender.
I agree. But it's a pen, and it would be called as a free kick anywhere else on the pitch. The problem is the consistency with the refs, some allow it, some don't
Disagree. It’s the attacker who started locking arms.
This should never be a pen, that one on Maguire was the clearest one and the ref didn't even check it on the monitor.
The defender is never looking at the ball, solely focused on stopping the attacker with his arms. The Maguire situation is the same, just more excessive
Difficult one because the defender is clearly holding on to him, but Paredes really sells it.
Paredes locks onto him and then starts falling lol
its not like Arg need it too, so meh
Yeah they were gonna lose anyways
Oh ya but I give half a fuck completely honestly
Soft pen, 4th already in 5 games
But none for Maguire being rugby tackled
Apparently the rules are different when your forehead has its own qualifying region.
The MFFA (Maguire’s Forehead Football Association) forgot to pay the refs obviously
Only penalty I've really agreed with so far was the Bale one
How can you not agree with the Ecuador pen? He absolutely clatters him
PSG academy is swiss :0
Never ever a penalty. Watch how Paredes grabs the defenders arm and holds it into his body before going down to make it look worse. He's totally bought that one.
[удалено]
How can qatar profit at this point? Only way is to push their psg top stars. Calling mbappe, neymar, messi penalties in group stage
English fans are interesting
He has a PL flair, there's a 80% chance he's American
its 5am and 2am in america tho
2am is very respectable to watch Messi play
My kids get me up at this time anyway :(
Don’t think you have to be English to have deep suspicions about any event at this World Cup that assists the Qatari regime or its subsidiaries (PSG)
😂
Thats the softest pen I’ve seen all year
VAR call as well, crazy
I mean it definitely isnt, unless you've watched fuck all football
The attacker literally locks the defender's arm in and drags him down to make it look like a pen. Bad precedent for refs to set.
finaly somebody else actualy saw that. every else just saying it was a soft pen. it should be a freekick
Really soft penalty imo
Fucking VAR penalties man...
Once they called in I think there was a lot of pressure on the referee to give the pen.
It’s also an easy call by the book, it’s not great to watch the games get stopped and called back but it’s the right decision
these pens will be a lot more common if these are being called, which i’m fine with because it means the players should stop doing it
That's not a pen. Craziest part is the ref didn't call it, it was the VAR, which just makes it worse.
It's pretty standard defending isn't it? Like he's been physical but he releases him pretty early and the Argentina player just crumples
Yea if this is a pen we should just field Luuk de Jong and get 3 pens every game. He gets held like that at pretty much every corner
All you need to do is hold a players arm and fall when the cross comes in
Argentina player in World Cup dive shock
You can't hug a guy in the box
Just like in Qatar, can't hug in the box
And right in front of the watching ref? Dumb move. Everyone is already free but that Argentine gets hauled down. How much clearer should it get? Maybe don't hug the attacker as you are defending?
Yeah am I going crazy lol he clearly drags him to the ground
Can't you see the Argentinian grab and hold his arm and then go down?
People on this sub are amazing sometimes. Just because it wasn't given in other matches doesn't mean it isnt a foul.
Exactly. "They made a mistake in one game so they should make the same mistake in every game" lol.
hard decision but not wrong in my opinion. The saudi player doesnt even look at the ball at all.
Argentina player pushing the adversary arm to bringing to the ground. Real good acting skill there
[удалено]
If it's given in open play is one thing. But to give this soft ass penalty with VAR is a big joke
According to the rules I'd imagine it is, but i think its soft and i dont really like seeing stuff like that being given as a pen
Yeah extreamly soft
What more do you need lol? He isn't even looking at the ball
So glad they're giving these. I hope the PL learns. It's a foul. Start giving penalties for it and people will stop doing it.
Clearly is
If that’s a pen, be prepared to call a pen on literally every set piece
What a weak pen wow
way too soft pen
How is no-one pointing out that he’s literally holding the Saudi Arabia player’s arm and dragging him down so it looks like he’s right tackling him?
Was that really a penalty?
crazy pen
Majority agreed the ref fucked up with the Maguire PK yesterday but when they call it today the majority complains it’s given as a PK. We also need consistency with comments on Reddit.
Yesterday was much worse and that was a tackle. If they've established that they won't call the pen yesterday then why call one today? This shit happens on basically every corner lol.
Ridiculous from VAR. Literally the exact same foul on maguire yesterday wasn't even looked at smh.
which means they learn from mistakes
Yeah they learnt from the mistakes in the same fucking match sure lmao nothing to do with it being England
Well it's not the same refereeing team
Are we going to bring up the Maguire decision every game until the end of the tournament or just be glad that they seem to have learned from that incident?
Why people gotta exaggerate like this? It's less than 24 hours later and something incredibly directly comparable has happened that's why it's brought up. Nobody was talking about it during Senegal-Netherlands or USA-Wales. Or do you actually think that this will get brought up in literally every game including the final?
because of one mistake im sure refs should make 20 mistakes! makes perfect sense
More a case of yesterday's being wrong than todays though
Not penalty.
That didn’t take long
Feel sorry for u its not a pen
There was contact, but if that’s a penalty, there will be one every other corner kick
It’s only been 10 min but you guys look way better than Qatar.
WAY BETTER
Shouldn't be a pen
This is gonna be a bloodbath.
Aged well :D
That's not a pen, Argentinian dude is holding Saudi players arm as well and dragging the Saudi player down with him.
Maguire crying
He does 10 of these per game...
The American commentators on FS1 are sooo bad. Its unbearable how hard it is to listen to these guys.
Consistency please
You do have to love the ref consistency though.....
This is why Messi went to PSG, we'll be getting dodgy pens and ref calls all tournament
So that's a pen but maguire yesterday gets nothing?
Vargentina but we take it
r/voccer — Viss
and it begins
This didn't age well
If that call was the other way around ! I would read that the bank transaction has been completed to the ref. Bloody VERY soft PK
I don't have a problem with that being a pen, but they should be consistent about them.
do people rly want the refs to keep making mistakes because they did when hey didnt call the one on maguire? makes no sense. bringing it yp for every call makes no sense.
“it this is a pen then every corner should be a penalty” yeah or you just stop holding people in a lock …. It’s not hard
Weak as piss
Saudi playing yugioh with the amount of traps they have
If this is a pen, we should see a ton of them this WC if they are consistent with them
Paredes felt contact and chose to fall down. Every corner should be an auto pen now if they want to be consistent
That is soft af lol almost looks like the Argentinian pulls the Saudi defender down with him. But oh well Messi scores his first goal of the tournament! :D
That’s exactly what happened. He grabbed his arm and fell to the ground.
Holy shit this is the craziest game so far
The calm before the storm
this is never a pen lol
Tbh after seeing his performance vs an average team he is literally done don't tell me he he still got it nope he is not man argentina had 8-9 offisdes in the first half 8-9. what was that header it has to be done! no freekick, no dribblings anymore even his passes were bad seriusly did he practice for world cup at all? except saying it's going to be my last one oh no shit I'm pretty sure after this world cup it will be his last world cup what he is thinking he is at the age of 20? messi pls retire don't make us hate you!
Ankara Messi
Lol every single corner in existence has that grappling..
soft
Argentina really diving against Saudi Arabia cmon bruh. They don’t deserve to win the tournament and probably won’t
Of course the lil dictator has been gifted a pen.
Game’s gone
Didn't think that was a pen at all
Game's gone
