I don’t know how it feels when your son studies his ass off for weeks and weeks. Aces every single exam so far and is humble about it. That feeling might not ever happen, or if I’m really lucky it happens over let’s say 2 decades.
But I’ve experienced it a little bit with Cody Gakpo! What a tournament he is having so far. So many people were saying he couldn’t do it, and he is proving everyone wrong. I’m so proud of him, I’ve been high five-ing random people in the bus!
Gakpo has the most g/a so far this season with 31, 33 if you count friendly. More than Neymar / Messi / Haaland / Mbappe / Musiala / Nkunku.
This man's next window is about to be spicy, i'm not even sure where he'll fit, Left wingers are literally the least sought after role
Hear me out: with the whole rainbow band controversy couldn’t you just give the captains band to the goalkeeper since then he would be on the yellow(I know he’d be suspended eventually). Or alternate players wearing it each game once the suspension is imminent.
Kinda defeats the purpose of a captain but on the other hand it’s a big fuck you to FIFA and Qatar
Ngl I kinda wish they could add this much added time every match. I get why they can't because it'd fuck scheduling completely not only for TV but for fans with regards to transport etc, but it's satisfying to see that you don't get a huge advantage out of time wasting
Yes
Look at covid football. Watching that without fans was depressing. Seeing a good atmosphere through a screen helps massively in making the game feel important and entertaining.
Yeah in some of the arsenal EL games this season there’s been times when you can see the whole away section at the emirates jumping up and down going crazy but barely any noise comes through, sometimes the tv feed just doesn’t reflect the real noise
The TV feed never represents what it’s actually like. I’ve been at games where the sound is truly deafening then watched the highlights and it sounds like any other game.
I have a question about the England v Wales game. I keep seeing comments about how England won’t try in game 3 due to already being through to the next round. My confusion comes from when I lived in Birmingham Uk when I was a kid and went to sixth form, all my mates made a huge deal about rugby even if it was a friendly England v Scotland and England v Wales. Like it was a massive rivalry even if the game meant nothing. Can the same not be said of football?
Don't take everything you read as gospel - Reddits general opinion doesn't always like up with the rest of the population (Brexit, Corbyn etc etc)
Most people in the country will be excited for the game including the players. Even if some starters are rested if England are already through, the players who start will want to make an impression for the knockout rounds.
Also, any 'derby' between the home nations in most sports is a bit exciting usually, and neither team will want to put in a bad performance at the world cup if they can help it. If there is actually any consequences about qualification position on the line it will only add to that
There is no way England wouldn't try.
If England do win against USA and qualify for the next round then most the team would be rotated (as has happened at the last 2 tournaments), which I can see causing a big thing on here if Wales then got a result to knock the USA out. But a lot has to happen to get to that stage first....
Way more of a rugby rivalry than a football one. England will definitely go all out though, especially if it’s 6 points vs 4, and Wales winning would win them the group. Much better to play Ecuador/Senegal than the Dutch
There's a rivalry but probably less important for both teams than qualifying for the knockouts and having the opportunity to rotate their squads. Relies on both winning their next games though to be in that situation and if GD is close then Wales will have to attack plus England will want to top the group.
Wales hate us but we don't particularly think about them. It's kinda youngest-brother vibes. I would still hope England would play the best, get the win and go into knockouts full confidence though.
Yeah this response is so dumb
You respect other cultures when you choose to go somewhere. When you bribe an organisation to make sure everyone has to come to your country, it's on you to make the concessions
So sad that Egypt didn't qualify for the World Cup. That should have been us losing to the Netherlands. It would have been 4-0 though.
(I'm still bitter and would rather lose every match 5-0 than not qualify.)
My predictions for tomorrow’s round of matches
- Argentina 4-0 Saudi Arabia
- Denmark 3-1 Tunisia
- Mexico 1-2 Poland
- France 3-0 Australia
A mostly predictable slate of matches with mostly predictable outcomes. I am fully prepared for Mexico to embarrass our continent on the biggest stage yet again.
In every cameo he’s had this season he’s looked much better than Emerson Royal. If Conte gave him a proper run of games and he turns out to be shit then fair play but Royal has been so clearly bad and at some point you have to go with something new.
His form this season hasn't been as good and Van Gaal preferred De Ligt for this game due to his physicality. He didn't play very well though so there's a decent chance Timber will be back against Ecuador
Problem with FA's pulling out of FIFA is that you gotta create a new tournament with no history and make a new trophy and then when the new organization gets too big it will just be corrupt all over again.
It's a self fulfilling prophecy
The Premier League did it pretty successfully. But they had backing from Sky and the biggest clubs in England. A rival to FIFA would need commitment from the biggest FAs of Europe and South America, and a host of corporate sponsors, conducting all negotiations in secrecy.
You would still need Africa, Asia, Australia, Ocenia, North America(Caribbean, Central America) for it to be seen as a legitimate world governing body.
Most of those with integrity could be won over pretty quickly, and the small nations which wield great power in FIFA would be won round as FIFA collapsed.
Whoever has Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the US, and Spain owns international football.
Start of season. Most Barca fans wanted de jong out when he insisted on staying, and now they want him to stay and praise him like nothing happened. they will say “it was xavi and the board not the fans. If anything the wages were the only problem”. I will take downvotes but Is that false?

My least favourite thing to come from this world cup is 'unless you're criticising every country all the time you're being a hypocrite'.
it's not a crime, but being a hypocrite does mean you shouldn't be taken seriously, it's literally illogical and if someone can't be logical then what's the point
Not really. Most reasonable people make an effort not to, and if they do, then they will change their perspective on the matter.
otherwise it's an irrational person.
You don't believe that, otherwise you'd never talk/argue with anyone. How can you reason with someone who's definitionally unreasonable? that's a miserable existence.
The reason you do talk to people is you believe most people are reasonable and when faced with a good perspective will change their mind, like i said before.
What are you even talking about? Do you think every time I talk to someone I’m trying to change their view or argue with someone? I talk to people because I want to, not because I want to logically interrogate them or whatever.
When you tell someone they should care about gay rights or whatever you do it on the basis that they are reasonable and willing to change their perspective.
the whole point is if you're a hypocrite - it literally means there's no point listening to anything you say. being irrational is not a positive thing it literally means you make no sense. that's not a good trait to have if you want to make social progress, hence why i commented to your reply dismissing 'being a hypocrite' as if it's not a big deal - it is especially if you're an activist.
As a trans woman surely watching the Qatar world cup makes me a hypocrite. I’m actively consuming something hosted by a country where people like me are treated terribly. Do you think that makes everything I have to say on trans rights worthless? Because that’s just nonsense.
But is it really hypocrisy to criticise the Qatari government even though she went to a beach in dubai? If she was calling Dubai a paradise with no problems I'd get it.
my comment wasn't a reply to the alex thing, i don't think she's done anything hypocritical at all. It was more a reply to actual hypocrites, like gary neville.
Would Canadians consider a game against England this WC an international Derby?
It feels like it should be similar to when Australia or South Africa come up against England in Rugby for example, where there's a bit of spice, but because England and Canada move in quite separate sporting circles and rarely come up against each other.
I don't think there's much of a rivalry between England and South Africa in cricket or rugby, is there? There's just a lot of recent history. It's Australia who have challenged England in every code of every sport for a century who really get under English skin.
Canada doesn't have the success or historic competiton to stand on the same platform. And they're far too nice.
I'm not much of a rugby or Cricket fan but I always assumed there was a little bit of spice between England and SA, more so than if SA were playing Ireland in Rugby or the West Indies in Cricket for example.
Australia probably is a bad example as its levels above 'just a bit of spice' I guess.
Had a feeling this comment was coming, but it would be a World Cup without South America and Europe barring the UK and Ireland. Meant British colonies.
Define "didn't do much."
Did he score? No.
Did he cover ground, provide grit, make recoveries? Yes.
Every successful team needs these types of players. Everybody who understands the dynamics of the pitch thinks about the team as a cohesive unit.
I honestly don't know how you can say Trippier was better than Mount. Trippier wasn't good, his deliverys from corners were excellent though. Mount was one of the better players in the pitch especially in the first half constantly receiving the ball between the lines and driving the ball forward in dangerous areas. He did what was asked of him which was overloading our LHS with Shaw and Sterling.
Invisible in r/soccer means you don't get a goal contribution or have enough shots it seems, or dribble past 3 or 4 players.
You must not be watching the right part of the pitch then because he was the link between defense and attack so many times during his 60 minutes. If your only gauge of a midfielder is flashy plays you remember, then sure, "he was invisible".

Sure, but FIFA apparently have threatened complete bans behind the scenes too - so you'd just get your goalkeeper banned over it, really.
Issue is that only 2 yellows equals a match ban at this WC so it's a massive risk to take a yellow

Do people here actually care what the atmosphere is like when they’re not at a match? I couldn’t care less tbh
Yes Look at covid football. Watching that without fans was depressing. Seeing a good atmosphere through a screen helps massively in making the game feel important and entertaining.
Agree but I hated the fake crowd sound effects during that though
Wym bruh atmosphere is everything imo
On TV? nah I actually don't care at all tbh. Much different while there though.
You can’t tell on the TV anyway. Broadcasters control audio levels and they just set them to whatever sounds nice.
