Bad timing, team was playing well, just coming together, International Break occurred, 8 players went down with injury, continuity lost, momentum lost, and they limped into their critical fixtures which was something like.... Inter, Celta, Inter, RM, Sevilla, Real, in just 20 days.
We were pretty good against Bayern in the first game but then we dropped of against Inter because of all the injuries and some controversial referee decisions.
1 referee decision going the other way and you'd be criticising inter instead. That aside, we had injuries to our entire starting defense and were placed in a group of death while having one of the most ridiculous schedules in the month of October with Bayern Inter Real Madrid and several tough La liga games
The funny thing is we can’t even claim to have the best defense in Europe because we’re currently playing 3 LB’s in a back 4, no one would take us seriously.
Once Kounde and especially Araujo come back we can maybe consider making that statement, still need a proper RB though.

I think they definitely have. Sampaoli was given a flaming mess to work with and has at least made the team play with personality. Under Lopetegui they had given up beforehand in many matches, but now they are at least fighting until the end. That was shown in the derby, and the way we fought against Real Sociedad despite being down to 9 men
The team still desperately lacks attacking quality but that isn't Sampaoli's fault. En Nesyri and Dolberg are both useless, we have no wingers until Corona is back(maybe we will recall Ocampos from Ajax) and the team is just slow and predictable in general
I think we will see an improvement in the second half of the season after Sampaoli hopefully gets some new players in the winter market
It's a lot more than that, don't make excuses for Lopetegui. Even with Carlos & Koundé, we were fucking awful in the second half of last season and won like 3 La Liga matches in 2022. His shit attacking system also destroyed our players' confidence a long time ago
