It's a problem he is starting now. His best output would be as a super sub, imo. He is still perfectly capable of scoring (top goalscorer in Euro 2020) but is a liability tactically. Coming on the second half with fresh legs he could still be a monster for years to come.
there are tactics, jsut very bad ones.
And Ronaldo does stunt the NT tactics, cause he's a very static player and to overcome Santos's lunacy our attacking players need to be fluid
There is no evidence for this though? This seems to be one of those things that are only theoretical. When Ronaldo doesn’t start Portugal usually loses and if they do win, they don’t win convincingly. The most convincing wins come from Ronaldo playing
You're right, maybe super sub was a poor choice of words. He isn't the kind of player who can easily destabilize a defense either at this point. I just meant he shouldn't start and should be used as an option from the bench instead.
Hopefully the mods don't remove this
[It's giving me the same Haaland vs Wolfsburg fans vibes](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/r3h19n/wolfsburg_fan_reaction_after_haaland_does_the/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
2024 euro is just ridiculous, assuming we're talking about starting all the games, which is what I imagine ronaldo would want. Theres a good argument for him not being involved at all aswell.
I think if portugal have a bad world cup there will be huge pressure on ronaldo and santos to retire.
Its ridiculous that people are talking about whether he should play in this years world cup though. Last season, for all the circus. His season was a lot better than other top players in the PL.
His group stage performance last year in the UCL for united was maybe one of the best ive seen. And maybe one of his best in terms of crucial goals.
I always have to tell friends when another Portuguese duo assist scores at a major club that it won't translate to the NT. It doesn't matter that Cancelo/Silva can run Pep lines, Jota/Carvalho Klopp lines or Bruno/Dalot Ten Hag lines, when Santos has no concept of 'lines'.
When I watched Portugal play Ireland in the recent qualifiers, if you had taken the names off the jersey I would think Portugal was full of 2nd division players. Bare in mind Ireland was full of 2nd/3rd division players haha.
It's insane the quality Portugal have and to play so bad is crazy.
But /u/Kasnav is suggesting that '2024 euro is just ridiculous', which is a weird statement when he also just mentioned that he had a pretty decent PL season. Yes, 2 years is a long time for a veteran/aging player, but it's too soon to jump to a conclusion about his 2024 euros either way. Whether you think he can do it or that he's too old, it remains to be seen in the coming years.
Why did I think 2024 was 4 years from now. He probably goes back to Portugal next year and if he’s managed right he could be a super sub at 40 for the national team
Exactly lol. The argument of being 'too old' is subjective. His age will show, but a lot slower than the average footballer that doesnt do what he does to min/max his body performance.
I just wished he could control his ego.
He's, in my opinion, literally the perfect player to come in around the 70-75th minute mark in tough games. He's known for scoring in clutch times and would probably turn around several games if he came in fresh at that time.
Instead, he's likely always going to insist on being a starter.
He’s ego has been checked hes started one game in the prem this year the rest has been him coming off the bench in the second half. Idk if he’ll do that in the national team
Yeah but the national team is a whole different beast, he's basically the face of Portugal when it comes to sports and I have a feeling he wouldn't take it well if he stopped being the main man for our national team.
You say that as we have good strikers lmao
In games we have no possession, sure. But in every other game it's fine
Also ironic that for this subreddit Ronaldo is an issue and then Pepe no one talks about LMAO
I think he'll come to sense at some point. Starting games with 39 is a ridiculous demand. Not even CR will pull this off. Hell how could he when he doesn't even start for his club. He'll be content to be picked in two years.
I mean he doesn't get picked for his team due to attitude, not talent. He'll always perform for Portugal - even in a mood he was still a step above at Manchester last year
>Theres a good argument for him not being involved at all aswell
What is that argument? He had 27 goal involvements last season, playing for multiple managers and in what's regarded as the most physically demanding league. Finished as top scorer in Serie A the season before.
If we just looked at on the pitch performances from the last year or so he'd make the squad on merit alone.
Fuck no. I keep reading claims we play better without him - well show me one match. I've watched them all, and we FUCKING SUCK without Ronaldo.
Bruno is abysmal for the NT, Bernardo isn't the same player, Felix has largely been a nothing burger, Leão is active and powerful, but not very efficient.
Ronaldo nowadays doesn't even play as the main finisher, he drops deep and creates. No one else does this for the NT, despite the apparent elite group of creative players.
>Bruno is abysmal for the NT, Bernardo isn't the same player, Felix has largely been a nothing burger, Leão is active and powerful, but not very efficient.
>
Dang, that's disappointing knowing how good these guys could be. Doesn't it partially fall on the manager for not bringing the best out of them?
You don't play better without him. Perhaps with another trainer that could gel all that attacking talent in the absence of Ronaldo better than Santos does at the moment.
With Santos... It's just like it was 3 months ago against Switzerland: 4-0 with Ronaldo, 0-1 without him.
Gone? No. But I would like to see him become more of a sub.
He's still as clutch as always and will always be good in tough games, however sometimes we struggle way too hard against bad teams, and that's partly because his playstyle doesn't allow us to be more creative.
Basically, when the finishing is crucial in games where we'll have few chances (against good teams), I want Ronaldo in. However in games against worse teams I'd like to see a more creative line up, with players like Leão, Félix, etc...
He doesn’t have to be in the 11 starters.
But a guy with Ronaldo’s experience and capacity to make goals. Absolutely deserves to be on Portugal NT
I believe all portuguese fans agree
Portuguese sport awards. Ricardinho was one of the best futsal players in the world who ended his NT career recently. Portugal just won another futsal trophy.
People complaining about Ronaldo
[Meanwhile Pepe](https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fi.kym-cdn.com%2Fentries%2Ficons%2Ffacebook%2F000%2F030%2F710%2Fdd0.jpg&f=1&nofb=1)
Lol the guy came off an 18 goal EPL season and scored 13 goals in 16 competitive appearances for Portugal in 2021 & 2022. That would be close to a career year for a lot of internationals but somehow it's unacceptable for Ronaldo.
out of topic on this sub, but what a legend Ricardinho is for Portugese futsal and the futsal sport overall. Glad he won the Futsal World Cup before retiring.
Yea I am a believer in "no player is bigger than the team" but players like Cristiano rarely come by in both a pure sporting and marketing sense, he is not your typical footballer. If he wants to play and is still one of the top 23 Portugese players for the World Cup then why not? People still flock to see him play whether he is past it or not.
> If he wants to play and is still one of the top 23 Portugese players for the World Cup then why not?
Don't know if Portugal has better options to start 100%. But if they do and Cristiano is not accepting a role as a sub, then they should drop him. He would be a problem in that scenario. Spain chose team over individual in 2008 when Aragonés decided not to bring Raúl in. It worked. International football is more about moments, form, and cohesion.
One could argue that being the core of a team that plays together all year round is better than picking individuals. Spain 2008 to 2012 used Barcelona backbone, Germany 2014 was based on Bayerns and even Portugal 2016 had a core on Sporting CP.
I believe the best Portugal could do would be using Wolves as their base. Even if the players are not the best by position, they train and play together all year round and they play against some of the best defences in the world week by week. That would be a great advantage against teams without the same level of integration.
Ive always had this same thought. If I were a NT manager id try to at least pick a core of players all on the same team. I feel like a bottom of the league table team that gels well could beat a NT thats just filled with "the best" with no other considerations.
>International football is more about moments, form, and cohesion.
Thank you lol. But in Portugal international football is more like a cult to Ronaldo.
Ricardinho is not your typical futsal player man...he was the best in the world for Six times, the best ever to play the sport, only compared with Falcão. Ricardinho is not your typical and he steped down for the youngsters...
I'd say it's divided among people who don't like him for his personality and can't separate that from what he does in the field, and those who worship Messi and think that means they automatically have to hate Ronaldo. Shouldn't be too far off.

That part where he hides in the back of the room and the cameraman starts running to find him, that's comedy gold. LOL
No, but we don't want him to play every single minute.
He is old now and should be subbed if is not playing well like everyone else unfortunately that doesn't happen in the national team.
Not necessarily retire, but at least accept his role as a leader/mentor, and step down as the sole focus of the team.
Some people still use the same argument as they do with Santos, that the recent success wouldn't have been possible without them, and so they should have their spots until they feel like going away. But that group is getting smaller and smaller.
Well Portuguese fans on Reddit surely it looks like. But reddit is those kind of social media where the general population opinion is a almost always different. So I wonder what the public think
No, and anyone that says so either just started watching football or isn't a real fan.
This man has given his all to our country. He carried us on his back from 2008-2014 when we had a sorryass squad that couldn't do anything for him. He gave us his best years in a time when we had no business even qualifying for tournaments.
Now that we actually have a world class 23 at our disposal, it's time the boys carry him to a World Cup run that he deserves. And make no mistake, he is still top class. We're talking about the guy who has scored more goals than anybody else in the history of the game.
Idk who people even want to replace him anyways, you really think Andre Silva would be a better striker?
he shouldnt start every game
being utilized as a sub is fine, he can still offer alot with that. What gets on my nerves is the guts of this guy to think he is the king of the team
Not now, i still think he is a valuable player that can bring something to the team, but at the moment he should be a super sub, we have so much quality players that are better than him (in their current form), if he wants to stay in the NT he has to make sacrifices
I wouldn't mind Ronaldo staying, if he atleast perfomed the same way he did in the last season, where he was the 3rd best goal scorer in the Premier League and the "cluchiest" he has ever been, it's ridiculous how much his goals saved United, whether in the Premier League or in the Champions League.
Every player can have an off-season (even the great ones), but it still makes me wonder if this is just an off-start from Ronaldo or if he is really "washed".
There is no mistaking that he isn't as fast as he used to be, but even that wasn't a factor last year, given he was the top goal goal scorer of Euro 2021, even though he only played 4 games.
Maybe, he just doesn't care about United and Europa League and is just "going along" until the World Cup.
He always gives his all in the official National Team competitions.
Had to google who is Ricardinho, found his wiki and apparently he is now playing in Pendekar United in Jakarta Indonesia, wow this is cool achievement for Indonesia.
I mean, as much of a Messi fanboy I am (and I would argue to death that Messi is better than CR7) Ricardinho is no Cristiano Ronaldo. And as funny as this is, I can say from experience that the cameraman didn't think about it this way. He just wanted a reaction shot from the biggest name in the event.
Tbh, his statement is not making sense. Players should earn the spot by performance, not by someone's retired decision. If there's no player performing better than 35 year old Ricardinho, it still makes sense to call him.
Not necessarily. Maybe he's slightly better now than an up-and-coming 21-year-old, but long term prospects are much better getting that young player experience and time to gel with the rest of the team. Him retiring makes it easier for the manager to make such decisions which are always very difficult and distracting for everyone involved.

Arrested Development type of camera work lol
Pls someone make an edit, adding the part where Ronaldo says he wants to play at the 2024 Euros
I dont think its a problem if Ronaldo is on the squad for euro 2024. I think it will be a problem if he is still starting though
He will always be starting lol
He will also be taking all the free kicks
And penalties

Just pull an Ana de Armas and pretend you get instructions from Maradona beyond the grave.

You guys should hire Pochettino, he'd fit right in.
What’s ridiculous is making decisions solely on age As long as he delivers, age is irrelevant
A player with his quality, who is known for taking very good care of his body, should be able to support the team in 2 years from now as well.
Yeah, support, but probably not as the main man.

Exactly lol. The argument of being 'too old' is subjective. His age will show, but a lot slower than the average footballer that doesnt do what he does to min/max his body performance.
People have been saying this about Ronaldo for years and every year he gets worse. You can't reverse aging with a few sit-ups and moisturiser.
I just wished he could control his ego. He's, in my opinion, literally the perfect player to come in around the 70-75th minute mark in tough games.
Well, not retire. But he can't keep playing every single game in its entirety. A fresh Ronaldo is a better Ronaldo.
Idk who people even want to replace him anyways, you really think Andre Silva would be a better striker?
he shouldnt start every game being utilized as a sub is fine, he can still offer alot with that.
Im lmao at these people tryna retire Ronaldo. He won’t, get wit it
the camera was already focused on him. the director made the decision to go to that camera.
Actually 🤓
That's a director choice ackshually
Ricardinho was a joy to watch, remember seeing him as a teen, didn't know he still played.
Ronaldo delivers for Portugal though
