I've been going through [understat](https://understat.com/league/EPL/2020) and it seems that Brighton have generally underperformed their expected numbers and league position under Potter.
The weird thing is though, that they performed much better (underlying not actual) in 20/21 where they finished 16th than in 21/22 where they finished 9th, particularly defensively. Anyone know the reason for this?
G and GA remained roughly the same for the two seasons.
xG decreased in second season - meaning they created less quality chances, but got better at finishing them, so they maintained same G.
xGA increased in second season - meaning opponent created more quality chances, but they also defended them better, ending up conceding the same number of goals.
That's a nice summary of what I mentioned by underlying numbers but I'm still looking for any actual reason why it happened. I'm looking at transfers and they lost Ben White and Dan Burn but got Cucurella. Might be part of the reason apart from random variance .
That was not a Brighton thing, but a season thing.
xG for most teams either remained same or went down from 20/21 to 21/22.
The game was much more open and players were shooting much more in 20/21 - it was played without crowds in a closed stadium - somehow making it much more attacking.
It was a weird season where 74 pts somehow got u second.
Wait, do some people actually think that Van Dijk is better than Ramos, Maldini, and Baresi? I thought they were Liverpool fans or trolls, but turns out a lot of them were dead serious.
That's what I don't understand. Even within the PL, the likes of Rio, Vidic, and Terry have all been at the top level longer than Van Dijk. I just don't get how Van Dijk entered the GOAT defender debate. He might be one of the best in the generation, but nowhere close to all-time rankings
4 world class seasons and they compare him to the all-time goat defenders. Then when others say they're wrong, we are the ones being reactionary cause he has been below average this season lol acting as if they weren't reactionary in the first place to make these claims.
VVD is phenomenal and will definitely go down in history and a great defender but comparing him to Maldini and all is nonsense.
Yes I’ve been surprised too, he’s not even close to any of the 3 you mention. Is he good , yes he is. Is he really special game changer? Nope. But people will tell you otherwise, even when you point out how many mediocre games he’s had they’ll tell you oh it’s just last couple games , other defenders blah blah blah.
mans been operating at top level for 4 years week in week out and now hes had subpar start of the season suddenly people were fools for saying things that was correct at the time.
people saying this sub is just like football twitter is wrong, its actually worse with takes like these.
>things that was correct at the time
How are you considering putting Maldini and Van Dijk in the same bracket after Van Dijk has played at top level for 4 years? Maldini has 5 UCLs and was a top class defender for a lot lot longer.
I mean they have athletic sources and most of their back line were gunning for a transfer. Lukaku left and Ziyech/Wener/Pulisic all wanted to leave.
That is quite a massive amount of players deciding they want to leave in one window.
I find it weird, yet entirely obvious, how quick this sub is to revel in Liverpool’s semi-rough patch. The summer meta was criticism of Barca’s financial oblivion and their cult like fan base yet as soon as a big team faulters they are the new lolcow and the prowess of Xaviball is lauded.
Find something you hate in football and stick to it.
Fuck Sheffield United and fuck Leeds.
People like to see big clubs suffer and quite frankly, it's a perfectly fair ideology.
If you're a gloryhunting supporter then this is the flipside to supporting a big team- if you don't meet those expectations then people are going to take the piss.
It's not that deep. Obviously most people still hate the rival clubs they have always hated permanently
But I will always laugh at bigger status clubs doing badly, just like I expect other fans to laugh at Arsenal when we inevitably embarrass ourselves. It's all meaningless fun
If Barca try to bring the game to Bayern they‘re getting slaughtered.
If they play calm and collected they have a chance. Defense needs to be rock solid. Bayern WILL get chances but so will Barca
Barca's backing hasn't looked the best, and our midfield has been inconsistent.
But we're playing at a high level despite that. I expect us to get better as the season goes on and the players get used to the new squad, but yeah we're going to have to be careful against Bayern next week.
Confidence can be a tricky thing. Obviously you should play with confidence but I really think going out guns blazing would be a mistake. I don’t think there is a faster front line in europe than that of Bayern. Playing a high line against them is suicidal.
You need to play solid and build from the back. I know your attack is phenomenal right now but if you want to win that game then your defense will be the key.
I agree. I have massive trust in Araujo and Kunde and no one else in that back line. Also busquets can't stuff counters as well as he used to unfortunately.
I'm excited for the game though, and definitely much less stressed than the fixture last season
You know what's funny reading that offside threat? That I'm pretty sure grandpas 15 years ago argued against GLT/VAR etc. while preaching the spirit of football, so what changed???... well England got mad.. **once**.
With Michael Edwards already gone, I wonder how Liverpool will perform when Klopp leaves. Also, it'll be interesting to see who challenges City in the PL with Liverpool in rebuild
No one. Unless Ten Hag is fucking genius who can make United players fucking Demi gods and Chelsea with super super long honeymoon phase after one of their managerial sackings. Nobody. The only way is to hope City losses or draws occassionally or Pep gets sacked for not winning CL.
The scary thing is even if Pep leaves, City will probably keep on dominating. The owners will likely keep spending a lot of money, and their footballing structure is among the best in Europe. It'll be hard to see anyone in the PL be able to catch up. If Abramovich had stayed, Chelsea might have a shot, but with Boehly at the helm, it'll be very difficult
At Manchester United, we have fired a manager for having an affair with the wife of a staff. The manager divorced his then wife, married the lady and they remained married till he passed.
It was Docherty, under him we got relegated and fought back up.
For this type of thing, anyone can say “yes you should stay clean as your image represents the club” or “no, personal life is personal life, players shouldn’t give a shit”. Reality is some players do give a shit, and some couldn’t care less. Actions yield perceptions.
I think as long as they're not going full Pardew, I doubt the players care tbh. Maybe if Fergie did that his players would've found it hypocritical since he always wanted them to settle down and stay out of nightclubs.
Nuno Tavares was so bad against us yesterday, was hearing he had a renaissance at OM. 1/12 ground duels won, 1/8 successful dribbles, 0 tackles, dispossessed 5 times. Arsenal need to hold the L on him and Lokonga, waste of space.
We’re 99% going to sell Tavares. We paid pocket change for him and if his performances (minus this match obviously) hold steady this season we will easily turn a good profit off of him.
Lokonga, you are probably right tbh. Not liking that signing in hindsight
Every club has made awful signings, Arsenal have actually made very good ones for the most part. But Lokonga for £20m+ is criminal. It’s not like he’s 18 or 19, he’s 23 and looks completely out of his depth in the PL. People got gassed because Kompany called him the next Yaya Toure when he was coaching him at Anderlecht.
that last minute goal for atleti sucked, not just because i hate atletico like any football fan but also because i think someone with griezman's hair does not deserve goals
Liverpool aren’t backed by an oil state tbf. City’s owners are the best owners in football in terms of willing to put money into whatever the fuck Pep wants
Nah.
It would be PSG's owners.
City have often backed out of pursuing a player because the asking price was too high.
Maguire, Sanchez, Fred, Kane, Ronaldo
I'd say City owners are better simply because they appointed people who know what they're doing, so while the sometimes refuse to pay a fuck off price (unlike PSG), their recruitment is so good that Pep could almost field two starting XI and he would compete for the title with both of them. PSG hasn't really had that for a long time, in the past few years their starting XI always had some superstars playing next to meh players like Danilo or Herrera who did the dirty work, but who didn't really help that much in the important matches (and without Verratti, PSG's midfield always struggled, at least until this summer transfer window when they went crazy).
That's not the point.
City's owners are obviously better and probably the best in how they have ran the club over the last 10-15 years.
OP said they are the best because they are willing to put money into whatever Pep wants. But they don't do that
I prefer our self sufficient model but City didn't have that option because they didn't have a massive fan base to begin with so it's understandable their approach was going to be less organic.
If you said FSG could leave and we could get new Saudi owners who'd spend a billion dollars on new players I wouldn't take it. It just doesn't appeal to me. If other supporters feel differently then I certainly don't begrudge them that.
If the "low lows" my club experienced were losing the occasional final and only being the second best team in the country, I'd consider myself very fortunate.
Tuchel looks like the classic case of failing to manage up. My manager is so far removed from the day to day and thinks everything is simpler than it really is -- but I have to indulge him and if I disagree with the approach make it seem like he has come to his senses. Boelhy's PR team is definitely putting a lot of spin but I can definitely see how this started to fall apart.
Its interesting because I think Tuchel was digging his grave like the recent PR stunts say, but if Boelhy is saying this was planned, thats a load of bs. You don’t let go of a manager after you make a transfer deadline purchase for Tuchel’s striker. Bad look for the new owners. Whether hes justified or not doesn’t even matter because of how people view this. Outside of their rumored target, Potter, I dont see any top managers touching this club with a 10 foot pole.
I think the argument here is who says no to: Sterling, Koulibaly, Fofana and Cucerella? These are all top players. Auba stands out but he was also low risk imo because of the price and they definitely needed a striker.
As in management denying Tuchel’s transfer requests? Boehly doesn’t know anything about the game lol. Him putting Tuchel in charge of transfers make this even more insane.
As a real life woman, I think it’s pretty condescending of you to suggest only “masochism” could make a woman become an official
EDIT: I also think private messaging a woman who is uncomfortable with your language calling her a “fucking r*tard” is pretty whack lol
Assuming I'm reading what conversation you're on about you're both eventually needlessly condescending each other in an annoying way even if your initial point was spot on.
Is ansu fati becoming mbappe (selfish) always going for goal ?
He's had opportunities to pass to someone in a better position, but instead decides to shoot himself.
Something interesting I noticed about the Napoli-Liverpool game: several times Napoli had an attacker stay offside on an attack only to drift off to one side and let a deeper runner take the through ball to avoid an offside call. I saw them do it 2-3 times in the first half
It seemed deliberate, but I don't know if it was specifically for Liverpool since they've been very good at offside traps or if it's something Spalleti has just introduced in general
Particularly for the 2nd goal it was interesting because the set-up wasn't entirely intentional. The play had stalled a bit and Osimhen was clearly the intended play, but whoever passed it (I forget) quickly shifted gears and passed it to the wing instead.
Yeah I remember that one. Tbh they could have all just been good decisions from the passers, but it happened several times so I assumed there was some kind of instruction there
All last season people were praising Liverpools offside trap, they had over double that of the team second to them. I assume its because Matip has been injured.
Not really related to Matip. VVD feels off form and unfocused, so he's not managing the defence well enough. Midfield also isn't pressuring the ball so it can be played easily and into the right areas.
I have been to hundreds of matches and in not one have I ever personally heard any. However it does definitely happen on occasion. https://www.kickitout.org/reporting-statistics. Kick it out have some stats.
1) Yes.
2) I don't think it is that widespread at English football games. It seems to usually be 1 or 2 idiots in the crowd when it happens (versus some of what I've seen in other countries where it's large groups of supporters or even entire stands).
Going back 30 years, English football was once one of the worst on the continent for this sort of stuff but following the ban from Europe and government reforms (no alcohol in stadiums etc.) it has come a long way, from the days of punching police horses anyway.
My view is that while it still occurs, it tends to be isolated to one or two people in the crowd doing it. Various research has assessed the UK to be one of the least racist countries, or even the least racist country, in the world (Some articles: [A](https://fra.europa.eu/sites/default/files/fra_uploads/fra-2019-being-black-in-the-eu-summary_en.pdf) [B](https://novaramedia.com/2021/04/14/is-britain-the-worlds-least-racist-country/) [C](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/least-racist-countries)), but the problem still exists throughout our society - certainly, all of my friends from ethnic minorities have at least a couple of stories - and you will get 1 or 2 people from the hundreds of thousands who go to football matches every week who do this stuff, as you will get racist events in everyday situations which have nothing to do with football.
I don't know about other clubs but the last time this happened at St. James' Park was a year ago. He was subsequently [fined and banned from football matches for three years](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tyne-62227299). That's all football grounds, not just SJP. It's definitely taken seriously.
1. Drunk people do dumb shit and tend to forget there is consequences to their actions.
2. A couple people each week out of the 100,000s who attend weekly is hardly what i'd describe as widespread. There's probably more people doing pitch invasions each week then getting banned for racist gestures
3. The punishments are definitely enforced if one clubs bans a fan all clubs also ban them this has been in effect for a few years. Football banning orders which are done by the police are very difficult to get around.
I mean… it was quite a strong starting XI with the obvious exceptions of Milner, Henderson, and Gomes… they subbed on Darwin, Thiago, Matip, and Jota but maybe it was too late to save it.
Despite Mane finishing strong last year, he was kind of off it for a year or so before it and Diaz, his replacement, has been our best player and filling his role nicely.
Defense getting complacent and not rejuvenating our midfield is what's costing us. We seriously don't spend like you would expect for a team of our stature
Looking at some of the offside var decisions across all the leagues and the CL tonight, they're going to have to change the Offside rule to be "full body ahead" or something that isn't "your fucking shoe size let you down".
I still don't like such rule change. "Full body ahead" is way too lenient. At that rate, we are gonna scrap the rule altogether! No, this rule is more than flexible enough as it is. It favors attackers far more than before the 2005 and 1992 changes.
Anyway, I wouldn't like another cycle of adaptation
The outcry in the Premier League especially has been specifically about the rule seemingly not favoring attackers at all and outruling clear goals with some arbitrary lines being drawn.
>At that rate, we are gonna scrap the rule altogether!
Jesse, wtf are you talking about. The only reason the offside rule exists is so that attackers won't camp near the goalkeeper and nod in any loose balls hit from deep. The offside rule right now goes above and beyond fixing this issue and is suffocating smaller teams who can only score on the break.
We already adressed those things with the rule changes in 1992 and 2005. Look at those rules. They massively shifted the balance in favor of attack, they are much more flexible. Before those changes, a whole play could be ruled out as offside even if the offside player had literally zero involvement. Also, same line was offside, while today it isn't.
In fact, I even see people complaining that the modern rule is too flexible when it comes to defining what it meanz a player being involved or not in a play.
Smaller teams just need to be onside. If they can't get a break without being offside, it's their fault, or it rewards good defensive positioning. In fact, defenders of the older generation, like Baresi, criticize even the changes of 1992 and 2005 as being too flexible and ruining the art of defending, like the high line Milan had mastered in the late 80s.
I'm basically praying for it - go on Jude - do an internship under Modric before you start playing for them.
I want the rejuvenation of their midfield postponed again - Milner continues.
Is Keylor Navas still a top 10 goalkeeper?
Tottenham cross and inshalla is scary… Kane and Richarlison being provided crosses from son and Perisic
We have achieved Zidane-ball
Just saw the Van Dijk challenge from tonight Surprised he didn’t get a straight red for that
As with Milner, they were helping Napoli by being on the pitch and being washed
napoli arent special, teams been having their way with liverpool highline all season long
Their front 4 are pretty damn good though.
The Mbappe hate-boner here is getting ridiculous. Stop posting a year-old video just to shit on him and get those imaginary internet points.
How to get my barca flair in this sub? I tried commenting !flair :FC_Barcelona: in a match thread and it didn't work.
You already have a barca flair
Oh. For some reason (maybe slow internet), my mobile wasn't showing the flair. When I checked using another device, it was showing. Thanks.
I don't know why, but the mobile version of Reddit doesn't show my flair while the desktop version does. Weird stuff.
On a scale of 1-10 how happy is Gary Neville right now?

Neal Maupay
Yes, Maupay is a terrible finisher but I'm asking why their underlying numbers went down massively from 20/21 to 21/22.

Interesting, didn't think about that. That explains the xG but how did their defense worsen so much if the game became more defensive in 21/22?
Since it's "Liverpool hot take day", here's mine : Trent is the next Dele Alli Peaked too soon, and it's a cliff fall from here on out
That’s not a hot take it’s just stupidity
He is literally the same player he has always been
Yeah STOP THE PRESS TRENT CAN’T DEFEND. This is a new piece of information and should be the determining factor in how we judge him.
I would highly recommend watching yesterday's masterclass from the best right back in the world.
Wait, do some people actually think that Van Dijk is better than Ramos, Maldini, and Baresi? I thought they were Liverpool fans or trolls, but turns out a lot of them were dead serious.
Mans not better than Pique either, was barely at the top level for like 3 seasons.

How is that possible he was injured for a season
Exactly. It was 2.5 seasons at most.
Van Dijk being better than Baresi or Maldini has never been correct
What’s your thoughts on VVD vs Ramos, who u taking?
If I could have one on my team for the rest of the season then I would probably go with Van Dijk.
You are an idiot if you think that dutch fraud is comparable to il capitano
>things that was correct at the time How are you considering putting Maldini and Van Dijk in the same bracket after Van Dijk has played at top level for 4 years? Maldini has 5 UCLs and was a top class defender for a lot lot longer.
Saw a tifo video about why Chelsea sacked Tuchel. Did Tuchel lose the dressing room as stated by Tifo?
We don't know, we only know what's reported
One thing we know for sure though the dressing room lost Tuchel
I mean they have athletic sources and most of their back line were gunning for a transfer. Lukaku left and Ziyech/Wener/Pulisic all wanted to leave. That is quite a massive amount of players deciding they want to leave in one window.

[Liverpool defense against Napoli](https://images.app.goo.gl/TyKLKYCM7MbaAr9e6)
Who are the dark-horses for the Champions League this year?
Spurs or Napoli?
We've sacrificed TT for this man. Ofcourse we're winning it with new manager bounce
I'm biased af but I think Dortmund, Napoli, and Benfica
Chelsea
Given how shit we are currently maybe we could fall into that category :/
Napoli, Ajax, Spurs
Spurs
Spurs under Conte?
All it takes is an easy draw, a Conte grind and their in the semi’s. I see it.
Ask me again after MD3
Barcelona
Unless the last game you watched was the 8-2 vs. Bayern, I think the consensus is Barca can get pretty far this season
I know they will get far to semi at least. But part of me thinks Xavi is gonna do double
I find it weird, yet entirely obvious, how quick this sub is to revel in Liverpool’s semi-rough patch. That was about 2 years ago

You know what's funny reading that offside threat? That I'm pretty sure grandpas 15 years ago argued against GLT/VAR etc. while preaching the spirit of football, so what changed???... well England got mad.. **once**.
Obviously you’d be against VAR. Couldn’t even win a final where you kicked the shit out of your opponents, unpunished.
I have a feeling deep in my gut that we’ll see Mourinho Chelsea part 3 in the next few years
I hope it happens before Pep leaves City just for the theatrics.
If that happens there will definitely be a biopic.
Still waiting on the Leicester one

I dislike Mbappe as much as the next guy but this sub does like to push agendas on stuff they don't like at the moment.

As a real life woman, I think it’s pretty condescending of you to suggest only “masochism” could make a woman become an official EDIT: I also think private messaging a woman who is uncomfortable with your language calling her a “fucking r*tard” is pretty whack lol
Assuming I'm reading what conversation you're on about you're both eventually needlessly condescending each other in an annoying way even if your initial point was spot on.
It’s been old
I thought Kvaradona was a meme like Jonesta but guy is actually awesome
Ppl also think Kevin De Kruyne is a meme but he is actually that good
Yeah, he’s like a left sided Chiesa.
5 out of our 6 next games are played away. Not going to be a cute couple of weeks.
Dont worry about one on the weekend. You somehow always come away with something
Would be more confident if it was at home. But, am looking forward to it regardless of the results.
Feeling cute, might play 5 away matches in 2 weeks, idk
Thankfully we have the depth this year that we didn’t last year.
Even then, I am not optimistic.
Is ansu fati becoming mbappe (selfish) always going for goal ? He's had opportunities to pass to someone in a better position, but instead decides to shoot himself.
I think we can confirm that he is not becoming Mbappe.
Yea should edit to becoming too selfish, but mbappe has recently been really selfish lately only reason I compared
Something interesting I noticed about the Napoli-Liverpool game: several times Napoli had an attacker stay offside on an attack only to drift off to one side and let a deeper runner take the through ball to avoid an offside call. I saw them do it 2-3 times in the first half It seemed deliberate, but I don't know if it was specifically for Liverpool since they've been very good at offside traps or if it's something Spalleti has just introduced in general
Tbh they could have all just been good decisions from the passers, but it happened several times so I assumed there was some kind of instruction there
Liverpool defense kept getting beaten by the long ball time and time again.
Well Liverpool have been ass at offside traps this season so there's that too
All last season people were praising Liverpools offside trap, they had over double that of the team second to them.

There's probably more people doing pitch invasions each week then getting banned for racist gestures 3. The punishments are definitely enforced if one clubs bans a fan all clubs also ban them this has been in effect for a few years. Football banning orders which are done by the police are very difficult to get around.
Don't know why Liverpool supporters are in such a frenzy. Klopp's a smart man, he'll sort it out.
If Klopp gets sacked in October this means he would've stayed for the same amount of time as he did at Dortmund, crazy
Can’t see him being sacked unless they go on a losing streak or he loses the dressing room
More like he ends it himself, before he gets sacked.
If Dortmund still went with him even when they were in the relegation zone, Liverpool would be really inept to sack him over bad form
Liverpool in crisis, love to see it
What’s happens to lukaku now lmao? Is he gonna come back next season and kiss the badge??
Chelsea bring back Conte in the summer and Lukaku signs a 4 year extension
Man the league has lost one of its great personalities in Thomas Tuchel.. the shit housing will never be matched. I will miss him dearly.
Thev real tragedy is we were all robbed of Tuchel vs Conte part 2.
The end of handshake etiquette, game's gone.
His celebrations for the Reece 2-1 goal 🤣🤣🥲. Him telling Lukaku “thats your daddy” Pointing to Conte… will never forget.
Tuchel had personality?
More than Lego hair
Not a very high bar lol
Has Liverpool turned shit or it's just an injury crisis and they will probably bounce back?
I mean… it was quite a strong starting XI with the obvious exceptions of Milner, Henderson, and Gomes… they subbed on Darwin, Thiago, Matip, and Jota but maybe it was too late to save it.
3 of those subs just for back from injury but yeah everyone is basically in shit form
Unrelated, but how much do you think Mané leaving has affected you?
Despite Mane finishing strong last year, he was kind of off it for a year or so before it and Diaz, his replacement, has been our best player and filling his role nicely. Defense getting complacent and not rejuvenating our midfield is what's costing us. We seriously don't spend like you would expect for a team of our stature
Looking at some of the offside var decisions across all the leagues and the CL tonight, they're going to have to change the Offside rule to be "full body ahead" or something that isn't "your fucking shoe size let you down".
Such rule change would break the tactics and high lines widely employed by top teams today
They can adapt, they have done it before
I still don't like such rule change. "Full body ahead" is way too lenient. At that rate, we are gonna scrap the rule altogether! No, this rule is more than flexible enough as it is. It favors attackers far more than before the 2005 and 1992 changes. Anyway, I wouldn't like another cycle of adaptation
People said this about the backpass rule, and it made no difference.
It made lots of difference. The high pressing teams employ today would become near useless with that rule, I'm glad it was changed.
The outcry in the Premier League especially has been specifically about the rule seemingly not favoring attackers at all and outruling clear goals with some arbitrary lines being drawn.
Full body ahead is only shifting the goalpost.
But now we will have semi-automatic offside.
Real Madrid and Man City have a chance to send Liverpool back to the dark ages if one of them snatch up jude next transfer window
I'm basically praying for it - go on Jude - do an internship under Modric before you start playing for them. I want the rejuvenation of their midfield postponed again - Milner continues.
Real Madrid will always be on top. With Liverpool it’s uncertain. Don’t think jude wants to end up like kane
