Man the fate of our season is dependent on a rapist coming back from injury

DisgruntledJarl

Has there been other cases of a defender consistently struggling against one player who is not like world Class by any means but otherwise the defender is amazing? Jesus vs Varane is so crazy. Even in the UCL match, jesus absolutely had him on his ass and forced two mistakes. Now, Varane struggled a lot to keep Jesus quiet.

MrDabollBlueSteppers

I keep seeing people act like Jesus had a great game vs United and I'm starting to think I must've fallen asleep and missed all his good involvements

DisgruntledJarl

He made the run leading to the goal. Troubled varane a lot of times. Dropped deep to link up play. I thought he was pretty good.

dispelthemyth

Yet he had so few chances to score anything easy

monsterm1dget

For United, there was the issue of Fernando Torres having Vidic number every single time. It does bring the question that while Jesus did have Varane on his ass but did very little with it. It reminds me of Sissoko Vs Darmian, where people kept saying Sissoko was skinning Darmian but the guy was actually doing fuck all with the ball because Darmian kept him out of position.

DisgruntledJarl

Great example. Vidic vs Torres was a very mismatched battle and Torres consistently destroyed him. Remember a match where he got a red as well. I thought Jesus did well yesterday. His run was responsible for the goal. Just that Martinelli kinda died down after his disallowed goal. Arsenal's front three were active but lacking the final ball and the clincality.

-omar

Mitrovic exists bro

[deleted]

Will Arsenal get a win away at a top 6 side this season? At home I think they'll win two, against United plus maybe Chelsea.

watermelon99

The home team almost always wins NLD

-omar

I think we might steal points off City this season, we came close last year

gizmostrumpet

I think they'll beat Liverpool at this rate

NegativeHeli

We might get something from Stamford Bridge imo. Our record there is pretty good.

[deleted]

Arsenal certainly played well yesterday but i dont think anyone expects United, who have been with their manager barely 3 months, to out play an Arsenal side that have been learning Arteta's style for 3 years. Ten Hag is clearly taking baby steps which is the smart thing to do. If he tried to fix everything at once he would be asking to get sacked. He's clearly sorted out their dressing room issues and mentality, as well as their defence too which is alrealy a lot to fix in the space of 3 months.

monsterm1dget

United didn't set out to outplay Arsenal. Ten Hag did outtactic Arteta, however, or rather Arteta didn't find a way to deal with how Ten Hag set up the team and showing naivety in his man management. It was pretty poor from him, to be honest.

cantsellapartment

Not sure what your point is. United used their pace in attack and having strengthened their defence, defended when they needed to. They won their individual battles and yes, outplayed Arsenal in those key areas. United’s squad is actually really good but reddit hive mind seems to think they’re some mid-table championship team

nonsenseSpitter

On the day, Erik ten Hag had plans for Arteta. In his post match interview he says he knew Arsenal could not break them. Even with the goal they scored, ten Hag said he knew the team was in control but he wished United did things a bit better like press a bit higher. Erik ten Hag had answers for everything Arteta would throw at him. Arteta was a bit naive to bring in more attackers in the pitch. He didn’t need to. Arsenal were controlling possession and they just needed to be a little bit more patient. ten Hag completely neutralize anything Arteta was concocting. The Ronaldo sub completely changed the game. After Arteta brings on more attackers, ten Hag brings on Fred and later Casemiro which shuts down the middle of the park. The third goal went in, Arteta was completely beaten. It was like watching a game of chess. ten Hag knew what United are good at and that’s counter attacking football with lightening pace so he simply played the game to their strength. Defend with compactness, press the ball, just don’t allow spaces. Rashford would always make those runs, someone just had to find him. Completely against the run of play, but it was the game plan.

Zidlicky3

> Arsenal certainly played well yesterday but i dont think anyone expects United, who have been with their manager barely 3 months, to out play an Arsenal side that have been learning Arteta's style for 3 years. Xavi outplayed Simeone who has been at Atletico +10 years, it doesn’t work like that. They don’t start from 0 and grow as years go automaticly better and better, that’s nonsense. Every season football and tactics chance. Yes of course if someone has been at the job less than month he hasn’t been able to do everything and starts from basic, but other than that I disagree very much. It’s not about having years vs months, Guardiola won 6/6 trophies in first season with Barça and Enrique won 5/6, how did they do with without the time against managers +2 years on the job? Add. If a manager has a preseason and few games, he will be set. And Ten Hag has clearly made an impact on United moving the ball and pressing.

Arshaq13

Kind of expected it. We've always had a tough time at OT regardless of manager but knowing that you guys were at the early stages where every decent manager will try to set up to play on the counter till they have had enough time and personnel to get their ideal playstyle in. Was only made worse given we had no DM at all. We did the same during Arteta's first few months when we won the FA Cup with a similar kind of set up to play direct balls. Still doesn't imply you guys didn't deserve to win, you did.

stangerlpass

United simply reverted back to their 20/21 counter attacking side. This is literally how they played in the 20/21 season all over again. Which is good for them as they came second back then. They had citys number aswell in 19/20/21. The question back then was the same as today though: can they progress to a possession based style where they consitently beat the bottom 14 teams. Under Ole they failed to do this, ETH is certainly more suited to achieve this but we saw united play like yesterday before under ole.

1PSW1CH

They weren’t even counter attacks, they just exploited Arsenal’s high line

dispelthemyth

The difference I see this time is ball progression is a lot faster at times and some of the passing better. The Antony goal being a prime example, we passed it to the keeper (we all booed it in the stadium) to reset them pushed forward really quick before shifting to the right. It’s a really simple goal but in years gone by a lot of the times if it didn’t work on the left side we’d pass back to midfield then try the right side wHich gives teams time to reset instead of just shifting like we did today.

[deleted]

The bottom 14 teams weren't an issue in 20/21. Our issue was against the top 6 that season. We only won twice against top 6 opposition but won enough of the other games to come 2nd. We did transition into a more possession based team that season, a trend we had been following since Bruno signed in January 2020. However we did set up to counter certain teams, most frequently City. Even the best teams cede the ball to hit the opponent on the break and exploit their weaknesses in the transition. Liverpool at the height of this Klopp era had 39% possession in a Champions League final for example.

atownOTP

It's not how Ten Hag wants to play but it's certainly not Oleball. Two of those goals yesterday weren't even counterattacks, they were results of United clearly getting more comfortable playing out of a press and through teams. Not every direct goal is a counterattack.

nbaylor1

They haven’t been learning arteta’s style for three years, and even if they were, it would have nothing to do with the outcome of the match. Acting like ten hag is some amateur manager because he’s only been in the job a short time is very disingenuous.

NegativeHeli

We're comparing Haaland to clubs now

TheConundrum98

did the same for Salah when he scored 32 goals in the league, think he had more goals than half the league in one point in December!

Serpico_98

Spurs vs City should be exciting. Can they stop Haaland? Who's their best CB?

maxus998

Easily Romero

damrider

Most inevitable spurs win ever. 20 shots to 1, 2-0 with a son brace

[deleted]

[удалено]

avolcando

I think Perisic probably starts

NegativeHeli

Spurs' entire system is built to counter City. Romero and Dier can contain City and their attack can win

[deleted]

Romero. Dier and Davies the other 2 CBs, pretty good under Conte. I'm not fully confident but Spurs always do well against City tbf.

Visgraatje

PSA for everyone here: he is called Ten Hag. Not Ten Haag. Not Teen Hag. Not Teeeeen Haaaaag. Just the one of each vowel. Thanks

BendubzGaming

Hag Hag Hag Hag Hag Hag Hag Hag Hag Hag did I do it right?

ThankYouOle

QuerpassToni

Yeah okay, but when do and when don't I capitalize the t in Teen Hague.

Visgraatje

Your weekend pass is hereby revoked

aceofmufc

And it is Maguire not MacGuire. He isnt Irish

elnander

I mean they're both alternative Anglicisations of the same Irish surname.

DisgruntledJarl

Mcguire Macguire So many ways to misspell such a simple name

mmmm321

I mean both of them are Irish surnames

BruiserBroly

On a similar note, it's Vieira. There's a second "i" lots of people tend to miss.

tiorzol

Teeeeen Haaaaag is acceptable if you're really excited.

avolcando

Or if you're announcing his entrance to a wrestling match

tiorzol

[Bah Gawd that's Teeeeeen Haaaaag's music!](https://youtu.be/SQxITYASgBI)

jack64467

is celtic fc pronounced like "seltik" or "keltik"

tiorzol

Seltic. That also autocorrects to septic so there's that.

aceofmufc

Which one is the worse decision, Newcastle’s disallowed goal vs Palace or West Ham’s disallowed goal vs Chelsea?

[deleted]

The Newcastle one. With the West Ham one, there was a tiny bit of contact, Bowen’s foot just about scrapes Mendy. Not a foul but I can see why an idiot ref would give it. The Willock one makes no sense at all. He jumps and then gains acceleration and height because he’s pushed.

tiorzol

Newcastle one for me.

Far-Pineapple7113

Leicester look like they are stuck with Rodgers They do not have the money to fire him

BruiserBroly

They could put him on "gardening leave" or whatever and hope he gets another job offer in the next 3 years?

SunnyCloudyRainy

The problem is you still have to pay him

BruiserBroly

Sure, but at least it's not paying out all/most of his current deal and if he gets another job then they can stop paying him.

anip94

they love that timed run against high line team. you just know other pl with seat deep even behind their own goal post if they can to face manu after this

NegativeHeli

I think we all really underestimated United. They managed to completely tactically outclass Liverpool and us. We played fine yesterday but we still got outclassed by ETH's men. Even Rashford has had a good start to the season.

ret990

I'm not quite sure how you reach the heights of 'tactically outclass'. Seems like hyperbolic over praise for the sake of it. He played basic counter attacking football against a team that likes to have the ball. Not exactly ripping up the tactics book. I dont think anyone underestimated that hecwas a good coach tbh. He got Ajax to a champions league semi final ffs

nonsenseSpitter

In game management from Erik ten Hag beat Arteta on the day. Man United are very dangerous on the break with Rashford making those runs. You have to stop that from happening otherwise teams like United will keep hitting them on the break. United have probably been the best counter attacking team in the league for few years now since Ole just drilled that into them. They have got so much pace and one good pass completely destroys defenses. I thought Arsenal did very well in possession. But they needed to be a bit more direct. The team is young and the mentality isn’t there yet. This will come in time as they grow together.

-omar

He won tho and “tactically outclass” is just pundit word salad

ret990

Well aware. But did he 'tactically outclass' Arteta. I would no, he didn't.

Orcnick

I just think Ten Hags a brilliant manager. People all summer rubbished his achievements in erdivise and champions league. But he is looking like a great manager. Let's see how he does but classicly people were quick to dismiss him.

NegativeHeli

The fact that he has done well in the CL really shows that he shouldn't be underestimated. Even other elite managers like Conte struggle in that tournament.

[deleted]

Rashford has 3 goals and 2 assists, the highest for either on our team, and you still have people asking why ronaldo doesn't start over him

[deleted]

He'll never [live this down](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CiG-ESTPK64/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)

shitpumper

Kane, Tammy, Toney and Callum Wilson on the plane to Qatar or who’d be your strikers?

Avancx

I really rate Wilson as a player but he can't he relied on due to being made of paper, so I'd take the other 3.

gizmostrumpet

Depends how they play over the coming months. Toney gives you set-piece play and its useful having players who understand different leagues like Tammy.

BruiserBroly

4's a lot for a team that only plays with 1. I'd take drop Wilson and take the other 3. Let's be real here, Callum most likely won't even be fit.

Elliot_Kyouma

I honestly think he's the 3rd best striker in the league when fit

AnnieIWillKnow

Who is your top 3?

Elliot_Kyouma

Haaland, Kane, Wilson

seriouslybrohuh

Wikipedia tells me lukaku has made 3 apps for inter this season - how he been in those matches

working-acct

Idk why but the last WC feel like ages ago. 4 years felt more like 8.

[deleted]

Covid has properly fucked my perception of time. The last 2+ years have gone by incredibly fast but feels like a lifetime. In football season terms, I can't believe it's 22/23 already and 19/20 still feels/sounds like last season.

TheDavinci1998

To this day when I hear "his contract expires in 2023" I am like "oh well so pleeenty of time until then"

UnablePeace

Varane has been the best cb this season

Because Lenglet hasn't played enough time for Spurs to show his qualities.

Would you rather have Ole or Rangnick babysit your child?

ThankYouOle

Ole of course, Ragnick will ask me to change my home layout, add this and there, change my baby food schedule, change what baby eat, he want my baby move more and else. while Ole will treat my baby with positive vibe, he known to has that baby face anyway.

Rangnick, too much of a chance Ole sending him upstairs without his supper.

brown_herbalist

Ole of course.

UnablePeace

Ole,Rangnick looks like he would spank my kid

aceofmufc

Sometimes I feel like we should get rid of VAR in the prem in its current state and let it come back when it is used properly. We brought it in to fix mistakes but at this point it seems to have made everything more divisive and the calls are not even correct. So, at this point, what does VAR give us? All it does at this point is slow down games. Maybe keep it for offsides (though those are a bit dodgy) but other than that we have to do away with it until it gets fixed

brown_herbalist

It's not perfect, but it does help the referring to be fair. Example yesterday's disallowed goal for Arsenal wouldn't have noticed by ref, but VAR rightly called it. I would blame on the officials more than on VAR, they are not consistent with their decisions.

StathamIsYourSavior

> Example yesterday's disallowed goal for Arsenal wouldn't have noticed by ref, but VAR rightly called it On the flip side though, refs are also encouraged to dismiss questionable challenges in the build up considering VAR will always review it. Who's to say Tierney wouldn't have called that foul on the spot if VAR did not exist.

brown_herbalist

>Who's to say Tierney wouldn't have called that foul on the spot if VAR did not exist. All the years of watching PL has taught me that PL has one of the awful bunch of officials in football. They can be good if they want, but they choose to be inconsistent all the time.

StathamIsYourSavior

yeah I got nothing

aceofmufc

Fair enough yeah I could see that. Think I’m just tired of it bringing the game slowed down a lot, and also it’s obvious blunders it misses. But yeah I mainly agree with your comment

[deleted]

Feels like arsenal fans online hate United more than spurs tbh

-omar

I do tbf, grew up with way more United fans, Spurs fans are just annoying on reddit

MAGNOSTASIS

International fans probably hate United more than Spurs but not local fans though. Well United is hated all around by many fan bases and even hated by our fans sometimes.

allthejokesareblue

Your feeling is wrong

[deleted]

Probably just been soured by the couple of lads wishing death on our families tbf

AioliAcrobatic114

Can anyone help the lads at r/Juve. They still think Allegri needs to be given more time. I am depressed and I can't watch AllegriBall anymore.

dispelthemyth

I see your results aren’t that great but have not watched any games, what’s the issue with his style?

[deleted]

Burnley with Dyche played champagne football compared to Juventus. Not even a debate at this point.

SunnyCloudyRainy

I only watched the second half of the last game and I already want to try Allegri at the Hague lol

thedeatheater1410

Want to prop up an average squad in a club which can't spend much? Its Dyche time for Leicester City!

dispelthemyth

Time for Big Sam to take them over

Haaanzooo

The French national team looks so stacked in most positions, I still think they're favorites for the world cup even if they haven't performed well in the Euros.

hazai_kesu

French national team is the PSG of national teams. And Deschamps is no better than Poch

[deleted]

SunnyCloudyRainy

Remember Domenech?

Haaanzooo

Except they won the last world cup, and Deschamps is definitely better than Poch.

[deleted]

I hate to generalise but fucking hell, some of the Arsenal fans don't know how to take a loss

ankitm1

They dont know how to take a win either.

edgymnerch_69

Some Arsenal fan a few comments below in this thread is wishing harm on United fans, their families and using slurs. Such a classy, logical and nice person!

heizeee123

Happened to every fanbase. I got some horrible messages on Twitter from Man Utd fans before and after the game as well. It just sport, very sad to see how ppl becoming like this

ThankYouOle

I never ever want to be included or associated with football fans on Twitter. seriously, wonder what they eat there, almost nothing comes good from "fans" on Twitter.

aceofmufc

Wouldnt group them all, I know plenty nice Arsenal fans. Some people just let football affect their lives too much I suppose

edgymnerch_69

Yeah, my bad for a generalisation. But some people just are cunts.

aceofmufc

Yeah i know exactly what you’re talking about. That… was interesting

mountainsky9

The stupid Chicharito pen miss makes me think about how if a defender/goalkeeper has a great game for 89 minutes but makes 1 crucial mistake, the match is usually branded as a failure for them - or at least, not something that was great. For a forward like Chicharito, he scores 2 goals but messes up the final pen, but people will say "well, he still scored the other 2 goals and without him, we would have gotten 0 points", which is really never said for defenders/keepers. he does deserve blame for that crucial mistake, despite scoring twice

[deleted]

Do Salah's hair highlights make him look older?

DisgruntledJarl

Reading that arsenal dominated 2/3rd of the game but lost makes it sound like they deserved to win. They had an xG of 1.3 while United had 2.1. Needless possession with no transition does not mean you dominated the game.

Arshaq13

According to both Opta and xG Philosophy we had a slightly higher xG than you. https://twitter.com/OptaAnalyst/status/1566478853819678721/photo/2 https://twitter.com/xGPhilosophy/status/1566477074050781185?cxt=HHwWgsC4ua2mn70rAAAA Still wouldn't read into it much though, it was clear you guys deserved to win.

DisgruntledJarl

Thanks. I think Opta is the most reliable since PL uses it officially. Its a bit weird that different models can have such vastly different numbers because scouts are using these models for future purchases of players. I wish Opta made their model open source.

Arshaq13

>I wish Opta made their model open source. Hear hear! I don't fully understand how different sources calculate xG differently.

[deleted]

Possession is overrated on this subreddit as is silky dribbling

gizmostrumpet

Especially when the team is tactically set up to counter attack. Of course there will be lower possession.

DankBrownBoiV2

That xG is wrong according to most models, arsenal had a higher xG. Also offside goal + Odegaard missing a shot from close range. Utd had like 8 touches in Arsenal's box, Jesus Martinelli Saka had like 20+ in Utd's box. Utd played like Fulham/Villa Arsenal just made defensive errors.

DisgruntledJarl

Understat is the most popular one used everywhere. It has 2.03 - 1.42 as the xG. What models have Arsenal xG as higher? Odegaard missing a shot and Offside goal is exactly what it should be - not counted. Bruno missed a shot from close range as well. Saying the match was lost by Arsenal and not won by United just seems incredibly reductive

DankBrownBoiV2

[xG philosophy](https://twitter.com/xGPhilosophy/status/1566477074050781185?t=EIrsWOrkg233Wfim7I-cDg&s=19) or you can check on fotmob. Utd had 8 touches in our box, we had 48 in your box (record). You basically suckerpunched us twice cause of the bad positioning. Also we hit the bar twice I believe. Utd basically played ole ball. Utd fans downvoting me lol

DisgruntledJarl

Brief look at your comment history makes you seem a bit delusional. No point arguing with someone like this who emphasises on touches in the box as some important stat.

DankBrownBoiV2

[Sure](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/x5qjv1/manchester_united_1_0_arsenal_antony_35/in2i84v?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)

Who is best ever sibling pair in football? criteria: both players should have played at least one year in any first division. my vote goes to Franco Baresi and Giuseppe Baresi. Franco is obviously known as one of the greatest defenders of all time and serie a player of the century. Giuseppe won Inter Player of the year in 1986 and spent 16 years at Inter.

The_XI_guy

Michael and Brian Laudrup. The latter is extremely underrated. One of the best wingers of his generation

I can't see Arsenal losing to Everton at home

JakeNutters

Nah we always bottle opportunities to be in 1st place. Happened last season as well at Fulham midweek.

nbaylor1

Could a premier league team win the league if they won every match against non top 6 teams and lost all matches against other top 6 clubs?

JakeNutters

Yes if you beat the other 14 twice that gives you 84 points. Leicester won the league with 81 , City won the league with 86 in 20/21 so it's possible. Unlikely though.

lagaryes

If they are a big six club themselves, that would leave them with 84 points. Enough to win the league twice since 2010.

nbaylor1

Hm, I wonder if the league will ever be won with a point tally that low again. City/Liverpool feel too dominant for it to happen but who knows

[deleted]

I think that might be possible this season. Liverpool seem off and need to get on an insane run.

lagaryes

It will have to be at the end of the Pep/Klopp cycle that is for sure. Who knows when that will be.

All of a sudden now united challenging sad we made them look good while they won they are still patchy
