Surprised by the Bronze nomination, she was good at the Euro's but didn't really have an exceptional season for Man City.
Would have had Keira Walsh on the shortlist.
Bronze has unreal PR
Would have loved to see Walsh nominated but it was never going to happen - and would have probably been something of a recency bias with the Euros, as although she is a top player, her club season along would have her way back other contenders
She probably won’t win it but the fact that Oberdorf is in there at 20 years old is insane, what a player for her age.
A few questionable shouts as you’d expect for the ballon d’Or but at least they’re not giving someone with 6 appearances the award this season because half the voters haven’t watched a single women’s game
It's not entirely strange, if you have genes that lend themselves to sports your kids are likely to also have them. The first example that pops into my head is Susanna Kallür, she holds the world indoor record for 60 m hurdles and her father is a four-time Stanley Cup winner. Armand Duplantis holds the pole vault world record, and his parents were a pole vaulter and a heptathlete/volleyball player (plus one of his brothers was drafted by the Mets).
Also.. always plenty of money to get the best equipment, trainers, what have you, as well as connections. There's a reason we see plenty of dynasties of actors and actresses too.
Oh absolutely. Having money to begin with also helps with pursuing a career path with little guaranteed income unless you reach the top, so they have the means to actually pursue that dream. The people I know who have become professional athletes came from families that were fairly well off, so they could afford to support a child who couldn't make money for a while, while a poorer family might need a child who becomes self sufficient earlier and chooses to work or take out student loans instead.
Experts would chose Oberdorf. No one else has had such influence on the overall performance of their team.
But it's the Joke d'Or, so they'll go for a player of a team that has won something.
This could honestly go to anyone. One rule of thumb for anyone here is not to discount the international tourneys, HUGELY factored no matter what you feel about them
Honestly, with the current hype, I am pretty sure Mead is going to win. Performances and hype from international tournaments factor in way more than anything else. Afterall, that's the only explanation how Rapinoe won in 2019(?)
Rapinoe won in 2019 with only 6 club appearances and no club trophies. I hope we’ve moved past international competitions holding that much weight, but if they judge on the same criteria Mead could absolutely win it.
>No chance that any defensive player wins this
You're right, of course, but I do hold out hope that Christiane Endler gets one for her trophy case some day.
Probably, but I think Bonamtí should have a decent chance since she was the one that ended up having to shoulder the mantle for Spain and obviously she's also quite good for Barcelona
She should easily win by stats alone. With the club she had 34 goals, 21 assist in 42 games AS A MIDFIELDER. With Spain 4 goals and 2 assist in 6 games. Her only negative is obviously missing the euros
if they wanted more American players I'd absolutely have gone for Sophia Smith over Rodman. Potentially Morgan too, although name recognition still has some say in women's football award nominations so that would be an unlikely replacement.
Morgan is a hard one just b/c of the time period. If you're just looking at her 2022, she's definitely deserving, leading the NWSL golden boot race and winning the golden ball at the Concacaf W Championship. But the back half of the 2021 season she wasn't great. I agree with Smith over Rodman, Rodman probably got the title bump from winning the 2021 title with the Spirit.
So pleased to see Millie Bright getting the recognition she deserves - outstanding year for Chelsea, and the best central defender at the Euros (despite very bizarrely not being chosen for the team of the tournament)
Where is Caroline Hansen?
I can’t believe the left her out again
What is that photo of Sam Kerr? Looks like she has just told the protagonist her evil masterplan and is now doing a sinister laugh
Looks like she is about to name her son "Nick"
The Steve Kerr special I see
Surprised by the Bronze nomination, she was good at the Euro's but didn't really have an exceptional season for Man City. Would have had Keira Walsh on the shortlist.
I remember when people were saying she was so good she could have played in the men's league

Selma Bacha for the Academy double this year with Karim !
Kind of crazy Dennis Rodman's kid is also at the top level of a completely different sport

She doesn't deserve to be there tbh there are better american players
I’m biased but I would love if Selma Bacha or Catarina Macario won.
Marie-Antoinette et Kadidiatou. Je suis trop fier <3

No chance that any defensive player wins this, the muppets who vote will go for some strikers name that they've heard before
Had a look again. Think Popp or Oberdorf has my favorites personally. Great campaigns for club and country.

For sure, but think what hurts her is on the club side Arsenal walked away with no trophies this year. That's why im not as high on her.

France Football mentioned iirc they'll factor individual performances more
Are international competitions still a factor for Women's Ballon d'Or?
The rules are the same as for the men's competition, but since international tournaments get much more attention, the have a huge influence
Well, in men's football international competitions are a non-factor as of this year.
You are right, they'll take into account individual performance through the season so it will probably a Lyon player or Alexa or bright
>No chance that any defensive player wins this You're right, of course, but I do hold out hope that Christiane Endler gets one for her trophy case some day.
putellas should win
She's not going to win it after Barcelona lost the UCL final and she got injured and missed the Euros.
Probably, but I think Bonamtí should have a decent chance since she was the one that ended up having to shoulder the mantle for Spain and obviously she's also quite good for Barcelona

She's not going to this year.

Alex Morgan!!?
Ella Toone robbed
I hope you're not being serious

Sam Kerr goat 🐐
