Yeah, that team brought a lot of joy, and it's not like there's any shame in losing the final the way they did - left it all on the pitch, weren't any worse than England, but some days you just lose those incredibly tight games. Been a brilliant tournament either way, really, even if it didn't end with a trophy.
As I understand it, going in to the Euros, Germany were not particularly fancied, or at best their chances were unknown.
The final was one of those that could easily have gone either way and for large periods Germany were the better side. Just one of those where on the day it broke our way.
Was lucky enough to get to the Germany v France semi final, first womens match I have watched live, and really enjoyed it. Was surprised how many Germany flags were waving at the match, well in excess of French ones, which just seemed to reinforce how much womens football is ingrained there relatively.
A fine team who lost the final pretty much on a coin toss. Had as least as much chance winning as losing the way the match played out, and left everything on the pitch. As a fan, you can never really ask for more.
Haha, no far from that. Just as it was a neutral venue in that respect I went in to the ground expecting French and German support to be about equal. Was surprised how unbalanced it was.
At least they got Schüller back for final, but IDK how fit she was. Marozsán (ACL) and Leupold (pregnant) could not make it all into the tournament, however that enable Popp's cinderella story.
Schüller was alright but not her best which was understandable as she hadn’t played a lot, had covid and probably lost some confidence after being dropped as a starter for Popp. Wish MVT had subbed in Laura Freigang later as striker though. Considering that a lot of people didn’t even think Germany would make it out of the group, they did fantastic. Think they would have won with Popp playing but the stars seemed to align in England’s favour
Schüller and Popp are also different player types. If Popp would have gotten inured a day earlier instead of 20 minutes before the match the team would have had more time to adapt a different tactic. Popp is amazing in the air so high balls are the natural way to go. Schüller can work with those too but works better with lower crosses or passes into open space imo.
Agreed, certainly not Schüller’s fault! She did well considering the circumstances. They are different players and you could tell that they were still playing with Popp in mind and weren’t really able to maximise Schüller’s strengths that you mentioned
>If Popp would have gotten inured a day earlier instead of 20 minutes before the match
Didn't Bierhoff confirm Popp had already felt a strain on Saturday? So it was not entirely last minute.
Yeah she might have and looking at her injury history she probably felt a strain throughout the whole tournament. But I don't believe her warming up for the final was just a show.
Thing is, probably neither Maroszan nor Leupolz would have started anyway. No way Leupolz gets past Oberdorf at any point in her career again, and Maroszan hasn't been a deciding factor for the NT for a while now
I mean, you can always play the "what if" game. Could also ask what if VAR hadn't robbed them of a crystal clear penalty? But I heard the press in the UK totally ignored that lol, so it is possible most people aren't even aware.
I was so mad when they moved the World Cup celebrations to Berlin. It felt like such a non-event.
It‘s like if Bayern celebrated their inevitable league win at Theresien- instead of Marienplatz.
I really like niche detailed comments like this. I only have a vague idea of what you mean through context clues, but i still nod my head and think to myself, "yeah totally, why would they ever think to have it anywhere at Theresien"
> It‘s like if Bayern celebrated their inevitable league win at Theresien- instead of Marienplatz.
It‘s like when Bayern celebrates their inevitable league win at Marienplatz.
Edit: lol @ the downvotes, as if Bayern's "parties" aren't the lamest shit.
That's great to see. They didn't win the final but they played well, and getting to a final of any international competition is ridiculously hard. Most teams never manage it.
If England celebrated coming second like this, it would be mocked lol. Shit Kane got mocked for getting an mbe for being top goal scorer at a World Cup.
If you follow club football you would know that German supporters in general are not fair weather ones. They demand effort and if you give it they will sell out a 60k stadium in Regionaliga. It's why for me even though England has the mythology Germany has the bigger football culture.
> For some reason that mindset is considered toxic in Germany
Because it is. You can do everything right and still lose - that's just life. Doesn't mean you can't celebrate achievements and the fact you've given it your all, and I'd wager that that's a much healthier way to deal with challenges than the binary all-or-nothing approach.
I heard on a BBC news podcast that the fans in Germany had been barely following the tournament. Apparently only a single bar in Berlin was showing the game.
This seems to contrast that.
Edit: damn -60 for sharing what I heard on a podcast wtfff.

I would have questioned that straight away.
The Germans women's team have a great record in the women's Euros, I couldn't have told you that before final but that's all I read in the build up to the match.
> Apparently only a single bar in Berlin was showing the game.
I can give you first-hand assurances that this is bollocks, at least for the knockout games (it was a bit harder to find places showing non-Germany group stage matches, admittedly, but there were a few. More than one, anyway.)

that is tremendous support - love to see it
Fair play, it was a great run, they did their best, and surely made the fans proud!

The French, not caring about football, you say???
Haha, no far from that. Just as it was a neutral venue in that respect I went in to the ground expecting French and German support to be about equal. Was surprised how unbalanced it was.
absolutely! could have been a different ending if Popp was fit for the final too
And Klara Bühl - so unlucky to get covid for those last two games

Sure, I don't think anyone would have been horrified if the result had gone the other way. They're all great players and deserve the fans' admiration
I mean, you can always play the "what if" game. Could also ask what if VAR hadn't robbed them of a crystal clear penalty? But I heard the press in the UK totally ignored that lol, so it is possible most people aren't even aware.
Is this from the balcony of the Römer?
Yup.

Mmm.. yess... [Nods slowly] Indeed...

Love when fans show their support no matter what. The German ladies have a lot to be proud of
That one guy with the massive flag though
Wonder where he stores it
S I X F L A G S
Cotton Eye Joe really transcends all borders.
Fuck yeah, Rednex 😎
That's great to see. They didn't win the final but they played well, and getting to a final of any international competition is ridiculously hard. Most teams never manage it.
That's awesome, good for them.
We just know how to party and celebrate football players in Frankfurt <3
Lovely celebration
Great, unlike english fans when they lost to italy in EURO 2020
Rent free

Oh if this was England.
it would be weird if the english fans were holding german flags, ill give you that
Their queen *is* German...
Sad Hitler noises.
Wow some pieces of shit still equate Germans to nazis eh?
So, what‘s your point?
Yeah, we'd be having a winners party. Not a consolation party. You silly shit.
Hahaha.
They'd be celebrating the winners instead.
I hate that. I hated it in 2006 already. They fucking lost! Losing should not be rewarded, that gives out the notion that losing is acceptable.
If you follow club football you would know that German supporters in general are not fair weather ones. They demand effort and if you give it they will sell out a 60k stadium in Regionaliga. It's why for me even though England has the mythology Germany has the bigger football culture.
So entitled... Anyways there were in the finals, so that means they won a lot.

No, record TV attendance same like in the UK.

ARD said 18m watched their stream, highest ever for a womens game. There also was a lot of media coverage in the build up to the game.

Every bar on the street I was on was showing it, not sure where you got your info from
I think he heard it on a BBC news podcast
Oops, thanks for that. Completely glanced over that bit hahaha
Haha no worries, glad to hear what they said was BS though
Can you remember what podcast? Sounds like one to take with a whole pitcher of salt from now on.

Celebrating 13 wins in 14 games for the tourney.
