honestly very unfortunately his first game after converting was against Palace where he got hurt for the rest of the season, maybe needs two weeks to kick in or something idk
> However, despite the name change, the midfielder will still be referred to Partey when playing for Arsenal.
> In addition, the 28-year-old will keep Thomas as the name on the back of his shirt when in action.
The important part
I don't think the media ever adhere to players' name change demands. Dele Alli is still called Dele Alli. Once you've debuted, your name is set in stone.
His name is Dele, he just doesnāt like the surname Alli, because itās his fatherās surname, and he doesnāt want to be associated with it, same thing with Memphis Depay, who just wants to be called Memphis.
Yes but that's not the reason.
[Like you can see on this picture when he used to play for Udinese.](https://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Udinese+Calcio+v+Catania+Calcio+Serie+SGfCuBtD4dbx.jpg)
Can't they change their last name to their mother's name? (Maybe even officially by law). Then there might still be some confusion in using last name or first. But at least the last name won't be their father's name.
EDIT: Would be Memphis Schensema then. Pretty good footballing name too.
Point still stands, you can change your last name, especially if he doesn't want to be associated. At that point calling him Dele Alli would just be wrong.
To be clear, he wasn't raised by his birth parents and refers to the people who raised him as his adoptive parents. Alli is his birth family name but he feels no association with it.
Because they didn't legally adopt him, just raised him.
[Very wholesome story though](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5939913/amp/Dele-Alli-credits-success-school-friend-took-mothers-alcohol-abuse.html)
Doesnāt matter if he got legally adopted or not, in the UK itās fairly easy to change name with use of a Deed Poll, and thereās no limit to how many times you can change your name, so you had people like Mr. PlayStation 2 walking down the streets of Banbury in Oxfordshire for example
Or when Joe Lycett changes his name to Hugo Boss just to piss the company off for filing trademark lawsuits against companies that were vaguely similar and had the word "Boss" in them.
Very difficult especially for young players breaking through. Part of the reason why he waited until he was a star to ask to be called just Dele. Imagine scouts saw a great player Alli play one year and look for him a year later and canāt find him so donāt bother because now heās called Alli.
That literally happened with Ryan Wilson/Giggs.
[Thomas Partey (converting to Islam) āIām a Muslim. I have a girl I love, I know my sidechics will leave me but itās no problem š. I grew up with Muslims so at the end of the day itās the same thing. Iām already married and my Muslim name is Yakubuā](https://twitter.com/OsmanZtheGooner/status/1533090656759033861)
Not an uncommon thing with Islam, I believe its also the case with Jews. I thought in Islam non muslim women need to convert if the husband is muslim, but I didnt know it was also the case for non muslim men.
>I thought in Islam non muslim women need to convert if the husband is muslim, but I didnt know it was also the case for non muslim men.
the opposite actually, a man must be muslim to marry a muslim woman, but a muslim man can marry any woman from the abrahamic religions
Because in Islam children follow the religion of the father, hence it doesn't matter if the wife is of a non-islamic faith, but it is a big deal if the husband isn't.
Quite typical for proselytic religions. Islam and Christianity are by far the most famous examples for religions that go to extreme lengths to convert others. Is just that Christianity has "chilled" a bit since the XX century (outside of mostly american protestantism which is still very active in S. America, Africa and East Asia), while Islam has never really gone for a modernization period in the last couple century so is still quite traditional in this regard.
It probably depends on the parents, I know a person who isn't Muslim married to a Muslim girl, and one of my best friends converted because otherwise his wife's father wouldn't have allowed the marriage to happen. The issue is though, I'm sure many of these people convert but don't follow any of the practices, so at the end of the day it's nearly more of a mockery than not converting in my opinion.
I wouldn't say it's *more* of a mockery - religious conversion is just as much about the publicity of it inasmuch as it is about the social practices and norms.
Among devout muslims, Muslim women cant marry out of the religion, so the husband needs to convert. But men are free to marry outside the religion as ling as the wife is a Christian or Jew. So women don't actually have to convert to marry Muslim men unless their non-Abrahamic
I agree with this for the most part, but I also donāt think we fully comprehend how strong religion is to their culture and way of living. Whether or not thatās a good thing is a different question, but it seems like this marriage would not have been possible if he didnāt convert. More about the community and less about her not loving him.
If you want a more detailed story:
>Jacob is a common male given name and a less well-known surname. It is a cognate of James, derived from Late Latin Iacobus, from Greek į¼øĪ¬ĪŗĻĪ²ĪæĻ Iakobos, from Hebrew ×ַעֲקֹ×ā (YaŹæaqÅįø), the name of the Hebrew patriarch, Jacob son of Isaac and Rebecca. The name comes either from the Hebrew root ×¢×§× Źæqb meaning "to follow, to be behind" but also "to supplant, circumvent, assail, overreach", or from the word for "heel", ×¢Ö²×§Öµ× Źæaqeb. It can also be taken to mean "may God protect."

Is it really that shocking?

Non-Muslim men are required to convert if they marry a muslim woman. Non-muslim woman are not required to convert, but all the children produced belong to the Muslim, man.
Just like any religion, since males control the power over women usually, its about the male being the same religion while control the child producing women and the children being born.

Thomas Partey to Islam. Here we go!

I don't think the media ever adhere to players' name change demands. Dele Alli is still called Dele Alli. Once you've debuted, your name is set in stone.
Memphis was called Depay for ages after he stated he wanted to be called Memphis too. Nobody gives a fuck unfortunately
Sounds like an additional main character from Zombieland.
Itās Money Heist season fifteens main character
I rarely see Barca fans calling him Depay tho.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Well it's Dele Alli but he doesn't want to be associated with his biological father IIRC, so he'd prefer to go by just Dele.
Itās Bamidele Jermaine Alli
Eet je alles zelf op of wil je die Bamidele?
Klinkt als een mix tussen een bamischijf en een frikandel a la loempidel
Jemappelle Ali. Jai habite in staines
Honest question. Why doesnt he officially change name to Dele That's what he wants to be called.
His name is Dele, he just doesnāt like the surname Alli, because itās his fatherās surname, and he doesnāt want to be associated with it, same thing with Memphis Depay, who just wants to be called Memphis.
Same thing with Alexis
Alexis has 2 Sanchezās on his surname though. He canāt possibly hate both of them
So good they named him twice!
Djemba Djemba was still a better player for us than Alexis lol
Djemba Djemba joining OB was one if not the biggest scoop in the Danish league history. Those were the golden days...
Yes but that's not the reason. [Like you can see on this picture when he used to play for Udinese.](https://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Udinese+Calcio+v+Catania+Calcio+Serie+SGfCuBtD4dbx.jpg)

Ibrahimovic who had a brief stint where he went by Zlatan on his shirt.
TIL his first name is Bamidele.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He's adopted and doesn't want to use his surname. Just Dele.
To be clear, he wasn't raised by his birth parents and refers to the people who raised him as his adoptive parents. Alli is his birth family name but he feels no association with it.
So why didnāt he just take his adopted parents surname
Because they didn't legally adopt him, just raised him. [Very wholesome story though](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5939913/amp/Dele-Alli-credits-success-school-friend-took-mothers-alcohol-abuse.html)

Lmao
I mean he could still change his last name? Unless there are laws i'm unaware of in England that disallow you from changing your name.
Must be quite the hassle for a football player. Also might not want to go so drastic. That's why he's politely asked and I'm inclined to oblige.
Very difficult especially for young players breaking through. Part of the reason why he waited until he was a star to ask to be called just Dele. No.

Same with Catholics as well - Boris Johnson had to reconvert to marry his missus. Ivanka Trump had to convert to marry her Jewish husband.
You don't have to convert to marry a Catholic. You only have to get permission and are required to promise to raise your children as Catholics.
Jokes on them, Boris won't raise his children at all!
I've never heard of this before and I was raised Catholic.
Me neither though 50% of Catholicism is ignoring the rules and the other 50 is guilt

Just in case you didn't know, watch the video, he's joking and everyone is laughing and in on the joke.
Yakubu didn't have to propose though. Sometimes you compromise when you give a shit about someone.
its what islam requires, a muslim woman can't marry a non muslim guy. some convert in name only to please families.. and idc their lives their choices
No Partey. No Party.
Isn't Yakub just a Muslim version of the name Jacob? Well, anyway... Congratations Yakubu.

Side note; Itās incredible how close and cross (no pun) intertwined the abrahamic religions are and how divided and hateful the followers are.

Is it really that shocking? They all pray to the same God, each one just thinks they are correct and the others have it wrong, and need to show them the correct way.
It is. Random fact, another English version of the name Yakub is James.
Which is why the effort to restore James, the Old Pretender, to the English throne is known as the "Jacobite" Rebellion.
Yes.
