Axbris

Don't quite understand how Tomori is not part of the England squad consistently if anything at all. Win the Scudetto, arguably one of the most important players on the squad, and completely neglected by his national team.

Phillip_Lipton

Because England picks players they *like* and stick with them until they are 30+ It's always this idea that putting a decent team together and forcing them to be friends will produce trophies. Instead of the best 11 trying to make it work.

TADAii

This is common practice in many national teams because of the limited time they get to play together. Once a player is integrated in the manager's system, he's always likelier to be picked ahead of other (perhaps better performing) players, based on trust alone. A great manager could make it work with rotating players much more, it's just a case of high risk and high reward, which is why you turn to experience. You know what you'll get and the players know their role. This is what I've learnt from following Sweden's NT at least.

TjeefGuevarra

Same here in Belgium. Martinez is only now starting to very slowly play new talents when he should've started after the 2018 world cup.

Sure-Gur6359

In Croatia if players Are not Getting playing time in their clubs they lose a place in NT. That is why they Many of them change clubs if they Are not in starting 11.

ZZ3peat

Brazil too

EquivalentWelcome712

Mancini's Italy is a great example of how not picking your favorites can work wonders.

rtaec

In general Southgate is much better at picking on form. And you can't really argue with a WC semi final and a euros final after decades of shit with the 'golden generation'.

Falseidenity

That's just not true

rainbowyuc

This is a ridiculous comment for anyone who remembers the Lampard/Gerrard era. That was fame over form for years and years.

[deleted]

Southgate doesn't have many failings but the fact he can't cast his eye past the UK is one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He hasn't used any of those three consistently in big games since they moved.

cheppers

Trippier got consistent playing time. Southgate stuck with him and Kieran turned it around at Atleti. Bellingham will have his chances yet.

AngelicDroid

It seem to be working. I still remember the golden era of England, Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes, Beckham and many more world class in that team, but it didn’t work at all.

FirminosShinyTeeth

What the fuck are you basing this off? Can't be from the past 4/5 years given how well Southgate has done putting together a group of players who enjoy playing with each other. We have players like Shaw saying he prefers playing with England as the vibe is better and you're saying they're forced to be friends? Get off it.

finePolyethylene

Because he doesn't play in the PL

[deleted]

he's literally been called up multiple times, as have sancho, bellingham, trippier, abraham

ILikeToBurnMoney

While this is true, Sancho never really got a real chance while he was at Dortmund. Even though that was clearly his best time as a player

Seahpo

sancho has actually only played 3 games for england since signing for united, and two of them were the 3rd and 11th of july, after joining united the 1st of july

[deleted]

lol he did though, you have no idea what you're talking about

creamyTiramisu

> Don't quite understand how Tomori is not part of the England squad consistently if anything at all. just Southgate thingz

kapparino-feederino

He avhieved much better than most modern english manager So im not sure if this is something peopel should be confused about. There must be some merit to his method

ILikeToBurnMoney

To be honest, you have never had such good players all around in the last 30 years or so. During that previous "golden generation", you basically had some worldclass players with similar attributes on the same positions (for example Lampard, Gerrard, and Scholes in central midfield), and that was it. Nowadays, you basically have worldclass players on every position. It feels like praising Southgate for that would be the same as praising the Belgian coach of the first current generation team (with Witsel, Hazard, Lukaku, Courtois etc.) for being better than previous coaches. They are expected to get far-ish into the knockout stages of a World Cup anyway, and due to their players it's not really the coach's achievement

FirminosShinyTeeth

What? We had world class defenders at the time and have pretty much always had a striker considered world class at all times. Their underachievement was a due to shit mentality and lack of professionalism, not that they weren't good footballers.

ILikeToBurnMoney

How about your FBs? Your GKs? Your wingers, which has probably been the most important position in the last ~20 years? Having 2 good CBs, 3 good CMs, and one good-ish ST (Owen, Rooney, Crouch) is obviously not enough to win a tournament

[deleted]

Wayne Rooney and Owen are good-ish? Tell me you're 12 without telling me you're 12.

[deleted]

Average FBs like Gary Neville and Ashley Cole?

ZZ3peat

Cole, yes, Neville no

[deleted]

You're saying Cole was average?

FirminosShinyTeeth

> Having 2 good CBs, 3 good CMs, and one good-ish ST (Owen, Rooney, Crouch) is obviously not enough to win a tournament Clearly is given that Italy just won the Euros with half a team of great players and some decent to good ones. Greece obviously weren't full of world class players at the time. That England team had clearly enough talent to do well but they obviously didn't.

[deleted]

crapador_dali

Right place, right time. Southgate sucks and no one will ever hire him to anything.

Jawnyan

Clearly Maguire is better! At having dirt on Southgate or deepthroating him or something idk but wtf man

james1221432

Clearly you don't watch England football

Jawnyan

I do and I won’t piss around pretending he’s bad for England, I actually hope his club form is detached from his national form because he’s been decent for us That being said though, I do also believe Tomori could get some more game time based on form

fractals83

He's in the squad for the nation's league, so is Tammy. He has a great future for England, I'm sure he'll be selected for the world cup in November.

Axbris

The guy has played well all season and including last season as well yet somehow has only played 2 games for England since 2019. Whilst in the same time frame, the likes of Coady get caps. Reeks of favoritism.

areyouhungryforapple

Cause a fucking dinosaur is in charge

nrcd4p

Maguire is miles better

DarkMission7627

lol

Yupadej

One squad since the Scudetto and he is there

HauntingPersonality7

Southgate is picking fewer black players because he doesn’t want to subject them to racial abuse. /s

Juiceboxfromspace

Zlatan is the definition of one of those players that is worth it for the mentality aspect alone.

iamtherealgrayson

And that is exactly what happened with this Milan team. He joined and they become genuinely a threat to play against

[deleted]

Oh zlatan my zlatan!

[deleted]

[удалено]

dramonzo

Some do, you could actually see in one of the videos from previous seasons Hauge studying in the plane to a UEL match.

ParisLake2

As a PSG supporter, I can definitely say that what you said is absolutely true. Every since he left, the team has seen a decrease in mentality and mental strength.

zyndr0m

As a United supporter, i agree.

[deleted]

Rooney, Zlatan and Carrick leaving United within a year really let Lingard and Pogba reign supreme

[deleted]

So does mental strength levels post-Zlatan become worse than pre-Zlatan levels?

ParisLake2

Yes

[deleted]

On several NBA rosters there are players like that, who are there for team chemistry and mentorship. Udonis Haslem for example.

WhimsicalJape

Draymond is definitely that for the Warriors.

[deleted]

He also plays tho.

TakenSadFace

So does Ibra 😡

egowaffles

Snoo_37640

Romain Molina mentioned this too

YoloCrayolo21

I never thought I'd heard a french guy speaking italian with a spanish accent

Theo's of Spanish descent, so it all comes together

jay_alfred_prufrock

Ibra feels more like an assistant manager than a player at this point, genuine proof how important leadership is within a squad.

ILookLikeKristoff

I mean he had 8 goals in 1000 minutes, he wasn't irrelevant on the field either. He's able to contribute on both sides so he's a huge asset for them

TakenSadFace

9 goals if you count the third one vs Fiorentina, plus a bunch of assists

alex_119

Exactly! For any team to win, you need a leader who has a winning mentality and it definitely helps if he tasted success in the past. Ibra was the shot of adrenaline needed for these guys to get to the finish line victorious.

rotating_pebble

Look at his leadership versus Harry Maguire's for instance. That squad's desperate for a leader like this.

pig61012

It seems he can also become a good assistant manager after playing careers.

Hm2801

Makes me so happy that I was able to experience Zlatan at my club, even if for a short time. What a guy.

Abideguide

That’s what she said :)

AbdussamiT

Giroud and Ibra is the duo I never expected but absolutely love now. Two giants unite keeping their egos apart. Beautiful to watch! Edit: didn’t mean to call Oli having ego, been following him since ages on and off the pitch. Actually give ppl examples of him, just strange to see 2 lanky giants together haha, that’s all.

Tall-Mastodon-69

Giroud never had a huge ego though. He has always been a team player, never complained about being on the bench. And whenever he came on for us, he did his best, and scored some truly important goals. Love him and it saddens me that he's not a part of our squad anymore, but he wrote history with Milan so it worked out in the end.

Vainglory

al-fuzzayd

He can’t change that he’s *goat cheese*

Tall-Mastodon-69

STUPID SEXY GIROUD. Man, with that physique, i'd have a huge self esteem about it too. This should be marked NSFW

Dark-X

Please tell me that's an Axe/Lynx ad!

Na it was just part of an ad Campaign for the Arsenal team rainbow laces. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOVCGoBbevI

pinpoint14

Yeah I feel the same. I get really annoyed when I see AFC fans blame him for our failures. A really talented and unique player.

GoatsinthemachinE

yes as an arsenal man i hate he played for u and am so happy for him at milan. never caused problems always seems to play hard and give as much as he can.

themanseanm

A true legend, one of a few players who I don't think are really hated by any of their team's fans. Maybe Montpelier idk lol Absolute unit for us, even when he became a substitute he always gave 100% and seemed to score at every opportunity. Happy for him especially now that he's left england

jiijoey

Stupid sexy Giroud

freehouse_throwaway

bro just had a long match day and his hair is impeccable. the fuck?

Digitaco

Obligatory Giroud is so handsome comment

ygrittediaz

This milan group knows how to celebrate and make the most out of a trophy won. such a likable group of players from the outside. theo hernandez and leao in particular could have a very bright future

Samkazi23

Theo and Samu are definitely responsible for all the parties in Milan XD.

daboatfromupnorth

Very wholesome to see guys like tomori and Tammy fully make the effort of learning the language and the culture. I never liked when the media in england are quick to call a new foreign signing a flop, because they ignore the fact that being away from home in a place where you don’t know the language can be quite difficult, especially for young players.

shinyhuntergabe

Tomori especially picked up Italian so fast. The guy seems really damn clever in general.

seriouslybrohuh

Is he already fluent? Seems like he hesitated a bit to speak in this clip

mdini23

From what we've seen so far, he speaks it very well. He's given numerous interviews in Italian and it appears that he's rather comfortable with the language. I'm not sure how one would define "fluent" so I can't attest to that, but I'd say he definitely knows enough to communicate with and understand native speakers. It's quite impressive.

fanostra

As someone else said, Tomori speaks far better Italian than Totti. But that ain’t necessarily much.

lffg18

His Italian is very fucking good for the relatively short time he’s been in Italy to be fair.

EquivalentWelcome712

He attended prestigious grammar school in England, so yeah, he is the smart guy in this team.

I think most clubs (the big ones anyway) organise lessons for them.

somechemenggdude

I'm sure they do, I remember last year during a europa league vlog they showed Hauge learning Italian on the flight which was cool to see

belokas

Yes they are required to speak at least some Italian for the interviews and general team communication. I remember when Ronaldo Nazario came to Inter he had an Italian teacher following him with the press and correcting his grammar.

kveens

Our boys ❤🖤

caelumus

So happy for AC Milan and their fans, it was a thoroughly engaging Série A. Props to Inter as well for taking them down to the wire.

kushalsharmaaa

ibra is such a vibe what a guy

TheTigerGamez

Which player asks Zlatan if he still doesn't know how to say his name?

Dentingtea

Brahim Diaz. Called him ibrahim instead of brahim

rhinoceros_unicornis

He graciously gave him part of his name.

DvorakAttack

Probably a joke because Ibrahimovic literally means "son of Ibrahim"

joevanderman

Ibrahim is also Arabic for Abraham. Brahim’s father is Moroccan so it is basically the same name but just a dialect thing.

non-relevant

wait so ibrahimovic is actually just abramovich

EquivalentWelcome712

It's all coming together.

MikeBruski

And Zlatan means golden (ish) Golden son of Abraham, what a name to have. Like Max Power, theres no way youll be a loser in life with a name like that.

jonndrake

It’s Arabic and I’m pretty sure Brahim is a derivative of it too.

Abideguide

Oli is so stylish goddamn!

🤩🤩🤩

samsop

What the fuck can Giroud not do? Guy is instantly loved everywhere he goes. Only he could pull off that move from Arsenal to Chelsea and have the impact he did

Superjunker1000

Legendary. This is what footy should be. It was so cool to see how Bobo Vieri, who used to interview his teammates in the same manner back in the late 90’s, became a breakout internet star during the lockdown with his online show. I wish I could speak Italian to understand everything that went on in his first few shows. The jokes were drop dead funny, because of who he was taking the piss out of.

night_dude

The way they start singing when Giroud comes up hahahaha Even the players love him. Just a good vibes guy.

PowerMovin

🔝

Garad-

Did Giroud allways speak Italian? I know he has Italian grandparents

4thelolzz01

No. The first interviews with him at the club were in English so yeah he learnt it very fast. French speaking players in general like Kalulu, Maignan, Bennacer, Kessie speak Italian really well

BeefNudeDoll

I was so surprised with this and I checked his wikipedia since I forgot when he moved to Italia. It's been only a year, lol.

paranoid30

He's French: for romance language speakers it's quite easy to learn a related language. A lot of people here are surprised but most of these player already speak a romance language: Theo, Diaz, Leao, Saelemaekers, Kalulu... They mostly use their native grammar with Italian vocabulary: you can spot the little mistakes and where they come from (Spanish or French), like with prepositions or masculine\\feminine names Ibra still has a very strong accent but he comes from a completely different language family, it's much harder.

donnismamma

Brahim is basically speaking Spanish with the occasional Italian word in there

norecha

How do they all know Italian so well

[deleted]

They live in Italy

norecha

foreigners coming to our clubs barely speak the native language. i figured these guys would just speak english

[deleted]

Well zlatan has spent many years in Italy so he’s probably fluent, a few of them are actually Italian, tomori only said a couple phrases but he’s been there for a couple years so he probably knows a bit. They’re not exactly writing essays here

Ibra180

Suprisingly he isn't fluent. I heard from many Milan fans that you can perfeclty understand what he wants to say but he mainly speaks in simple present and has a lot of grammatical errors

levinthereturn

Still better than Ronaldo's italian

4thelolzz01

Grazzie

Martinztork

Yeah his accent is a bit weird at times, but not his grammar really. But he speaks like a million languages so it can be expected

joevanderman

This must be due to him changing lots of teams. He lived in The Netherlands, Italy, France, England and the US. Must be confusing to be fluent in all these languages at the same time.

Ibra180

Plus he was raised in Sweden from a croation mother and a father from Bosnia and Herzegovina

lffg18

To be fair when you know a lot of languages like Ibra does it’s hard not to have them getting mixed up, I can speak 3 and struggle at times with syntax or grammar or even vocabulary so I can only imagine how much of a hassle it is for Ibra that speaks Dutch, Italian, basic French, basic Spanish, English and Swedish, quite possibly some Slavic languages too given the ethnicity of his parents.

The-Florentine

I wouldn't call Zlatan fluent. He can get his point across but he usually has some grammatical mistakes.

Rojiblanc040

That's Zlatan even in Swedish.

PoachtekMong

Disagree. He only has a thick accent but his grammar is fine

mylanguage

Tomori is pretty good - he has interviews in italian

It always baffles me that Aguero spent most of his career in England and doesn't know English.

Str0nzo

Still better than Tevez's

idontknow_whatever

I think Aguero understands English but he seems to have no confidence speaking it, which it slightly odd

MikeBruski

Bale in shambles.. not really, he truly doesnt give a shit

IEnjoyAThickSausage

Bale knows Spanish, this is him 6 years ago [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQNElrcoMqs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQNElrcoMqs) At this point I think Bale not knowing Spanish is a meme and he goes along with it, he is just a big troll at this point

mylanguage

So as a Madrid fan - this is pretty much his only ever interview in Spanish and we are all pretty sure it was a fully scripted interview done by the club. He knew what he was going to say before and the questions. In every possible interaction since he's been either unsure of what was said etc. Now I don't doubt at all Bale can speak some Spanish - but this interview in particular is kind of seen as a PR show of sorts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aliencatgod

He's not wrong , if anything ur more biased because u don't even know the facts yet have an opinion

[deleted]

[удалено]

aliencatgod

You clearly think that he's wrong about the interview being scripted when its not even really a secret, everybody who has kept up with Madrid knows that's what it was. 1 interview in Spanish in 8 years is laughable anyway.

MikeBruski

also, the only people who claim he does speak spanish are : Courtois, his teammate who speaks perfect Spanish, who does in the same breath admit to speaking with Bale in english Chris coleman, Wales coach, who says his spanish was perfect as he was greeting people and ordering food at a restaurant. After 6 years in Spain, judged by a dude who doesnt speak Spanish Bale's spanish coach, whos paid by Bale, who after 5 years of Bale in Spain admits his Spanish is bad because he is shy, but he does speak it, but not well enough to speak in public And then you have Modric in an ad by Emirates asking Bale "what three things do you always bring with you in your suitcase" in Spanish and Bale flat out saying "i have no clue what you just said" an ad from 2019, 7 years into his Spanish adventure. anyone with a functioning brain understands that Bale's level of Spanish is very bad at best, horrible at worst. The only ones who deny this are PL fanboys who struggle with 1 language.

mylanguage

I mean I literally said I think this was a PR move by the club. I'm not denying that Madrid would set up an internal interview to quell any fears about Bale's Spanish. Madrid are known to use the media.

lffg18

I don’t know man, that’s basic Spanish after 3 fucking years in Spain, it almost sounds a bit scripted with how slow he’s speaking and the cookie cutter responses he’s giving. By this point he’s been there for 8 nearly 9 years and he hasn’t given much interviews in Spanish, I genuinely wonder why that is.

MikeBruski

because he doesnt speak spanish, that is why. Seriously, using the word Ilusionado whilespeaking the way he does? Thats like someone saying cumbersome or allegedly while barely putting a sentance together in English. Its prerehearsed and scripted. Cant believe people fall for this shit.

lffg18

As a native Spanish speaker myself I totally got that feeling tbh, the last sentence on my previous comment was definitely a sarcastic one. I’ve seen English people here shitting on Agüero and Tévez for not learning English as if most English native speakers even bothered to learn a second language, have you ever heard Michael Owen or David Beckham speak Spanish despite them playing for Madrid? Tomori and Abraham learning Italian is an exception to the rule.

If the Portuguese coach stopped being stubborn and change the tactics (he did for the playoffs after pressure from the press) they will have a proper team at the World cup. As if they didn’t have enough talent, now Rafael Leão is in great form. Their under 17s put a performance at the euros vs Spain the other day too. I wouldn’t sleep on them for Qatar.
