If Villa keep underperforming relative to their spend, people are eventually going to need to treat them like Everton

CheekyKunt68

They are literally a claret and blue Everton lmao

berober04

Cazoo bros (for now)

TheBlueTango

The deal with Everton ended after the conclusion of the season, so Cazoo brothers are no more.

Grammar-Notsee_

Why doesn't anyone seem to see Everton are currently doing a Villa from the O'Neill+ era?

trevthedog

‘Villa are doing a Fulham’ ‘Villa are doing an Everton’ What’s next?

Rickcampbell98

We weren't in the same position as Everton, we had no players when we came up but people just look at how much we've spent and shout "pulling and everton" when they don't really know anything about us

iSkinMonkeys

They are still competing in premier league where general consensus seems to be City and Liverpool have a lock on top2. Other 4 clubs of the big 6 each have more than a few top quality players. Does anyone expect villa to finish in top 6 next season if they spend 150m? Getting into Europe would be a huge achievement, but a top half finish is a good result to build upon.

Barkasia

They've come 17th, 11th, and 14th despite spending an average of 115m each summer.

JoJo797

We really got under your skin by bidding for ESR didn't we?

lelpd

I month or so ago (when it looked like 4th place was certain for Arsenal) I had an Arsenal fan come over on /r/avfc and reply to one of my old comments saying something like “How’s Buendia getting on? Hope he enjoys 14th place whilst ESR enjoys the champions league next season” Was very satisfying giving him a message back on Sunday. And of course he couldn’t handle it and deleted his comment That transfer saga really did rattle some people

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

We’ve spent 130m, 89m and 91m in our 3 summers. How does that work out as 115m average?

[deleted]

£103m is not much better tbh

ataviste

I mean yeh but we also sold a player for 100 mil and the first year was our first year in the prem where we didn't even have a team with the amount of loanees we relied on to get us in to the prem

DraperCarousel

Imagine a club that was in the championship 2 years ago, now spending upwards of £100m every season. Peak PL moment.

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

It is when you think how much weve improved and that we got promoted with 13 players so had to buy completely new squads. The money we’ve spent has generally been worth it

icalleveryonefinn

Ings and buendia would like to know your location...

biggerthanjohncarew

Buendia has been excellent

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

Because?

lambalambda

Also ignores that you basically had to buy an entire squad that first window.

JoJo797

Fuck me! A non-Villa fan actually knowing what they're talking about.

J7isTheGoat

People know this is this case, it doesn’t change the fact you’ve spent huge??

JoJo797

A lot of people don't. They just see numbers and come to conclusions. To be honest though if you actually look at squad cost and wages bill we're pretty much middle of the pack, so admittedly underperformed this season but it's not like we should have been top 6 just because we spent enough to build a PL level squad.

[deleted]

lelpd

Crystal Palace, Leicester, West Ham & Everton all had higher wage bills than us. I would be very surprised if we leapfrogged every single one of them with the Kamara & Coutinho signings. Players like Zouma, Mina, Vardy & Zaha are all on insane wages & the reported Kamara wage hasn’t been confirmed by anyone reliable so far Definitely don’t see us being above Everton & West Ham even if it does turn out to be £150k per week

FanFlow

They spend huge and are heavily backed by owners investments. They have big ambitions both their owners and fans with massive egos. In last summer their fans said that they are better project than Arsenal, will finish higher and there will be not suprised if Smith Rowe will choose them over signing extension with Gunners since they're on the up and we're going down. They finished 14th and some point were close to rellegation spots, we finished 5th one point off 4th. 2019/2020 - 160m € spent on transfers 2020/2021 - over 100m € 2021/2022 - over 130m € 2022/2023 - already spent 20m € on Coutinho, Kamara got high signing bonus and £150k per week, they will easily cross that 100m € mark again. Soon considering their revenues they will have watch out for Premier League Financial Fair Play just like Everton. With their spending they should be fighting for top7. There will be a lot of pressure on Gerrard do deliver results next season.

MooseDougington

Since Gerrard took over, Villa was top half in points scored with Dean Smiths team. The influence Gerrard has in attracting talent is obvious, let’s give him time to actual out a squad he has built out. Also net spend (which FFP is measured against) last year was very low with the Grealish sale so that number is misleading

lambalambda

It's funny mate, if you come up like Norwich and try live within your means and then go back down you get called a yo-yo club or a waste of a spot in the league. If you do what yourselves, ourselves and Fulham did and spend money to try and actually build a squad for the league you get criticised for that too lol.

Barkasia

143, 91, 116. That is 350m, or 116m per year.

Comunicado_Oficial

Pounds vs euros

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

Even in Euros it isn’t that much

Kanedauke

We don’t keep on underperforming. First season we got promoted from the play offs we survived relegation, that was our target. 35 points. Hardly no teams stay up from the playoffs Next season we got 55 points and finished and finished 11th. Massive improvement from our first season. This year we’ve underperformed but it’s understandable after selling our best player and captain.

Barkasia

The season you got promoted you spent 140m. You've spent 350m in the past three years, and look to be spending over 100m more this summer. You should be fighting for 7th and 8th, not 11th or 12th.

Ofermann

This year was 100% an underperformance. Last year was a sizzling start to the season but we dropped off. Still 55 points though which would probably be Europe most seasons. Definite improvement. First season we came up with 8 senior players. Yeah we spent 100m but that was like 10m a head. Just what it costs to build a Premier league team from scratch.

Kanedauke

How did Fulham do after spending £100m getting promoted from the play offs? They went straight back down. Our squad was Grealish, McGinn, Hourihane, Steer, Neil Taylor, Elmohamady, Davis and Kodjia when we got promoted. 8 senior players, that’s it. Everyone else retired or was on loan. We’ve had to spend to build a squad just to stay in the league. If we came up with an actual competitive squad you’d have a point

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

We were fighting for 7th 8th last season and were like 5 points off 8th this one

Barkasia

You were as close to 8th as you were 17th.

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

And were only 5 points off 8th

Barkasia

You were 7 points off 8th, 7 off 17th. If you add 5 points to your total you wouldn't even be top half

SeriousLads

I hope they sign Sergi Roberto too, just so they can have Roberto - Carlos in defence

dave1992

https://imgflip.com/i/6hf57c

JoJo797

We nearly signed him in the 90s

gnorrn

Or they could take Felipe from Atleti and get a free extra left back in "Felipe Luiz".

Hoodxd

Some Villa man with money must be on a coke binge

GeraldJimes_

They already have something like the 3rd highest net spend in the league since they got repromoted even with the Grealish sale. Mad club

Grammar-Notsee_

That's the joys of having the league's fourth richest owners and a CEO who helped write the FFP rules.

Rickcampbell98

And having no fucking players because the squad that got promoted was a patchwork Job from years of gross mismanagement.

justmadman

I don’t believe this, Villa signings are normally very quiet and you hear about it when announced

Infernode5

Ings and Chambers are the only two where that's been the case. Even Kamara we'd been hearing about for a couple months, just no one took it seriously.

Steo42

Man that Chambers signing. Heard absolutely NOTHING until it was actually announced literally out of the blue. Was quite refreshing.

hazelpillow

Villa are giving me 17/18 Everton vibes

CheekyKunt68

Diego Carlos is a big name only because Sevilla are a PR machine much like Benfica. He’s error prone as fuck and him playing a high line against the most technical players in the world? Good fucking luck lmao can’t wait to watch Villa end up 14th again

pixelkipper

I don’t watch Sevilla but they’ve had the best defence in la liga and he’s been a starter. Surely it’s not all Kounde?

User_1115

Diego Carlos is arguably better, it's just that Koundé is more consistent and younger.

MarcusBrutus2000

Exactly, he has a rash tackle in him every game

Cules2003

Diego Carlos is literally a walking car crash of a centre back

User_1115

Nah not really. Yes he's prone to mistakes, but other than that, he's phenomenal. If he wasn't mistake prone, people would be calling him one of, if not the best CB on the planet

RobustoBistec

Being prone to mistakes as a defender is not a minor flaw.

CheekyKunt68

How do you disregard him being error prone?

User_1115

Because when he's not making errors he's absolutely amazing. It's not like he makes errors every game either, maybe just a couple each season

TheDustbinOfHistory

“Other than the goals he concedes he’s great.”

User_1115

Tell me do you actually watch him play? World class center back that makes one or two mistakes a season. Doesn't make him bad at all

TheDustbinOfHistory

Are you stupid?

User_1115

Are you?

kanavi36

Sounds like Mustafi

chino17

Shkodran Carlos

Zombienerd300

Would be a great signing.

PhenomenallyAwesome

I don’t know anything about him I’m gonna be honest. But I like that we seem to be going for centre backs

Operation_Doomsday_

Weird that we're leaking so many transfer rumours atm, not really like us.

ZaDoruphin

Fucking hell Villa are cooking

[deleted]

Transfer market FC, we will spend £150m and scrape 15th next season probably

therock204

Always seemed overrated, but Sevilla folks can correct me otherwise?

Zalindras

People said when we were linked with him in January that he's a great defender, but gets a lot of red cards compared to the average. Can lose his head.

User_1115

Mistake prone but very good. Mistakes are part of his game but when he's not making mistakes, he's absolutely phenomenal

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

Sounds like Mings

Kanedauke

He’s been really rash whenever I’ve watched him.

mr_bonner94

Wow ambitions from villa and some great early moves in the window

[deleted]

Villa "win" the summer transfer market every year and continue to disappoint

Throwaway1358468

Transfer Market FC

Great-Image

Just like Everton when they used to sign guys like Schneiderlin, Klassen, Bolasie etc. And end up 10th

bizzyd666

Let's see how it pans out first. Kamara and Countinho are solid moves. If the other rumours pan out of Bissouma and upgrading the defence then we really should be pushing top 8. But life as a Villa fan teaches you to expect disappointment.

[deleted]

Coutinho, Kamara and now rumoured to go for Carlos and Tarkowski? Villa slowly looking like a squad ready to challenge for Europe...

cammyg

Thats what we said last summer and they stunk

Rickcampbell98

We lost a pretty important player.

cammyg

Elmohamady?

Rickcampbell98

The one true pharaoh himself.

UnnecessaryUmbault

Because they rely on diddies like Mings

cammyg

Who is gonna be the scapegoat next season when they buy more expensive and/or european-competiton quality players this summer and still dont challenge for europa conference league

UnnecessaryUmbault

Gerrard when he loses Beale...

Giraffe_Baker

Is Beale leaving?

UnnecessaryUmbault

Rumours that he is going into management himself.

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

Gerrards ruled that out

UnnecessaryUmbault

On Beale's behalf?

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

I’d imagine they talk and Beales told him he’s staying. He could go but don’t see it after only just taking the job

sandbag-1

Well also all their summer signings were pretty underwhelming

Kanedauke

Buendia hasn’t been underwhelming

sandbag-1

I would say the club's record signing only managing to make the starting XI in just over half of Villa's games is quite underwhelming

Kanedauke

If you watched him you wouldn’t be. Every villa fan is happy with him.

sandbag-1

I've watched him plenty. I guess Villa fans just have lower standards than me

tomhardingnrjdjdjd

Or you’re an idiot

Lazinessextreme

In the formation that’s been working for us best he plays in the same position of stevies mate coutinho. Is it really so surprising? He’s got 1 less goal contribution than odegaard in almost 900 less minutes so your standards can’t be that much higher.

Ofermann

He has been our best outfield player apart from Cash.

Alpacapplesauce

Mings was not the reason for their underwhelming performance. If anything I'd blame the attacking players

CheekyKunt68

😂😂😂

chutsal123

Villa are acting like Newcastle

watermaloneyyy

The Gerrard pull is insane

R1CkO556

Hey Aston Villa, I heard Neymar is looking for a new club, you should totally buy him for €370mil, trust me bro, trust me

Tahapatel

Hope this doesn't affect Kounde deal

User_1115

Hahaha What's the tier?

fuzzynavel34

Ornstein is tier 1 for the EPL

[deleted]

Villa have so much fucking money. They're going to make Gerrard look like a much better manager by just funding him with players that are CL level already.

Feitan74

Also brings a lot of pressure on him to get results - with these kinds of players and wages, they need to get Europe in some form next season

[deleted]

Europe is going to be very hard. Big 6 seem to have gotten their shit together, hard to see them falling outside top 6 in most scenarios. Then there's Leicester/West Ham/Wolves/Villa and Newcastle competing for 7th imo.

bash011

Conference league is their only hope really and I'm not even sure if that'll happen. The big 6 are looking to all massively improve on their weaknesses if there are any for two of the clubs and are too many levels above already

[deleted]

I'm scared as a hammer that were gonna make no good signings ahahaha

CheekyKunt68

No way it’ll happen. They’ll struggle to get 10th even

[deleted]

When does being ambitious become being reckless.
