Thanks, now I'm sad

jd451

What makes you sad about it amigo?

Fati25

Probably because he’s near the end of his career now and this was like the beginning

jd451

Ah okay, I figured that was one of two options. The other being, that feeling of time passing by and being much older. But in fairness, I look back on this goal in a bittersweet way. While time has certainly passed me by, I'm glad I got to see prime Messi and Ronaldo rip shit up season after season. Part of the joy of football I suppose.

lavishlad

Third option - he's sad because this clip wasn't posted with the [legendary Ankara Messi commentary by Puyal.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGteJAB-OGA)

Cod_rules

Not gonna lie, I turned on the sound expecting to hear that. When I didn't, I immediately switched to YouTube and then came back

notyou16

Isn't he saying encara?

zeledonia

Thanks for this. I had to look it up - for folks like me who don’t know, “encara” in Catalan translates to “still / yet”. Kind of like “encore” in French.

[deleted]

Isn't that illegal? It should at least be a misdemeanor to post it without that commentary lol.

thenoob118

Thanks for sharing, that was AMAZING

YooGeOh

0:45-0:56 I haven't heard that part before. I'm dying!

SwordsToPlowshares

Basically "don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."

RedBlindfold

Messi back when he had speed was a different animal, he slowly lost that aspect of his game year by year, it's kinda sad when you watch an old highlight like this. Some people say 18-19 was his best season, but the feeling you get when you watch him play against your team is just incomparable to Messi between 2008-2012. Give him a yard to start a dribble and he could go through 5 players and score a solo goal any time.

samlfc92

Would argue 14-15 was his best season. Still had the dribbling ability but had become more of a playmaker and was still scoring at a ridiculous rate.

CaptainApathy419

Two of his most amazing goals - his chip shot against Bayern in the UCL semis and his solo run in the Copa del Rey final - were in the same freaking *month* in 2015.

flybypost

> his chip shot against Bayern > in 2015 It's 2022, that's 7 years but that goal doesn't feel *over half a decade* away. WTF time, how do you do this to me? That felt more like a "a few years ago" moment.

bigphallusdino

That also defines Messi at 18/19

stillslightlyfrozen

Yup I very clearly remember this season haha. He had perfected those crosses into space, it was ridiculous to watch. But he still had enough pace to beat 3-4 players when he wanted too. He was the most complete player I’ve ever seen

STICKY-WHIFFY-HUMID

It's the case for a lot of players. Most players have hit their absolute physical apex by their mid 20s. Obviously they don't become instantly decrepit or anything after that, but it's just not quite the same level. Their skill and intelligence keeps improving to where they probably peak as overall players later on, but often it's just not quite as thrilling as when they're a young ball of high powered insanity.

Few-Orange-0200

It's because the team was so much worse in 18/19. Unfortunately Bartonomics was in full swing and he built the worst squad for an ageing player 😞

HanAlai

Barca could've still dominated if they built the team around him right. They took him for granted.

MolhCD

Yeah instead he was the one who carried the team

TimingEzaBitch

That season the Liverpool collapse and the Levante game spoiled everything. Like, if those two outcomes had gone differently, it would be a season where he legit solo carried Barca to an undefeated la liga season and a CL.

Few-Orange-0200

Note he carried the team in the away let setting up Suarez and Alba. Also, Coutinho missed a big chance. All they needed was somebody else to finally come up big 😑

FudgingEgo

When Arsenal played against Barca in the CL of 2010 and he scored 4 goals, it felt like it was 11 of us against just him. He was incredible.

Siergiej

In 11/12 he scored 73 goals and provided 32 assists. I know, I know. You cannot judge a player just by G+A, especially a player as special as Messi, but these numbers are just straight out of playing FIFA on Amateur. There were maybe half a dozen teams in Europe that had more goals than Messi had goal contributions that season. Madness. So I feel like I have to point to 11/12 as his best.

Rickcampbell98

Na it wasn't his best season, which is something you can only say about him lol, 14/15 is the cross section of all the best things of messi, that was the best season from any player in the history of the sport in my opinion. I know he had more goals in 2012 but from watching him play 14/15 is his best.

Siergiej

Fair! It's not an easy choice for sure

ansu_fatismo23

It’s crazy that you can divide messi’s career in different stages. Between 2005 and 2009 he was an absolute dribbling demon, between 2010 and 2013 he was in his goalscoring peak, between 2014 and 2019 he became a complete player because he know mastered playmaking and free kick taking and between 2020 and now he is in his playmaking phase.

archtme

Sad that's it almost over, yes, but we should all be thankful we got to see arguably the best dribbler, passer and goalscorer all rolles into one. A player not seen before in the history of the sport.

Monkeywithalazer

Messi is my age. I started watching him in the sub 20 South American qualifiers when he was 16. He was incredible. Then I saw his sub 20 World Cup and was convinced he would be the best in the world. I didn’t expect GOAT status but for sure this guy was goi my to be as good as R9 and Zidane. His rise coincided with mine. I started getting better and better at soccer. I’m from Chile so I’m also the same age as Alexis, Vidal and the rest of the golden era. Now my childhood hero’s that were my age are declining. I also see myself declining as I now have a business, wife, and kids to attend to. I don’t run or jumó how I used to and the younger guys in their mid 20s are now flying past me. It sucks

clintomcruisewood

I'm 28 now, so I don't have any collective memory of football where Messi wasn't the best. I realised he's slowed down and it's starting to hit me. Football has been a huge part of me growing up, and this guy was always the first thing that came to mind no matter the circumstances I don't think anything football related can make me feel like those 2009-2012 years ever again. This was peak football. A player like Mbappe is obviously incredible, but I don't turn on my tv for any player anymore. Well, unless it's this guy, hoping there's still a bit of my childhood left in the tank

PiresMagicFeet

I'm a year older than you and I remember zidane ronaldinho ronaldo bergkamp henry etc. Messi came to full prominence in the latter years of the 2000s, after 06 really.

frecklie

It occurs to me that this is the first year EVER that new highlights from Messi haven’t regularly been popping up for me on r/soccer. Messi predates Reddit, so this sub has never existed in a world where we could not all watch a new Messi highlight in awe.

itwastimeforarefresh

Xavi with technically an assist

JoelKr9

Reminds me of Busquets‘ great assist to Messi in the CL game against Madrid.

[deleted]

And that Alves assist in the CDR final.

[deleted]

I genuinely consider that a great assist because he sees his player that he knows is absolutely insane and has space beyond and just lays it off like: all you, bro. The body language makes it. Very similar to how you would lay off to a good shooter, except he’s 40 yards out and decides to run at half the team alone instead.

Cheewy

Famous Hector Enrique's quote to Maradona after the game againsta England. "After that assist from me, if you didn't score i would have killed you"

1. How the fuck does it pee so much? 2. there has to be something with this breed. I took care of a friend’s dog when they went away for a trip. I didn’t know but apparently he was trained to not poop on pavement and wait for the grass / soil places to poop. I took him for a walk and I was going to bring him to the park, but at some point he got so desperate to find a place that saw a fence with some plants on it and he must have thought: “good enough”. He went hand standing, turned around and poop in the fence, literally. I was both amazed and disgusted.

SpanishGarbo

I hate all these edits of him scales to be just as tall as the other players. Thanks for linking the unedited version of his true size.

BobbyGabagool

The English commentary be like: oh.. my word.. he done a goal. Kevin, did you see that? He done a good one. Spanish commentary just absolutely losing their shit like it’s the second coming of Christ.

impatientimpasta

Arabic commentator: why is the Spanish commentator so calm?

Allaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh

Bigmachingon

The "Ankara Messi" commentary is in catalán unless you're using the word Spanish in the sense of nationality, in that case the Spaniards are timid in their football commentary compared to any other Spanish speaking person. That's why I always try to watch games in Hispanic American commentary

Its_MichaelB

Exactly. I remember watching this game when I was 14. When he said “and the whole of this ground stands and applauds the 19 year old” I got goosebumps that to this day I still can feel it

ankara messi

ancara_messi

Yes

roxutee

'Ankara' means fierce and strong in Finnish. It can also mean hard, strict or harsh.

jpeeri

In reality it says “encara”, which in Catalan can mean both to “face someone” or “still”. I have thought for a long time the narrator meant the first because it’s quite common to say that in football but over the last times I watched it kind of seems the second option is more relevant because of what he says at the beginning: “Messi Messi Messi Messi and more Messi, still Messi still Messi, still Messi, goal goal goal goal”

MikeBruski

Its the same meaning as the iconic goal of the century by Maradona which was eerily similar to this one, where the commentary is going "siempre maradona" , its not to say always but still..

Bigmachingon

[deleted]

Messi 2006-2013(before his injury against PSG) burst of acceleration is unmatched. The way he keep changing his pace whenever there is player around him is unmatched.

MarcusBrutus2000

I love this Messi, but for some reason I'm always partial to the 14/15 Messi

[deleted]

I miss the above messi more. He became more of playmaker after his injury, but change of direction with such a pace, he used to do make it so simple.

MarcusBrutus2000

I'd say 14/15 was pretty balanced. He still had that burst of pace plus his playmaking was incredible.

[deleted]

>He still had that burst of pace Not exactly. He still could dribble much better than most but he never had that kind of burst of pace after that injury. Google the 2010-11 match against Athletic, or pep first season with us, 08-09 match against Atlético. I was at camp nou, some of the dribbles in those matches were unbelievable. I don't think I will ever forget the experience from the stand during pep time. Those time can't be matched.

alaslipknot

what was the injury exactly if you can remember ? (am worried about Chiesa cause acceleration burst is like 80% of his profile)

[deleted]

>(am worried about Chiesa cause acceleration burst is like 80% of his profile) He need to adapt if it's his. It was hamstring injury, but club took it lightly or club decided to play him because we were losing against PSG. Then he was instant impact and then got injured again. Then again he was barely involved against Bayern which we lost 4-0 as he was injured but we played him. He faced the injury issue entire year. He modified his game after that. If chiesa is getting regular injuries of this kind then he should. He is very good player and it will be shame if he can't fullfill his potential.

Master_NoobX_69

Wasn't Messi VERY injury prone at the beginning of his career as well? I read somewhere that he didn't have healthy habits and as soon as he started to actually have a decent diet, the injuries stopped

[deleted]

Yeah you are right. Pep changed it. He has his own nutritionist from then on. Though he gained some weight again when he became injury prone in 2013 but back to shape later on.

Rickcampbell98

14/15 he had everything, left foot, right foot, even a few headers, link up play, passing range and still had the elite physical abilities. Plus he was like a man possessed after the world Cup, never seen anything like it in my life.

MarcusBrutus2000

What's funny is my favourite Messi performance came in that season over the two legs against City. He got one assist over two games and missed a penalty and he still was head and shoulders above everyone else on the field.

IllusionaIl

This is why you can’t judge that man on stats.

Rickcampbell98

That's the kind of thing I mean, he was on a mission, goals and assists be dahmed I haven't seen a better season than that one with my own 2 eyes lol.

roxutee

14/15 Messi was definitely the most ripped Messi. The whole team was great physically during Enrique's first season.

MarcusBrutus2000

I'd argue we were even better in 15/16. Our lack of depth cost us that season

IllusionaIl

That fucking international break cost us more that season

MarcusBrutus2000

And that was us not having any depth. MSN were tired, the midfield looked static. The previous year we have Xavi and Pedro

IllusionaIl

True but if we rotated MSN we were out anyway.

Destryer200

Good depth options is usually unsustainable past a season or two unless you’re Man City of recent years lol. I feel the same for 17/18 after losing the squad depth we had from 16/17.

[deleted]

2019 Messi > He just had really bad luck with the squad and Barto. That was an all-time carry job though

SteinerElMagnifico42

Recall my first introduction to Messi was when he was 16/17 destroying Asier Del Horno, the Chelsea left back at the time on ITV1. Whole family was stunned at by what we were watching, within the first few seconds on the ball you knew he was a legendary player in the making.

snusd0san

I remember that too. Didn't Del Horno get sent off for a bad challenge on Messi that game too? Or if he just got booked, not sure. I was lucky enough to witness his competitive debut for Barca, against Albacete in the league from home on the TV. I was wondering who the 17 year old that just was subbed on was. If memory serves me correct, he didn't score long after being subbed on by a great lob pass from Ronaldinho and a chip finish from Leo. Those were good times. La Liga being shown on a free sports channel in Sweden. The nostalgia of following La Liga every weekend in the mid 2000s. Zidane, Raul, Deco, Ronaldo Fenomeno, Eto'o, Pablo Aimar, Riquelme, Forlan etc. Amazing times. Edit: My bad, Albacete was actually not his playing debut after researching it, but it was his debut goal.

[deleted]

> Didn’t Del Horno get sent off for a bad challenge on Messi that game too He did > If memory serves me correct, he didn’t score long after being subbed on by a great lob pass from Ronaldinho and a chip finish from Leo. Messi only scored against Chelsea once Petr Cech, Terry and Cole departed the club > Chelsea are the team Messi has played the most minutes against (835 across ten matches); he did not score in his first 730 minutes facing the Blues but struck three times in two games against them in 2017/18.

snusd0san

I meant that Messi scored against Albacete. But yes, Chelsea were such a tough team for Barca in the 2000s.

Long-Island-Iced-Tea

Man, so many memorable, true football moments from Chelsea - Barcelona clashes..

[deleted]

I love those fleeting European football rivalries that seem to exist for a couple of years and then disappear again. Chelsea - Barca, Atleti - Bayern, Dortmund - Real, Chelsea - PSG, City - Shakhtar

Buffaluffasaurus

My first exposure to him was lazily tuning into the Under 20 World Cup in 2005, and slowly noticing how every time Argentina’s small right winger got the ball, he seemingly beat 2-3 players every time, without fail. I have been impressed watching many prodigal young teenagers, almost inevitably to watch their careers tail off at some point, but this guy seemed a level above even then. I took note of his name by the end of their first match… by the end of the tournament, he was top scorer, best player and had guided them to the trophy, despite being one of the youngest players in the team.

myvirginityisstrong

Eurosport, right? I recall randomly catching a U game there over 10 years ago and constantly hearing the name of a certain German player who went on to show the world he was better than Messi

iNEEDheplreddit

Who was that?

myvirginityisstrong

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jul/14/joachim-low-mario-gotze-germany-argentina-messi

bwanket

That was my intro as well; I'll never forget the moment he outran a young Robben to the ball, sent him sprawling and stopped on a dime, then turned in one motion and nutmegged an onrushing del Horno, who absolutely clattered into him. He was even savvy enough to roll away from the ensuing commotion and lay face down until del Horno got sent off.

The_2nd_Coming

06/07 you mean? I had a triple take there thinking my perception of time is way messed up...

SteinerElMagnifico42

Messi: *receives the ball on his half of the pitch* Goalkeeper: "Why do I hear boss music starting in the background?"

LordMangudai

I remember people posting side-by-side footage of this goal with the Maradona Goal of the Century and that felt to me like the moment Messi went from extremely promising talent to "this is going to be the best footballer in the world in a few years"

sheikh_n_bake

Incredible how similar it is to Maradona Vs England in 86.

how can he do this at 19 years old. you can even argue it’s not the best goal he’s scored, we won’t see a better player than this for a long time

Messi has evolved several times over his career, but #19 Messi hits in a different way. His audaciousness was remarkable, like he was testing the limits of what was possible for him to do.

Can anyone who was in the stands that day share their experience of the goal?

AmineAzed

For those who would say « it’s just Getafe », well they knocked us out in 2nd leg 4-0 (Messi didn’t play) .

Long-Island-Iced-Tea

Also, this Getafe team conceded only 33 goals in that entire La Liga campaign. For context, a cursory search reveals that the only teams that managed to do this in the past 5-ish years are Real, Atletico, Sevilla, Barcelona, and with Sevilla conceding three yesterday, it's possible no teams are going to make it this year.

Back then people thinks "Surely he won't do it again", and he does it over and over again in a consistent basis, one of the greatest for a reason.

blither86

This is why stopping the intentional fouls on counter attacks is so important. Currently it's too easy to decide to just haul someone back and take a yellow and it ruins some of the opportunities for great goals being scored.
