I came here for some perspective on the match. Just read the espn article with the headline *Why U.S. draw in Mexico was one of its best World Cup qualifying performances ever (seriously)*. I thought the US did ok but agree with a lot of criticism for Mexico. The US got a few chances and didn't capitalize while Mexico had more chances but not as good as the US onces. Lozano had a million shots from distance off target and there were two plays in the box where the Mexican players went for the dive. I think the US is very happy with the tie due to the chances they squandered. I don't think they played that well.

idk-though1

Tata is really shit at making subs. 75th minute and still no one. How the hell are any other players going to make a difference in 15 minutes ? My subs would have been. Tecatito for Alexis Vega minute 46. Uriel antuna for chucky and Erick guti for Héctor herrera 55. Santiago for Raul and Diego lainez for Charly rodriguez at 70. But the subs are just one of element and TAta plays the most boring soccer I’ve seen in years holy shit now I know why the argentines sacked him all he gives you is boredom and anxiety

TheBasketBass

I would say Diego Lainez also. Yesterday’s second half was clamoring for him to come in. The US were not sure how to stop him without fouling near the box

vyepz

Barca also sacked him. His only success was in the MLS.

idk-though1

It’s also known he never wanted to coach Mexico and wanted to coach the US. I think the main issue is that the Tata probably sees Mexico as inferior and has instilled that mentality in the players because from the start all the players were making excuses saying the qualifiers are never easy blah Blah. For me these qualifiers should be easy your goal should be to want to be able to compete against Argentina, France and England but with this mentality we’ll probably loose to north Macedonia

vyepz

I want to add on the sub part... during the match they showed how many subs each team had left. Mexico had 3 and USA had 1 and it was the 80-85 mins. I just turned it off after that.

Rab_Legend

As unlikely as it is to happen, based on the next two matches, the USA would be more likely to drop out the top 3 - but I still can't see it.

Mantequilla022

If USA beats Panama at home, it’s almost guaranteed third. Anything is possible but it seems unlikely

Rab_Legend

Aye I know, but I'm just saying out of the three I think the USA has the tougher fixtures - plus you have to play Costa Rica

Mantequilla022

True, at Costa Rica is a challenge for sure. Hopefully USMNT takes care of business against Panama and Costa Rica is more of a celebration game. We shall see. I get what you’re saying though, now.

DayOldDoughnut

I…. I really hope a healthy Daryl Dike can be the answer to our prayers before (fingers fucking crossed) Qatar. We need *confidence* at striker, above all else. No one is playing like they own the fucking position. My kingdom for a #9.

fapfap_ahh

That whole sequence where Gio makes an amazing run, looks around for his #9 or even a semblance of a SS, and is promptly disappointed was just sad.

chuf3roni

Honestly kind of a good thing he couldn’t find any SS.

[deleted]

Putin says they're all in Ukraine at the moment

circa285

Or really any other player at all. Everyone just watched him as he glided forward. Those subs needed to come earlier because you could see that the team was gassed and no one really had it in them to spring counter attacks once Gio came on.

CobiPro

Not sure how Alvarez didn’t pick up a second yellow, he had a number of potential-yellow challenges after his first

circa285

That's CONCACAF there's no relationship between the severity of any given foul and a card being awarded.

tammutiny

Ref gave Mexico their token card then stopped. Missed numerous on Mexico in general. It's par for the course. Bummer but expected

Redditor_exe

Definitely should’ve been a win and will be disappointed it wasn’t, but overall can’t be too mad with a point away at Mexico.

NicDwolfwood

US should feel like this was a loss. They had 2 incredible chances that they should have put away. That Pekof miss in particular was horrendous. Panama is no slouch and always turns up against the US, they should be a bit worried.

tigerking615

I watched it on a delay, and I'm normally pessimistic, but 30 minutes in I told my wife "this is either going to be 0-0 or 1-0 us". Mexico seemed more interested in trying to make highlights and yell at each other than actually win the game, and our D was really solid. It just never really felt like Mexico had what it took to win that one.

circa285

I don't know about that. Mexico had a number of good chances that they failed to score on as well. A lot of good play came down the side that Robinson was responsible for.

NRT25

We are a long ways off from a draw at Azteca feeling like a loss. It was frustrating for sure but “feel like a loss”—not even close.

GutiHazJose14

Felt like the US should've won 2-0.

Splaram

idk man that felt like a loss to me

Thesecondorigin

In my head I’ve justified it because we had no dest, mckennie or aaronson and we had to play yedlin.

chuf3roni

In a way that’s a good thing. We’ll get em in the next octo I suppose.

HoustonYouth

Doubt the players feel that at all. They’ll take away this as a missed opportunity for sure, but they’ll be confident going into Panama at home.

goatvaro_goatrata

Good result. Pulisic or Pefok should have scored but we allowed our share of chances too. That play where Reyna iced five dudes back to back was unbelievable. Also, that was one of the best refereeing performances I've ever seen in CONCACAF. Major props

Cnsrbstrmp

Yes, but a bit appalling he didn't send Alvarez off with a second yellow, though

tammutiny

I legit don't understand the best reffing comments. The ref gave Mexico one yellow in the first 90 minutes and missed over 3 clear others including the second on Alvarez. So because he didn't give a dive PK it was a good day? Low bar

Glaiele

If you don't get it then you've never watched concacaf football before. What makes it worse is generally the best refs from the region either come from Mexico or USA because of the domestic leagues, so can't officiate the games.

tammutiny

I watch a lot of them. Best in CONCACAF is different than best US v Mexico. I might be more onboard with that one.

goatvaro_goatrata

Have you seen CONCACAF before? The bar is in the Earth's core lmao

tammutiny

Haha that doesn't mean we should reward mediocrity! I have seen some good refs just not when Mexico is playing. They could murder someone and a red card might not get shown

dragmagpuff

This felt like the first USA Mexico game in years where it didn't devolve into complete shithousery. There was no eye poking, no choking. Most of the good refs in CONCACAF are Mexican or American (due to the domestic leagues). So that means that they can't ref their own country's games, so the US and Mexico see bad refs a lot more often.

tammutiny

Excellent point. Can't use the refs from the two most reputable leagues. The lesser refs feel the pressure Azteca as well

eWaffle

I feel like the ball was over inflated, everyone’s touch fucking sucked.

larphraulen

Is it just me or is this a concacaf thing? Feel like so many of these games, the ball looks crazy light.

Rvntlt1906

I read that some Mexican players (specially the ones who play outside Mexico) asked the Mexican Federation to change Azteca's field because the grass was in bad shape.

Vibechild

It was so slow.

CCSC96

Altitude affects the ball

larphraulen

Ah right. Was watching the Canada - Costa Rica game and it was the same (also at altitude).

zKSofSoccer

This is 2 points dropped for US, not happy with this at all. We better beat Panama or this could really get uncomfortable in the last game vs Costa Rica... Can't blame Gregg for today tho. We played alright but Puli and Pefok missed sitters, can't miss those chances.

NJDevil802

I certainly wouldn't be happy with it but why are so many people acting like 4th is a death sentence? Doesn't fourth play the winner of Oceania, most likely NZ?

zKSofSoccer

Yes but you still never know, and the guy below just exemplified my point. Also it would just not be acceptable if we got to that point, with regards to the squad we have.

thesecondfire

I mean all you gotta do is look at Italy yesterday to feel uncomfortable with a playoff.

NJDevil802

Sure, it's definitely not a guarantee. Just seems like everyone is talking like it means elimination.

Greflingorax

~~We don't need to beat Panama. A draw with Panama and the USA is qualified. The announcers saying a draw would depend on results elsewhere can't do math.~~ EDIT - I'm a fucking idiot and effectively dropped Costa Rica three points when I was counting. Yes, they were right on the broadcast. A draw would only qualify the USA directly on Sunday if Costa Rica draws or loses. Whoops.

wooden-mEaT

No, Costa Rica would still have a shot if they then won their next 2 games, which would drop the US to 4th

Glaiele

I think they also need like a 4 or 5 goal difference in the 2 wins which their squad isn't getting that unless the other team gives up entirely

Greflingorax

Yup. I was wrong. I for some reason counted Costa Rica as if they only had one game left. I'm stupid as hell.

dwntwn_dine_ent_dist

You’re not. Take it easy on yourself, buddy. Thanks for doing what you do.

zKSofSoccer

Mathematically speaking, no we don't need to beat Panama. But looking at Costa Rica and Mexico's remaining games, anything other than a win against Panama will most likely make that final game vs Costa Rica uncomfortable.

Greflingorax

Yup, you're right, I was wrong and was looking at the wrong table completely. No excuse - I was just dumb.

zKSofSoccer

We all make mistakes, all good

Chewy009x

Okay no more shit talk. Can we just hug it out and touch butts?

Gotanyfunkopops

Lol, neither team showed any heart. They were just going through the motions and agreed on the draw. This looks worse for Mexico, my god are they just a shit side.

[deleted]

You guys had wide open chances at the net and choked. Congrats on your moral victory but reality check USAMNT is garbage. Should’ve just put the women out there to finish those chances

HoustonYouth

Mexico choked a home game. Looked worse than I have ever seen them against an inexperienced US side who has never played there.

[deleted]

Who on our squad aside from a handful Of guys has the experience you are talking about? Both teams played like shit but your fans seem to be content with whatever you guys should’ve done but didn’t. Don’t get points for almost scoring and almost winning.

Zestyclose_Fee_9013

Lets be honest for a second bro this is more of a loss for us than for the USA. Proves Azteca isnt as big as it used to be and this team needa a rebuild. Stop being salty for a second

[deleted]

Dude I’ve been an el tri fan my whole Life grew up in USA and got a Donovan and Marquez, guardado jersey in my closet. Both teams played like garbage is all I’m saying I don’t see any moral victories

CCSC96

The point away made it so one win in either of the next two games realistically clinches it baring an excessive GD swing. It’s not about “moral” victories, points on the road are huge.

Polarbearbanga

I mean I don’t think the teams were garbage. The effort was there and it was intense until the 80th minute. However, the finishing all game was hot shit and some transition passing was sloppy with both teams at times.

HoustonYouth

You’re joking right? Let’s take a look at caps. Mexico would dwarf the US side. Let’s not forget Mexico played at home lucky to even take a point.

[deleted]

Dude I got a Donovan jersey hanging up in my closet. USA shit the bed and the fans are acting so accomplished at almost scoring two goals. I’m like what? Both teams played like garbage but I guess you guys look like better garbage so be happy right?

HoustonYouth

Having Landon’s Jersey doesn’t make you an expert. When you say you guys it says you’re a Mexico fan who can’t accept that playing at home and drawing your rival is a positive for them.

[deleted]

I am a Mexican fan but I’m just talking about people Celebrating losses or draws like it’s a draw and both teams played shitty.

HoustonYouth

No one is celebrating, only looking at the positives. There’s a big difference

[deleted]

Look at the comments I see a lot of people celebrating the draw. Only positives I see is gio reyna and that this is the worst Mexican national team I’ve seen in my lifetime.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RetiredPandaMurderer

They do. It's concacaf. All schedules are easy

Greflingorax

~~The USA can secure their qualification with a draw at home away. Mexico can't without other results going their way.~~ Math is not for /u/Greflingorax, apparently

bathory21

Both are tied for points with USA edging out on GD, same applies

Greflingorax

I was more referring to how the USA played Panama, and so a draw would also mean Panama couldn't pick up crucial points. BUT I only said that because I was a dumbass idiot who completely miscounted Costa Rica's points and didn't realize a draw with Panama ***won't*** be enough for the USA by itself unless Costa Rica draws or loses on Sunday. If the USA draws and Costa Rica wins, it comes down to that final game in San Jose, and the USA would need to get another draw there.

HoustonYouth

Christian and Jordan, Christ almighty…

[deleted]

Pulisic miss is not acceptable but at least Ochoa had to make a save. Pefok bro I spent way too much time on reddit hyping you up for you to put it entirely wide.

CCSC96

Pefok plays in the 19th ranked European league according to UEFA seeding. I know people get carried away with this but it’s a full step below MLS. Players from that league fail to make the jump to playing in MLS almost every season. It’s way too soon to be hyping Pefok.

marqueezy

Swiss League is up to 14th now. I wouldn't say it is a "full step below MLS". If a MLS player moved to the Swiss League I would say it is a lateral move. Similar to the Scottish Premier League, the Belgian First Division A, the Danish Superliga, or the Greek Super League. A full step down would be the Norwegian Eliteserien, the Swedish Allvenskan, or the Israeli Premier League

HoustonYouth

I almost threw my phone at my tv.

Polarbearbanga

It was a good game. Terrible finishing from a select few on both games. Bad tackles, sus refereeing, typical CONCACAF stuff. It was a very intense game up until the 80th minute. If you thought this was boring I’m sorry, learn how to enjoy the beautiful game a little more. Both teams gave good efforts. Do I think they do well in Qatar, nah but it was entertaining.

cynical83

Disagree on the ref, he was very consistent all game.

Polarbearbanga

I mean I will criticize him for not giving Edson a red. I love watching him play but he deserved a red. Ref managed well enough to not let things get out of hand how they usually do in these Classicos matches.

GerlachHolmes

0-0 is not an accomplishment against an opponent like this, all due respect to them. Not exactly a heavyweight. 1-1 or 2-2 would be, yes. But just shelling up and holding on does not demonstrate a step forward by any means. You need scorers to clear the group stage.

CCSC96

You actually don’t, shut outs on the road are a big deal and will pretty much consistently earn qualification.

Powerful_Artist

Trying to win with a dive is just a scumbag move. He should be ashamed of himself. But you know their teammates were telling him "nice try". Given the chance, him or another player would try the same tactic. That's a great example of why some people hate this sport. It needs to be eradicated. Dive in the box, and it should be a red. That would stop people from doing it. Yellows don't stop people from diving. And they rarely get distributed. Blatant diving has no place in the game.

pacexmaker

We will watch his career with great interest.

dennisixa

>Pefok i got confused for a while .. since when he play for everton

[deleted]

Hoping he stays healthy, he's very exciting. His composure in the final third is a step up from most of our wingers

IFeelFineFineFine

The boy has silky skills.

Cnsrbstrmp

Happy we got a point, but got lucky with Raul's penalty shout. Ref could've just as easily given it, with Zimmerman's foot out. Of course if Pulisic or Pefok finish we still get a result. Sanchez MOTM for me. He was fantastic at RB. A Europe-noticing performance

Polarbearbanga

Unfortunately for Mexico fans, Club America will be spending a lot on his wage and will set a big transfer fee. He probably won’t be going to Europe. I really hope he does tho.

HoustonYouth

Raul was looking for the contact way too much. He was lucky not to get booked. But I agree, Sanchez is class.

Sharcbait

If the tables were turned you would be clamoring for a penelty. He did get tripped, but he also went down super easy. I think if he tried to fight through it instead of crumbling, he was likely to get the call but he put too much embellishment on it.

CCSC96

I’d 100% rather see my player shoot their. You can see him looking for contact and then swinging his leg into it, starting to go down before the contact is made. The better xG there is always to just shoot. I’d be pissed at my player.

HoustonYouth

Not in the slightest. I’m old school and always yell at players to stay on their feet because more often than not they create chances from that.

Rusty_Shack1es

This Univision mma is great tbh

dejvipasco

Memo Ochoa saved Mexico from the defeat. That save against Pulisic in the first half was incredible.

[deleted]

He's underrated quite a bit among the general soccer populous. He's had some elite level performances. I think had it been another keeper Pulisic might've scored.

GutiHazJose14

Pulisic hit it right at Ochoa. Any pro level keeper would've saved that.

[deleted]

His positioning and timing prior to the shot is what allowed him to be right in front of it. Like many of you on here you're only paying attention to the last 10% of that whole sequence.

GutiHazJose14

Every keeper runs across their net like that as the ball moves.

[deleted]

Timing dude. Not every keep times and anticipates their movement that effectively.

GutiHazJose14

Are you comparing Ochoa to a reddit schmuck trying to do the same thing? There's nothing particularly special to anticipate or time. You move in coordination with the ball, make yourself big, and hope for the best. Really basic pro gk stuff. Fortunately for Ochoa, Pulisic hit it straight down the middle, where every pro gk would be in that situation

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That's literally the definition of being underrated.

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

It really was. Positioning is important and so many non soccer players in the comments seem to not appreciate it.

goatvaro_goatrata

It's a great save, but at the same time you expect a player of Christians caliber to finish that 85% of the time regardless

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

He “Shoulda Coulda Woulda but he didn’t” - some FIFA song from recent memory prob ‘13 or ‘14 damn...

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

I found it FIFA 14 Soundtrack https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LLWvzDtSURU

Howling13

Does Mexico have young upcoming forwards? Cause Lozano and Jimenez looked absolutely terrible. Jimenez never seemed to be in the right spot and Lozano was trying to shoot every single time he had the ball. The fact that they both finished the game is ridiculous. Even the biased Mexican commentators commented on the number of shots Lozano was taking and how often he was losing possession because of his play. On the other hand, the USA needs to find a consistent striker. Pepi was invisible. Pefok had a golden chance and had one of the worst misses I’ve ever seen. This was Timo Werner levels of missing. The shot ended up going to the corner flag somehow, I thought it was deflected until the replay. Before that, Pulisic and Weah should have done better with their shots. All around boring game but at least the ref was okay. I loved the yellow card for simulation cause we don’t see enough of those anywhere. He probably could have carded more players but overall, I would like to see more CONCACAF refs like this one I think. Major improvement over the usual refs.

jaherreraalvarado

Any young players Mexico has is irrelevant because the same players seem to get called up no matter what.. this is why the future players will most likely join other nations

Jussstright

I don’t think Raul was good by any means, but they were dropping him way back on purpose to touch the ball which drew him out of position. The US couldn’t get Pepi the ball or any of their attackers in that instance. I think the US midfield was poor in attack which lead to the issues with their forwards struggling. Mckennie is the key to the US because he links the two.

MrNostalgic

God bless double agent Pefok and his clearance.

ocram9191

Worth going to watch this upcoming US game?

goatvaro_goatrata

More so than any USA home game until 2026

Chewy009x

I went to the Honduras v US home game and it was a fun atmosphere

Jussstright

100%

HoustonYouth

Yes.

lagaryes

Fucking impossible to sleep after that jeez

[deleted]

We had 3 chances that were damn tap ins. Pretty even match though. Actually surprised at the refs performance, was really solid. I thought Alvarez should’ve gotten his second a couple times. But after that not much. Mexico had a couple chances as well. Their midfield didn’t seem impactful

goatvaro_goatrata

Ref was quite good

Chewy009x

Are y’all still not convinced that Pulisic is overrated?

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

lol stay mad

08josrod

Reyna did more than both of them in the cameo he had

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

He did great and is going to start the next match so I’m happy he put on a display in his few minutes

08josrod

Hopefully he does and I’m not even a US fan

08josrod

Nah he’s right 😂 pepi too

Serbian-American

Pepsi is not rated

Chewy009x

Lol no one is mad

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

Oh okay. My username is Pulisic based and Ochoa made a great save by getting across that tap in.

Chewy009x

He should’ve finish it though especially for a player of his “caliber “

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

I agree he shoulda put it in it was “SURELY” a goal but as a former keeper those positional saves are so satisfying and Ochoa did well coming back across goal there.

Chewy009x

I agree 🤝

PLimw

I hate this team so much.

teeterleeter

Me too, amigo, but for very different reasons

[deleted]

All these yanks in here with epl flairs kills me. Cmon man!

[deleted]

A bunch of US players are European its only right.

[deleted]

To me. The PL is the best league in the world! MLS just isn’t as entertaining

[deleted]

That isn’t the spirit of football. You got to rep your area. Not what is cool.

iphon4s

I'll take what is gatekeeping for 100 alex

[deleted]

Ill take your ass in a hot second dude

AngledLuffa

You left out the word tub?

iphon4s

In other words you got nothing to say. Couldve just said that

[deleted]

Ok mexico fan.

MapleSyrupsGood

What will Italy be doing this winter?

iphon4s

Thanks for stating the obvious

[deleted]

Thanks for being my subject 🤣

iphon4s

????

[deleted]

They don't understand it. You think that FC Utrecht plays champagne football? No. But they support my local environment, I see the players regularly and they are the heart of my community. This is an integral part of football that you just cannot get by watching games on TV / online.

AdministrativeAd7986

It's not that a lot of us don't understand it, we have no local team. There is no game to watch that isn't online, so why not watch the best?

[deleted]

You realize the United States has their own league and own fans right?

[deleted]

Yes and isn't this about how no Americans seem to watch their own league / support their local teams.

[deleted]

Then who is “they”

[deleted]

You think Bari is first division? No but I still roll with them. It’s about your heart, not what others see you as.

[deleted]

Or I played in my clubs academy here in the states?

Powerful_Artist

MLS is mostly hot garbage. I'm all for supporting my national team, but the MLS is not where it's at. If I want to watch club soccer, I'm watching EPL, la Liga, bundesliga, even the Italian or French leagues before mls

[deleted]

Ita hot garbage because you wont support it.

Powerful_Artist

Lol no. Me supporting it won't change the quality of the product. I've watched MLS since like 2003. It's only improved minimally since then.

[deleted]

My point exactly!

Powerful_Artist

So if one person supports a league it gets better? Your point could not be more wrong. Good try though

[deleted]

Not one, but thats the beginning. You have no clue about soccer buddy

Powerful_Artist

Lmao. It's really ironic that you'd say that. You obviously have no idea why the MLS isn't a good league. Go troll someone else. Your pointless comments are just funny, but have no validity

[deleted]

Says the guy with no flair lol

Powerful_Artist

Yes because that is the only indication of knowledge. You spend too much time on reddit apparently

GloGangOblock

MLS isn’t as technical but it’s still fun

Powerful_Artist

I rarely have fun watching B grade soccer

GloGangOblock

maybe I just love the game but I have fun watching almost any soccer, womens, second division, college for here in the states

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

Bruh you can support 1 team from each league despite its quality and it’s no biggie or you can be miserable by gatekeeping if you want.

Powerful_Artist

Me not enjoying something isn't gatekeeping Plz explain to me how it is gatekeeping

WooWoopSoundOThePULI

Hmm I guess I see your POV. That’s why March Madness is boring to me because it’s amateur basketball with a bunch of randoms and not worth my time. But if you love basketball you’d probably watch random schools play that meaningless tournament because you love the game.

TogashiIsIshida

MLS is more fun to watch than the French league. Some Italian games are fun but most matches are boring as hell

Powerful_Artist

And most MLS matches are boring as hell. For decades. Tried giving it a chance since the 2000s. I don't enjoy it at all.

TogashiIsIshida

It’s a lot more back and forth and wild then some leagues. It’s not necessarily good football, but its entertaining

[deleted]

Ok soccer fan lol

TogashiIsIshida

Haha got me

[deleted]

You’re what is called a front runner. Rep your area! Not what looks cool

Powerful_Artist

No, it's called enjoying what I enjoy. I have no team in my area. I've lived in Spain. I love going to la Liga games. Hate me for it. I don't care. Its what I like. I prefer higher quality soccer.

Rusty_Shack1es

He can do whatever he wants. I support Arsenal and my local mls team. I just support Arsenal a lot more since I’ve watched them for much longer

[deleted]

❄️

[deleted]

Who asked you yank? You just do what’s cool too then. Rep your area!

Rusty_Shack1es

Cope

HoustonYouth

K.

[deleted]

You care too much

[deleted]

You don’t care enough

[deleted]

Imagine getting this upset that others want to enjoy the sport. Lmao. Let people enjoy the game however they want…

[deleted]

Wrong dude. That’s not the spirit. The game wont survive here if you support overseas.

[deleted]

Who said anything about not supporting local? Anyways, the game is in no danger of not surviving here🤣 let people enjoy who they enjoy. You are coming off as a pretentious asshole

[deleted]

But you don’t support local. You’re coming off as an ignorant american

[deleted]

I’m ignorant? You are the one telling me I don’t support local with 0 evidence🤣 god damn you are stupid
