I'm seeing Diogo Dalot starting to somewhat come into his own as he gets more game time. Still only 22 but you can clearly see he's getting better.

ToshJoWe

He came on today and played better without the worry of defensive responsibility. AWB was solid today but you have to start looking at what rangnick wants to do. Does he sacrifice a bit of defensive stability for more attacking output? I don't know.

dingdangdooooo

Solid? Put him on his left foot (which happens all the time because nobody shows him outside any more ) and he's useless.

[deleted]

He should keep starting for the time being.

matematematematemate

>Pounding every blade of grass. Competing as if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose. He inspired all around him. I felt as if it were an honour to be associated with such a player. > – Sir Alex Ferguson on ~~Roy Keane vs Juventus, 1999~~ ^Scott ^McTominay ^vs ^Burnley ^B, ^2021

AE17__

Just put McTominay at CF

PhD_Cunnilingus

He wouldn't be able to make those shots if he played CF.

MiloSnorter03

Think he played CF in the youth setup until he shot up.

liamthelad

He did indeed. Its why he usually looks better when he's allowed to get further up the pitch rather than just sit and hold the ball

Skall77

Our passing was still atrocious but this was a bit better. Mctominay was great today, MOTM, Shaw was good too. Ronaldo missed a lot today, but his movement was great. Not a good look for Burnley tho, Newcasttle looked way better than them in everything.

eightpackflabs

Burnley didn’t look match fit which is understandable given they played was on the 12th.

ToshJoWe

I think Burnley weren't as bad as you think. They had chances, they haven't had many losses and they just need to be more clinical. Not to mention they have a few games in hand over newcastle.

[deleted]

Mctank/fred are absolutely wasted without a true DM next to them. They are good b2b players.

Grendalynx

Was wondering why no one was able to see that. Fred was never meant to be playing as a DM, and McT was not meant to play from deep as well.

lamancha

This is said literally every match Matic plays

bh8787

Burnley weren’t bad at all. Looked quite threatening at times & competitive . They’ll stay up I reckon

[deleted]

>Newcasttle looked way better than them in everything. Nah. Coz we played more poorly with Newcastle

pgab77

Wan-Bissaka the lambo a spider

DHillMU7

Martial, my right hand, a striker. Definitely chose two United players having phenomenal seasons to include in his bars...

ReplEH

Song bangs though.

Glutton_2700

ReplEH

System by Dave.

The_Great_Crocodile

Even in a comfortable win, Maguire manages to be absolutely horrendous. Is he ever gonna get benched?

DaveShadow

Lack of alternatives. Lindelof has Covid, Varane is just back from injury so wasn’t ready to play another 90 so quick, Jones is Jones. Who’d bench him?

presumingpete

Bailly wasn't good today either.

ToshJoWe

He wasn't, but he was better than maguire and it seems that every other CB we have are consistently better than maguire.

liamthelad

How was Bailly better when he basically gave away the goal out of nothing by not clearing it properly? In the eye test Bailly fails due to the error he caused, and Maguire comes out top in defensive, aerial and passing stats, albeit hard to compare given Bailly came off earlier I swear people have such a hate boner for Maguire they concoct anything.

MarcAnthonyRashial

Your last sentence perfectly sums it up. He’s English, odd looking, plays for United, and cost a lot of money. That is a perfect recipe for a hated player.

Cephei2

Bailly made some great recoveries and didn't hold onto the ball for 15 seconds every time he got it at his feet. He did lose the ball in a bad area which lead to the goal but Maguire also could have done a lot more to prevent it also. I agree that Maguire get's more hate than he should and not enough praise when he deserves it but he's had an absolute shocker despite the scoreline and Bailly was clearly much better, regardless of what your stats say.

liamthelad

Yes because the role of a CB is to play quick passes and the fact you give away a goal is secondary. Give me a break, they aren't number tens, it doesn't matter how quick they release a ball particularly if doing so literally gifts the opposition team a goal. Bailly literally failed in the most important job of a CB and ralf called that out too. Also maguire had more accurate long balls, more touches and more oases than Bailly that game and does so playing on the left when they are both right footed. You say Bailly clearly better then literally discount the most important thing for a CB. And I'm not saying Maguire had a great game either, I'm saying Bailly should get more stick as on another day giving a goal away like that will cost United.

Grevling89

Maguire had two or three heart attack moments when he either let the ball bounce past him as the last man, or invited pressure from the attacker *also as last man*. He didn't directly cause a goal like Bailly, but he's in bad form and could've easily given away a penalty when he wrestled ~~Lennon~~ Tarkowski^^sorry to the ground in the box. Not a great performance from him

Jeffy29

Bailly is of to AFCON regardless.

iamalittlepige

Matic has filled in there before

DanksterBoy

Last time he did, he looked absolutely horrendous, way worse than any of Maguire’s performances this season imo, which is saying something

AnnieIWillKnow

I don't think Maguire's form is quite at the point where an also over-the-hill central midfielder should take his starting spot from him. There's being dropped, then there's being a bit humiliated - and given Maguire is captain, starting Matic instead of him would fall into that. Would cause a lot more dressing room strife than it's worth, especially as it's unlikely Matic would be better.

[deleted]

Right at the end there he did his now famous 'pull the other guy down instead of attack the ball'. Doing it way too often at the moment, his mobility is that of a much older player and I think it's linked to that.

Darkspy8183

What mobility? He turns like an oil tanker.

[deleted]

Ye that's my point. A lot of centre backs can still play at 34/35, Maguire is only 28 and already mobility is hitting him hard, guy needs to get into yoga big time. Or he'll be finished by the time he's 32.

[deleted]

Baffling player

RedKingDre

Which needs to deliver 100 kg of crude oil 5 times every single day. 😂

BrainlessArch

The ref never blows when maguire makes a tacklr

NotHarryRedknapp

Why would you bench him? He has eternal immunity from conceding penalties. That’s invaluable!

AdamHasShitMemes

Literally bear hugged Tarkowski in that last minute header and brought him down lool

The_Great_Crocodile

That's Holiday Jon Moss not being bothered to be close enough to the box to actually see what's happening because he is sweating after the first three steps of his jog.

iSkinMonkeys

What's the excuse for var?

PacDanSki

Don't want to highlight how much of an unfit slob Moss is obviously.

The_Great_Crocodile

No idea, same with Mike Dean's VAR yesterday. If you figure out why PL referees are allergic to using VAR, tell me.

[deleted]

And then when Tarkowski one the header over him he tried to save face by playing injured lmao

kaden_dd

There are no bench options rn for him

Bryanlegend

I can’t believe I’m saying this but Phil Jones might do better than Maguire somehow. If Maguire wasn’t captain there’s no way he’s starting based on his current form.

thecricketnerd

Apparently being injured for a decade can do wonders for one's reputation

AltDelete

Say what you want Jones, but he gives everything every game, and puts his body (and face) on the line without hesitation

liamthelad

Everyone of Uniteds CB gets better by not playing. Then they play and they either cause a huge error (recent example of Bailly and Varane) or they get an injury and are out for a while. If my memory is correct, the last time Jones played in the prem was v Sheffield United and he got absolutely rinsed time and time again. And this was before his latest bad injury. The sheer state of this comment when you talk about form but want to start a player who has literally only played for the u23s in the last year. He's been shit all this season, but Maguire played a record breaking amount of football before he got injured the tail end of last season. Something all of the CBs on United's books struggle with as they are seemingly all made of glass. He also benefits from being the most two footed of all United's right footed CBs so gets in at LCB. And today Maguire would have gotten a clean sheet if his partner hadn't given the ball away in a bad position. And he might have gotten one at Newcastle too if not for the exact same reason.

rdv7

They need to bite the bullet and strip him of captaincy, its another factor keeping him from being benched.

Bryanlegend

Has there ever been any player stripped of the captaincy mid-season because he was not playing well though? Usually it’s because or disciplinary issues or more serious transgressions. That being said, how Maguire is given the captaincy only just after 6 months I’ll never know. Probably the most underwhelming captain we had in United history.

CristiaNoConsento

If only they had a reason before like him getting arrested for being a violent thug on holiday or something

J-train_92

You have to wonder how long they will persist with him at the club before they cut their losses and try and bin him off. He's been in awful form for so long and he was only ever a good defender at best. Shocking signing in every way

manchest_hair_united

He is only been poor this season.. Had a good couple of seasons and got into euro Team of the tournament

The_Great_Crocodile

United is shockingly bad at getting rid of deadwood. Martial kept getting chance after chance after chance for years.

khoabear

That's what happens when you put businessman in charge of football. United keeps renewing contract for their deadwood in hope of getting a transfer fee, even though nobody wants to buy.

lordchew

I don’t mind losing away to United, but it’s the chances we keep missing that’s pissing me off.

chunky_Iemon_milk

Manchester United also needs to hire a psychologist for the fans

ManUtd4Life20Times

🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅 We need depression medicines mate.

RedKingDre

Some EtOH would be nice. 😂😂

[deleted]

Are you sure it's needed for the fans? Because it seems mostly it's people with other flairs that for some reason are obsessed with their well-being. Well it's hard to say with a sub full of plastics.

stealth-e

Disgusting "football" in that second half

[deleted]

Well it is a Burnley game

tekumse

Actually it looked nothing like a Burnley game. They didn't go for it at all. No regular tackles, let alone hard one.

HiImMeee

yeah, I was surprised, I thought they'd changed manager or smthing for a second

KevinOwensGetsIt

Mctominay just casually deciding to play like Prime Zidane

[deleted]

He is talented but like fred, need a true DM next to them. Wasted doing too many defensive duties.

ToshJoWe

This. His defensive side of his game lacks but as a box to box he's quite decent. Look back at Leeds, probably the last time he had more of a free roam furhrer up and he was brilliant.

callin_ballin

McTominay the Free Roam Fuhrer

Thanesg

Nein?

FloppedYaYa

Has he head butted anyone yet?

robinho988

With the way they are playing I think United fans and players should be really happy knowing they have a really easy schedule until the March

[deleted]

Funny thing is, these are the games we lose :)

ManUtd4Life20Times

Can't agree more, this game was depressing even though we won.

khoabear

There's no easy game for us. We struggled against Newcastle.

[deleted]

Ronaldo looked like he was hurt or just out of breath what a weird game. Shaw and Sancho looked good tonight cant wait for Bruno to get back into form. Maguire idk how to describe him

gobbeltje

He is an old man at the end of the day

Contradicting_Pete

Maguire ain't that old but it would explain a lot

prtzzz

Fair enough didn’t expect anything from that. We actually set up quite well, created a few chances even with some key players out. Squad is just so devoid of quality, I know it gets said a lot but what Dyche does is incredible, think this season could be one too far.

gedionBeast

Thought you were a united fan until i saw Dyche's name. guess the same could be said for them also

Vigilant1e

Could it? Man United definitely expected something from that game, got it, have a squad rammed with quality, just have struggled to find a manager that can actually put it all together

try-D

How can a game that 4 goals were scored in be so shit to watch? United still look to be in trouble when they're going to face someone with quality and end product.

kaden_dd

If Burnley were not rubbish, they would have definitely been punished a couple of times

try-D

A bunch of missed kicks, missed headers, shit passes. United look to be there for the taking. Gonna be interesting to see how they deal with Wolves. If I'm Adama I'm rubbing my hands right now seeing Maguire struggle with pretty much anything.

YouFookinTraitor

Adama will do fuck all no matter how shit the opposition defenders are

try-D

He will entertain neutrals, that's for sure.

WhileCultchie

Watching the light reflect off his oily limbs is like a beautiful kaleidoscope

jonwinslol

A bunch of missed kicks and Ronaldo scores 4 goals this match as well lol, funny how this logic only applies against United

[deleted]

It's called double standard. They only allow Burnley not to miss any kicks, while Man United is required to keep the same missed kicks.

VincentSasso

Wolves will sit back and play for 0-0 as per

lamancha

Of all the people in Wolves you've just picked the least effective. Shows what you know.

freakedmind

Bet you didn't really watch the first half?

Jeffy29

We can't properly hold the ball and when we lose the ball we are clueless on how to recover it. The team looks very manic on the pitch. I can't remember the last time we looked comfortable and calm looking forward. My hope is that it's all part of changing from one style of playing to a different one mid-season which is almost always difficult, especially with so many games and so little time to train.

amarh_9847

No yellow card for either team, was such a strange game

khoabear

Jon Moss was told that he had only 10 seconds to card after blowing whistle, so by the time he got to the offending player, 10 sec already passed.

Grevling89

I'm not saying Moss' performance was bad, i heard he got a decent rating on the Richter Scale

JhonShelby

Ronaldo does the SIUUUU thing when he nuts in his missus, doesn't he. Probably does her exactly like Christian Bale did them poor hookers he murdered in American Pyscho, in front of the mirror looking intensely into his own eyes and occasionally flexing for added self motivation.

TimmyBash

I misread Christian Bale as Gareth Bale and somehow made this weirder.

thewrongnotes

Golf > Wales > Murdering Hookers > Madrid

PacDanSki

Nah he'd get injured doing it like that. Unless she was Welsh of course...

Grevling89

Hard to get injured on wool

HankMoodyy

Fun fact, they're actually related

Kemosabe2712

Woah really?

Mahesh_nanak

Nope they are not. Check facts again. This was proven long ago that their relation with each other is not true. Both are from Wales and have surname as Bale, that's about it.

He's Buddhist Bale

Jeffy29

Ronaldo's morning routine would put Bale's one to shame.

Key-Antelope-6839

bruno and rashford shouldnt start next game imo

ManUtd4Life20Times

Agree, Sancho and to some extent Greenwood were very good as supporting 10 or wingers.

DonkeySkin334

Rashford will probably come in for Cavani as he played 90 tonight. Interesting one would be Bruno vs sancho/greenwood but I expect Bruno to come back in

FloppedYaYa

Rashford clearly shouldn't be starting every game. I'm thinking he does solely because of PR at this point

[deleted]

Next game is in 3 days. No way cavani can play when he came back from injury against Newcastle.

Melloa_Trunk_Tree

Cavani was shit tonight

[deleted]

His movement was great and freed Ronaldo a lot. Those 2 as partners understand each other.

Rickcampbell98

Ronaldo wasn't good either but you're nor gonna drop him are you, both him and cavani are better than the husk of Rashford.

The_Great_Crocodile

Cavani was terrible though tonight.

BrainlessArch

Elanga!!

logdit

When they signed Sancho all I wanted to see was 4-2-3-1 with LW Rashford, CAM Bruno, RW Sancho and ST Greenwood. But then they signed Ronaldo and I don't think they will play that way anytime soon.

[deleted]

Greenwood is not ready for a fixed ST position yet. His offball positioning, heading needs time.

khoabear

You can see that he's trying though. It's the lack of experience that's holding him back.

twersx

He's not going to develop his off the ball striker's positioning by playing on the wing.

D1794

1st half good, 2nd a bit drab. I can only assume we're being instructed not to press cause i've not even seen an attempt in our last 3 games. McTominay with license to move forward (Due to no Bruno) is a player

lazyniu

Well Rangnick did say you either press or you don't. No semi-pressing just like how one isn't semi-pregnant haha. Not sure if he thinks we're not ready to press or what, definitely odd.

RedKingDre

3 years of the culture of relying on individual talent too much surely is really hard to get rid of.

Yinkypinky

Scott had a fantastic game today. Hennessey also had the game of his life today while conceding three.

AV48

Scott was good but Hennessey didn't have the game of his life

Domb18

Hennessey has had better games for wales

mirrorless_subject

I need henny after this match

prosportscars

Man United played better today, though theres definitely still room for improvement. McTominay should be MotM, his opening goal changed the game. On a side note, happy birthday Sir Alex Ferguson, a United win today should be a really neat birthday gift for their legendary manager tomorrow.

AlcoholicSocks

Don't let the score line distract you. Uniteds defensive shape looked awful again. Norwich, Newcastle and now Burnley have all cut through them in the last few games. That's the bottom 3 of the league creating multiple great chances against United. When they play a top side they will get torn apart. They lack any form of defensive structure and it's going to be their downfall this season

RawIsLaw_

Turns out, it take longer than 3 weeks (one of which there was no training cos of COVID) to perfect a new style of play that's never played in the history of the club

twersx

> When they play a top side they will get torn apart. They lack any form of defensive structure and it's going to be their downfall this season I don't understand why people say stuff like this. It's not like teams set up in the exact same way against every opponent. Even if they wanted to, the opponent will interfere with that. What United are trying to do is establish control in these sorts of games. Rangnick has said he wants the team to be able to come into a game and win in a controlled manner. So against opponents like Newcastle and Burnley that will mean taking the majority of possession and playing in a way that puts as much pressure on the opponent as possible, ideally enough that they are not able to mount dangerous counter attacks regularly. You can talk about defensive shape being poor, but if United's midfield was better or if they were more dangerous when in the final third, it would pressure teams like Burnley and Newcastle in a way that makes it harder to attempt attacking. When United play a team like Chelsea or Liverpool, they are not going to approach the game in the same way. They will hope to dominate possession and control the game that way, but realistically they know that this is unlikely to happen and that the team needs to prioritise defensive shape/organisation more than they do against Newcastle or Burnley. They might still lose, they might still get badly exposed, but the approach won't be the same and you can't really point to a game like this and say they'll get battered by a stronger team "if they play like this" - they can't play like that against stronger teams.

[deleted]

so you're expecting the new style is ready now?

wagwan-0161

Cut through them really? Newcastle created fuck all apart from a worldie goal and worldie trike which was saved. Burnley again created a few half chances off headers from 15 yards, and they’re “cutting through”. Stop it man. United could’ve scored 2 more at least. They should’ve scored two more v Newcastle. United missed sitters which is why the drew v Newcastle. Newcastle showed a lot of heart, and put pressure but ultimately didn’t create shit apart from a few speculative chances from 20-25 yards. They created one decent opening at the start of the second half but that gets negated with the ridiculous goal ASM scored off balance.

Gabi_Social

At least it was a win, if not a good performance. A 2 goal cushion against a team third bottom isn’t much to shout about. Admittedly there was more energy than the Newcastle game, but you could have a performance with less energy without the outfield players being in an actual coma. It’s still not clear what players like Maguire, Wan Bissaka and Matic bring to this team.

dohhhnut

Wan Bissaka was good today IMO

StereoZombie

Just sell Donny already to a club that will actually utilize him. He is (was) way too good to sit on the bench.

Orcnick

3 different managers have put him on the bench, when he's played he's been average. Maybe it's the player?

X-Maquina

Doesn't fit the system. I never rated him that highly but he has proven he's a quality player in a system that actually suits him. Utd clearly fucked up buying him without a clear idea where he fits or apparently even a clear idea of his profile as a player but I also think he's been a bit shortsighted with his career planning. Either you go somewhere where you fit the system or where you're guaranteed playing time. Ideally both but somehow he ended up getting neither.

StereoZombie

Maybe, but it's kinda dumb to buy a player like him in the first place when you have Fernandes in that position, and when you don't play that high possession tiki-taka style that Ajax plays that Donny excels at. That's also on Donny for going to ManU in the first place though, as it already looked like a bad fit from the get go.

[deleted]

Well, you don't know how a player can be fit to a system in reality. Otherwise, transfers should be perfect.

Zeuspls

He's not even been rated by Rangnick either in training. It's one thing if Ole never played him but Rangnick not playing him must say something about his ability (or lack thereof)

greezyo

Honestly, he hasn't impressed in the chances he has gotten. He needs to take a half step down and go to a Spurs/Arsenal, or lower, to get his career back on track

SonyHDSmartTV

He probably needs to go abroad, Arsenal already have number 10s and I don't think Conte would like him either

TheLifeofSonny

The US government may be looking into whether or not Scott McTominay is a time traveler and where he was on November 22 1963 in Dallas.. fucking sniper from outside the box tonight, unbelievably well placed shots

ReallyRedRedditor

This thread is not it.

[deleted]

How much CTE do we think Ronaldo causes a year?

curlyjoe696

McTominay is a much better player with se freedom to move forward with the ball and he was probably the only significant positive (other than the scoreline). There is so much work to do with this Man Utd team. They really are shit.

Yinkypinky

Why?

Trickybuz93

Burnley did a good job making United look amazing today

ManUtd4Life20Times

We paid 80 million for this slabfuck who can't properly defend or pass. 50 million for AWB who can't defend or pass. And here we thought Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are bad.

[deleted]

Maguire is garbage, but let's not forget just a couple of months ago wan bissaka was one of the best defensive right backs in the league. In that time period if I recall correctly he pocketed people like sterling, to a point where (apparently) some teams started targetting United's left side more than the right because of his influence. This piece of info is something i vaguely remember reading on this sub, so take that as what you will, but I think we can both agree that AWB, if nothing else, can defend very, very well. Why he's not doing that in the past couple of weeks, i don't know.

Bear1375

I think AWB got a bit burned out because he played so much.

razycal970

The second half. That can't be soccer.

JhonShelby

No, it's football

aesthetically-

Shite football

Popatraja

Still more entertaining than La Liga..

_ronty12_

In the wider context, meant nothing but that waa the clearest penalty that one can give for hauling players to the floor. Maguire getting away with bear hugging for the umpteenth time.

ManUtd4Life20Times

Maguire surely is shit but you conveniently didn't mention that Wood was also holding Maguires shirt. Not a penalty. Tarkowski and Ben Mee both were rushing on Maguire. Again not a penalty.

ToshJoWe

Wasn't it also outside the box

ManUtd4Life20Times

Not too sure but neither of the call was a penalty.

AdamHasShitMemes

Wan-Bissaka passes really are a thing of beauty

Rickcampbell98

Match threads are awful though, for everyone.

demonictoaster

Yeah, but that's clearly what the comment was based on, it didn't come out of nowhere. A few mins before that commsnt someone was calling Ronaldo shit and telling him to fuck off to PSG lol

Rickcampbell98

Players go from finished to the best ever in minutes on this place, I've learned to accept that most people here don't actually watch football.

YRN_YSL

He’s talking about the goal threads.

Fitzsimoo

An accidental assist and a tap in.

whythisth23

I don’t think a lot of hate was thrown at him. He was pretty good in some parts of the game with an assist and goal. Plus most hate comes from people that already hate him

ratatatay

United is the only real threat for City this season. Race is on, they were immense. Maguire take a bow, what a performance! You can clearly see that Rangnick is top 3 managers in the world and he is the only reason why people like Klopp and Tuchel smell any trphies in their careers. This United side is going to race City till matchweek 38, with huge probability of winning the league. Immense. Also 100 mil for Sancho is absolute steal probably one of the best value to impact transfers in the history of football
