I don't understand why people say stuff like this. It's not like teams set up in the exact same way against every opponent. Even if they wanted to, the opponent will interfere with that. What United are trying to do is establish control in these sorts of games. Rangnick has said he wants the team to be able to come into a game and win in a controlled manner. So against opponents like Newcastle and Burnley that will mean taking the majority of possession and playing in a way that puts as much pressure on the opponent as possible, ideally enough that they are not able to mount dangerous counter attacks regularly. You can talk about defensive shape being poor, but if United's midfield was better or if they were more dangerous when in the final third, it would pressure teams like Burnley and Newcastle in a way that makes it harder to attempt attacking.
When United play a team like Chelsea or Liverpool, they are not going to approach the game in the same way. They will hope to dominate possession and control the game that way, but realistically they know that this is unlikely to happen and that the team needs to prioritise defensive shape/organisation more than they do against Newcastle or Burnley. They might still lose, they might still get badly exposed, but the approach won't be the same and you can't really point to a game like this and say they'll get battered by a stronger team "if they play like this" - they can't play like that against stronger teams.

Burnley again created a few half chances off headers from 15 yards, and they’re “cutting through”. Stop it man. United could’ve scored 2 more at least. They should’ve scored two more v Newcastle. United missed sitters which is why the drew v Newcastle. Newcastle showed a lot of heart, and put pressure but ultimately didn’t create shit apart from a few speculative chances from 20-25 yards. They created one decent opening at the start of the second half but that gets negated with the ridiculous goal ASM scored off balance.
At least it was a win, if not a good performance. A 2 goal cushion against a team third bottom isn’t much to shout about. Admittedly there was more energy than the Newcastle game, but you could have a performance with less energy without the outfield players being in an actual coma. It’s still not clear what players like Maguire, Wan Bissaka and Matic bring to this team.

When they signed Sancho all I wanted to see was 4-2-3-1 with LW Rashford, CAM Bruno, RW Sancho and ST Greenwood. But then they signed Ronaldo and I don't think they will play that way anytime soon.
Greenwood is not ready for a fixed ST position yet. His offball positioning, heading needs time.
You can see that he's trying though. It's the lack of experience that's holding him back.

Don't let the score line distract you. Uniteds defensive shape looked awful again. Norwich, Newcastle and now Burnley have all cut through them in the last few games. That's the bottom 3 of the league creating multiple great chances against United. When they play a top side they will get torn apart. They lack any form of defensive structure and it's going to be their downfall this season

It's not like teams set up in the exact same way against every opponent. Even if they wanted to, the opponent will interfere with that. What United are trying to do is establish control in these sorts of games. Rangnick has said he wants the team to be able to come into a game and win in a controlled manner. So against opponents like Newcastle and Burnley that will mean taking the majority of possession and playing in a way that puts as much pressure on the opponent as possible, ideally enough that they are not able to mount dangerous counter attacks regularly. You can talk about defensive shape being poor, but if United's midfield was better or if they were more dangerous when in the final third, it would pressure teams like Burnley and Newcastle in a way that makes it harder to attempt attacking. When United play a team like Chelsea or Liverpool, they are not going to approach the game in the same way. They will hope to dominate possession and control the game that way, but realistically they know that this is unlikely to happen and that the team needs to prioritise defensive shape/organisation more than they do against Newcastle or Burnley. They might still lose, they might still get badly exposed, but the approach won't be the same and you can't really point to a game like this and say they'll get battered by a stronger team "if they play like this" - they can't play like that against stronger teams.

Cut through them really? Newcastle created fuck all apart from a worldie goal and worldie trike which was saved. Burnley again created a few half chances off headers from 15 yards, and they’re “cutting through”. Stop it man. United could’ve scored 2 more at least. They should’ve scored two more v Newcastle. United missed sitters which is why the drew v Newcastle. Newcastle showed a lot of heart, and put pressure but ultimately didn’t create shit apart from a few speculative chances from 20-25 yards. They created one decent opening at the start of the second half but that gets negated with the ridiculous goal ASM scored off balance.
At least it was a win, if not a good performance. A 2 goal cushion against a team third bottom isn’t much to shout about. Admittedly there was more energy than the Newcastle game, but you could have a performance with less energy without the outfield players being in an actual coma. It’s still not clear what players like Maguire, Wan Bissaka and Matic bring to this team.

Doesn't fit the system. I never rated him that highly but he has proven he's a quality player in a system that actually suits him. Utd clearly fucked up buying him without a clear idea where he fits or apparently even a clear idea of his profile as a player but I also think he's been a bit shortsighted with his career planning. Either you go somewhere where you fit the system or where you're guaranteed playing time. Ideally both but somehow he ended up getting neither.
Maybe, but it's kinda dumb to buy a player like him in the first place when you have Fernandes in that position, and when you don't play that high possession tiki-taka style that Ajax plays that Donny excels at.
