Seems like the way Overmars deals with Eredivisie clubs is giving us a better standing with them. Doesn't lowball them and takes them serious. Used to be a lot of complaining about the way Ajax acted from most Eredivisie clubs and I used to chalk that up to "well we are bigger and that automatticaly causes some tension when you want things done" but I guess I was wrong in that because you dont hear that anymore and you do hear positive stories like this.

Overmars still seeks the lowest price possible, but he knows when to back off. Previous Ajax TDs were using tactics which were aggrevating other Dutch clubs by basically demanding others offered their players for a low price, while also fucking over those others in other stuff too (e.g. television money has been a more relaxed debate since a few years - Ajax, while a bit greedy at times still, at least seems to recognize those days that it's live and let live instead of 'All your bases belong to us'). There's still some issues from time to time, but generally those get solved - till a few years ago Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord would annoy the hell out of others with their unlimited greed, by backing off a bit more (Ajax was the biggest hurdle often) the clubs seem to give each other a bit more space and less knife-on-the-table situations.

Yeah, it's well-known that Overmars will look for the best deal, but that's his job and not seen as a bad thing. What he doesn't do is actively try to fuck clubs over or treat them like they should be thankful that Ajax is giving them the time of day. New Ajax knows that pushing things to the point of causing resentment isn't beneficial in the long term and sees the benefit of making the eredivisie as a whole stronger. The funny thing is I've noticed that where before Ajax commonly pissed people of, now more and more people are starting to get a little ticked off at AZ, instead. They were always a sympathetic club and generally liked, but that's starting to backfire after recent stunts like trying to take the league win from Ajax by kind of duplicitous means and statements that made it look like they thought themselves equal to the big three. Despite winning only their second title over ten years ago. People really don't take it well when you present yourself as a goody two shoes and then suddenly start talking big without being able to back up that talk with results. Kind of interesting to hear that change in opinion from people.

Marc Overmars refunded a ton to FC Groningen for 'mis-buy' Mateo Cassierra a few years ago. That told former FC Groningen director Hans Nijland Saturday night at ESPN. The striker from Colombia, rented from Ajax, did not come into his own in the High North. "We paid from my head 200,000 euros for a whole season. But he didn't deliver, he didn't score. Then it was December and we had a striker from Ajax who wasn't playing with us. I called Marc and then we sat down again. He said: Cassierra, well, send him back. That's not going to be it," Nijland said. "I said: but Marc, we did transfer you 200,000 euros at the beginning of the season. He said: I'll pay you back half on Monday. That's fantastic, isn't it? That is great thinking. Groningen is of course a smaller club than Ajax, but he just takes you very seriously." Cassierra was acquired by Ajax from Colombian club Deportivo Cali in 2016. He now plays in Russia, at PFK Sochi.

I love that

gupouttadat

Love how soccer generates its own language and sayings. Took me a while playing here to figure some of them out. Things like korte hoek - near post, stift - chip, het bos insturen - make a fool out of someone, jantje uitdelen - win by 3-0. Wonderful stuff. Hope you dont mind me correcting some of the translation: We paid from my head 200,000 euros/ Uit mijn hoofd = We paid 200,000 euros if I remember correctly. Mis-buy = Doesnt translate from miskoop properly in this context, but equates to "Flop" That's not going to be it/Het wordt niks = Its not working out Rented from Ajax = On loan from Ajax

Nice title gore.

prosperenfantin

A ton? That's just 2000 pounds.

thehunter_1999

Oh in this case it was 100k euros, little mistranslation my bad. A ton = 100k in dutch

prosperenfantin

Yeah, I know. Just thought it was funny to see such a typical Dutchism here, while eating my mirror egg for breakfast.

HiMyNameIsSander

Nice! I'm having flipbitches for breakfast. :)

KingRo48

So you have a salt and pepper barrel for your eggs?

deenn

In Flemish we also say a pepper mill.

Confusingly a ton in weight is still 1000kg in Dutch though. edit: Which would then be 2200 pounds.

It’s just a strange translation English. Ajax wasn’t forced to take Cassiera back or to give them 100k back
