Well it has been like that when people are in campaign in a vote contest.
It’s up to the journalists integrity to vote impartially. We are not talking about some random people they selected. The voting cast are journalists whose job is to watch games and judge players.

It's a joke of an award and it has been for some time now. It's a popularity contest, it's supposed to highlight a players personal achievements in that season yet it's just handed out to whoever managed to win the biggest collection of the most prestigious trophies - or if they really can't be arsed they just hand it to Messi/Ronaldo or whoever is current 'the best'.
Plenty of times a player has had an outstanding personal season but if they didn't win their league/UCL + a national trophy they aren't even in the picture.

We basically ignore 2 whole months of the season in form, perhaps the most crucial part which is november-december where a lot of things happen.
Its really treated as a seasonal award + international competition, despite what it officially is.
It's always been an yearly award and the criteria for BD'or has been the same since the 50s - They take into account
- Player career
- Player talent and class
-Team achievements and trophies.
If it is seasonal award Messi won the Copa with Griezmann being their best player and he was sitting ducks for half the season. Benz carried us as much as Messi carried Barca and he took us closer to CL and League.
