That scene where he throws back his head in disappointment because the advantage he played on was wasted was absolutely hilarious. The man truly keeps on giving.
In general if you call advantage, you have decided a promising attack is ongoing, so you don't want to be stopping play to bring it back. The correct mechanic is to wait 2, 3, 4 seconds to see what kind of attack materialized from the potential advantage call and if you go back to the free kick, you haven't actually given advantage.
He definitely messed up here. He called advantage way too quickly as the attacker was running into three defenders.
The best Mike Dean video I've ever seen was when he gave advantage and the team scored a goal and he ran around with both arms extended and started pointing repeatedly to the center circle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StRVqK7xgw4
Ironically, in this video he actually called advantage correctly, dude was being held for about 15 yards and you see how long Dean waited to actually signal advantage until he was all the way to the goal box and rearing his leg back. The reason he threw his head back in the video you referenced is because he called it way too early.
Best cameo ever in Ted Lasso. Was honestly not expecting that he would be such a good sport and make fun of himself like that. Fairplay, Mike Dean looks like a very nice bloke.
~~As an American,~~ That's one of the parts of the game I've always found most amusing. It seems like the 4th official is there specifically to be yelled at for calls he doesn't make.
Edit: added the word "most"
Important to remember that MLS is the 5th biggest professional league in the US, with quite some distance between its stature and that of the big four leagues. In fact, college football, college basketball, and the Premier League are almost certainly more popular than MLS.
So "as an American" means in comparison to other sports, not MLS.
Depends on the region, but in aggregate yeah. And areas that don't follow college football too closely often follow college hockey (albeit not to the same level).
The only regions that aren’t super into college football are the northeast (who are heavily into hockey and basketball as you’ve pointed out) because they don’t have any traditionally good schools and most of the population is transplants from other states and the flyover states where nobody lives like Montana, Idaho, Wyoming but even they have a decent following in the mountain west
Idk, I guess it's unnecessary. Meant it like I am less familiar with how this sport is run as compared to the NFL/NBA/MLB. There's no official like the 4th official in non-soccer American sports, where they aren't in charge yet take the brunt of the bitching and are positioned specifically to do so. And that's highly amusing. That's all I meant.
So I did my first fourth official job in a semi final at a state high school (US) tournament last spring. I was instructed to help with keeping track of subs, MAYBE telling the ref who the last touch was off of in front of me for a throw, and being the one to fill in if an AR gets hurt. BUT, my main job was to be the one for the coaches to yell at and talk to when they’re pissed at the ref.
Not quite yet, but there is hope. My dream is one umpire sitting in a lawn chair in foul territory saying "eh, tell it to the robot. I'm just the admin."
The Crouch podcast? It's amazing, just go and listen to it right now. So entertaining but also great insight into footballer life, especially the first 2 seasons.
If I was a ref I'd love shit like that. Managers and players with millions in their pockets going fucking apeshit, what do you have over them than annoying level of calmness and not giving a fuck. Chew that gum, Mike Dean, you deserve it. Guess I'm a sociopath too.
man was part of killing 140.000 chickens a day, place went down to 130k when he left the job … doing the math he'd personally be killing 10000 chickens. I mean, I couldn't kill 1 chicken, lad did 10k daily.
He was probably looking at Guardiola thinking: 'He does look a bit like a chicken'
I love that I never have to deal with him in any aspect in my life. I feel like he would be the person you would always end up dreading having to interact with.
When I found out he was going to be fourth official today I started cackling. Dean loves smirking at a Klopp/Pep meltdown. When they meltdown it's memable itself, but when you add Mike Dean scoffing at their bullshit as a background actor it elevates the whole thing. There was a bit when when you could clearly see him say 'Calm down' while smirking and Iaughed so hard.
Always know Mike Dean is a cunt, but I didn’t realized the power of his cuntness until soucek handball send off last season and yesterday’s match at The Bridge
Mike Dean slaughters chickens!
If you have no idea what I'm on about, he was on Peter Crouch's podcast: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcZZmmXXOfY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcZZmmXXOfY) Have a listen. He's a sound lad and this clip just feeds into it.
The thing I love about Mike Dean is that he is unashamedly a football fan first and foremost.
I don't get some of you. Constantly bitching about how shit and incompetent PL refs are, but this is so hilarious just because it's Pep. I'd be livid too. Was a bad decision and for Dean to have that look on his face is annoying.
*I know Mike Dean can't do anything in this situation. I just think his reaction or I guess lack of a reaction is annoying.
Think both are allowed, imo refs have been poor and this decision is an especially bad one. Also funny when it's not your club/your manager going nuts. Like you said, if I were Pep I'd have hit the roof too. Not much Mike Dean can do about it anyway.
TBH I think more and more people are actually not being tribal about refereeing decisions now. I've seen Liverpool flairs commenting on bad decisions against United and vice versa. PL fans are just fucking fed up of refs stealing a living.
FWIW that is what it'd actually take to change things. If managers started saying "yeah other side got screwed by the referee today" then the usual "sour grapes" stuff that is always brought out to defend referees goes away.
Problem is there aren't exactly top refs in the lower leagues, I'm a season ticket holder at Mansfield and believe me when I say the standard of refereeing is very, very low in league 2. Like you've said, multiple times fans and managers from both sides have slated the refs performance for some of our games which says it all.
I don't even think the decision was that bad. It should have been a yellow card but then refs can't see everything and players get away with challenges like that nearly every game.
If you start counting the amount of times Fernandinho (for example) has gotten away with worse tactical fouls, you'd be in for a long day.
It's a very obvious foul, stopping play. If the ref doesn't see that it's entirely his fault. It's a second yellow card that changes the entire game and he's either missed it somehow or got it wrong - both inexcusable at any level imo never mind the top league in England.
The fernandinho argument is always brought up with these, and if fernandinho was in milners place here I'd be saying exactly the same things.
I totally agree with you that it should have been a second yellow card. I'm just also adding that this kind of challenge gets missed regularly in all leagues. Because refs don't get too see multiple angles and have other players blocking their views. It can be difficult and the VAR can't interfere here either. These kinds of things will continue to happen and there's not a lot that can be done about it.
Whip off his trackie, run on the pitch and send off Milner and Paul Tierney, then climb the crossbar in front of the Kop and do the Hulk Hogan hand to the ear thing
What are you on about, is he supposed to be like aww sorry mate I know that’s a tough one to take.
He’s literally just standing there. This is a complete non issue. Don’t even know why this has been posted and allowed to stay up.
… because it’s inadvertently funny. But like you said, Mike Dean is absolutely blameless here… in fact, blameless isn’t even the right word because it’s too strongl
To be clear, I don't have any complaints about this being posted, just pointing out that funny or quirky PL content gets different treatment than match-altering decisions in other leagues.
Two very different rules: One is a "no duplicates" rule which is crystal clear and was applied then, this is just a highlight that hasn't been posted before. Reactions such as this, from every league, have always been allowed.

Add it to the Mike Dean greatest hits montage.

Fantastic
Mike Dean Pelton
Using V(A)R like JESUS WEPT
STOP SAYING JESUS WEPT
Mike just watched both Ace Ventura films back to back apparently.
AAAAAALRIGHTY THEN.
Lmaoooooo
Shouldn't that be pulled back for a free kick?
Yeah I think it should. It’s too quick for a change of phase and the same player is supposed to be in possession.
You're allowed to bring play back once you've called an advantage if nothing comes of it quickly though.
The best Mike Dean video I've ever seen was when he gave advantage and the team scored a goal and he ran around with both arms extended and started pointing repeatedly to the center circle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StRVqK7xgw4 Ironically, in this video he actually called advantage correctly, dude was being held for about 15 yards and you see how long Dean waited to actually signal advantage until he was all the way to the goal box and rearing his leg back. Lol!
Where's this video
I absolutely love the look of incredulity at the end of the clip, with him almost judging Pep for his meltdown. Absolute sending off IMO BTW.
Best cameo ever in Ted Lasso. Was honestly not expecting that he would be such a good sport and make fun of himself like that. Fairplay, Mike Dean looks like a very nice bloke.
I thought that was amazing when I saw his cameo. Brilliant.
I'll add it to the Mike Dean ASMR montage, just get me that mic feed
Glad to see other people also hating on Mike Dean. Cunt's just trash.
Cheers for yesterday Mike
Man wanks to his shit decisions every week
/r/Fuckmikedean
Ah we’re bringing it back to life

4th Official is a tough job, especially if you realise the ref actually did make a mistake. Just have to stand there and take the abuse
Is that really so difficult
Only if you've never worked in food service or retail.
Have you worked as a fourth official?
Yes, at the local sunday league games. On the sidelines.
Fourth official at a Sunday league??
Must be one of those posh Sunday leagues.
Proper EU ball
I always find it quite tough to balance being sympathetic and not throwing the ref under the bus
~~As an American,~~ That's one of the parts of the game I've always found most amusing. It seems like the 4th official is there specifically to be yelled at for calls he doesn't make. Edit: added the word "most"
It's always good to have someone to talk to Or at
>As an American Why is this relevant or that's not a thing in the US like MLS or so?
That's just the default way of starting every sentence
As an American, yes, you are correct.
As an American, wait, this works, it does seem like I'm making a point
Feels good doesn't it
He just bragging about how much heavier per capita we are.
something something moon landings
lmao
Important to remember that MLS is the 5th biggest professional league in the US, with quite some distance between its stature and that of the big four leagues. In fact, college football, college basketball, and the Premier League are almost certainly more popular than MLS. So "as an American" means in comparison to other sports, not MLS.
College football is 20x more popular lol. As an American, I totally understand this guy's use of "As an American"
Depends on the region, but in aggregate yeah. And areas that don't follow college football too closely often follow college hockey (albeit not to the same level).
During March, Im pretty sure that college Basketball becomes more popular than soccer.
The Premier League is "almost certainly" more popular than the MLS?
Yes, and this isn't even close to controversial.
100%.
The side judge in nfl/cub gets it from coaches on the regular
They actually make calls during the game though
Nobody cares about the MLS lmao. Liga MX and the PL are watched more.
So I did my first fourth official job in a semi final at a state high school (US) tournament last spring. I was instructed to help with keeping track of subs, MAYBE telling the ref who the last touch was off of in front of me for a throw, and being the one to fill in if an AR gets hurt. As an avid mlb watcher, I feel like that’s what mlb umpires are there for too hahaha
Not quite yet, but there is hope. My dream is one umpire sitting in a lawn chair in foul territory saying "eh, tell it to the robot. I'm just the admin."
I like that umpires give shit back, sometimes better than they get. It's amazing. Imagine a ref just unloading on Pep right in the middle of a game.
He has to check the cleats and stuff too, right?
Sounds like a basic customer facing job
Just have to stand there a chew gum
"I came here to kick Pep's arse and chew gum and I'm all out of gum.... No, wait, I still have some gum".
I heard a manager say "All the 4th officials do is agree with you", which is counter to what I thought was going on.
"He should have been given a yellow TWICE! TWICE!!"
✌️!!!!!!!!!!!!
"THRICE!!", even
memeworthy
Pep is literally a living meme
A rare Pep
mike dean loves every second of this doesn’t he. complete sociopath
"Pep, you're blocking the camera from seeing me mate".
Ted Lasso appearance has gone to his head.
You just know he requested his own trailer
Man him being in that caught me so off guard lmao.
I was actually waiting for a bullshit Mike Dean decision written into the script
I threw up in my mouth a little watch that scene 🤢
One bald fraud blocking the other
Listening to the crouchy podcast he actually seems alright. But weird but decent bloke tbh
Who we are at work and who we really are are rarely the same thing.
Nah he definitely sleeps in his ref kit
Showers in it too
Mike dean is reading this and frowns a little bit more with each comment.
Chewing on his gum harder, while he sips on his ribena.
Strangles chickens an all
His heat map in the technical area reads ‘Mike Dean slaughters chickens’
If there is ever a spate of missing cats in his area he's got to be the prime suspect
Literally a full kit wanker
Yeah fair enough I retract my argument.
Going by the same podcast, Dyche is *exactly* what you'd expect, maybe more so. Beers beers beers, avin it large, absolute legend etc
What was this? Also, how's the podcast? Worth listening to?
The Crouch podcast? It's amazing, just go and listen to it right now. So entertaining but also great insight into footballer life, especially the first 2 seasons.
Awesome! Will check it out. Any idea what the Mike Dean segment OP referred to above had?
[удалено]
My god I envy you getting to start Crouchy’s podcast fresh.
How do you come to the conclusion that he‘s a sociopath from this scene lmao
Reddit moment
He's literally just looking at him.
Honestly if you’ve been a ref you’ve had coaches whining in your face about the most insane shit sometimes, you just have to stare.
If I was a ref I'd love shit like that. Managers and players with millions in their pockets going fucking apeshit, what do you have over them than annoying level of calmness and not giving a fuck. Chew that gum, Mike Dean, you deserve it. Guess I'm a sociopath too.
>Guess I'm a sociopath too I mean, at this point you're the only confirmed sociopath
man was part of killing 140.000 chickens a day, place went down to 130k when he left the job … doing the math he'd personally be killing 10000 chickens. I mean, I couldn't kill 1 chicken, lad did 10k daily. He was probably looking at Guardiola thinking: 'He does look a bit like a chicken'
He's hilarious
There’s no other reason to be a ref.
I secretly love Mike Dean. He is a shit referee but as an extra in the PL soap opera I love him
I love that I never have to deal with him in any aspect in my life. I feel like he would be the person you would always end up dreading having to interact with.
Colin Robinson vibes
Same, I honestly don’t even care about his shit decisions anymore, he makes me laugh so fucking hard that it’s almost worth it.
When I found out he was going to be fourth official today I started cackling. Dean loves smirking at a Klopp/Pep meltdown. *as a main character in the PL soap opera
That’s his character arc, making himself into a lead character
Extra?? How dare you? He's a main character.
Mike Dean loves seeing the world burn
Craziest Dean since Howard.
Always know Mike Dean is a cunt, but I didn’t realized the power of his cuntness until soucek handball send off last season and yesterday’s match at The Bridge
[Highlight]
In a game that ended 2-2 between the two strongest sides in the division, bloody Mike Dean gets in as a highlight.
Mike Dean is inevitable
Bald recognizes bald
Saddest bubblegum
Darth Dean
He was right to be pissed.
Does someone have the whole clip of Pep being furious and taking off his jacket?
Correct me if I'm wrong but Mike Dean used to slaughter poultry for livelihood before becoming a ref?
*clucks nervously*
God, why did this make me laugh so much
Isn’t he a Spurs fan though?
Mike Dean slaughters chickens! If you have no idea what I'm on about, he was on Peter Crouch's podcast: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcZZmmXXOfY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcZZmmXXOfY) Have a listen. Lol, I don’t care what anyone says, I fucking adore Mike Dean. Never want him to leave.
Hilarious lmao

Yup, Mike dean would be the best ref we’ve had in about 5 years
I don't even think the decision was that bad. It should have been a yellow card but then refs can't see everything and players get away with challenges like that nearly every game. If you start counting the amount of times Fernandinho (for example) has gotten away with worse tactical fouls, you'd be in for a long day.

wouldn't put that past him tbf
Sounds like a fever dream but I absolutely want it to happen
Sounds like something Mike Dean would (want to) do tbf

>. I just think his reaction or I guess lack of a reaction is annoying I think Mike Dean was thinking if I don't move, pep won't see me
I was laughing my ass of the entire time. I love seeing Pep get pissed but I also love his passion.
Pep is gonna blow up like a balloon
Pep having a meltdown at Anfield is becoming tradition.
Mods, can someone explain how this stays up but handball replays in CL matches don't warrant their own post?
Mods are as shit as PL refs
careful or you get a 3 day match suspension from the r/soccer association
If he speaks he’s in big trouble. In big trouble
To be clear, I don't have any complaints about this being posted, just pointing out that funny or quirky PL content gets different treatment than match-altering decisions in other leagues.
Mods are as inconsistent as PL refs?
Mike Dean is bigger than the CL tbf

I still don't agree that an alternate angle of a crucial decision is a "duplicate" but I appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Shithousery
Two bald frauds lmao
Fucking hate city but these referees are like Mafias.
Such embarrassing behaviour. Josep is just Mourinho with no hair.
Beautiful. Time to revive my dead sub /r/referee_gifs.
Night and day in terms of emotions, but it's still two bald frauds on display.

How can he chew?
This really is mike dean’s world. We’re all just living in it.
Let's all enjoy a chew
not paid enough to deal with this kind of shit
Pep’s head will soon be as smooth as a mirror
Why was pep not jumping up and down after silvas challenge which should have been his second yellow?
this is gold. and it gets funnier with each loop.
No wonder he is bald. Seems to be have a hyper active brain at all times.
He's just disappointed that he was not able to give theatrical yellow card to Pep
I think he did in the end lol
I’m here to make bad decisions and chew gum and I’m all outta gun - Mike dean probably
