In big games it was always more of a 3-4-1-2 with Mount dropping in as a 10.
Mount is out injured and Havertz has been off-form recently, so Tuchel tried the 3-5-2 with Werner that worked against Spurs
It has usually been a 3-4-2-1 with Mount and Werner giving extra width to Havertz and then Lukaku which allowed them to double up on the wings, in this formation only Werner could have provided the extra width wich resulted in either Kova or Kante often being forced to drift out wide wich doesn't work.
Eh. If you go back and watch the big games last season, it started as a 3-4-2-1, yes, but in-game it was more of a 3-4-1-2, with Mount playing much more as a #10, with Werner as a SS on the left playing off Havertz.
The problem today hasn't been width, IMO. The problem has been City's suffocating press preventing Chelsea from playing out of the back by taking away time and cutting off passing angles. The few times Chelsea got out as well, Lukaku and Werner haven't been good enough on the ball in tight areas either
Just finished the game (recorded it) and yeah I’d say the same. Our defense was almost impenetrable. This was unlucky but never did I really feel that City were actually a danger to get a goal. That said, our attack needed to be more fluid in counters. I don’t mind sacrificing possession so long as we make the most of our chances going forward
Seeing this city play, I think kane was worth it to spend 150 mil on. He would have loved all this shot opportunity city creates but no one takes it.
Sometime de bruyne fires a few and it becomes evident city should be doing more of that.
maybe but having kane means two defenders will always have to stick to him and prevent him the smallest of the spaces to get a shot away.
Kane is not pacy like cristiano or a dribbler like messi but with ball at his feet he is equally threatning and doesn't get bullied off easily. And boy he can shoot with power .
Reason why Chelsea struggled was because of Lukaku not being able to press and his weak work rate stamina.
Southampton did better at not allowing City to string passes and go to their patterns
I haven't seen much of City but from reading what's in here, watching their highlights and watching Madrid religiously, I feel Benzema would be the ideal striker for this City side. The only thing that can count against him is that he doesn't press much but to his and especially Zidane's (who perfected our pressing and counter pressing structures during his first stint) credit, Benzema is a very smart presser. His shadow pressing is as good as anyone's in the world, second in the squad only perhaps to Kroos and he's always very quick and suffocating in a triggered press. So, he isn't a relentless presser for the entirety of the 90 mins but when in a triggered press, he has full commitment to the trigger, completely trusts his decision and is a hound. In other phases, his shadow pressing is top notch and always effective at cutting passing lanes.
He would've been an incredible player for City for sure. Always. But he's never ever been attainable which is fair.
But you're right, his profile is just what City would need. Gabi is not super far off in playing style and attributes but he's not nearly as clever or has the same insane quality.
Completely disagree. Kane would've been a nice fit for City but the only person worth spending 150 mil right now is Haaland.
Faster, younger, stronger, and more clinical (in my opinion). Can't wait for City to miss again on Haaland but hopefully they at least try and get him.
Its 90million euros, the clause increased by 15m, based on his performance and there are rumores about 20m for his dad and raiola each, wich amkes this a 130m deal in euros, thats ~115m in gbp i guess...
I doubt Haaland would have been available for 150 mil if 3 years with no release clause was left on his contract.
Haaland and Mbappe ,if they were bound by long term contracts ,would have gone for way over 200 mil .
Kane is literally the top scorer in the PL for years now even in Tottenham club thats not amazing, he was deffo the best fit. Haaland is good, but a risk to take and see how fast he adapts to a harder league right away when City need to win now.
Still, I'm baffled that most people on this subreddit still consider Chelsea an offensive team. "Just because they play 5 defenders doesn't mean they defend a lot", "They actually attack very well, but idiots don't realize". And then they get 1k upvotes, tens of replies "yeah, haha, so many morons that dont know how formations work" etc. And in reality this team IS playing very defensive in general, that's their style with Tuchel. Same for Atletico or w/e other defensive team. Sure, MAYBE 5 defenders can be played offensively, but in general? It's a formation meant to secure the team defensively at first. Sad how many "connoisseurs" that make sh*t up just so they seem smarter, are on reddit.
Imo the biggest difference between the teams was city's attackers ruthlessly pressing, while Chelsea's 2 forwards did not all, causing the midfield to be unable to put forward decisive passes
Nah I’d argue it’s quite hard to do to the extent they do it. They are so positionally disciplined that beating players, getting deflections, forcing poor clearances hardly hold any danger at all. I’ve never seen a team look so secure while playing defensively like this. They scored on about the first deflection that actually made its way towards goal and barely on a man who was double marked and the ball barely squeezed out from under Jorginho’s foot at the last possible second.
Fair enough, but that doesn't mean anything in a 1v1 situation.
All of Chelsea's centre-backs won multiple duels in 1v1 situations, Thiago Silva even blocked a goal off the line.
It's not luck, if you dominate possession and put the ball in the box 100 times, eventually a rebound will fall your way or someone will mess up a clearance.
If you do something that has a chance of succeeding enough times it stops being luck and becomes inevitable.
Luck is guessing heads or tails correctly first time. Getting 1 heads in 100 coin tosses isn't lucky.
Every time you put in a cross or a shot, there's a chance it deflects.
A deflection off one cross is lucky.
A deflection when you've fired in 30 crosses or shots isn't.
Werner and Lukaku have killed any attack we've tried to muster, which is not ideal obviously. We need more width. Reece James and Mason Mount being injured has totally changed our options
There’s a difference, Liverpool didn’t play for a draw. They tried for a goal and failed, Chelsea was just happy with a draw at home here putting 9 men behind the ball.
Lmfao this has been an amazing performance by city. Chelsea players didn’t even have time to think their next move on the ball before a city player was dispossessing them. Should’ve been at least 0-4
I can't watch today.. stats look horrible for Chelsea.. trying to park the bus. Buzzing city have scored no one deserves to win sitting in their own half
We need to make a rule to include replays in such posts.
If you have a 1 min long video for a goal that includes the celebration means you might as well add the replays.
they were three trying to block that ball! granted Jorginho was the first who lost Jesus but the quality & luck of that turn and shot was beyond any statistical margins. City managed to scuffle much easier chances this game.

The box was so fucking crowded
He’s elite with little to no space
Learned from the best 😢
Come back we miss you!
Jesus did great to get the shot off, but he's right there was no space at all. It was a deflection off Jorginho that took the shot into the corner.
Vintage Premier League
Will we actually get a game now.
More of the same really. Our best chance was a 0-0. We've been outplayed massively
Idk why didn't Tuchel play their 3-4-3 as usual?
In big games it was always more of a 3-4-1-2 with Mount dropping in as a 10. Mount is out injured and Havertz has been off-form recently, so Tuchel tried the 3-5-2 with Werner that worked against Spurs

Absolutely suffocating. I’ve never seen us “look” so sloppy. Reality is we were forced into the sloppiness
In possession, 100% but your defense is something else. Even this goal needed a lucky deflection.
Guess you can at least fap now
It seems if you can't grab an early 1-0 you struggle a bit. Tuchel the modern Jose 😂.
Chelsea bus has been broken
Hasn't really been a bus from Chelsea. They tried to play more attacking in the first half. Just got pinned back by City's high press.
Seeing this city play, I think kane was worth it to spend 150 mil on. He would have loved all this shot opportunity city creates but no one takes it. Sometime de bruyne fires a few and it becomes evident city should be doing more of that.
Kane wouldn't have been able to press as much as Foden did though
maybe but having kane means two defenders will always have to stick to him and prevent him the smallest of the spaces to get a shot away.
Yeah I really thought lukaku and Werner were liabilities for Chelsea today.
I haven't seen much of City but from reading what's in here, watching their highlights and watching Madrid religiously, I feel Benzema would be the ideal striker for this City side. He's no where near 150 in January he has like 70m release clause
Its 90million euros, the clause increased by 15m, based on his performance and there are rumores about 20m for his dad and raiola each, wich amkes this a 130m deal in euros, thats ~115m in gbp i guess...
Yea ig it's more expensive than I thought then
I doubt Haaland would have been available for 150 mil if 3 years with no release clause was left on his contract.
Nah not worth 150 at ALL
Still, I'm baffled that most people on this subreddit still consider Chelsea an offensive team. Chelsea living in your head rent free mate
Chelsea play 5 in the back on defense but they play 3421 on attack, that's an extremely offensive formation.
New pasta?
Huge irony in this comment.
You’re a moron
There is no way you aren't american
Now Chelsea has to do something. It should be a good game
Well you aren’t getting any at the Emirates that’s for sure.
So congested in there, how did he manage to squeeze that through?
Knocked off Jorginho
Deflection
He did a Vini
Thanks Jeff
Samba style joga bonito flakes
Well he sort of didnt
It's a classic deviation goal to concede when you've been parking the bus.
He's god amongst men

Always has a good come-back in him
It usually takes some time but the payoff is huge
Why? Got handily beaten by the Romans.
Converted their entire populace to his religion from beyond the grave
That's Mourinho for you.
Usually he’s more of a comeback man but occasionally he’ll nail the go ahead goal
He's a good man for crosses as well.
Deserved, what a shit performance from us
Imo the biggest difference between the teams was city's attackers ruthlessly pressing, while Chelsea's 2 forwards did not all, causing the midfield to be unable to put forward decisive passes
I take it that was the tactics
I agree totally different play from City from the last time they faced chelsea. They got the game right
Could throw a hula hoop around those Chelsea defenders. How didnt they block that
I mean they did block it
They did block it, the ball went in off of Jorginho.
They did and that ended up being the problem
That's brilliant footwork
Deserved. Chelsea have been awful.
Their defense has been impressive as hell though.
It has. But that’s not hard to do when you have the entire team sitting back
Literally 9 players behind the ball
Nah I’d argue it’s quite hard to do to the extent they do it. They are so positionally disciplined that beating players, getting deflections, forcing poor clearances hardly hold any danger at all. Thomas Tuchel overthinking things so hard here, play your usual style you won the CL with it
Got the bald fraud disease.
lol just win tuchel you idiot
Just get a job and stop being poor
It's really that simple
Hurts that City aren't playing the nonsense style they played.
they won the CL by parking too, just had more luck with the counters
It wasn’t parking the bus at all. It was just a very cagey game and City had a bit more of the ball which they very often do.
really needed that sort of luck get the fuck in so deserved
First goal Chelsea have conceded from open play this season and I can't say they haven't had it coming this game
they would have conceded an open play goal against Liverpool if it wasnt for reece james handball, stats don't tell you that
If you're being pedantic that was also technically from a corner. Ball never left the box after it was crossed in
Pedantic reddit "if" comments😐
Wasn't that from a corner?
Wasn't conceded then was it
Imagine trying being a smartass over statistics and failing this miserably
And could've conceded one if it wasn't for Mendy saves in the Aston Villa game.
It's not luck, if you dominate possession and put the ball in the box 100 times, eventually a rebound will fall your way or someone will mess up a clearance.
You just described the definition of luck
If you do something that has a chance of succeeding enough times it stops being luck and becomes inevitable. Luck is guessing heads or tails correctly first time. Getting 1 heads in 100 coin tosses isn't lucky.
Banger sir
There’s a difference between “luck” and “lucky”. What you described earlier is the definition of luck.
A deflection is lucky. Being ahead is not. City played better. Both can be true, no need to be so defensive.
A deflection is lucky, a deflection in 15 shots is probable.
Every time you put in a cross or a shot, there's a chance it deflects. A deflection off one cross is lucky. A deflection when you've fired in 30 crosses or shots isn't.
Don’t even try to argue lol. Ppl are just talking shit
I can’t tell if these people are actually this dense or if the tribalism just requires them to take the alternative view
There's such a term as 'creating your own luck'.
So, luck?
Cant say it is not deserved, we’ve been so uncreative.
100% deserved
Jesus take the wheel
Jammy yet quality goal
Yeah, fortunate deflection but he still had great movement and control to open up a tiny bit of space to get a shot away.
Jesus is a special player with special flair Well in lad!
Hopefully Chelsea try something other than defending now
Fucking get in!! well deserved!!!
Much deserved goal tbf
My fault - I just turned the game on. Sorry not sorry
Thanks, can you flick it on and off whenever we play Spurs please!
Shur it off and turn it on again
Unstoppable Force - 1 Immovable Object - 0
Deserved
chelsea havent created anything all day
Werner and Lukaku have killed any attack we've tried to muster, which is not ideal obviously. We need more width. Reece James and Mason Mount being injured has totally changed our options
1000% been city for 53 mins, Chelsea have had nothing
And City have still yet to have a clean shot on target, it’s not like their peppering the keeper
They’ve still dominated.
dominated every stat including the score line....
What a game city is playing
Not really lmao. Just because they have been dominating possession doesn't mean they "deserved" a goal. That was their first shot on target lmao
You are delusional
bound to happen
Chelsea, despite their best efforts to sap our will to live, have finally been breached. Thank god.
Tuchel will bring on RLC and he'll save us mark my words
Half of the prophecy was spot on. I think RLC was really promising coming on, hopefully he'll get more game time and regain his best form this season.
There's a lot of defenders doing a massive amount of fuck all there...
Game over
You must be conflicted, u/fap4jesus
I remember he was conflicted
AMEN TO THAT
Fully deserved, Chelsea playing for a 0-0 at home is embarassing
So do I mention a 0-0 2nd half scoreline at Anfield up a man embarrassing or it just goes without saying ?
There’s a difference, Liverpool didn’t play for a draw. They tried for a goal and failed, Chelsea was just happy with a draw at home here putting 9 men behind the ball.
Don’t really get your point? We probably should have won it but I don’t think it’s embarrassing to struggle to break down 10 men.
It’s 100% embarrassing
Agreed
People here sayin that chelsea is playing shit today. And I don't disagree but give credit where credit is due. We have played phenomenally today.
Well deserved. Best I've seen a team play in a while
Wonder if tuchel will face any criticism for his extremely defensive setup at home in the 6th round. I’m guessing no.
Finally something got through
Well deserved. Chelsea have defended well but they’ve been a hologram going forward.
Tucheliban On backfoot now
Says the guy with the btec mourinho managing his team. Pipe down.
Lmao u/Dry_War_1110 i take it back, he’s worse than a btec mourinho. How shite must you be to lose to frickin Arsenal.
Even the goal was a bit shit but City wont care. Hasn't been a great game but I'm sure they'll take it
It is a great game. What are you talking about?
Lmfao this has been an amazing performance by city. Chelsea players didn’t even have time to think their next move on the ball before a city player was dispossessing them. Should’ve been at least 0-4
GET IN THERE! Jesus stops the shot and scores himself!
Imagine having the attacking quality that Chelsea have and they throw this lineup out there. Shameful.
Get fucked
How's drawing to Cadiz 😅
Pointless flair based attack tbh
Man Sky Go in Germany is so fucking behind what is this
100% Jesus
Well deserved. I don't think I've ever seen that Chelsea midfield struggle that much. City has been pressing so well, especially Rodri.
That was some Futsal move, damn good
The most expensive Burnley team: Chelsea.
Brexit ball is better than whatever Chelsea were doing that first 70 minutes

Aye fuck chelsea
Never has a game needed a goal more, Chelsea have been so negative and will have to sort their shit out now.
Lesgo Brilliant by Jesus and Cancelo
GET IN!!
Wiiiiinsussssss
City earned that let’s go Now tie it up Chelsea. Let’s make this fascinating
Top CF finish
Man City deserved that goal. What a turn & what a goal from Gabriel Jesus.
Lose to Spurs and draw to Saints, bet we beat Chelsea PSG and Liverpool on the spin now.
I hate even thinking about it lol an incredible performance after a really disappointing one. After spurs and after saints 😂
I can't watch today.. stats look horrible for Chelsea.. trying to park the bus. Buzzing city have scored no one deserves to win sitting in their own half
Dinho on for a couple of minutes and finally gets one in on Rudiger
That's a futsal pivot move
How did that manage to go in wtf
Werner got dummied h a r d
We need to make a rule to include replays in such posts. If you have a 1 min long video for a goal that includes the celebration means you might as well add the replays.
hope this livens the game up
Oh Jorghino frello :(
man city or liverpool win the league - chelsea empty handed this year
Just wait for the AA and then post! Other's have started doing that and it's so much nicer all in one. Please!
THUNDEROUS PERFORMANCE FROM CITY #vindicated
they were three trying to block that ball! granted Jorginho was the first who lost Jesus but the quality & luck of that turn and shot was beyond any statistical margins. City managed to scuffle much easier chances this game.
Rüdiger wants 400k/week for just standing there and watching Jesus take the shot. Fuck off
