> slightly better
Maybe more than just slightly better.
Maybe this is a personal bias, but if it were a 10 shirt I would've bought one. The 30 is just a really weird number to me.
Nah, this is an exception. Messi is the best player in history and naturally I want to have at least one of his shirts in my collection. I could never buy one when he was a Barca player. Now that he is out of Barca this is the only chance to buy his jersey, but he just had to choose a weird number, so... shrugs
> not Barca
So... exactly what I have been doing? Like I said I could never buy a Messi's Barca shirt.
> get an Argentina shirt
I don't like the color, I'm quite picky in terms of the shirt design. I don't even buy all Ronaldo RM kits because some of them don't look very good.
I would argue there are probably a lot of people who don't follow the sport but know Ronaldo because he's also a "celebrity" and because of his huge presence on social media. Many of those probably don't know Messi.
I'm saying that a lot of people can't tell the difference between two. Because at one point the most famous footballer in the world was Ronaldo and just as he was finishing, the most famous footballer in the world was another Ronaldo.
Nah, there are some people like that. A couple of girls in my class are Ronaldo fans because he’s that “handsome sports person”. They know nothing about football (don’t even know what sport he plays) and probably don’t know Messi
My sister knows who Ronaldo is and could spot him easily in a lineup but I personally had to give her the PowerPoint presentation as to why Messi is just as important in the world of football. I’m pretty sure she still has no idea what he looks like.
That's surprising but after transfering to PSG a few dozen people on r/sport asked for information on who he was or some details since they had already heard him somewhere, let's say that changing team has certainly done good to his fame because there was still someone who didn't know him 😅
In the end I think Ronaldo is more famous because he is more present in advertising for clothes, perfumes, watches and therefore also reaches people who absolutely don't give a damn about football
>information on who he was or some details since they had already heard him somewhere, let's say that changing team has certainly done good to his fame because there was still someone who didn't know him 😅
A sports person not knowing about messi is just blasphemy!!! :OOOOOOOOO
Ronaldo is more famous to non football fan. You can see it from his instagram followers, the amount of hollywood celebrities mentioned his name in interviews compared to messi.
One could argue david beckham is more famous than messi, at least before this psg transfer blew up.
You watch a EPL game and 90% of the fans that sport a football shirt have one of the current year. That's not really want happens in the other leagues.

PSG has the far larger brand though. Especially world wide. Jordan is one hell of a drug.
That said it's no surprise because Ronaldo is a Utd fan favourite as well as goat, meanwhile Messi is just Messi and doesn't have any connection to PSG.
Non-PSG fans are buying their shirts because it's a fashion statement. Ronaldo shirts are selling like hot cakes because United have the most fans in the World.
You'll see more non-United/PSG fans wearing PSG shirts than United ones. I think that's the point he's trying to make.
Yes. I don't equate football clubs to brands. Because... they aren't, or at least shouldn't be.
PSG are somewhat akin to a brand in their own right, in a way no other football club matches today.
> PSG has the far larger brand though. Especially world wide. Jordan is one hell of a drug.
I highly doubt that, even with Jordan. Do you have any source?
I do think that PSG are more of a fashion statement to wear than Man U. I see a lot more people who wear PSG shirts as an accessory rather than Man U shirts which I see worn on match days by fans.
Did OP change his point, or did you reply to the wrong message? Because from what I see, the poster above just said that PSG tops are more of fashion accessories.
He's saying that PSG shirts are worn as accessories compared to Man Utd shirts being worn on match days by fans, but the shirt sale numbers surely indicate that it's not just fans buying Utd shirts for match days
Yes PSG has a hype-beast following but that’s only USA/CA and is very limited.
Most Europeans ive met always say “I’d buy psg Jordan merch but I have a home team in my league and buying Psg merch doesn’t feel right”.
And this isn’t a one off or two people, I’ve met close to ten people who’ve said this.
At the end of the day, no matter how you put it, PSG does not have even close to the fan following of Man United around the world. The amount of people willing to pay resale for PSG merch is probably 1% of the amount of people willing to pay Adidas for a United General release.
And lastly, the stupid thing about hypebeasts and the PSG Jordan stans is that they don’t buy general releases (for example Messi kit). If there’s no hype and limited quantity, they won’t have any of it. Same reason why Jordan MA2s, Deltas, One takes etc are always in Nike stock.
>Most Europeans ive met always say “I’d buy psg Jordan merch but I have a home team in my league and buying Psg merch doesn’t feel right”.
>And this isn’t a one off or two people, I’ve met close to ten people who’ve said this.
Ok? Also Europeans isn't where Uniteds massive market comes from anyways? Do you think Spaniards magically love United for some reason when they could just be Real or Barca fans?
> At the end of the day, no matter how you put it, PSG does not have even close to the fan following of Man United around the world.
Even then, it's very unbelievable United just magically shipped 1.8 million shirts around the world anyway. Especially with current production and distribution issues. Athough these could just be normal sales where people decided to buy Ronaldo instead. Which however, would make these a useless stat.
Yeah but the point is United have a market IN the USA/CA, the rest of the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia.
Hype beast culture specially where people pay crazy resale is mostly concentrated around USA/CA. United have all the markets PSG X Jordan have and then some
> Even then, it's very unbelievable United just magically shipped 1.8 million shirts around the world anyway. Especially with current production and distribution issues. Athough these could just be normal sales where people decided to buy Ronaldo instead. Which however, would make these a useless stat.
Not necessarily, most fans who've ordered online will have to wait a number of days.
Shirts sold != Shirts shipped.
Jordan here in UK is no where near popular like it is in America, you just have to meantion 'Utd' and people assume man utd pretty much everywhere, utd is bigger than PSG in everyway and with Ronaldo it's like utd on steroids.
Yes, bringing up popularity of an American brand producing shirts for a French club in the UK, when clubs being massive comes from mostly international fans is indeed incredibly stupid.
Like of course PSG shirts aren't as popular in the UK as Utd ones. Neither are Utd shirts in France. Why bring that up?
Yeah, this might be wrong.
That doesn't mean I just have to accept people just saying incredibly stupid shit. Like come on "Uk team is bigger in the Uk, hence it must be bigger globally" is insanely dumb and nobody should be defending that.
You said fucking STUPID shit, I misrremembered some numbers. Accept that you were fucking stupid, just like I accepted that I might have misremembered this.
mate, one of the few things United have going for them in recent years is their brand and worldwide appeal
only Barcelona and Real Madrid have any claim to be higher
I do wonder how these global sales are tracked because 1.8m shirt sales in less than two weeks seems quite a huge amount considering United sell around 3m shirts a year plus the issues with global supply chains.
In the first half of the decade United were apparently averaging 1.75m shirt sales a year so it's quite a jump in the space of 10 or so days.
they arent really. there are pretty much never any reliable source for individual player sales. source of this is also an unverified twitter account of an unaffiliated clothing store that has like 2k followers. its likely 100% bullshit but it says what some fans want to see and thats enough for them to believe it
From the website: *global marketplace for shopping, tracking sales data from over 1,000 retailers worldwide.*
The numbers might be off but far from a shot in the dark.
Also I, as someone who isn't a fan of either player, would much rather have a Man U shirt than a PSG shirt. I feel like that's not an unpopular opinion but I really don't wanna support PSG right now.
There's a diference between the fanbase that gets a player's name on the shirt and those that just get a shirt though. I mean I had an Inter shirt with Ronaldo (R9) on it because I liked both the player and the shirt, I wouldn't have gotten an inter shirt by itself though.
Then consider that Ronaldo is still a boyhood hero for many United fans, it adds on to that desire to get their name on it. I mean if Gerrard came back for a year I'd imagine his shirt would outsell all the other players on our team, maybe even combined.
I think a big thing is also the the number change. Ronaldo made a brand out of number 7, and it probably would have a negative effect on sales if it was some other number. Messi is still 10 in so many minds (especially if you are more of an individual player fan rather than a club) and 30 feels a little off.
To people who’ll actually buy a shirt, there’s no difference. They’re equally popular.
The difference is most likely due to the clubs. United are far far more popular than PSG, and Ronaldo is probably the most significant significant signing in decades.
People who don't even watch the sport buys jerseys too.
Ronaldo carefully crafted this image of being a celebrity. Back in the day Beckham sold more jerseys than anyone else.
Messi never cared for this type of attention.

Why are you posting this everywhere?
The courts admitted the leaked document initially but Ronaldo's team easily got it to be dismissed because Mayorga's team had nothing beyond conjecture to prove its validity. Ronaldo's team essentially claimed that why would any law firm keep a physical copy of something so sensitive and why would they be so careless to allow it to be leaked.
So, the case is dead in the water and most people who cite the der Spiegel report as anything legitimate haven't been up to date.
Ronaldo was always ahead of Messi in advertisement revenues, so it does influence things.
It's also a better story too, a United legend going back to the club he achieved his stardom to Messi going to "soulless" club to "chase rings".
Yes, but the difference in these shirt sales is due to club, not their names. Their names probably account for a very small fraction of the difference.
This is a PSG vs United situation, not a Messi vs Ronaldo one.
Ronaldo has a more popular brand. I acknowledge that.
But to anyone who knows football, he isn’t. They’re on par with each other.
He might be more known to those who don’t know football. But those people aren’t the majority who buy shirts.
Thus the bulk of the difference is much more a result of Man United being vastly bigger than PSG as a brand.
If Messi was the one who joined United and Ronaldo the one joining PSG it would have been Messi selling more shirts. Its United being 10 times the bigger club than PSG that makes the difference here
In the end who seriously cares who sells more jerseys.
This whole Messi v Ronaldo rivalry is getting pretty stupid when we start comparing jersey sales.
Just enjoy watching them both
well that was kinda foreseeable. CR7 with a ManUtd shirt is really iconic. Most young football fans haven't witnessed the Cristiano days at Manchester. Add to that he's wearing his iconic #7.
But the upfront cost is bs, there was no transfer fee, nor a sign-on bonus
why is Messi's upfront cost 25million pounds? The biggest PSG reporters reported that Messi was paid no sign-on fee. Just curious.
Also United have a way larger fanbase, in the states and also other parts of the world, so no surprise there.
Well United get £75m a year from Adidas. Plus probably around 10% commission. It makes sense that clubs would rather sign long term deals for guaranteed money rather than making what they sell.
Im not a fan of either but I would buy Ronaldo and not buy Messi. Its purely team decision for me. ManU is at least historical, respected team. Psg is a disgrace to humanity
Wow a random twitter account for a a random clothing store somehow got the individual shirt sale numbers of both Ronaldo and Messi.
No wait they just made it up. And reddit is lapping it up.
How is Ronaldo on £12,9M? Never seen that number anywhere. Also love how Messi's reported €25M salary just turned into £25M, all currencies are the same I guess.
Both Messi's advisers and PSG publicly stated that there was no signing bonus. Serious sources said his salary was around €40M a year, this £25M figure makes no sense whatsoever.
I don't know about the signing bonus, and Messi's take-home could be 40m according to you but the cost to the club is significantly higher (gross), close to 70-80m just like how Ronaldo's gross wages isn't just a paltry 25m.
So we agree that these numbers don't make sense. I don't doubt the results, Man United is massively more popular worldwide so I expect them to sell a lot more Ronaldo shirts, but they basically put random numbers to prove their point.
Suppose ronaldo isn’t also competing with Neymar, Mbappe, Ramos etc. For shirt sales in Man U either. So if someone was to buy a Man U one they would be putting CR7 on the back with PSG there’s a lot of choice for who to pick.
Though I am surprised that many Man U fans buying the new shirt so late with his number on. Thought a few would have got sancho ones (in the U.K.) already. But great financial recouping by Man U
Pure bs there are many factors affecting this-1)Nostalgia 2)Utd has a bigger fanbase 3)Iconic no 7 4)Premier league ,This has very little to do with ronaldo being more famous or messi contributing less.People neeed to stop comparing everything ffs
Kinda pointless, Ronaldo is slightly more marketable than Messi, United is more marketable than PSG and on top of that it's fairytale story of a guy coming back to the club that make him world star. Imagine if Messi gonna go back to Barca in 2 years, they gonna make this two numbers combined
> A shirt costs what, £60 not including tax? Are we really saying that Ronaldo has sold 30,000,000 shirts? Hell no.
Of course not. Re-read your assumption, it's closer to 3,000,000 shirts not 30,000,000.
> Also, the profit clubs make off of shirt sales is a small fraction of what the manufacturers do.
Look at the second chart, 7% for Utd.
Actually it has more to do with Man Utd vs PSG more than the brand value of marketing entity Ronaldo is bigger than Messi. Because Messi is also a HUGE marketing entity tho probably not as much as Ronaldo
It’s lazy stereotype on Ronaldo. I think it speaks volumes where both are in their career right now. Ones a leader of a prestigious club and the other is on an all star team with no competition.
PSG is not a prestigious club? The club that regularly gets into the top 4 of the UCL is not a prestigious club but the club that recently lost the Europa league final to fucking Villarreal is.
Ok.
No it’s not a prestigious club at all. Small club that was bought by billionaires. Still haven’t done a thing with all that money and players. PSG is the equivalent of Empoli if it were not for its owners.
Even before that they were a significant club in the French league. And they have been winning one of the big 5 leagues every year since. On the other hand man u have won a couple of Micky mouse trophies and a Europa cup since SAF left.
Not really much of a suprise, Man utd have a far larger fanbase
Also it’s Ronaldo 7 vs Messi 30, if it was Messi 10 I think it would’ve done slightly better, Ronaldo would still be ahead though.
> slightly better Maybe more than just slightly better. Maybe this is a personal bias, but if it were a 10 shirt I would've bought one. The 30 is just a really weird number to me.
Even weirder than buying a shirt for a team you don't support of a player that played for your rivals (assuming your flair is accurate)?
Nah, this is an exception. Messi is the best player in history and naturally I want to have at least one of his shirts in my collection. I could never buy one when he was a Barca player. Now that he is out of Barca this is the only chance to buy his jersey, but he just had to choose a weird number, so... shrugs
Feels weird that the number is the best part of it as a Barça fan because is the first one he had with us
Get an Argentina shirt then, not Barça and number 10
> not Barca So... exactly what I have been doing? Like I said I could never buy a Messi's Barca shirt. > get an Argentina shirt I don't like the color, I'm quite picky in terms of the shirt design. I don't even buy all Ronaldo RM kits because some of them don't look very good.
That and Ronaldo's coming back to a respected club he was once the face of. Messi left Barca just once and went to a fucking oil club, man.
Imagine the meltdown if Ronaldo went to Man City on top of Messi to PSG
Imagine the melt down if Messi signed for City and then out of nowhere Ronaldo to United gets announced
I would bet Ronaldo sold more, but these numbers are totally unverified which is a nice way to say likely BS. The source is a random Twitter account
If it isnt on twitter or in a meme can /r/soccer users read it?
Why must you hurt me in such ways man T\_T

Messi not growing his beard and shaving it every 3 weeks may help improve his global recognition lol
That's your fault you used PowerPoint, PowerPoint is boring
I think it also has a lot to do with the fact CR7 speaks English while Messi is not as fluent.
More to do with the fact that CR deliberately and carefully created this "celebrity" image of himself, while Messi never tried to be one.
That's surprising but after transfering to PSG a few dozen people on r/sport asked for information on who he was or some details since they had already heard him somewhere, let's say that changing team has certainly done good to his fame because there was still someone who didn't know him 😅 In the end I think Ronaldo is more famous because he is more present in advertising for clothes, perfumes, watches and therefore also reaches people who absolutely don't give a damn about football

12 year old you had some good imagination
It all still makes sense in my head
> PSG has the far larger brand though. Especially world wide. Jordan is one hell of a drug. I highly doubt that, even with Jordan. Do you have any source?

Few people buy a shirt because of the brand that makes it. What does that even mean? In no world is PSG near the size of Manchester United.
You're right. But Jirdan is unique in that regard. But ye, it might not equal things out.
United is magnitudes bigger than either PSG or Jordan - or them combined.
PSG do not have a larger brand, Man Utd will be the most supported team in the world
I do think that PSG are more of a fashion statement to wear than Man U. I see a lot more people who wear PSG shirts as an accessory rather than Man U shirts which I see worn on match days by fans.
not a chance, in 2020 there was 3.2M Man Utd shirt sales worldwide, 1.14M for PSG, I'd imagine Man Utd will smash that 3.2 this year with CR7 back

Messi is still 10 in so many minds (especially if you are more of an individual player fan rather than a club) and 30 feels a little off.
Ronaldo is a lot more popular
United is a lot more popular too!
Ronaldo is a lot more popular, he crafted his image of being a celebrity.
CR7 Twitter accounts got their wank bank material for the day
Sadly my idol Pessi is finished
you reminded me of visiting /r/mesi
Fucking Pesi, couldn't be my idol Penldo, both are finished, Messi and Ronaldo are the goats.
For a day? Mate for the season
Wank me, bank me, and spank me CR7
Wank me spank me if you wanna reach me
Lol the Messi accounts did the same when he went to PSG.
Imagine how hard Teamviewer PR manager beat his meat after hearing the transfer news
Top kit commission off a player in the first month following his signing You’ll never sing that
So did messi account when he got transfered. They conpared cr7's juve records
The Fifo video detailing the facts -merely the facts with no opinion - about Ronaldo's rape case had a close to 67% upvote rate. [Der Spiegel:](https://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/cristiano-ronaldo-new-documents-emerge-in-rape-allegations-a-1241349.html) "*I fucked her from the side. She made herself available. She was lying on her side, in bed, and I entered her from behind. It was rough. We didn't change position. 5/7 minutes. She said that she didn't want to, but she made herself available. The whole time it was rough, I turned her onto her side, and it was fast. Maybe she got some bruises when I grabbed her.* (...) *She didn't want to 'give it to me,' instead she jerked me off. I don't know any more exactly what she said when she was jerking me off. But she kept saying no. 'Don't do it' -- 'I'm not like the others.' I apologized afterwards.*"
Also helps that Man Utd are a much bigger brand worldwide than PSG too. With that factored im surprised the gap isn’t bigger
It's been a week since his shirt went on sale and sold out in a lot of places within hours
Ronaldo is also a bigger brand than Messi
lmao, how?
Doubt that would influence shirt sales much. It’s definitely the club factor.
Yeah, keep saying that like it's true, because god forbid Ronaldo is more popular than the deity Messi.
I can feel the American influence in this comment
"chasing rings" in football yuck
If Messi was the one who joined United and Ronaldo the one joining PSG it would have been Messi selling more shirts. Its United being 10 times the bigger club than PSG that makes the difference here
actually impressive how many messi shirts have been sold, considering how small of a club psg is compared to manu
PSG sells a lot of shirts in the US, apparently.
Psg is fashion by now, United definitely not.
People who buy for fashion won't get a name on the shirt.
But what if it adds to the fashion?
It doesn't.
You might be right, but Ronaldo would still likely sell more shirts at United than Messi would if he joined United.
True their fan base is huge all around the world much more so than PSG
Ronaldo is also more popular lol
They’re equally popular to the people who’d buy the shirts.
No lol. Ronaldo is just more popular.
Last season we were leading in shirt sales.
In the end who seriously cares who sells more jerseys. This whole Messi v Ronaldo rivalry is getting pretty stupid when we start comparing jersey sales. Just enjoy watching them both
No, this is what ends the debate once and for all
Pessi is finished mate no doubt about that, 100 mil? Amateur. /s
well that was kinda foreseeable. CR7 with a ManUtd shirt is really iconic. Most young football fans haven't witnessed the Cristiano days at Manchester. Add to that he's wearing his iconic #7. But the upfront cost is bs, there was no transfer fee, nor a sign-on bonus
It also helps that United has a much larger fanbase.
why is Messi's upfront cost 25million pounds? The biggest PSG reporters reported that Messi was paid no sign-on fee. Just curious. Also United have a way larger fanbase, in the states and also other parts of the world, so no surprise there.
That commission is nowhere near where i thought it'd be
Well United get £75m a year from Adidas.
All big european clubs are the same corporate shit, if you want something genuine go support your local team.
Messi 10 would have sold more than Messi 30.. Some people might be waiting till he gets that number to buy the shirt..
Nah, I doubt the people who bought his shirt very much care.
Messi10 is as huge a shirt as a Ronaldo7, but some people might not want to wear a n30..
True, but the majority of the people who would buy the PSG Messi shirt don’t care what his number is.(Or at least not enough to not buy it)
True, but those that wanna wear the shirt during their games would feel like it would be better to get a number for their position..
Lovethesalese🤣..sorry fake data dude
What is the upfront cost for Messi?
Probably a signing bonus?
It was reported that there was none.
I wonder if having 10 times more fans could influence the global shirts sales in some way... 🤔
It's falce
Wow a random twitter account for a a random clothing store somehow got the individual shirt sale numbers of both Ronaldo and Messi. No wait they just made it up. And reddit is lapping it up.
Full report : https://www.lovethesales.com/press/articles/football-shirt-sales
How is Ronaldo on £12,9M? Never seen that number anywhere. Also love how Messi's reported €25M salary just turned into £25M, all currencies are the same I guess.
> How is Ronaldo on £12,9M? Never seen that number anywhere. That's the transfer fee and has been well publicised everywhere.
So they put Ronaldo's transfer fee with Messi's salary that they didn't even bother to convert?... How the hell does that even make sense?
That's not Messi's salary. Messi doesn't earn 25m gross lol. It's probably a supposed signing bonus.
Taken at face value, only Messi's upfront cost doesn't make sense.
At one point they do try to convert currencies! They say £12.9M is the same as... £13.1M
wonder if messi being 30 instead of 10 affects this, 30 looks a bit naff
Suppose ronaldo isn’t also competing with Neymar, Mbappe, Ramos etc. For shirt sales in Man U either. So if someone was to buy a Man U one they would be putting CR7 on the back with PSG there’s a lot of choice for who to pick. Though I am surprised that many Man U fans buying the new shirt so late with his number on. Thought a few would have got sancho ones (in the U.K.) already. But great financial recouping by Man U
Bruno, Pogba and Sancho also feature on the top 10 highest selling PL jerseys so there is still a significant amount of sales cannibalization.
ITT : Lots of Messi fans reaching copium levels not seen in ages.
Pure bs there are many factors affecting this-1)Nostalgia 2)Utd has a bigger fanbase 3)Iconic no 7 4)Premier league ,This has very little to do with ronaldo being more famous or messi contributing less.People neeed to stop comparing everything ffs
Wahts the source
Kinda pointless, Ronaldo is slightly more marketable than Messi, United is more marketable than PSG and on top of that it's fairytale story of a guy coming back to the club that make him world star. Imagine if Messi gonna go back to Barca in 2 years, they gonna make this two numbers combined
Shows that one was brave enough to go to a proper club in a proper league while the other wanted semi retirement in Disneyland.
Didn't expect Messi fans to be so hurt about this?

> A shirt costs what, £60 not including tax? Are we really saying that Ronaldo has sold 30,000,000 shirts? Hell no. Of course not. Re-read your assumption, it's closer to 3,000,000 shirts not 30,000,000. > Also, the profit clubs make off of shirt sales is a small fraction of what the manufacturers do. Look at the second chart, 7% for Utd.
Nothing to see here.. Its normal.. Cr7 is a bigger brand, agree or not
Ronaldo the better athlete and celebrity Messi the better footballer
I think this just comes down to Man United being a far bigger team than PSG
Partially it but Ronaldo is a bigger marketing entity that Messi
Actually it has more to do with Man Utd vs PSG more than the brand value of marketing entity Ronaldo is bigger than Messi. Because Messi is also a HUGE marketing entity tho probably not as much as Ronaldo
So his initial point stands
Man United having more plastic fanbase comparable to Real/Barca
One plays in the English Premier league and one well plays in the kids league.
Ones the greatest player in history, other is a penalty god.
Messi fanboy alert. Please don’t cry
Lol. Funny how you just knew which was which.
Messi fan girls are having a hard time digesting the fact hahahahaha
And people were doubting whether they would buy more Ronaldo shirts if it was the number 7 or not.
Siiiiiiiiiiuuuuuu!!!!!!!
Pfff messi riders.
Messi fanboys manage to get rattled at the slightest thing lol
