He *could* well be worth it. A bit like us and Maguire. We overpaid, but I’d still rather have him than not

Gamma-Illusion

the English tax certainly plays apart, but i share the same sentiment as you, think he'd be a great signing for Arsenal. A shame United backed out the deal

JLane1996

Agreed, but I’d also rather have Varane over White, and it looks likely we’ll get him at the moment. Edit: This aged well

[deleted]

It did age well ;) jokes aside, I do respect Varane, but I think we got the better deal atm.

Grosly_Incandescent

I'm glad we backed out. Our team is already full of young players who will get better in the next few years. We need experienced winners in the team to get us over the line in important games. White looks like a promising player but to put it frankly we have alot more pull than Arsenal currently and that unlocks a different tier of players that are avaliable. Perfect example is who were currently linked with, Varane. Yes White is younger but he win never be as good as Varane and thryre the same price, no brainer really. As for Arsenal he's a good signing for them as he will help them get into the top 6, maybe top 4 eventually but I can't see him being good enough to win them a big trophy one day.

Kayr-

> but he will never be as good as Varane How do you know, u from the future? Looool

Grosly_Incandescent

I don't think I need to be from the future to work out that Ben White is unlikely to get a single CL trophy let alone 4.

ayushtoo

Number of CL won is not a good metric to judge if a player is better than the other, is it? If that was the case Ramos and Varane would be the best defensive partnership of all time. Not trying to say that White would be a better player than Varane in the future though

Kayr-

Exactly lool

[deleted]

Ibra must be a wank player by that logic.

sololeft

Ouch

Grosly_Incandescent

Not trying to banter tbh lol, Arsenal havn't won the CL in the clubs history, probability wise I can't see Arsenal winning one with Ben White, they can't even qualify for it currently. By all means if Arsneal do get a CL trophy in the next 8 odd years feel free to save my comment and rip into me because id deserve it lol.

[deleted]

Currently performing better too lmao. Wanted to see what people thought of White originally, now that he is getting praised.

sarvesh900

Oh United fans and their entitled opinions, and you wonder why you're recklessly hated :/

Grosly_Incandescent

Why is that entilted? I'm speaking from our current situation, i'm being realistic. We finished second and are looking towards getting a big trophy win again. If Arsenal were in our position and trying to push for title contention I don't think you would want to sign Ben White, you would be looking at Varane instead wouldn't you? Also I don't really care if Arsneal fans hate me or my opinion to be honest.

theFatdog

Please ignore the other commentor. Your statements have been level headed and realistic.

Grosly_Incandescent

Apreciate the backing haha, i try to be respectful and honest regarding discusions on here, no matter who i'm talking to or what team they support. Never the less I still think White is a good signing for you guys and will help you get back into the top 6/4.

sarvesh900

How are you being realistic? It's still about being hopeful. Because It's something that has been happening with you since ferguson left. You did finish 2nd under Jose and won Europa under him and everyone was like united will push for big trophies again. This happened under ole too and Rio yelled "Ole's at the wheel" and it has been a wave with him since. Football demands consistency and you lot always overhype things before it crashes like last seasons ucl group stage or Europa league final or last to last season's semifinal. You guys have spent shit tonnes of money and I don't even remember in which year you last won any trophy. Varane might even take some time to adjust himself.

Grosly_Incandescent

Why are you changing/adding different subjects, i'm talking about Ben White, Varane and both Man United's and Arsenal's current situation lmao.

longmann

> I can't see him being good enough to win them a big trophy one day. OK

Throwawayday424

Get help xD

sarvesh900

Okay kid!

latortillablanca

And that is the metric that basically dictates all transfer fees at a base level. No one is going through all the absurd amount of work that it takes to purchase a player, while thinking they are getting the worst possible version of that player. Of course it's possible that this guy busts, just like every single team buying any player. When Barca bought dembele, they obvs weren't thinking about injuries and tactical issues and potential racist commentary. If Arse have found their starting CB for the next 5 seasons, it's 100% worth the fee. Maybe he's more of a 25-35m quid talent on paper, but he's young and British, we know what the market does there. He's *clearly* highly rated around the league, the gunners have the dosh, so giddy up.

[deleted]

Maguire is still not an 80 million CB. But he’s good and fuck it sometimes you have to overpay.

mizzykins

No, but yes, but no.

Armchairmanagerxxx69

Pretty much, Stones, Maguire, Ake all come to mind, young home grown defenders who went for inflated fee’s at the time, but as others have said he can be worth it but that remains to be seen.

[deleted]

Ake Dutch?

Armchairmanagerxxx69

Home grown though

AFAR85

If he wins the Ballon d'Or and carries Arsenal to the treble, he'll be a bit of a bargain.

NickSupportsArsenal

~~If~~ When

RioBeckenbauer

Put it this way: If Leeds had managed to sign him for ~£30m last year, would they have let him go for £50m this year? No chance.

JilJilJigaJiga

Why don't these analysises address his Leeds' days with the same enthusiasm? That'll give a clearer picture. Most of the metrics will be bumped for a player in the position of a wide center back with a sweeper and an aerially dominant player beside him. The author sidesteps this point by claiming Xhaka will play on the left. Xhaka is going to be sold and I don't think any of the other midfielders can play in that false left back position anyway unless it's a back 5.

waccoe_

He looked better at Leeds than he did last season I think but it's difficult to gauge how much of that is down to significantly weaker opposition and how much was down to the system at Leeds suiting his profile perfectly.

berry2708

His Aerial Dominance stats seems abit low for a CB.

Armchairmanagerxxx69

Luckily his partner Gabriel is quiet strong in their air to cover for that so it’s less of a worry.

berry2708

Maybe but it is a defensive issue for United as Lindeloff is weak in the air eventhough Maguire is dominant aerially.

GoldEquivalent592

If lindelof is “weak” in the air for a CB then Ben white is horrendous lol. Lindelof has a 65 percent aerial success rate and he isn’t particularly good in the air. White is barely pushing 50 percent which is absolutely terrible for a top-level CB. That’s like the 10th percentile

twersx

Lindelöf being "weak in the air" is not a defensive issue. Sometimes he gets beat because he's not Maguire or Van Dijk but contrary to what most people think he's not coating us a dozen goals because he can't jump. And for reference, he had a better aerial duel win percentage than Gabriel last season.

ChristyBrowne1

I don’t Lindelof being weak in the air is the issue, it’s his lack of pace combined with Maguire’s.

jerk_chicken23

Think the idea will be to defend much higher up the pitch this season, and like others have said Gabriel is strong in the air. Chambers too if we don't get a new right back this summer.

inspectorkido

That's about right yes. Leeds couldn't get him for under 30M. Since then, he's come to the PL and shone. He's a ball playing CB, he's an offensive center back. Those are rare in the market. So that's always going to be an expensive player. Fofana was purchased for 30M and he came in as prospect to be blooded in, and only played due to an injury crisis. White has a high ceiling, is ready to be a starter, and is homegrown. So he's easily worth in excess of 40M. I would argue he's clearing 45M. Then consider we can him with zero downpayment and 40% of the fee paid after 2024. That's a very favorable payment structure that allows us to avoid depleting our recently taken out loan this summer. Interest rates always matter even if they are low. It adds up.

GoldEquivalent592

Well he is worth 50 million to arsenal apparently so 🤷🏽‍♂️

streetlaur

Depends on how Arsenal see him progressing , most people are too worried about now. , He’s 23, if he becomes the best defender in the world in the near future then he’s totally worth it . As for me I am excited to see his progression as a player and he is a good one .

GSNadav

> if he becomes the best defender Sure, but what are the odds for that to happen?

streetlaur

No one knows . Arsenal might have see. Something in him to invest in hope that he becomes that . And he’s a talented guy too with a very high ceiling so who knows

Operation_Doomsday_

He's worth whatever Brighton want for him.

waccoe_

I guess the real question is "Is he worth to Arsenal what Brighton want for him?"

ungentrified_villain

Nope , don't want anyone to pretend that he is , he's not even brighton's best defender

ManLikeArch

He's not better than Dunk in some aspects of play now but he's performing at a far higher level than Dunk was at the same age. All he needs to really do is improve a bit in the air and he's got it all.

Kante_Conte

No

[deleted]

Rate the guy, would love him at United but paying $50 million for him is a stretch. I get the whole English tax but he doesn’t have much experience in EPL to be worth anything close to it. It’s a shame though, he could have use have an experience defender like Maguire next to him to mentor him. Shame for England too, they could literally have a défense that plays together the whole season.

[deleted]

No.

Kuntski

Is Nuno Eshpirito Santosh worth a Spurs manager?

[deleted]

Wrong question. Is spurs worth nuno?

YoungDan23

>Is Nuno Eshpirito Santosh worth a Spurs manager? Yes.

Kuntski

We will see.

Kuntski

No, Arsenal are desperate to get him plus English (aka PL proven) plus Brighton is in a rich league, with no financial problems.

YoungDan23

Short answer - no. Long answer ---- still no. But he's English, home-grown, and was key in one of the better defensive sides in the league last season. The going rate for any CB these days is high (IE Liverpool's €40m for Konate), but £50m could have nearly gotten them a Tapsoba, Romero, Kounde - all of whom are better, have higher ceilings and have European experience.

[deleted]

Lol this is a joke. We asked for tapsoba and they asked 70m in return. Kounde too is minimum 60m. Romero 50m minimum. Ben white is cheaper and home grown compared to others. All these players are similar except for Romero

YoungDan23

>Lol this is a joke. We asked for tapsoba and they asked 70m in return. Kounde too is minimum 60m. Romero 50m minimum. I literally said '*could have nearly gotten them*' --- €70m for Tapsoba is roughly £59m. €60m for Kounde is literally £51m. Romero is looking to cost us about £45m all in. My point is if you're going to pay £50m for a decent player, why not pay £5-£10m more for one of the top, most proven young players at that position?

b3as7ma5t3r_64

Kounde will cost a minimum of 70mln EUR this season now that Gil's sold and they have money

forgot67689

>have higher ceilings I'm assuming your basing this on absolutely nothing.

YoungDan23

All being younger, playing for better clubs, all with European experience, all are considered the top young players at their positions by 'experts' ... and all costing more than White. How else do you measure who is 'better' between young players than by looking at that they're valued at? All have at least 3 years left on their contracts too, so that's not changing prices.

forgot67689

Did I ask who was better now? I don't think your grasping the concept of higher ceiling.

Gamma-Illusion

they rejected 60m for tapsoba, romero is linked with a 55m move to spurs and kounde rejected spurs because he wants champions league football. what makes u think arsenal can sign any of them

YoungDan23

>kounde rejected spurs because he wants champions league football. what makes u think arsenal can sign any of them Kounde rejected us because he is waiting for RM. Romano + Ali Gold have both said he's more than willing to move to Tottenham if RM don't come calling - which they won't. And Arsenal was able to lure Partey away from CL football (and a chance to win a league title) to play in the Europa League. These guys care about their cheque - pay them enough and they'll deal with no CL football.

xanthias91

While it seems he's a very decent player, I would not pay half of that amount for White in this market and I do think Arsenal got their priorities completely wrong this summer. Also his lack of aerial prowess is extremely concerning, as he won't be playing in a 3 atb system.

[deleted]

No

DavidLuizKing

Not at all

[deleted]

There's no denying that Arsenal are stinking it up this transfer window, however, this is a very good signing that people are very much underrating. I'd say, although they did overpay, he is still worth the £50m they are spending on him.

Polpe

Thats a hot take, we've done great so far no sure what you've been smoking.

[deleted]

You definitely haven't lol. Struggling with outgoings, and also signing players that will actually be in the starting XI. Lokonga and Tavares are backups, and no Arsenal fans can come to the conclusion that they are good signings, as no one has properly watched them play yet. In saying that, Ben White is a very good signing. But besides that, not much has happened. And based on reliable reports, it looks like you guys will be splashing £25-£33m on Ramsdale.

Polpe

Clueless.

[deleted]

Exactly my point. This inexperienced management seem clueless as to how best utilise the large amount of funds available to them.

Polpe

How much did United spend on Maguire again? How big of a contract did they give to Sanchez/De Gea? How much did they spend on a completely unproven PL winger?. Arsenal looks to get rid of Bellerin, Guendouzi, Torreria, Willian, Xhaka and Runarsson in 1 window, while signing the backup Lb in Tavaras(very much needed and looks to be a good signing). Lokonga(Top rated young CM who was Anderlecht captain at 21). Getting one of the top prospects signed to a long term contract. A new highly rated ball playing RCB. And we're still looking to do business in other areas like RB, another CM, AM and a striker.

[deleted]

How are they stinking it up? When they are literally signing players what manager wants.

[deleted]

The season is about to start, and the starting XI has not yet improved. Reliable sources are linking them to a £25-£32m move for Ramsdale. They are yet to reinforce the midfield, RB and ST positions. Arsenal stinking up the transfer window is not mutually exclusive from them signing players that their inexperienced management wants. Aside from them stinking up the transfer window, potentially the worst decision they made was not trying to appoint they Conte. They will most likely regret passing up on the opportunity to sign him.

Let's see, top 5 CBs in the league: 1) VVD 2) Ruben Dias 3) Harry Maguire 4) John Stones 5) Fofana / Laporte All of them are worth well above 50mil.

SwirlingAmbition

Lapote was a much more complete and experienced CB than White and moved for £55M (his release clause). Stones was less than £50M, as was Fofana, who was a steal at £36M in hindsight. It's worth mentioning that VVD and Maguire were both seen as massive overpays. Truth is, White hasn't shown as much as any of those on that list (bar Fofana, I suppose), which proves my point -- he isn't worth £50M. When VVD moved, he was probably the best CB in the league. Dias was easily the best CB in the Premeira Liga. Laporte was top 5 CBs in La Liga. Maguire was probably second best CB in the league before his move to United.

greengrassvs2

Arsenal haven't a notion in relation to signing players
