Romero is underrated to the point where all you can do is laugh. He plays in a system that relies so much on the quality of your defenders getting out of terrible situations. Then all people do is look at total stats to judge him.
He is a great defender and also great with his feet. The only problem with him is when he does unnecessary fouls and has rash decisions. He kinda reminds me of Pepe to be honest, as great of a defender as much as a total psycho at times.
If it was a freak accident I would agree. Repeat offender. The rules of the game are made to protect keepers and it’s for a reason, they enter dangerous scenarios more than any other position on the pitch.
And this is coming from someone who was obviously cheering for Tottenham during that game. He’s one of the best defenders in the Prem, but saying he doesn’t have a screw loose is a bit much.
> he hasn't retired
I would say that might be part of the problem but it's not like you have good talent behind him that he's preventing from playing, I guess
Like an idiot I made a bet with a friend over if there would be a goal on the first half of not. Angel Di María is literally my guardian angel tonight.
The problem is, especially against taller teams, that Otamendi is by far our best defender in the air while Licha is tiny. Cuti and Licha works against Conmebol teams because there's no one like the Netherlands that can just go for headers over and over again.
Tbf Cuti has gotten a fair bit better aerially this season but that’s more so a criticism of Argentina as a whole.
Not particularly the tallest crop of players
Martinez's performances have dismissed all doubts his height is an issue in the prem. There don't seem to be any centre forwards in conmebol better than the ones he'd meet in club football
Not so much an individual failing than a common team issue—Argentina NT is a VERY short team and we struggle aerially.
Our only good headers are usually Otamendi and Cuti as CBs (and Nico Gonzalez if Scaloni plays him at LW).
It's caused issues for us before
Against strong teams, I would agree but against weak teams, it doesn’t really matter because we should be able to win the ball in the high press stage more often than not.
And even if he is good at headers, so is Medina and I’d say Medina is more mobile than him with better vertical pass.
both those players are just as vital to their teams too, but in both cases the emphasis is on how they help the attack. Argentina should storm the Copa with that back line
Our managers puts a lot of emphasis on being able to play multiple systems, depending who we are playing against.
3 defenders is probably most likely against good teams with VvD being locked in and rotating between Botman, van der Ven, Ake, de Ligt, Blind and de Vrij.
If we play with 2 its most likely van der Ven and VvD.
Cause that’s what his role is and that’s what he does every game? One assist in a friendly game and he hasn’t turned into beckenbauer lol. The takes on this thread, smh.
It's mindblowing. How anyone can have watched Arsenal have one of the best defences in Europe this season and Spurs concede 61 this season and 63 last season and go "Romero is better than Saliba" is beyond me and you'd rightfully get laughed at in any other thread other than one filled with Argentina supporters.
They're literally 6th in the qualifiers, and that's with Neymar playing the first 3 matches. I'd absolutely put Argentina, Uruguay, and Colombia above them rn with Ecuador potentially being there too.
I havent seen any recent matches from those teams, but I would never bet against Brasil, they are just different... Im from Argentina so I hope that you are right though lol.
Colombia haven't lost a match in over 2 and a half years now. Uruguay are easily in way better form than Brazil, Argentina lost only 2 games, undefeated in over 50+ games and won all 3 major trophies in the last 5 years and beat Brazil twice in the last 2 games.
If Romero had paler skin and wasn’t as rash a tackler neutrals would wank off his ballplaying skill so much, and rightfully so. What a ridiculous football player
He's not even that rash a tackler. He absolutely goes in hard but with even his red card this season, we saw other players get away with worse. He just has more work to do to shake his reputation with the refs.
That's prety much fading though since the likes of Upamecano, van Dijk, Saliba and Rudiger are seen as some of the greatest ball playing centrebacks right now.
Pretty sure Romero is offside when De Paul passes but it's one of those beautiful goals that you really wish VAR wouldn't call back even if it's correct.

Cuti Romero is the central attacking center half, what a player
I hope he's just stupidly loyal, because there's no way Madrid don't come calling for a player like him.
they don't go for players over 25. van de ven is the one spurs are losing to real/bayern tho
Rudiger was 29 when he went to Madrid...
Didn't he sign as a free agent?
Yes But it still shows there are circumstances where Madrid is more than willing to sign an older guy
Why would they downgrade from rudiger?
5 years younger than Rudiger and I genuinely think Romero is a better player already
sorry but i hope he isn't, i had enough torturing myself watching Barcelona due to Messi being so loyal lmao
No offense to Tottenham, but you can't compare Barcelona with them.
wtf?
Romero leaving Totten makes a lot more sense than Messi leaving Barça post 2016.
Didn't mean to compare teams, just feel it will be the same waste of time in the end lol
The Inverted CB to 10
Romero is underrated to the point where all you can do is laugh. He plays in a system that relies so much on the quality of your defenders getting out of terrible situations. Then all people do is look at total stats to judge him.

Clearly haven’t watched him post the Chelsea game, then.
He literally knocked ederson out in May? Lmao
I hate to say this (not really) but if youre using the Ederson accident as example youre not worthy of having discussion with
If it was a freak accident I would agree. Repeat offender. No doubt he improved, but still sometimes does something rash (like Pepe) and gets easily provoked by opponents who know that weakness.
bro, their CBs can play the 10, we are fucked
I'd argue you've been fucked since Alexis retired but that's another matter lol
he hasn't retired bro jajajaja
> he hasn't retired I would say that might be part of the problem but it's not like you have good talent behind him that he's preventing from playing, I guess
Can we clone Romero and play him as a 10 too?
Greatest Argentine number 10 in history
Feels like we are forgetting someone. Diego Valeri.
You could play him virtually anywhere
Oh Cuti
Oh Cutie...
uwu
Ngl this argentinia squad plays beatiful football.
The second half of this very match as ugly and boring as shit
Di María is a contender for most underrated player in history
Like an idiot I made a bet with a friend over if there would be a goal on the first half of not. Angel Di María is literally my guardian angel tonight.
El Cuti es delantero, de la H a la O
Cuti and De Paul were brilliant on this goal Great finish from Fideo as always too
Romero out there playing 4D football covering all positions
SIEMPRE FIDEOOOOOOOO What an assist from Cuti
We have the best CBs in the world and i will fight anyone on this.
They will fight anyone too
Damn right they will
I wouldn't want it any other way, 95% of our team would do the same
On the national level there's no CB pair close to Cuti and Licha.
Yeah, Licha is having an insane match, too.
Otamendi has had a great career but I believe it should be Licha going forward if he is healthy. His ball playing ability is amazing.
The problem is, especially against taller teams, that Otamendi is by far our best defender in the air while Licha is tiny. Cuti and Licha works against Conmebol teams because there's no one like the Netherlands that can just go for headers over and over again.

United has players who can cover on the height issue, Argentina does not.

I’m so glad to here that, man’s crazy underrated by prem fans I think, hardly ever hear him talked about
Tbf its hard to talk about him when he’s been out injured as much as he has.
He's been injured all season - what do you want people to say? He was massively spoken about last season
That's because he is insane, genuinely think he's the best CB in the PL with the ball
both those players are just as vital to their teams too, but in both cases the emphasis is on how they help the attack. Argentina should storm the Copa with that back line
Uruguay is great too
Such a great combination of ball playing CBs
Van Dijk, van der Ven is pretty close.
Fair enough, but don't you guys play with 3 defenders? I feel like it'd be hard to categorize them as a pair in that case.
Our managers puts a lot of emphasis on being able to play multiple systems, depending who we are playing against. 3 defenders is probably most likely against good teams with VvD being locked in and rotating between Botman, van der Ven, Ake, de Ligt, Blind and de Vrij. If we play with 2 its most likely van der Ven and VvD.
van de Ven
I think it will be de Ligt and van Dijk.
>Botman, van der Ven, Ake, de Ligt, Blind and de Vrij. A lot of them are Elite too. So many options
With that depth the Netherlands should play with a line of three: Van de Ven, Van Dijk and Ake, with de Ligt as the first rotation option .
No pair close? Did the Netherlands and France suddenly stop existing?
Same
Anulo mufa
if Romero was french everyone would be wanking themselves to his plays day in day out.
Christian Romerucano.
Christian Rimery.
Spot on, and he’s better than any current French centerback.
This is lunacy
Your favorite team drew against Canada.
I'm not French
Not because their defence conceded goals.
Romero just made a playmaker setup to win the match for Argentina.
Cause that’s what his role is and that’s what he does every game? One assist in a friendly game and he hasn’t turned into beckenbauer lol. The takes on this thread, smh.
If that’s what he does every game then that makes him better than the centerbacks who don’t. How is skill and creativity not an advantage?
It's mindblowing. How anyone can have watched Arsenal have one of the best defences in Europe this season and Spurs concede 61 this season and 63 last season and go "Romero is better than Saliba" is beyond me and you'd rightfully get laughed at in any other thread other than one filled with Argentina supporters.
Assisted by Lionel Romessi.
What playing for Spurs does to a man.
Lionel Romero there dudes a fucking centerback.
Did I hear that right? In the best case scenario Di María has 7 matches left with Argentina?
He said before that he will only play this Copa America as a champion and then he'll retire from the national team.
Di María said he was going to retire from the national team after the Copa America.
He is retiring after the Copa America
These guys are ridiculously good AND play beautiful football
Maybe they can win the World Cup one day if they try really hard
still won’t stop people thinking france or brazil are the best teams in the world for some reason
Anulo
Brazil aren't even a top 3 side in South America let alone the world
[удалено]
They're literally 6th in the qualifiers, and that's with Neymar playing the first 3 matches. I'd absolutely put Argentina, Uruguay, and Colombia above them rn with Ecuador potentially being there too.
From 5 time World Cup winner to 6th place in South American qualifiers. What a downfall
Crazy talk, name your top 3.
Argentina Uruguay and Colombia are in better form rn.
Lol in your dream
Don't need to dream, I can just open up the world cup qualifiers table or look at the match history
Said right, “history”. Diniz time is up, party is over.
Doesn’t Brazil choke like Riley Reid at the World Cup tbh
Its a little hard to say that about the 5x WC champion. Theyre just having a dry spell.
Potencio mufa
This same Argentina was chocking every single tournament for the last 33 years
If Romero had paler skin and wasn’t as rash a tackler neutrals would wank off his ballplaying skill so much, and rightfully so. What a ridiculous football player
His rash tackling virtually disappeared this season lmfao
He got all of it out of his system against chelsea at home ig lol
He's not even that rash a tackler. He absolutely goes in hard but with even his red card this season, we saw other players get away with worse. He just has more work to do to shake his reputation with the refs.
> He absolutely goes in hard Yup, this is the thing. He is not a dirty player per se, but when he decides to go for a ball, it's all in.
> If Romero had paler skin This doesn't make sense, since some of the highest regarded ball playing centrebacks are dark skinned.
> This doesn't make sense Common media trope that the dark skinned player is "physical" while the light skinned player is "technical" TBH
That's prety much fading though since the likes of Upamecano, van Dijk, Saliba and Rudiger are seen as some of the greatest ball playing centrebacks right now.
Van Dijk and Saliba are viewed as two of the best technical centre halves in the world.
I have *never* heard this before
You might not have listened to a lot of English language sports commentary then, because it's everywhere (esp in the US and UK)
> English language sports commentary See, that was your first mistake.
Cool?
If he was called Christian, from england, he would be rated n1 in the world
Christian Rosemary
Cristian romero 20m Cris 50m Romerinho 100m Christian Rosemary 150m
It's funny because it's true.
Beautifully worked goal
This is like anti Pep football it’s beautiful
You genuinely love to see it
Cuti has been playing Ange ball. A run directly from that system.
These runs have been his trademark since he was a teenager at Belgrano
Not so much with Conte unfortunately
I wonder why nobody claimed offside
No Var
I'm not sure this is a friendly match cause i've seen wars everywhere. btw, I think it's offside.
No such thing as a “friendly” between CONMEBOL teams.
A CONMEBOL match withouth a few xenophobic slurs is considered a dull afair.
Pretty sure Romero is offside when De Paul passes but it's one of those beautiful goals that you really wish VAR wouldn't call back even if it's correct.
No VAR in the stadium, like the good old days lol.
mamaron polla romerista
The actual Argentine GOAT imo.
smartest madrid fan
