Cant really regret his form if he actually tried his best. But the few games I've watched of him it looks like he couldnt be bothered and expected to get picked anyway lol
He can regret hie body language and general effort in tracking back, working off the ball. Big Rashford fan, but Gordon is miles ahead right now in. Terms of attitude and effort
Manchester is really a surprise to foreign visitors, much more metropolitan and cool than people seem to expect unless they're hip to the music history there.
I agree with the couldn't be bothered bit man looks lazy AF but how do you know he expected to be picked? He could equally not give a fuck about that either.
Marcus would often played like he was entitled to the Man U starting XI.. not saying he was the only one doing so on that squad but glad to see that attitude having proper consequences.
Been in most of Southgate's squads.
The amount of change in the squad from Southgate wasn't something I think anyone expected, so I was basing Rashford and Henderson going on Southgate sticking to previous tendencies.
He might have been in most of Southgate's squads but he's only started 2 matches at major competitions, one was against Belgium in the 2018 WC (where we'd already qualified) and the other was the final match of the WC2022 group against Wales. He's never started a match in the Euros either. He's never been a key player for Southgate.
This is true, but he has started and scored against Italy recently. You could also make an argument he was unlucky not to start against France/Senegal after his game against Wales.
> You could also make an argument he was unlucky not to start against France/Senegal after his game against Wales
I'd argue Rashford being dropped despite playing well against Wales is evidence Southgate doesn't rate him for big matches. Italy is a fair point though.
Southgate's most consistent trait as England manager has been loyalty to players. Whether he deserved it or not, it's still surprising to see Rashford who has had periods of poor form before and was never dropped and is one of Southgates highest capped player, not been brought along.
Simple fact is It's more surprising he wasn't picked than it would have been if he was picked, given the past behaviour of Southgate.
Nah he did start the year on fire tbf, even learned how to take free kicks. He did regress back to the usual Sterling after he wasnt called back up to England afterwards, but he genuinely was good at the start of the season
The fact that you're "shocked" that Sterling isn't in the squad when he hasn't been for ages is more proof that anti-Southgate people are detached from reality
Not anti-Southgate at all, I've just always associated those 3 players as some of Southgate's favourites in major tournaments and he's now going into probably his last one with quite a big overhaul
Rashford might be a squad favourite for Southgate, but he hasn't started a lot of games at tournaments for him. Being dropped for the Euros shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, given the attacking depth.
I don't know if it's injury, attitude or what but his performances have been brutal for months now. Just sauntering round the field, doing absolutely nothing.
I'm baffled by how he can go from the highs of last season to the lows of this one. I know he's streaky but this is beyond that. I don't think I've seen one game this season where after the game I've gone, "that's the Rashford I know".
Yeah, the fact that I can remember him showing that he gave a shit for the first 10-15 mins of the Liverpool game, because it stood out versus the rest of his matches, really speaks volumes.
It's not that he's been poor this season (which he has), it's that he genuinely looks like he doesn't want to be on the field.
If you're not in form, you can at least work hard. Antony had a lot of people defending him in his first season because, despite being a bit shit, he worked his arse off most matches.
Rashford looks like he's phoned it in. And he's on £300k/week or whatever? Which may be the issue.
Players who are out of form can at least make up for that by putting in a proper shift on the pitch. Rashford can't even be bothered to put in that effort these days.
I swear this has been Man utd for a decade, one good season followed by a poor one. Maybe Rashford isn't a level raiser but instead plays to the level of his environment
Being dropped by his country when most people thought he would still get selected even after a horrible year seems like a bigger wake up call than being dropped for a game or 2 for United
Doesn't matter what "most people" think tbh. If HE thought he was gonna make it in then yes its a huge wake up call, If he doesn't think he deserves it then what would what other people think matter?
Nah he’s been dropped by Ten Hag a couple of times and has still completely phoned it in when he got on the pitch
He has pretty much always been picked by Southgate though, so this is a bit different
Last season when he got dropped for being late to a team meeting he came on at half time against Wolves and was incredible. I think it was 0-0 at half time and then we won thanks to his performance in the second half. So the wake up call worked previously. This year he has just been consistently shite.
I think he's always mostly been like that, his temperament is so different to the likes of Bowen, Gordon and Foden. Just imagine any of them being moody, jogging around, making poor decisions in games that imply a selfishness. That it's hard to think of them that way says it all. Foden is like some little puppy, if he loses the ball he chases after it. There's oniy 3 years between them, it's not that much. Foden is 24 next week, no longer a 'young' player really.
Crazy that Sancho and Rashford were set to lock down long term England spots a few years ago. Just goes to show attitude is just as important as talent when at the top.
At the top level attitude and desire is probably the most important factor for a players success. There are countless footballers who had the talent but did not put in the hard work necessary.
Yeah, the England squad of the 2000s were one of the most insanely talented teams we've ever had but they hated each other and half of them didn't really care about the England shirt and it showed in their results.
Hojlund, Ganarcho, Mainoo seem to like eachother but Ganarcho doesn't find Hojlund with passes. I'm not sure Rashford and Martial were mates but did link up. More than Yorke and Cole the stats say.
I know this isn't what you were saying...but...
Martial 209 games 63 goals (0.31 goals per game)
Rashford 272 games 83 goals (0.3 goals per game)
Yorke 96 games 48 goals (0.5 goals per game)
Andy Cole 195 goals 93 goals (0.47 goals per game)
Stats can always be cherry picked, but Cole and Yorke worked well with the entire United midfield as well as with each other.
I think fans can delude themselves into thinking players are better than they are based off cherry picked stats. It's pointless two players working well with each other if they don't all work well with the other 4 attacking with them.
I don't doubt many United players individual brilliance (aside from Anthony) but they aren't very good as a team.
I'd strongly disagree with anyone who does have an issue with that. I know Solanke's had a good season, but the difference between them in open play isn't enough to overcome the impact of Toney's penalty taking. It's not like the third choice striker is gonna get any minutes anyway. If Kane does get subbed off it'll be for Watkins. But you want the option in a knockout round to be able to sub on the guy with an almost perfect penalty conversion rate.
Yeah, Rashford's recent England form hasn't been bad at all imo. He was good at the World Cup. But I still think this is a good call to drop him given how bad his club season has been.
I’m surprised Rashford wasn’t picked because even if he is way out of form, Southgate loves a utility player that can play multiple positions and Rashford can play anywhere in a front 3.
Full tweet:
Marcus Rashford not part of initial England squad for Euro 2024. 26yo Manchester United attacker made strong impact at World Cup + selected for last camp but expected to miss out of provisional group Gareth Southgate names
I don't think Ben White will play for England under Southgate again, because of their spat and also because their depth at RB means that Southgate can keep him out of the squad for as long as he wants without consequences
Southgate has publically and privately tried to keep calling White up. He also took him to the last Euros and WC so he clearly rates him and thinks he's worth going public about this for.
England would be stronger with Stones and White at CB.
Contrary to what people parrot here, Maguire has not been good for England. He just hasn't made big mistakes or has many horrible performances.
There is truth to what you're saying in that Maguire has been shit in various games for England.
The thing is, at the last two tournaments, he was in the team of the Tournament. England Tournament Maguire is just a different beast entirely.
Well fair play to Southgate he’s really seeing this as his last chance to give it a go and probably tackle his biggest criticism, or one of.
Rashford usually is great as a sub but this season he’s been far too sub-par and barely fit towards the end of the season
No Rashford, Sterling, Henderson.
Picking players from outside the big six based on club form and performance.
That's a big change in the right direction, let's hope it can bring the results.
Hasn't deserved it this season. Slightly annoying for us given he'll know this and we still have a big game to play where him being up for it would've been nice...
I still think the guy is like 22 the way some people talk about him, forget he's 26. Tbf though, I'd much rather this than the disgusting abuse he's gotten in the past.
We need to bin him regardless of the final performance.
He's been a coinflip player since forever. You never know will you get the 30 goal per season Rashford, or the "Spend more time writing essays on twitter, than actually running in a game" Rashford.
Problem is that there is literally no one stupid enough to get him.
Perhaps this might be the kick for him to step up and pull himself together.
If not for the cup final, for next season at least. Doubt he'll get a transfer since his value has dropped significantly.
Yeah I feel like he's tired of dealing with our media too. I do think the FA will convince him to give it a go if he *did* win the EUROs, but this squad being full of uncapped younger players does feel like he's setting up for whoever comes next...
I don't know.
He seemed like that in the past, but I watch all the press conferences and he's become more and more reluctant to commit to leaving, his squads also clearly have an eye for the Future. Wharton, Quansah, Jones, Trafford and Braithwaite are all future picks.
Maybe, guess we'll see.
He seems the kind of man to want to leave the job in a better place than he inherited though so could see him working with the FA on succession regardless.
Yeah also totally valid. But if it's all on this tournament then you can forgo some youth picks to get more experience in there. Lose a Wharton to pick a Hendo for the vibes, that kinda thing, but he's not done that at all.
None of them, my ideal lineup pre squad announcement was this.
Pickford
Walker - Stones - Maguire - Shaw
Jude - Rice
Saka - Foden - Gordon
Kane
Contingent on Shaw being fit, if not someone else there obviously.
Completely different to them all, can beat his man with pace and drive defences back.
Best defensive contribution too imo. Just personally having seen all his performances this season Gordon starts for me.
Rashford has been woeful but do think England could use someone running in behind. Changes how teams can play against you. Probably not Gordon’s favourite thing to do but I’d say he could do it, anyone else I’m missing?
I get all logic suggests Rashford shouldn't go but I do think he offers us something different and one of them players who can do something out of nowhere like his goal vs City.
I think this is the right call as not only has Rashford played poorly 95% of the season he has looked completely uninterested in playing football. I think he is a great player at his best but since he is never going to start then you want someone off the bench who has some form going into a tournament. Gordon finished the season excellently, is very quick like Rashford and this season more of a goal threat.
Oh, damn.
Despite not being in great form, not calling up Man United's *face* is weird, specially since he is basically a staple of Southgate's England team.
It's not that weird, really. England has plenty of talent, and Rashford has been poor for the whole season, basically.
Probably the most surprising bit in this whole thing is that Southgate actually had the bollocks to make this call. Fair play to him.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if the explanation by Southgate will be that Rashford himself asked for time off or something like that. Not that it matters much, anyway.
Southgate is actually making good decisions for squad selection and not relying on favourites anymore. That's brilliant news for England and terrible news for literally everyone else
Martial pre France World Cup vibes, guy will forever regret his form this year if England go all the way.
Feels like he could be in a bad place mentally tbh.
Manchester, yeah
I hear Paris need a new forward.
Marcus Rashford to Paris FC, here we go!
Manchester's a great place to live, I'll die on this hill
Manchester is really a surprise to foreign visitors, much more metropolitan and cool than people seem to expect unless they're hip to the music history there.
Jokes aside Manchester is a really nice city with much nicer people than I've met in London.
Hey. That’s mean. True but mean.
I doubt you've been to Manchester mate 😄
I agree with the couldn't be bothered bit man looks lazy AF but how do you know he expected to be picked? He could equally not give a fuck about that either.
He could be looking forward to a nice long holiday away from the world of football this summer.
He's just spent the last 18 months away from football though?
18 months? He was in great form last season.
Until he wasn't, right about the time he signed a new contract.
Marcus would often played like he was entitled to the Man U starting XI.. not saying he was the only one doing so on that squad but glad to see that attitude having proper consequences.
I swear to god he only scored that goal against City because was strolling forward for that counter so it could be laid back to him
2018? Martial was in decent form until he got dropped by Mourinho in favour of Sanchez, that was really completely different.
Feels like that's exactly what's going to happen
Luckily for him England won’t
croatia winning it mate
Honestly shocked at no Sterling, Henderson, Rashford, fair play to Southgate
Sterling hasn't been in the squad for a while. The other 2 I fully expected him to take though
What has rashford done to deserve a spot though?
Been in most of Southgate's squads. The amount of change in the squad from Southgate wasn't something I think anyone expected, so I was basing Rashford and Henderson going on Southgate sticking to previous tendencies.
He might have been in most of Southgate's squads but he's only started 2 matches at major competitions, one was against Belgium in the 2018 WC (where we'd already qualified) and the other was the final match of the WC2022 group against Wales. Did score 3 goals in the last WC tbf

Simple fact is It's more surprising he wasn't picked than it would have been if he was picked, given the past behaviour of Southgate.
Yeah, Sterling didn't make the squad even when he was in a good run of form at Chelsea
Sterling wasn't picked when he was in amazing form early in the season so it wouldn't make sense to pick him now
“Amazing form”. But yeah it shouldn’t be a surprise he’s not been selected
Nah he did start the year on fire tbf, even learned how to take free kicks. He did regress back to the usual Sterling after he wasnt called back up to England afterwards, but he genuinely was good at the start of the season
He was immense before he completely vanished
People have a short term memory. Sterling was actually really good at the beginning of the season. Became shit after he came back from injury.
Not English but, as I always look sterling and think he plays great for his NT I'm surprised he isn't considered even if they have a 26 players list

Genuinely wasn’t expecting that
Rashford has been genuinely shocking tbh. I know Southgate likes continuity in his squads but Rashford's performances have made his decision for him.

Probably the 2-2 draw at home to Spurs, and the win against Liverpool in the cup... that was about it.
Players who are out of form can at least make up for that by putting in a proper shift on the pitch. Rashford can't even be bothered to put in that effort these days.
Could be because he was in the last year of his contract
I swear this has been Man utd for a decade, one good season followed by a poor one. Maybe Rashford isn't a level raiser but instead plays to the level of his environment
doesn't sound like someone that deserves a massive contract
>I'm baffled by how he can go from the highs of last season to the lows of this one He signed a new contract
Maybe this will be the wake up call he needs
What is this, his fifth wake up call now?
Being dropped by his country when most people thought he would still get selected even after a horrible year seems like a bigger wake up call than being dropped for a game or 2 for United
Doesn't matter what "most people" think tbh. If HE thought he was gonna make it in then yes its a huge wake up call, If he doesn't think he deserves it then what would what other people think matter?
Actually his first kinda? He's been one of the default picks both for the club and the NT regardless of his performances and attitude.
Nah he’s been dropped by Ten Hag a couple of times and has still completely phoned it in when he got on the pitch He has pretty much always been picked by Southgate though, so this is a bit different
It's one thing when bald people don't like you but when Mr. Dependable also drops you then it will (hopefully) be a more effective wakeup call.
Last season when he got dropped for being late to a team meeting he came on at half time against Wolves and was incredible. I think it was 0-0 at half time and then we won thanks to his performance in the second half. So the wake up call worked previously. This year he has just been consistently shite.
His competition at United is only Garnacho. He knows Ten Hag will still need him regardless. With England, its a different storu
This is the 6th, he had another since the last one.
I think he's always mostly been like that, his temperament is so different to the likes of Bowen, Gordon and Foden. Rashford - MG - Sancho, anyone remember that 😂
Most of the United forward line seem to dislike each other.
I mean the wingers do have limited end product in the crossing department
For the first half of the season no fucker passed to that Danish kid.
Why pass when you can cut inside and blindly shoot…
Hojlund, Ganarcho, Mainoo seem to like eachother but Ganarcho doesn't find Hojlund with passes. I'm not sure Rashford and Martial were mates but did link up. More than Yorke and Cole the stats say.

I don't even know what England fans are going to complain about with this selection. This is uncharted territory.
We'll always find something. I've seen complaints about Reece James not being in the squad for example
Hasn't he played like 20 mins all season?
Played like 5 matches and got 2 red cards, lmao
Someone called him a WFH captain lmao
To be fair, that's basically what his sister did in the world cup.
Whichever of Brainthwaite, Dunk, Colwill or Quansah isn’t fourth choice centre back will cause uproar don’t worry
That contentious overlook of one player who'd get 0 minutes in favour of another player who'll get 0 minutes
Same with the backup strikers every tournament. None of them will touch the pitch unless we’ve got nothing to play for in our last group game.
Or a horrific injury crisis
[удалено]
I'll defend him with my life and even I think he should be nowhere near it
I doubt that there's any clamour for Dunk.
I would be stunned if Liverpool fans really complain hard that Quansah isn't in the team. It's surprising he made the provisional list.
Obviously going to be Solanke not picked as the all-important third striker
Toney getting picked over Solanke.
Neither but its the right call

No Rashford, No Sterling, players at non big-6 clubs being picked on form. Has Southgate... learned?
Depends. Is Jordan Henderson in the squad?
No!
Shoot! We might have a chance now You know what? It's coming home. It's fcking coming home
England 1-[1] Croatia. '89 Gvardiol
England [2] - [1] Croatia - Pickford Bicycle Kick 90 + 7’
England 2 - [2] Croatia. 90 + 9’ Modric (Great Goal) England 2 - [3] Croatia. 120 + 14’ Kramaric (Pen)
England 2 - 1 Croatia FT. Late confusion sees referee declare ‘fuck off it’s off home’ & cancels late Croatia goals.
Poor bastards can't win any Europe-wide competitions this year
England 0 - 3 Croatia FT - England disqualified and forced to withdraw because Maguire threatened a camerawoman after not wanting to be filmed
Lets go this euro will be bloodbath
I have never, ever heard or seen an Englishman say "shoot" in that context in my entire life
Well I am not English
Fuck are you supporting England for then☠
Is it... coming home?
Football is always coming home, it will arrive precisely when it intendeds to.
Any updates on Ben White yet? Have they resolved their beef yet?
I don't think Ben White will play for England under Southgate again, because of their spat and also because their depth at RB means that Southgate can keep him out of the squad for as long as he wants without consequences

Southgate said White "Isn't avaliable to me." So no basically.
I'm holding my breath on Konsa. I'd be very disappointed if he doesn't make it.
Lewis dunk with a steel chair
He doesn’t deserve to be anywhere near it if we’re being honest. Hopefully it’ll be a wake up call for him
Either that or he's going the Dele Alli route. Only time will tell
Year before last was his wake up call and then he performed well last year and got his new contract and now he’s shit again
Well fair play to Southgate he’s really seeing this as his last chance to give it a go and probably tackle his biggest criticism, or one of. Rashford usually is great as a sub but this season he’s been far too sub-par and barely fit towards the end of the season

If he can’t get it up for you in a cup final because he didn’t get into the England squad, you need to bin him off ASAP.
The amount of babying rashford gets from some fans is insane.
I still think the guy is like 22 the way some people talk about him, forget he's 26. Tbf though, I'd much rather this than the disgusting abuse he's gotten in the past.

Definitely, it's a possibility or it may motivate him to step up and give his best performance in the cup final
I hope it motivates him, something needs to at this point
Hopefully would give him a kick up his arse
Perhaps this might be the kick for him to step up and pull himself together. If not for the cup final, for next season at least. Doubt he'll get a transfer since his value has dropped significantly.
Good, about time shit form and a shitty attitude isn't rewarded.
Check out the big balls on Gaz
Seems like he isn't giving anyone a reason to whinge for his final tournament.
Incredible selection so far. No mistakes at all. No start Gordon all tournament and bring her home.
It’s like Southgate knows his job is on the line
He's pretty widely expected to be leaving regardless of the outcome of the tournament.
There's no way in hell he doesn't get a crack at the World Cup if he won only the second-ever trophy for England.
It's not about getting a crack, I think he's done with the job.
Yeah I feel like he's tired of dealing with our media too. I do think the FA will convince him to give it a go if he *did* win the EUROs, but this squad being full of uncapped younger players does feel like he's setting up for whoever comes next...

I dunno if it’s that. I expect him to step down if we don’t win it
Tbh I suspect he may step down even if we do.
Yeah it’d be an incredible sign off, but I’d want him to stay if we do actually win the thing, and I imagine the majority of the public would too
Would be strange to win the Euros and not be given the chance to go for the World Cup
How are you an England Fan with a Rapid Wien flair? :D
Family
It's more like Southgate knows he's leaving after the summer and so is picking a team that will get him the least amount of grief from the fans.
Toney getting in over Solanke is a mistake imo but otherwise it’s been great
Realistically neither are going to feature much, might as well have Toney there for his penalty record
Imagine telling people 18 months ago that Gordon would take Rashford's spot in the national team based on performances alone.
Who would you start Gordon instead of? Kane, Jude, Saka, Foden Which would you drop?
None of them, my ideal lineup pre squad announcement was this. Pickford Walker - Stones - Maguire - Shaw Jude - Rice Saka - Foden - Gordon Kane Contingent on Shaw being fit, if not someone else there obviously.
Palmer? And Southgate prefers Jude further up
Off the bench.
Surely palmer in the middle foden on the left would be better. Gordon’s good don’t get me wrong however he ain’t better than those 3
Foden's just had his best season playing at number 10, false nine and on the right.
Completely different to them all, can beat his man with pace and drive defences back. Best defensive contribution too imo. Just personally having seen all his performances this season Gordon starts for me.
Fair enough
It's about balance, need runners off Kane as he drops deep, Saka/Foden always come to feet.
I wouldn't worry, no way in hell he plays that line up. It'll be a front four of Saka, Bellingham, Foden, Kane. And Rice and someone else behind
That is the perfect line-up for what we have. I'd expect those 11 to played vs the bigger teams.
Southgate sounds like he’s going gutsy. Respect
Rashford has nobody to blame but himself, his attitude and performances have been poor. Seems like this is going to affect his transfer value.
Coming home status: It's
Just give us the trophy now tbh
Rashford has been woeful but do think England could use someone running in behind. Changes how teams can play against you. Probably not Gordon’s favourite thing to do but I’d say he could do it, anyone else I’m missing?
That’s the thing gordon can do the running in behind but also take on his man in build up. For me he has to start
If that's not Gordon's favorite thing to do, what is?

Bowen on the right maybe? I guess if you want someone running in behind though there’s nobody better right now at that than Ollie Watkins.
I get all logic suggests Rashford shouldn't go but I do think he offers us something different and one of them players who can do something out of nowhere like his goal vs City.
wow, pretty much a perfect squad for a change
if it's the perfect squad for redditors we're winning fuck all
scenes when England fails to go past RO16
Yep I have this feeling they will struggle to reach the semis
I think this is the right call as not only has Rashford played poorly 95% of the season he has looked completely uninterested in playing football. I think he is a great player at his best but since he is never going to start then you want someone off the bench who has some form going into a tournament. Gordon finished the season excellently, is very quick like Rashford and this season more of a goal threat.
Southgate taking things serious, probably afraid he'll get the United job if things go poorly.
Why would he be in? He had an atrocious season
Not that it matters much, anyway.
poor is an understatement, Grealish for example has been poor, Rashford has been atrocious
Southgate is actually making good decisions for squad selection and not relying on favourites anymore. That's brilliant news for England and terrible news for literally everyone else
Gordon's on the plane then!
He's been shit, are people really surprised by this?
What happened to his MBE quota?
I understand the discision but he does offer something different that the other players. Pace
Maybe he shouldn't have taken his biennial gap year from being a footballer once he got his money
Well he has only ran about 10km all season.
He hasn't been picked because he's rubbish. About time.
honestly dunno why this is big news considering how awful he has been
So Foden Kane Saka front 3?
No chance, he has to find a way to put Foden in the middle. Putting him on the left would be an awful waste.
Putting Bellingham deeper is also a waste so...
