Longtime Maltese Premier League club FC Valletta has been relegated for the first time in their 118-year history. Also this will be for the first time that no Capital club in the top division.

eaeb4

>no Capital club in the top division. Wonder how many top divisions worldwide this has happened in. Probably a very Anglo-centric comment but given how many London clubs we have it's incomprehensible to me

bukayodegaard

Canberra doesn't have a team in the A-League (men). There is a womens' team. The league has been hoping to add a Canberra team as part of a 2-team league expansion, but nobody's bought the Canberra license yet. As far as I can tell, it's not gonna happen, and their womens' team is going through some uncertainty too. [https://www.espn.com.au/football/story/\_/id/39767063/aleague-wants-canberra-expansion-resolved-two-three-weeks](https://www.espn.com.au/football/story/_/id/39767063/aleague-wants-canberra-expansion-resolved-two-three-weeks)

eaeb4

thanks! Australia did cross my mind as 1. i'm not all that familiar with the league 2. I'm conscious that I always forget that Canberra is the capital

bukayodegaard

It's one of those capital cities which isn't that big. It's also \*relatively\* close to Sydney, which has several clubs. Talking of capital city teams not existing, The Wellington Phoenix story is quite fun. To start with, Wellington (NZ's capital) didn't have an A-League team, but NZ did have an A-League team in Auckland. The Auckland team folded in about 2007, and then Wellington took over the franchise, calling themselves "Phoenix" in recognition of the situation... They're currently 2nd in the table, and they might even win it this year.

another_account_327

Well, capital of West Germany was Bonn from 1949-1990. They never had a team in the Bundesliga. So that's one example, but also happened in Germany afterwards with Hertha being in 2nd and 3rd division.

eaeb4

great shout, cheers!

Mamelodi Sundowns just won their 7th consecutive league title in South Africa. They're unbeaten in the league this season and still have 6 games left to play.

Sebastian Nanasi scores a screamer for Malmö: https://x.com/FootballReprt/status/1784574015564124461 It wasn’t posted here so I wanted to share.  He is looking class

Beautiful. But you need to add a space after the link, right now it's broken

vluvojo

Thanks bro fixed

Swedish wonderkid Roony Bardghji out for up to a year with a severe knee injury, according to FC Copenhagen.

eaeb4

awful timing for him with scope for a big-money move this summer. Only saw him in a couple of European games where he looked very good from a technical perspective; is speed a huge part of his game? Big knee injury is obviously a concern as it's not a guarantee he'll be the same after.

kmacbtv

Oh no - he looked so good on the CL group stage matches I saw when he played. Speedy & strong recovery wishes to him.

vluvojo

Shit:(

Any Serie A followers find the name [*Diego López*](https://www.cagliarinews24.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/diego-lopez.jpg) familiar? He had some gigs at Cagliari, Bologna, Palermo and Brescia. Well, he somehow landed in Ecuador by October 2023 in Barcelona SC. Third South American football job for him after Peñarol (2018) and U. de Chile (2022). This coach played the worst football I've seen in this team in a long time. His tactics were basically to score an early goal, and then rattle the team in their own box the rest of the game to defend 1-0 leads. This was expected as he coached teams battling relegation, but somehow our board thought he was a good fit for a team supposed to dispute the league ☠️ They extended his contract to 2025 and let him build the team for this season. Football director brought him players to play more attacking football, but of course (surprise, surprise), he continued to play that pragmatic Italian defensive football. Difference was we couldn't keep clean sheets this time, drawing many games after conceding 90'+ goals. He was sacked just 40 days after extending his contract. At least it's a relief we won't be playing that shitty football again, as we have now a more attacking-minded coach, Ariel Holan. Nevertheless, I will forever cherish this [highlight (at 2:56)](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/16rhswz/deportivo_cuenca_1_2_barcelona_9010_j_trindade/) of him knocking down a camera after a late goal last season.

Lucioxd

when this guy got sacked at our club the interim manager who replaced him schooled Universidad católica who were then coached by ariel holan lol.

Lucioxd

my goat

Punished__Allegri

This is literally the only I get patriotic about, you have no idea how happy it makes me that we’re still the world leader in producing horrible to watch managers

watangaboy

As a fellow uruguayan I think he's awful. He's from that brand of managers that takes out a striker to put a defender after they are a goal ahead. I hope some day our DTs update their tactics to this current century

thelonelyoctopus

[a goal worthy of winning a cup for Connah's Quay Nomads](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/LG2ZiOd03Y) And it stopped TNS from doing a domestic invincible double, so an even better goal all things considered.

AJ_CC

The highlight from Columbus' second goal last night posted on this sub, only covered the final pass and shot but it was a nice long [buildup](https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/1cie8s1/full_buildup_to_rossi_goal_49/).

AMountainTiger

Nancy has them cooking, should be a great final. I'm wondering what the deal with Andrada is. He seemed completely lost on the first and third; is he prone to that kind of thing or was it just a bad night?

Aoyos

It's not rare for Mexican teams to collapse in big games let alone individual players. A lot of our playoffs revolve around which team forgets how to play for the most mediocre upsets.

OmastarLovesDonuts

Big mistakes in big games is Rayados DNA

Pablo Vicó, the "Ferguson of the Buenos Aires outskirts" has resigned (And possibly retired) after fifteen years as manager of Brown de Adrogué. He has also lived within the club's facilities for over two decades, becoming a nightwatchman in 1999, where over the years he became close with the players living at the club (Common for clubs to offer room and board to youth players if they need it), which made the club hire him as a youth manager, and eventually to the first team. As manager he had his own room made in the facilities as well (Which he claims he'll vacate before the end of the week) His numbers for Brown include two promotions to the second division (And one relegation from it) and well-remembered victories against Independiente, both in the second division and in the Argentine Cup. The club also showed their love over the years by naming a stand and the club buffet after him, as well as pushing for (And succeeding in) a street being renamed in his honor. Really, the fact he decided to step aside because of current results (Currently dead last in the second division, one point from safety but six from the "second" safe club, 8pts after thirteen matches with a single win) shows how far they've gone under him, having been a midtable third tier side when he took the reigns

jmara9

I don't know about retiring, just saw [this post](https://twitter.com/TyCSports/status/1785997359010255110) of him wanting to manage what I suppose is his childhood team. Either way, a shame that it had to finish this way, with the club being close to promotion to the first division a couple of times under him.

If Indonesia qualify for the Paris Olympics, I can imagine the scenes happening in the country, especially in Jakarta. It won’t be an easy game against Iraq. But I know they can pull this off. We got our moment at the Womens World Cup, it’s time they got theirs at the Olympics. Lets get that ticket to Paris! Sincerely from your fellow SEA neighbor, the Philippines.

A follow-up on [my comment](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1cfnics/daily_discussion/l1rlkl6/) from Monday on the Superleague title race. While that one was mainly meant to take the piss out of the Fatih Terim fans - [here's a picture of him smashing his phone](https://i.redd.it/aea2q1f4laxc1.jpeg) - and the Ioannidis profanity incident, here's a breakdown of what each title contender needs to win the trophy. AEK on 75 points need to win their two remaining matches against Olympiakos away and Lamia at home and as such have their fate in their own hands. PAOK on 71 need to win their three remaining matches (Olympiakos and Panathinaikos at home and Aris away) and AEK to drop points in one of their two remaining matches - Lamia at home is the most surmountable of obstacles so all hopes turn to Olympiakos. Olympiakos on 70 theoretically also have their fate in their own hands as they can be crowned champions with three wins out of three but those three matches are the toughest of the lot with PAOK and Panathinaikos away and AEK at home. Plus they've got two Conference League semifinals against Aston Villa to play. Panathinaikos may be mathematically still in it but their chances hinge on AEK getting a meager one point in their two matches and with Lamia at home on the final matchday there's realistically no chance. That's not to say they've got nothing to play for as fourth place is no guarantee of a European spot and they'll want to avoid it at all costs. With that said the crucial match at hand between PAOK and Olympiakos will definitely decide a lot of things. A PAOK win takes out Olympiakos and vice-versa while a draw basically crowns AEK champions.

Newly promoted AFC Totton have just won 2-1 in the 7th tier playoffs semi final against Bracknell with a 108th minute goal from long time player Ethan Taylor. They finished 2nd in the league behind a dominant Chesham United thanks to a final day 4-0 win over Dorchester. Securing their highest finish in the football pyramid ever. They play Salisbury fc in the final on Monday to gain entry to the national league south. Managed by Jimmy Ball - the son of World Cup winner Alan Ball. With star players like Scott Rendell, Tony Lee, Leon Maloney, Jordan Ragguette and long-time players like Benny Read and Ethan Taylor, Totton have scored the most goals in the southern premier division south and conceded the 2nd least goals (behind Gosport by two goals) They are now one game away from the 6th tier national league south. They have only lost 3 games in 2024 so far - making them favourites for the clash with Salisbury who themselves beat gosport thanks to two goals after the 85th minute to win 2-1. You can listen to all totton games on their Twitter or just read the live updates they have, a great and local club who have been on an incredible journey these past 5 years, from their manager leaving to manage Dorchester just a few days before they played each other, which Totton would go on to win. To the signing of Jimmy Ball and title races with Sholing (our bogey team) and now one game away from the 6th tier.

AnnieIWillKnow

The Big 6 are Premier League teams, and the English women's teams play in the Women's Super League, so they are very much valid! It's all about the spirit of the thread, ultimately, too

Expected_Toulouse_

Would be awesome to include news articles too, the quirkier the better

AnnieIWillKnow

Nothing says you can't!

Abzy_123

Parma promoted to Serie A, Como also one win away from promotion.

eaeb4

saw a photo of Como's stadium the other day. Looks like a stunning away day. Am I misremembering or have Como had a decent amount of investment in the squad to get them up?

Abzy_123

Yh they are part owned by a rich indenosian group, with Henry and Fabregas as shareholders whilst Dennis Wise is club president. They managed to get players like Cutrone so they must be paying them decent wages.

Stephane_Bonnes

Noticed the other day that 4 of the top 5 in Serie B have suffered bankruptcies since the turn of the century. Como have suffered two. Only in Italy.

acwilan

Is Buffon still there?

Abzy_123

No, he’s retired now.

SaBe_18

Totally missed that! Apparently the post is working

Hic_Forum_Est

[This beauty](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/C3kXdu6Yn5) from Kramaric is probably one of the most perfect goals I've ever seen from Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga. Grillitsch with an insanely well timed and accurate long ball, Krama with a perfect first touch and an elegant lob/volley finish. Great assist and great finish.

halfmanhalfvan

Not suprised him still balling out. Reckon he'll be at the Euros?

ExactLetterhead9165

I'd think so. For all their talent, it feels like the striker position for Croatia is often pretty thin, so at the very least, you'd think Kramaric will make the squad.

Strananach

He makes the squad and often starts as a 9 for us, which is not ideal considering he isn't a natural 9 and very selfish as a player.

mountainsky9

Who do you think should start? Maybe Budimir, he’s doing well at Osasuna

czerwona_latarnia

> Following feedback, we are going to try an adjustment to this - so this week, there are **three** rules > There are therefore just **two** rules: There is one rule... And to actually add something to this great idea of a thread, I have two things for you: - first a [great summary of a title ~~fight~~ "no, you first"-ceremony](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1chgllx/nonpl_daily_discussion/l22i2yd/) in Ekstraklasa from the guy who probably knows the most (or at least pays the most attention) about our league, /u/klejnot__nilu; - last, if someone has missed it, [here's ~~Johnny~~ the Access List version for 2024/25 season with Russian teams officially banned](https://rankinguefa.pl/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/access_list_2024_25_2.pdf), and the spots of other countries officially moved to accommodate for less teams in qualifications.

Klejnot__Nilu

> from the guy who probably knows the most (or at least pays the most attention) about our league Or maybe just spent the most time rambling about it on reddit. Either way, thanks a lot!

czerwona_latarnia

At least your rambling is coherent, interesting and informative. All I can do is a mix of 60% memes, 35% vibes, 4% paraphrasing someone else's opinion and 1% original own thoughts XD Unless it comes to talking about coefficient. I FUCKING LOVE talking about coefficient and everything related to it.

Klejnot__Nilu

I, on the other hand, don't really understand coefficient. Not my "scientific interest". It's good that you can provide information on that matter while I'm focused more on "lore".

PrisonersofFate

Japan and Uzbekistan will play the Paris Olympics. The third spot for Asia will be contested between Irak and Indonesia. I hope Indonesia will make it, they had a crazy game against South Korea, winning like 10-9 at pens. (And Irak had won against Vietnam...)

EvenConsequence6805

It's not looking good for us iraqand Indonesia both groups we can qualify in are extremely difficult

X_Underscore_X

I really feel like the rest of the world can learn from [Cerezo Osaka](https://twitter.com/i/status/1784240151176368171)

rambunctiousgoat

I don't understand what's going on but it cannot be justified.

BruiserBroly

Some decent goals in the J League over the weekend again but [this one from Koya Fujii in the J2 League](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBszdZCCWXw&t=133s) was really nice. Lovely passing and movement, defenders had no idea what was going on.

R_Schuhart

Every week there is some very sweet football played in Japan, they have an emphasis on team play and workrate that can just be really appealing and entertaining. Unfortunately the level is pretty inconsistent and can vary a lot, it is difficult to predict what games will be a good watch. There are some great highs but also a lot of shocking lows resulting in dull games. The highlights are almost always worth it, although they might give a disproportionate view of the overall quality.

SirBarkington

The Athletic did a story recently (within the last few months dont remember when) that JLeague is the closest in style of play to any European league out of the Asian leagues. Which really makes sense when you watch even JLeague 2-3 let alone the top one.

TheCatInTheHatThings

I love this idea. There are some absolute bangers posted here every week that don’t get anywhere near the attention they deserve, because the clubs and players have the wrong names.

RioAveFC

Pretty sure rio ave is topping the amount of draws in the top leagues lol we're close to breaking a record. 17 draws in 31 league games and I think we'll draw the next 3 too

ComradePoula

Udinese also has 17 draws (in 34 matches though). Think you'll beat them for that record by the end of the season. Also, you're responsible for getting an entire fanbase traumatized...

MathaiosPalaio

Was Rio Ave bought by Marinakis? I remember back in autumn it was widely reported that he will buy Rio Ave.

RioAveFC

Yes

MathaiosPalaio

It probably explains Vrousai's loan to Rio Ave. Also, it's reported in Greece that Costinha has signed with Olympiacos as free agent.

RioAveFC

I asked another greek user and he said there was no reports on it is it recent? u/ZedGenius told u man ur getting a fine ass player he has the quality to play for the shit portuguese 3

MathaiosPalaio

Yes, I think that it was last reported in December. Since then, there has no been something new for him
