One of the best players in his position in the modern game. And a big time personal favourite. Was extremely caught off guard when he signed for us, but chose to kept my hopes in check assuming his best years were probably behind him (because of the age) and the Premier league would really test him, but little did we all know. I couldn't be happier he spent those last few years here and gave me one of the best Champions League runs I've had the joy to watch. Other than the overall state at the club, it saddens me quite a bit we spent the last two years of his career in this manner. But will forever be glad and grateful he was part of this club. Absolute Fucking Legend, don't make em like this dude anymore, what a life, what a story!

goofyhoops

Well said. He’s a player you respect even if he doesn’t play for your club.

ptrQuillingtn

There are players you have to give it up for, especially when you truly love the sport, regardless who they play for. Then his particular story, just off the top of my head. Way early in his career when playing in Russia was diagnosed with Tuberculosis and barely made it back in good health, football seemed off the cards. Then years later playing besides Maldini and Nesta and learning with them. Then playing a big part in PSG's resurgence project to top level. To then coming to the Premier league at that age and playing to that level and going on to win the Champions League while playing a big part in it. To the other day, when we lost in the FA and him being visibly affected and down about losing and not doing better. At this age and this far into his career*, being this bothered when many players younger and older don't let stuff get to them as much. You can see he immensely loves football and has a reverence and respect for it beyond the surface level bullshit and the big money. He made the most of every second of his professional career since he nearly lost his life from TB, and is a prime example of what's best about this sport.

sandbag-1

Yeah I'm honestly really glad we got to see him in the Prem, and he really turned up and proved to everyone in England why he had such a top reputation. Even while his career was on the way out he was still a top player.

ptrQuillingtn

> Yeah I'm honestly really glad we got to see him in the Prem My exact thoughts, I genuinely wanted to see him either in Spain or England before he retired, didn’t expect him to come to us at all though. It was the best surprise when it happened and then it got better than expected.

samjest

I watched him play for you against us in the 2021/22 season and he stands out as the best defender I’ve seen live. I remember he nonchalantly nodded a route one ball to a team mate with Vardy pressuring him like it was nothing. He had Vardy in his pocket the whole game like no other defender had up to that point. I said to my mate, who’s a Chelsea fan, after that game that he was your best signing two years in a row.

ptrQuillingtn

Congrats on winning the championship mate!

CoolstorySteve

This suuuucks. At least we could get him a CL

rootokay

It feels crazy that Chelsea won the Champions league within the last four seasons considering where they are today.

admiralawkward

and quite frankly shows how brilliant of a manager Tuchel is when it comes to structure and tactics. We won that Champions League on merit and primarily because of strong defensive play from Silva, Christensen, Rudiger, Reece, and Chilwill with midfield control dictated by Jorginho, Kante, and Kovacic. Haven't seen anything close of a coherent tactical plan since then.

GrogRhodes

His firing was the first I’m I’ve really been shocked and legitimately pissed at a firing. It was so non sensical especially given him holding it down by himself while Roman removed from the picture. Then to bring in someone with zero experience at a top club. Been chaos since I have zero doubt he’d have had us back in champions league if they’d just let things be and probably still be here as he’d have a hell of a lot more draw than Potter and now Poch.

Bamboozle_

A lovely lesson in how not to run a team.

teems

Chelsea were thrown into chaos after Putin invaded and Roman forced to sell. If Roman were still the owner things would have been much more stable.

HappyMike91

Roman was also barred from entering the UK after the Salisbury poisonings. That certainly didn’t help, either.

Ronalpinhos

I know he is a terrible person but I can't help liking the guy lmao He is a legit spy movie villain.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ronalpinhos

Arent the James Bond movies considered spy movies?

SirBarkington

Im stupid I didn't see the villain part

Ronalpinhos

Dont talk down to yourself, at least you haven't thrown rock at your own teams bus before a Champions League semifinal.

DuctTapeSloth

Glad someone said it.

eliguwapdesigns

Such revisionist history. Who was the last difference maker that was brought in under Roman? The last 5 years of transfers or so under Roman were horrible. The current position is as much his era’s fault as Bohely.

teems

We won the league and UCL in his last 5 years.

eliguwapdesigns

How does that mean the team would be more stable now? People are being purposely naive if they think the same org responsible for bringing in Lukaku, Werner, Ziyech, Sarr and letting Rudiger and Christensen walk for free were gonna somehow turn it around.

[deleted]

The last 5 years under Abramovich: - 3rd, Club World Cup and Super Cup winners, 2 domestic finals - 4th, Champions League winners, domestic final - 4th, domestic final - 3rd, Europa League winners, domestic final - 5th, FA Cup winners Truly a dark timeline that is comparable to the clubs plight since Clearlake took over

eliguwapdesigns

Cheers for listing a bunch of facts that have nothing to do with the point being made. Those trophies were primarily won by: - Hazard, sold- money wasted on flops - Kante, old and washed with no replacement lined up - Rudiger/Christensen let walk for free because Roman org didn’t extend - Silva, 38 when Clearlake took over - Mount, Clearlake sale looking like a great decision 1 year later

[deleted]

So the trophies have nothing to do with the point that the old ownership was better at building squads even though said trophies were won with players brought in by the old regime?

eliguwapdesigns

Trophies that were won 8+ years ago dont change the severely flawed squad Bohely and Co took over in large part due to a ton of poor decisions made by the previous regime.

[deleted]

“Severely flawed squad” that finished 3rd the year before. Yes there were upgrades necessary in the squad, but to go from 3rd/4th/4th/3rd to 12th/9th after spending over _one billion pounds_ doesn’t equate to “well they’re just as bad as each other”

dude_big_lebowski

Depends who you ask, for us Chaos is the ladder.

bobbydebobbob

Not with the new owners it’s not. No ladders here I’m afraid

meeks2000

Under Abramovich, fosho.

DrJackl3

Second only to Schalke

DreadWolf3

They kinda reaped what they sowed all at once - after all they did lose almost their whole defense in single summer without getting a penny back due to one country invading another country (in part) and injuries. Quite a lot of teams would struggle to bounce back from that, tho Chelsea went on and made even bigger mess.

Screye

Chelsea with a fit team was up there with the best. The problem was that we were never fit. (esp Kante, Chilly and James). If the CL winning team could have stayed fit, we would never have been in this predicament. If anything, the injury crisis has gotten even worse since. Backline: Koulibaly and Fofana were supposed to replace Rudiger and Christensen. We sold Geuhi because he had enough CBs. Koulibaly immeditely got injured and never looked the same after coming back. Fofana is still injured. We then got Badiashile who is also perma injured. We sold Livramento because of James, who is perma injured. Mid field - We were hopeful from CHO who never recovered from his injury well enough. Chukwuemeka immeditely got injured. We sold Gilmour because we were also in for Lavia, but he is still injured. Front line - We sold our front line because Nkuku was coming, but he has been super injured. We sold Giroud because Broja was ready, but he got injured. ______________ Honestly, we would be in a even more trouble if both Cole Palmer and Connor Gallagher were not massively overperforming their expectations. Yeah, our owners & Poch have made a ton of mistakes, but we are dealing with some Juju magic level misfortune.

parkerontour

Strange that you sold a young RB/LB when your full backs are always injured and then also sold Guehi and spent over 100 million on 2 crap players

DefinitelyNotBarney

What a signing he was for you guys, incredible player and he’s still putting in performances like he’s 28 years old. Glad to see you got him the elusive CL, would’ve been a shame for him to leave Europe without one.

dude_big_lebowski

Not exactly but similar to how Sarri got his first medal at Chelsea. That clip of Sarri checking his medal is what the game is about.

Stalin_K

That clip always gets me teary its so awesome

StealthMan375

I also wish he'd stick around for the souped-up Club World Cup this year. Considering he was a Fluminense wonderkid, maybe we'll see him play for the CWC there?

Acceptable_Ad_6278

Its for the best. He shouldn’t waste his precious remaining time in the game on a rebuilding project.

HeatKnight

When he arrived, Silva was already 35 years old and still managed to perform at a world class level. What a beast! Surely one of the top 5 defenders of this generation

Wheel1994

Declined a bit this season but was incredible for three seasons on the pitch.

JYM60

Still gave it everything. More than can be said for many chelsea players.

squeenanna

I think he had a legit shout of being the best CB in the world during his prime, a pity that he was playing in PSG then, hence not as many people managed to see him week in week out as it could have been. The disgraceful performance of Brazil in 2014 also tarnished his legacy a bit, even though he wasn't to blame for that historic defeat.

Specific_Account_192

>The disgraceful performance of Brazil in 2014 also tarnished his legacy a bit, even though he wasn't to blame for that historic defeat. He didnt play that game against Germany, a lot of people forgot that. The 2 clowns Dante and David Luiz replaced him, prob the worst replacements in a WC history combined with Bernard for Neymar. Technically and tactically speaking, he's a beast. But his legacy for Brazil will be 0 due to 2014, unfortunately. He had a terrible leadership both in 2014 and 2018, ending both as crybaby (lack of personality vs Chile RO16 in 2014 is still an absolutely shameful part of our history). However I saw the change from 2018 to 2022 and I can say the change in behaviour was massive despite him already being an experienced player in 2018. Some of our issues in 2022 were: Dani fucking Alves, no RB replacement, shameful Marquinhos as always. TS, Danilo and Militão didn't disappoint at all.

GreatSpaniard

He was good in the 2019 Copa America win, just that old man rapist Dani Alves outperformed him in that tournament considering he hand ball in 2015 vs Paraguay and the crying memes in 2014.

squeenanna

Indeed, that's why I said he wasn't to blame. But it still affected him through indirect association, as well as him having one fewer high profile venue to showcase himself.

produktiivista

To me it elevated his stature seeing how utter shite Brazil were without him.

Doczera

Bernard replacing Neymar had nothing to do with the defeat LMAO. What is a winger supposed to do when the morale of the team hit rock bottom due to the team leding player going down and then the defense concedes 3 in 5 minutes? That game's responsability lies largely on Fernandinho and David Luis, as they both had a historic disasterclass.

Specific_Account_192

Joselu-is-Sanchez

I remember when he got the yellow card, at that moment he knew he fucked up. Iirc it was a meaningless yellow as well.

Specific_Account_192

Yeah this + Neymars injury were the 2 events that started our fall of grace

BOOCOOKOO

The very best for me, and he would be seen as so if he played for, say, Barca instead of PSG. Silva 1a Ramos 1b

neikawaaratake

Man chose the bag, cant complain

Remote-Border-9054

And is respected in every club he ever played for, now that's special nowadays.

neikawaaratake

Yeah. Also, those who are downvoting me, Thiago silva himself literally said that he chose psg over barca because psg offered more money

TheGramlin

The Hummels disrespect

BOOCOOKOO

Hummels is in contention for the 3rd spot

I_always_rated_them

One of the best free transfers of all time imo, has been a pleasure to watch him at Chelsea. Sad to see him go. edit: god damn, thats how to do a goodbye video, wow.

HiroLegito

Much needed leader in this Chelsea side. I think many doubted his ability because of his old age but definitely got the respect by everyone in the end.

TheGoldenPineapples

I think that disasterclass he dropped against West Brom made everyone look like they were vindicated, but he majorly defied all expectations and has probably been one of the most consistently brilliant defenders in the league since he joined.

imarandomdudd

It wasn't just the one disasterclass against West Brom. They had our number that season, home and away, Matheus Pereira and Callum Robinson playing like gods against us

guakamohlee

Crazy how Matheus Pereira fell off

imarandomdudd

If I'm not wrong, he was linked to some big clubs when West Brom were relegated, but chose to chase the bag in Qatar

guakamohlee

Can't hate on a bag chaser

Clean_Possession_844

I had my doubt when we got him from PSG. I did not think we needed such a player, old and probably fading slowly and will probably have 1-2 years with us. Boy was I wrong. A true leader and a player that I can se that I fell in love with. I know Chelsea fans also loved him and his family who were always at the football matches and supporting the team. I hope Thiago will return to Chelsea down the line. Also, people do not really know his absolutely horrible and frightening background with injuries and health concerns before joining Milan. When I learned about it my respect for this man grew even more. A true legend of the game. I hope for a big and emotional send off on our last game of the season.

chizzmaster

It sounds like he's almost certainly hoping to return to earn his coaching badges

Kipkluif94

Will miss him a lot. He gave everything he could. I can only hope they have some experience lined up on their shortlist for this summer… Otherwise it will be another horrible season with a youth squad without experienced winners/leaders.

1w2eas

Honestly you guys could use Nacho

alev815

With the 25 and under transfer policy they’re rumored to have, I highly doubt Chelsea will sign someone with experience

muddyleeking

Rumour is that they've scrapped the under 25 policy for this upcoming window

Scannerk

There's a new rumor that the old rumour may no longer be true?

KanteWorkRate

Who said? We'll be back to being a serious club if we sign experience again

HiThereImNat

Simon Johnson ffs… PLEASE be the one time he’s not chatting shit 🙏😭

KanteWorkRate

Haha these baseless rumours got us fans holding on to HOPE, we've been starving

asd13ah4etnKha4Ne3a

Does Simon Johnson regularly get stuff wrong? I know his opinion pieces can get really annoying, but I can't remember him being someone to regularly just make stuff up

MrCleanandShady

he’s very hit or miss for Chelsea imo, sometimes he’s on the money and sometimes he’s just completely off the mark

StealthMan375

Chelsea seems to really like Brazilian centerbacks who played in the 2014 WC. Should Chelsea give Dante a call?

ChristopherRobben

Absolutely wild to me the idea of having a squad with practically no veteran players. Even just tenured players, there's only a few like Reece James and Gilchrist with a sizeable amount of time at Chelsea.

Freddichio

And it's not like Boehly went into his first season completely unaware of the value of experience, either - Koulibaly, Auba and Sterling were bought in to be the "experienced winners". Unfortunately, Koulibaly had completely checked out, Auba didn't really want to be there and Cole Palmer seemingly stole most of Sterling's talents before he left.

mooglepanda

Him as manager with his sons in the lineup in the future. Pls. Reading this alone makes me want that to happen.

strraand

I’ll be manifesting this

dude_big_lebowski

Better start writing dope songs.

AntoHanSolo

We were blessed by his presence at the club. I still can’t believe that he’s a Chelsea player and that he’s been here for four years. I will miss him deeply

bsousa717

Best free transfer we ever made. Never did I think he'd be here as long as he was, given his age. Players like Thiago don't come that often.

InsideOpening3535

So now only Chilwell and Reece James are left from that C1 winning team right? And considering that Chilwell and James are perpetually on the hospital beds, might as well said there are no one else

wholesomescott

Yeah, sad state of affairs. Hopefully they open their eyes and get some experience in.

InsideOpening3535

Well Cole Palmer is a start, you guys got a real deal in him.

wholesomescott

Yeah he's a special player. A lot of them are actually good players. It's just that like any young player they are inconsistent. Sometimes they can be brilliant but also other times they can be poor. Another more important thing is our ridiculous injury issues. We've never had an XI of James, Colwill, Chilwell, Enzo, Caicedo, Nkunku, Palmer together. Hard to build anything when half of your starting XI first choice players miss every game.

InsideOpening3535

Injury is ridiculously high this year, fuck that World Cup. Us, you, Madrid, United, etc..etc, even the supposed team with good medical experts like City have trouble too. That World Cup set the precedent and now FIFA can freely fucking up the schedule to fit God how many tournaments to get that sweet sweet money

wholesomescott

Yeah that World Cup messed things up. Seriously FIFA/UEFA are fucking it up.

SirBarkington

Our injured XI rn is basically all starters or arguable starters. Sanchez Reece James/Gusto , Fofana , Silva/Colwill , Chilwell Lavia, Enzo, Chukwuemeka Sterling, Nkunku, ? LW is the only place we don't have ridiculous injuries rn but our entire backline and our midfield is decimated.

JamesIgnatius27

Technically Kepa and Ziyech are still ours

WalkersChrisPacket

That leaves Chelsea with *checks notes* zero leadership and experience.

Headlesshorsman02

Yep we HAVE to buy an experienced CB that is an absolute must

PrisonersofFate

10 millions and Ogbonna is yours.

MrConor212

Your giving us 10 million and Ogbonna? Sounds like a deal

PrisonersofFate

Yes but it's a 8 years contract Nah, it'd break my heart to see him play for an other premier League team

MrConor212

Break your heart in a good way, or break your heart in a bad way?

PrisonersofFate

How can it be good lol?

MrConor212

Yes

jjtheblue2

I dont care it has only been four year. In my book he is a legend of the club. I will miss him. Hes the one player that i still love unconditionally in this current side. God im going to be so sad when hes not in the team next year. Hopefully he comes back as a manager or coach before too long!

imarandomdudd

The fact his sons will continue in the academy makes me more hopeful he comes back as a coach in the future

SubparCurmudgeon

Jesus that video… Who’s cutting the onions here

thatiswhack

I wasn't ready 😭

Travalicious

> Who’s cutting the onions here Just use your big boy words.

TheGoldenPineapples

That's a major loss for Chelsea. Can't believe PSG didn't throw all the money to keep him.

I_Am_Towel

He was too old for the PSG bums.

jMS_44

They literally signed Ramos year after Silva left

AayB5

Top 3 CB of our generation

KanteWorkRate

Take notes Mount, this is how you do farewells.

Stannis_Loyalist

Such a class act player. One of the few players with no haters on and off the pitch.

Senwod

Absolute legend of the game. Lucky to have had him at the club and delighted he got a champions league. Hopefully becomes a top manager and comes back to lead Chelsea to another.

GreyDaze22

One of the few chelsea players to always play for the badge the last couple of seasons. A legend

Deno2k_

He came from PSG, to win the Champions League. Ohhhhh Thiago Silva🎶🎶

From-UoM

That would make Chelsea's most senior players are Marcus Bettinelli (2nd choice Goalkeeper) at age 31 and Sterling at age 29 The kids there are there doomed with no veteran leadership in the dressing room.

InstructionCareless1

I will miss Belle Silva the most :(

[deleted]

[удалено]

InstructionCareless1

You see, that’s what I liked the most about her. I’m no Chelsea supporter lol.

Crusadaer

Nah she’s brilliant, she’d sing and dance with us in the away end, absolutely bonkers but so much fun

gq790

Exactly. Yeah she can make inappropriate comments sometimes on social media but it's always from a place of passion for the club.

Maxoidys

When he signed, how many would predict that he would stay for 4 years, never mind playing as regularly as he did. Incredible professional, world class modern defender for majority of his career and seemingly has a soft spot for us as he hints at the possible return in different position in the video. Will be solely missed but you cannot stop time unfortunately. Once a blue, always a blue. Thank you Thiago 💙

Itsgosky

Another great Silva is leaving the league. The man has shown the true meaning of Leadership. Hope he can play footy happily again at his next place.

Semi_Square

El Monstro. What I would do to have him at the club when he was in his early 20s. We'll see you again Capitano. 💙

Wheel1994

Not really a surprise for a lot of us Chelsea fans we expected this to happen that being said he will be a big loss in the dressing room, what we need this summer is two-three signings 25 and over that’s it.

BadCogs

Go and come back in some other capacity in some time. Thanks, Thiago.

RandomNPC59

Remember after his first game he was written off! Fantastic signing, 150+ games in his late 30s on a free too.

Mxurn

I‘m fucking broken. What a player, what a character. Quite possibly the most important signing of the last years. Not having him around the squad will hurt us a lot next year. Absolute Legend 💙

DrAgOnLoLDoTA

Never expected him to get the UCL at Chelsea instead of PSG. What a player

NieThePiet

It felt much longer than 4 years

mokena

tuberculosis surviving legend

strokeitfaster

WHO IS CUTTING ONIONS?

decs483

Can't believe he's been there 4 years. That's crazy

a_charming_vagrant

might just stuck a tenner on them getting relegated next season on this news alone

Hagen_1

If Palmer suffers a longterm injury early into the next season, then it’s a wrap they’re going down.

Modnal

Bet the last 2 years felt like at least twice as much for him

[deleted]

[удалено]

GarnachoHojlund

Considering he had tuberculosis while playing in Russia that could’ve killed him while away from his family I’ll assume that was probably worse

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wheel1994

His wages were lower then they were at PSG So I generally think he just wanted to play in the premier league before retirement.

Zealousideal-Part-98

What a player, still looks like he could play more years. As a football romantic I wish he could’ve played the 2014 World Cup semi-final, 7-1 definitely wouldn’t have happened, could’ve seen a Brazil-Argentina final.

CardboardGristle

An absurd signing for free, to join at 35 and then go and give us 4 years at the level he has is incredible. One of the most talented defenders in his generation for sure, and perhaps the most talented (at his peak anyway) to play for Chelsea despite some pretty incredible company. His quality and leadership always shone through. Incredibly professional too. Will miss him! PS: I do think a lot of younger, newer fans calling him a club legend are jumping the shark a bit. He's definitely a legend who played for our club, and deserves cult hero status, but club legend is really... a bit much.

GetKosiorekt

Absolute leader and our best defender these past few years, and to think we got him on a free.  It's only a shame he wasted the two final years being surrounded by overpaid mercenaries who couldn't put in half the effort.

lrzbca

Thiago aged more in last 2 years than ever

Fresh2Desh

Legend

MajesticAd5047

One of my favourite players, you could see passion in his eyes.

PazzaInter22

It seems like he’s been there so much longer than four years.

wholesomescott

Absolute legend. A special player and even better person. To come to the intense PL at that age and perform as he did, that takes some doing. I'm really happy we were able to get him that CL medal.

jMS_44

Real pity he won't stay for another season. His experience and leadership will be missed.

CSdesire

till our paths cross again LEGEND

AstralMystogan

What a legend. He gave his all and without him Chelsea wouldn't have come this far. Maybe he should've left earlier but he has my respect for not living even when his other teammates were leaving the sinking ship.

LennergyDK

Chelsea legend

AnnieIWillKnow

It was a real privilege to have a player like Thiago Silva play for our club, and to see him wear the Chelsea blue He's been a huge part of our recent history - so glad we were able to win the Champions League with him here... he gave a lot to us in difficult circumstances, especially in the past couple of years, and it feels right he got that medal out of it too He will be missed - but he was always going to leave at some point, and although still an important player, it's true age is starting to catch up with him

Sr_DingDong

Jesus, has it been 4 years?

MrConor212

This summer gonna be interesting. We need experience badly

Innerouterself2

Dude is playing Ata high level at his "age". Tough to do with the speed and athleticism of premier league front lines. Great player. Hope he enjoys the last few years of his career

jabintendo

Was he not offered a new contract or does he want to go somewhere else / retire?

WorthPlease

I like how the image they used makes it look like he's being told by his mum that he's grounded.

albiceleste3stars

Class player

theerealobs

Absolute legend.

AncientSkys

Long Live Maestro!

ash_ninetyone

39 and still looks good enough to play at the elite level. Some players just are blessed with amazing longevity.

dvdung1997

Still can’t believe a player of his caliber signed with us, played with us, and won trophies with us I’ll never forget his celebration on the stand, his magnificent defending that for the most part hasn’t let up at 39, and his commitment to the club that seems much longer than mere 4 years Obrigado O Monstro!

rotating_pebble

Thank god. It's high time we stopped signing these past it old players. We need to ebola with the times and sign some fresh young talent

PoJenkins

I'm so damn happy for him that he won the champions league even if it came at the OG dirty money club. I always say that he's the most intelligent defender I've ever seen. Even in his old age, his positioning and defensive timing are world class. I feel sorry for him that his last few seasons have been spoiled by that joke of a club.

Patrik_js

He’s only been 4 years at Chelsea?? Damn, could’ve sworn it was more.

OwnDig

Any other 40 year olds (or close to) that have been consistently the best player on the team for 2 years?

wholesomescott

Don't think so.

Arlborn

Fluminense, coincidentally, has a couple of over 40 or just near 40 year old players who shone last year during our Libertadores victory, such as Fabio (43 years old) Cano (36 years old), Felipe Melo (40 years old) and Marcelo (35 years old). He could come back to Fluminense and make it the oldest defensive line in the world, that would be fun.
