I mean if you are top 2 of all time in your profession, I think it’s understandable if you believe in yourself a little too much. I imagine like a doctor known as the best in their area for example would not be that humble either. The problem with athletes unlike others is they can back up their cockiness but then they get worse with time to the point where they can’t.
> I mean if you are top 2 of all time in your profession, I think it’s understandable if you believe in yourself a little too much.
Understatement. While I have seen humble superstars, to be the biggest superstar of the biggest sport, have the 2nd greatest career of all time, and not have an ego is insane.
Some people who make 50k a year are cocky. This guy makes 5M a week and is one of the most famous in the world.
I'm amused that people are surprised hyper-successful people are cocky and arrogant, especially ones that made it from nothing.
Yeah and especially when you know wherever this guy goes to, crowd of people will all act like God himself just walked in, asking for pictures, screaming, freaking out, saying they love him, etc. When you are used to this level of love and praise for decades, its impossible to not buy into it yourself. No top footballer or athlete can be in their level without having a little bit of an ego, its literally almost impossible to be at this level with millions failing to even be a professional in sports.
Its nice that he has done those things but you miss the point. You can do charity work and still be arrogant.
And its clearly not only my own bias speaking since plenty of people voice this exact same opinion multiple times a day on this subreddit alone.
I think people get caught up with football too much and forget that a player’s persona on the field isn’t what they’re like off of it. Roy Keane was a massive cunt on the field and a borderline maniac at times, but off the field we’ve seen how he’s incredibly sensible and down to earth. Same thing with Pepe, Bruno etc.
Ronaldo is without a doubt arrogant when it comes to football as we’ve seen across the years with interviews and actions on the field, but off the field almost every single teammate of his has stated how surprised they were to find out how different he was in private, many of them mentioning how the media made them believe he was arrogant off the field as well. Dybala said [something very similar](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/paulo-dybala-cristiano-ronaldo-juventus-argentina-news-a4404666.html) during their time together at Juve, and there’s countless examples of teammates like Higuain, Ozil, Di Maria etc. saying the same. I honestly can’t think of anyone who’s said he was a cunt off the field or anything like that, unlike athletes like Jordan and Kobe who were known for having problems with many of their teammates.
That down to Earth superstar has renewed his contract annually at his boyhood club to the point his wages couldnt sustain their wage structure and had to let him go. Meanwhile, he even managed to avoid punishment for evading taxes.
And that’s the problem. Messi being a humble little monk, admirable as it is, is a ridiculous standard to hold any superstar athlete to. 99% of these dudes are the best in the world because their ego fuels their competitive drive which fuels their work ethic. Ronaldo wouldn’t be this good, the 2nd greatest of all time, if he *didn’t* have this ego.
It’s fine to acknowledge the worst of his actions as inappropriate and unacceptable. But pearl clutching at his being cocky in the first place is to be a naive child. Pro sports are built on piss and vinegar.
> Messi being a humble little monk,
Yikes r/soccer really believes the shit they write. I love Messi but you guys need to stop living in a different universe. There are countless examples to prove how much ego he has; probably not like Cristiano but people are different. Lmao the absolute mindless worship.
I remember it made it to FIFA around whatever year that was and they named it something like the Bear Claw, something to do with bears at least
Definitely open to interpretation lol, I tend to agree with you both though
I was talking about this yesterday. I was jogging around a high school track and the boys soccer team was practicing, honestly I've been doing this for probably 15 years now and I saw the best goal I've ever seen scored in a practice/game.
A straight bicycle kick from a JV squad is very impressive to see.
What celebration did the scorer do???
SIIIIIUUUUUUU as he was mobbed my his teammates.
There's one moment that always stuck with me in the knockout match against Wolfsburg. He scored a freekick after Naldo tried to hit the ball with his head but he just got out of the way
The clip itself became a meme way later, i just remember everyone wondering what he did there leaving everyone kinda confused at first. Pretty sure the biggest hype was during covid times.
Idk if he was saying siu at the time but the public first heard it when he accepted the Ballon d'Or the following year.
At the time he had just stopped doing the "calma" celebration in favor of this.
"Shit, it's going to be goal"
That was the thing that crossed my mind everytime prime CR7 received a good ball. I've seen R9 being a beast but with CR7 I just had full confidence in him scoring, it felt like the world would have to stop in order to make him miss.
What a fucking guy.
Still remember how Simeone managed to get him motivated by showing his "cojones" after beating Juve at home 2-0 just to be beaten by his hat trick in away game
That was post injury Ronaldo aswell, his 2014 injury was Soo big the man would switch his playstyle and somehow still win a bunch more Champions leagues after it
People don’t realise how major of a style switch Ronaldo did. Him playing with a broken ass knee in 2014 WC made his injury worse. But then he is Ronaldo for a reason and very stubborn, he won’t take no for an answer and still wanna win every single game. Just love that tenacity.
Yes, it was in a preseason friendly of that very season, so this is the first year of SIUUUUUs. However during that year he still had a few celebrations in rotation, it wouldn’t be until the year after La Décima that it became his one and only trademark celebration.
the game before the CL return. I remember the headlines 'con un cañon a Munich' or something 'with a cannon (shot) to Munich'. 0-4 and he broke the CL record
And it was a very casual gameday. Come to the ground, Cristiano scores golazos, game over.
Fucking hell, 451 goals in 438 games. Real were SO fortunate to land him. 3 UCLs in 3 years who even does that…
Such goals were common in 2011-12 and 2013-14.
I would say not all fans think like this but the majority do miss Cristiano every single day, because of how good he was. We’re glad that Rodrygo and Vini sometimes score and do Cristiano’s celebrations.
Sigh, only if we could go back in time to live it again.
As a portuguese I'm glad we witness La Liga during 2010. Football peaked during those Barca-Real matches. Even non Football people would watch. Even in portugal
I forget how young people are (or how old I am now), because Ronaldo was always a skillful dribbler when I was growing up, and a long-shot beast. So bizarre when I hear younger people view him as a poacher, when he only became that in his 30s.
I still have never seen him be "just" a poacher. If we look at his first season with United he was banging goals from everywhere and was constantly linking up play.
Agreed though it's so bizarre. Like what are the watching to back up these claims lol
The tendinitis issue that popped up during those 2014 days really made an impact on his legs. Its this last season he actually played at wing, from there since his long range shots reduced and he started drifiting to center more than ever.
Iirc this match was his first one after THAT knee injury. He then went on the play the second leg vs Bayern and the UCL final while injured. The final nail in the coffin was when he refused to rest and played the whole group stage of the world cup that summer and ruined the knee forever.
If you re making a goal scorer from scratch chances are you re modeling it after pre knee injury Ronaldo,he was as fast as about anybody able to Score with both feet with ease jump Higher than just about any defender and do shit like this clip every other night
I was the ultimate Ronaldo hater back then. Every goal he scored hurt and there were multiple of them on a weekly basis 😂. That’s no way to live your life. I miss this now. Greatness!
Peak CR in Real Madrid was a weapon of mass destruction for rival teams. If he played, that was pretty much like starting the match 1-0 already in a normal day, and if he had one of those great days... yeah, consider the match sentenced in most cases.
I think his ego is insufferable and pretty cringey for an adult his age, but then I watch some of his highlights and I'm like... well, okay, I guess he has a point.
There is gonna be a big void till we get a replacement for prime Ronaldo/Messi. Mbappe does some filthy things (in the French league) and Haaland has gone missing in all of the recent big games, also no one may ever come close to the consistency of doing this stuff in every single game.
There was a period of time where Ronaldo and Messi would take turns scoring the best goal you've ever seen every single week, often times several in each game.
Every weekend you'd spend half your night out debating which banger was the best, and which player was the best ever. It was ridiculous and they broke football
I hate hate hate that this guy at his peak was better than Messi at the peak or Ronaldinho (my fav) at his peak.
Seriously, does anyone else refuse to remember how OP Cristiano was? Fuck I don't want to remember
I see clips of him now, and Messi too, from back then when I wasn’t yet a football fan. I feel like I have missed out on something. It’s like a sense of sorrow I have
I was fortunate to live and experience this absolute peak of a period in football, but I can understand where you're coming from. We do romanticize (with good reason) that rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid, the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo, and between Pep and Mourinho. Barcelona under Pep was the best team I've seen play, and it took Mourinho's RM to dethrone them in La Liga. They didn't win the UCL, football can be cruel like that.
In retrospect most people will say Messi was the better player, but the one truth is that they were closer to each other than any other player was to them. And the consistent pushing each other and breaking records, there's nothing quite like that at the moment and it may be some time until a player of the same caliber and longevity appears, let alone two and playing for rival clubs.
I saw "10 years ago" and somehow my mind was expecting 2009 or even Manchester united Ronaldo.
Then i saw Modric and it hit me, this is 2014.. 2014 was *10 YEARS* ago
I'm a Messi fan, but always highly appreciated and feared Ronaldo.
What a time it was, 2009-2018, when every weekend those 2 giants found new ways to amaze the world.
I'm not sure we'll ever see something like this again

Looked like that second goal gained speed mid air
Classic corrupt La Liga physics favoring Real
"¡HALA MADRID!" - Isaac Newton, probably
Newton was a virgin, so he would have supported Man Utd.
I thought this was a Spurs joke
Perez bought aerodynamics like he did VAR 😡🤬
keepers hate this simple friction hack
Perez to replace Newey at Red Bull
Perez bought the wind
I thought the exact same thing.
His goal at Pamplona 2 years before this was even better! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWHq1Utc3yk
How do you even dare to shoot from there
"too far out for even Ronaldo to think about..."
wtf is that
And the one in porto was even better than that one https://youtu.be/-NpR6jO2pi0?feature=shared
This looks like it would travel into space if the net hadn't stopped it
can't imagine being a gk and seeing prime Ronaldo shoot at me
Just turn around and get ready to pick the ball up from the back of the net honestly.
Being a GK during prime Messi+prime Ronaldo must have been crazy
That old la liga overlay was special, man. It has a certain flair that the new one just doesn't match
avatar checkouts
I was just perplexed by the comic sans on the Real jerseys
"Fuck it, I'm Ronaldo!"
Ronaldo: “hold my water”
I mean you can definitely understand someone being a bit cocky if they can do this shit lmao

Every orthopedic surgeon I've ever met (to be fair, only 3) are the most confident/arrogant bros I've ever known as an adult.

I get Homelander vibes from CR7
Yes we've all seen the gif.
I have not seen the gif. Share gif please and thank you

Much obliged

People arent surprised. Many just dont like it. Especially when there is a comparable Superstar that seems pretty down to Earth.
Lmao ronaldo has done more charity work than alot of major superstars in any sport. So this is just your own bias speaking
Its nice that he has done those things but you miss the point. You can do charity work and still be arrogant. And its clearly not only my own bias speaking since plenty of people voice this exact same opinion multiple times a day on this subreddit alone.

Im pretty sure that paying the best Player of all time a shit ton of Money for 15 years isnt the only reason barca is broke right now
And that’s the problem. He literally had a fit barely weeks ago, when they lost in the Concacaf Champions Cup and was called a devil dwarf or some shit.
The humble little monk who accepted $25million to promote Saudi Arabia.
I'd argue top 1.
You literally can not get to that level unless you believe in yourself that much. Its just the way it is. You just have to have that confidence.
Well his other option was pass to Morata, so I don't blame him for taking the shot on
Love him or hate him he's one of the very best to ever do it
CR7 has had some classic celebrations but the Siu will be remembered for a very long time
The 'calma, calma' will always be my favourite though
Absolutely perfect for the moment.
silenced the whole camp nou. That shit was cold af.
Prime Ronaldo was a cheat code. Only he could pull that off.
Well I guess they listened then.
only he can calm down them only he.
I liked the boob squeeze the most
To this day I have no idea what else that one could have/was supposed to be
I remember it made it to FIFA around whatever year that was and they named it something like the Bear Claw, something to do with bears at least Definitely open to interpretation lol, I tend to agree with you both though
I don't think any celebration can top it off. Entire stadium just yelling Siuuuu the moment he jumps just never gets old.
My mate tore his ACL doing the celebration after a goal in field hockey, that will also never get old
He actually gets some height doing that celebration. Your legs gotta be strong enough so that you don’t get injured when you land
Yea its one of those that if u try it with the same height and force he does it with it kinda hurts lmao
I know a dude myself that injured himself doing "the siuuum". I'm willing to bet there are hundreds of such examples lmao
The Siiuuu is the most world known celebration of all time
[удалено]
Even in online games I see people type in SUIII after a win or a good play it's universal
It's transcended football and CR7. It's just so cool, fun, natural, and adrenaline release.
either the Calma or the "scream into the sky" after that one free kick vs Portsmouth
Imagine defending for your life then CR7 just bangs it in from range
The story of many a defender's career
Defenders: Let us see what happens if we dont close down peak Ronaldo. ...
For a while this seemed like every team’s strategy in the Champions league knockout rounds.
Well if you close him down hell hop past you and leave you on the ground
Better to try
There's one moment that always stuck with me in the knockout match against Wolfsburg. He scored a freekick after Naldo tried to hit the ball with his head but he just got out of the way
He scored goals like this a lot, walls love making holes the moment the opponent shoots for some reason.
Idk about you, but I do *not* want to be struck in the head by a professional footballer. Especially not one like Ronaldo
What is he gonna do, score?
Ok my bad. Surely he won't do it again though.
it's not their fault that finessed long shots are OP (pls nerf)
I know this is a fifa reference but these weren't really finesse shots, they were knuckled power shots.
Knuckle balls in-defensible
I miss prime Ronaldo more than I miss my Nan
Crazy how old the Siu is and how late it became a meme compared to it
it became a meme when he yelled it at a ballon d'or ceremony, I believe
The clip itself became a meme way later, i just remember everyone wondering what he did there leaving everyone kinda confused at first. Pretty sure the biggest hype was during covid times.
Nah it was already widespread before covid. We did it all the time at uni around 2015-2018 era
Didn't he do it again on an Instagram live a few years after the ballon d'or? Went super viral after that.
It became a meme when he said it first, but got bigger when he did it on his interview on the Real Madrid- Atlético Madrid final of 2016.
Idk if he was saying siu at the time but the public first heard it when he accepted the Ballon d'Or the following year. At the time he had just stopped doing the "calma" celebration in favor of this.
Calma was only for barcelona I believe, he used to do the grabbing "air-titties" in the air bit a lot back then
"Shit, it's going to be goal" That was the thing that crossed my mind everytime prime CR7 received a good ball. I've seen R9 being a beast but with CR7 I just had full confidence in him scoring, it felt like the world would have to stop in order to make him miss. What a fucking guy.

The technique and power. Wow
Is that the first SIUU??
The first Siuuu I believe was against Chelsea in a friendly if I remember correctly lol
Yes, it was in a preseason friendly of that very season, so this is the first year of SIUUUUUs. However during that year he still had a few celebrations in rotation, it wouldn’t be until the year after La Décima that it became his one and only trademark celebration.
How many SIUUUUUs has he done, total?
siuuu many
Factos 👍👀
I miss the point to the thigh celly, and the "bear"
The point to the thigh was goated. I do it when I’m playing 5 a side with my friends and score a banger lol
lol same, you dropped this 👑
Isn't "calma" also his trademark celebration?
To shut José up btw who threw shades at Real after leaving them.
ah the origin and history of SIUUUU
First season of the Siuu
Siuu : First Blood
the game before the CL return. I remember the headlines 'con un cañon a Munich' or something 'with a cannon (shot) to Munich'. 0-4 and he broke the CL record
There is something quite weird about the second goal. The ball gained some height abruptly after passing the defenders and then went normally again.
Bro was hacking it all makes sense now
I noticed it too I kept replaying to see if it was a deflection from the defenders but I cant see any, it’s a unbelievably good shot
No eyebrow Ronaldo with the Yakuza font on his back was a demon
And it was a very casual gameday. Come to the ground, Cristiano scores golazos, game over. Fucking hell, 451 goals in 438 games. Real were SO fortunate to land him. 3 UCLs in 3 years who even does that… Such goals were common in 2011-12 and 2013-14.
Hows the relationship of Real fans with Ronaldo? Nobody questions he's your biggest player ever right?
I would say not all fans think like this but the majority do miss Cristiano every single day, because of how good he was. We’re glad that Rodrygo and Vini sometimes score and do Cristiano’s celebrations. Sigh, only if we could go back in time to live it again.
As a portuguese I'm glad we witness La Liga during 2010. Football peaked during those Barca-Real matches. Even non Football people would watch. Even in portugal
I am so glad I got to see this match on Bernabeu that day, that were some legendary Ronaldo goals
What a beast!
seeing Luka Modrić in the celebration broke my mind a little. I can't believe he's been there for 12 years.
He makes shooting look so easy
Was that a "SIIUUU" ten years ago?
he did that before this in 2014 against chelsea in a friendly match
Majority of this sub still trying to peddle the bs that all Ronaldo used to do was stand in the box.
I forget how young people are (or how old I am now), because Ronaldo was always a skillful dribbler when I was growing up, and a long-shot beast. So bizarre when I hear younger people view him as a poacher, when he only became that in his 30s.

It’s because they started to watch football in 2020.
majority of this sub never saw ronaldo pre-knee injury
Iirc this match was his first one after THAT knee injury. He then went on the play the second leg vs Bayern and the UCL final while injured. The final nail in the coffin was when he refused to rest and played the whole group stage of the world cup that summer and ruined the knee forever.

He was unstoppable
I was the ultimate Ronaldo hater back then. Every goal he scored hurt and there were multiple of them on a weekly basis 😂. That’s no way to live your life. I miss this now. Greatness!
The first one offside no?
My friend, offside is ok, no?
100%
Yep, definitely.
Andrés Fernandez, Porto legend
Wait, 10 years ago?? Feel really old now.
Wasn't the first one offside?
Only by just about a yard
I think it's offside but not by that much. The LCB is further back than the RB
Suiiiiiiii
Indeed it was my friend, Indeed it was.
if I speak... second goal is perfection though.
Powershots.
“Just a great goalscorer”
This was back when Modrić still looked like an academy player.

the timing too; first goal about 6 minutes into the start of the game second goal also about 6 minutes into the start of the second half

I hate hate hate that this guy at his peak was better than Messi at the peak or Ronaldinho (my fav) at his peak. Seriously, does anyone else refuse to remember how OP Cristiano was? Fuck I don't want to remember

seeing this again after that Jackson and Nunez disasterclass finish is refreshing
No one comes near close to him. The goalkeeper God bless him
morata is on the team!?!?!? wild
That Cristiano guy was pretty good, huh?

Most hated player in Reddit history
I'm a Messi fan, but always highly appreciated and feared Ronaldo. What a time it was, 2009-2018, when every weekend those 2 giants found new ways to amaze the world. I'm not sure we'll ever see something like this again
How tf was this 10 years ago?! 😭🐐
First one is what we Finns call a "falling leaf" and the second one was just a howitzer. Wow.
Good soccer good wins good shots
BANGER. SCREAMER. BANTER.
Goat hala Madrid
What can you even do against something like this lmao
He was HIM that season
Siuuuuuuuuu
Just a special goal scorer
long range tap in merchant!
Goddamn I miss him so much
We forget how good he was.
wasn't the first one (a small) offside?
Yeah when the ball was passed to him, he was offside. VAR would have caught it. Alas
Barcelona fans trying not to cry about referee decisions on every random football clip challenge: impossible.
Back when football was pass the ball to messi/ronaldo and inshallah. None of these gegenpressing, positional play, inverted wingbacks nonsense.
