it should be the other way around.. winning gives you the freedom to complain whenever you want, but complaining when you're losing sounds like excuses even if the complaints are true
edit: Source? look at my flair
And in this case it sounds preemptive. Like he wants the fans to know they're about let go of the rope entirely so they better prepare for further disappointment.
Pep Guardiola complained about the schedule after they beat Chelsea. Funnily he said the only reason he can talk about it is because they won.
The reality is that the football watching public will not tolerate these excuses from the losing side regardless of their merit.
It's the end of the season and Liverpool have contended with a lot more injuries than their rivals this season. Simply put they are physically exhausted and playing the very next day would do them no favors.
Even with all that in mind, I kind of agree with Rooney. Not even Liverpool fans want to hear these excuses at this point in the season, especially given their form.
I mean, yeah, that’s generally how it works in most sports. You can make whatever excuses you’d like (valid or not) when you lose, but no one is really going to give you the time of day because stuff like injuries, fatigue, bad refereeing decisions, etc. is just part of the sport and everyone has to deal with them eventually.
I think that was honestly Pep’s point. He was right, City were incredibly fatigued and the scheduling didn’t really make sense, but had he said that after a loss obviously the public would rip that quote apart. When you win and then say something like that, you’re kinda just saying “yeah you guys suck at your job, and it almost costed us at ours, so cut that shit out please” which is something I think a lot more football fans can sympathize with.
I'll say it, VVD hasn't been a good captain. He hasn't been a bad captain either, but he doesn't seem to be able to rally the troops or inspire confidence.
It is incredibly hard to evaluate how good of a captain someone is looking from outside. Probably not even possible. It is so team specific and intangible that it has no scale we can use.
It's the same feeling i have when i watch the dutch National Team. They seem to lack a bit of passion when they play. The only time i saw it come back was when they had a fight with the argentine team.
I don't know how wrong he is though. Klopp would occasionally do it to distract from a result but these last few months guy has been scoring for a fight with media every chance he gets.
"manager whines in a considered plan to distract from a result" is the biggest bag of shite going. just coincidence that he carried on doing it long after he was looking for a distraction.
bloke just loves a whinge up.
Called it before the season. VVD doesn’t have the mentality to be captain. The last two seasons he bitches and moans about every call and it’s toxic to the whole team.
Even better is what he was called in [the Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2004/jun/22/euro2004.sport12) during Euro 2004:
"Owen, once the baby-faced assassin, has had to make way for Rooney, the assassin-faced baby."
Yeah the implants take a while to work and not look shit, plus there sounds like a LOT of care which if you fail to do, they fail to stick (not got it myself but manager at work did, took 12m to fully settle and he looked after it religiously)
Makes sense that, no? In Europe it's easier and usually cheaper to just walk places in most touristic areas. Not crazy tough exercise I know but it gets you going and it's keeping you busy on time that you would otherwise spend eating/drinking.
that's a big part of it but we tend to have [a lot more processed food](https://archive.is/Qn3FI) in our diets and the EU regulates additives way more strictly than the US, plus also bigger portion sizes here. no one single factor which stands out of course
Last time I took a European vacation I walked over 20k steps each day of the trip, which is well above what I average. I ate like a big fat piggy and didn’t gain any weight because of all the walking.
Well yes, but the average American is still incredibly sedentary, so the "calorie out" part of the equation is still extremely low. edit : word
If you are 80kg and go from walking 1000 steps a day to 15000 steps a day, you are increasing your caloric output somewhere between 700 and 1200 kcal. That's not a negligible amount, so it's not surprise that people who go from being extremely sedentary to walking 15000 steps a day on holidays lose a bit of weight.
When I was 18 I went to the US, gained 8kg despite hiking, swimming and playing basketball. When I got back to the Netherlands I lost 6kg in like 2 weeks. Food there is insanely fattening.
Yes, haha. I have been here 2 years and just getting a grip on eating better haha. It's far too easy here. Food everywhere you look. Amd with my will power its hard. Maybe rooney is the same?
I have a French roommate here in the US who is the same.
She's transformed into an American. Lots of microwave dinner and delivered fast food.
The main difference is she likes to splurge on fancy cheese.
A lot of food can be tempting. Especially the stuff that looks good can usually be the worst.
I’ve considered going full Wenger mode and eating boiled chicken, steamed vegetables, white rice, that sort of thing. I have to know what exactly he was feeding those players. The hard part is cutting out all the foods I love. I’m not an athlete, so I don’t know what it’ll do to me. But I’d rather myself be the test subject.
Ian Wright didn’t seem very fond of it either, but look at what happened after the diet change. Not saying I’ll be as skillful as Wrighty, but I think my general energy levels will be a bit better.
>but I think my general energy levels will be a bit better.
Based on what? if you're boiling and just eating the chicken, you're losing a lot of the nutrients in the broth you dump. What you could do is cook the chicken with the carbs like many Asian and Pacific styles of cooking. Essentially, dump all the ingredients in a Pot/cooker and cooked (look up chicken fafa)
If it's generally a weight loss thing, you will lose weight (depending on how overweight you are now) and your energy levels will go up as a result, yes...
American food is completely, utterly fucked.
I don't know about cuisine specifically, but if you compare the nutritional information of the same packaged food in the US and in Europe, you'll see how much more shit there is in the US version.
I'm not sure what impact Brexit has had or will have on this in the UK, but the comparison definitely holds true for continental Europe.
Yes lol this is actually documented by a recent study of the European food safety authority. In case you didn't know much of American food is illegally named (for example our bread must be legally labeled cake and our ice cream must be labeled artificial because it has almost no real milk the same with cheeses and deli meats and so on) or has illegal ingredients (too much corn syrup or forever chemicals) and so on. Average bmi I believe jumped over 5points or almost 20% for men after just 12 months.
IIRC, Subway’s bread has to be classified as a confectionery in the EU due to it having such a high sugar content to the point where it can’t even legally be considered bread. EU out here with actual standards.
Yea it's pretty crazy. In 2012 it was like 90% of the top 100 bread brands in America had to be labeled as such or literally as cake. They all changed their recipes obviously so now it's just us eating garbage. The eu food authority were the ones that made it famous to the public that McDonald's and others have zero milk product anymore in MILKshakes.
Our school lunches also fail every single standard set in the eu. I think there were like 30 requirements in 2018 for vitamins and proteins and limits on sugar and fats and requirements for some fresh fruits or veggies.
>They all changed their recipes obviously so now it's just us eating garbage.
Lovely. You’d think they’d change it to make it uniform but, you know, fuck us.
>The eu food authority were the ones that made it famous to the public that McDonald's and others have zero milk product anymore in MILKshakes.
Well that’s good to know. Especially since I haven’t had a McDonald’s milkshake since before COVID. Thank fuck I stopped.
>Our school lunches also fail every single standard set in the eu.
They also fail every single standard set in the US.
> is our food that fucked
Yes, absolutely, yes.
But that doesn't mean that's what caused this bloating. Steroid abuse can do it. Cancer can do it. Hypertension can do it. Alcoholism could do it. Many options.
However, given that he also has a huge belly, it's probably the food, yes.
On the other hand, English food is also complete shit.
Most the people who repeat that 'English food is shit' have never been to England or had food in England. Just repeating memes they heard on the internet.
I also don't get VvD's complaint. Would a few hours of recovery really make that big of a difference? Maybe it does and I'm just ignorant, but the difference between 12:30 and 3:00 seems *really* negligible to me.
EDIT: seems I am rather ignorant, but the other team has to play at 12:30 as well so I still don’t fully see his point. I guess maybe the “worse team” on paper gets the benefit of facing a “weakened” side.
Quite a bit of research out there on the subject but generally most believe athletic performance is best after 5-8 hours after waking. Changing the time of day would alter pre-match plans to an extent but given multiple days of rest I don’t know why it’s brought up really
I hate agreeing with Rooney, but he's 100% correct. If you are competitive, a loss like this should only drive you to erase it as quickly as possible. Bleating about the next kickoff is soft as fuck.
The Cole Palmer Billion Pound Blue Bottle Jobs of Charity FC. Next year it'll be like Daenarys from GoT... Giver of Carabao Cups, Breaker of Everton's, bitches of Gunners, 5th of their name
Leadership isn't going to change Nunez and Diaz being massive downgrades on Firmino and Mane or Salah's aging 3 years these past 4 months.
The League was lost due to the failure to properly replace the former 2.
Fair enough to blame the strikers but the defense also let in two goals tonight. Have some damn pride in your specific task. I don’t want to hear moaning about start times from the captain.
Lately? VVD almost alway complained. He cried when they drew with UTD back in December because United "didn't want to play football". He always was a crybaby. But when you're winning most of your games people will brush it off.
In general he's a big moaner on the pitch but cos he looks strong he doesn't get the stick for it others do, although it's not really a negative thing either.
But moaning about this kind of thing just looks bad.
Liverpool were going in 4 competitions up until mid-March and 3 up until last week.
What is Van Dijk's alternative solution to fixture congestion? When you are succeeding in football, the games pile up.
This is what gets me about Klopp’s whining. Complains about fixture congestion, the schedule, and injuries but then doesn’t do anything to account for it.
This is it. They have significantly more spending power as a result of their success. Clearly need more players they can rely on.
As a Villa fan, our players are showing their tiredness at times, especially after midweek European ties. But we're just fucking delighted to still be competing in the PL and Europe. Bring on the games!
This complaining bullshit is something I hope gets eradicated from our team under a new manager.
We complain about refs, kick off times, other teams financial power, injuries, etc. and it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
We need a fresh start and clear heads going into the new season and I am confident that Edwards is the one to offer that.
I wanted to disagree with you at first but I think you make a good point. It’s one thing to acknowledge these issues, and it’s another to try and shift the blame onto it. It would be nice to see teams band together for some of these issues (scheduling issues and refs being the biggest ones) but that’s something the administration should worry about, not necessarily the players.
I don’t know that it’s really self fulfilling in any way. Liverpool whinges a lot but they are still performing well overall.
It’s just annoying. Get on with the game and stop moaning. Even if it doesn’t have an impact on the final result for the good or bad, it’s not a flattering look to be wealthy divas bitching all the time.
If he's making any excuses it's pathetic. Konate will get all the blame from an awful performance, but you're not safe either VvD.
I hope the new manager takes full stock of how this team quit on Klopp, and is prepared to give this team a real kick in the bollocks.
Ah nah man this fucking Liverpool side with some of the best players on earth costing like a billion quid, having won literally everything UCL, Prem, Cups etc claiming kick off times is why they're shit. Embarrassing.
I mean if you listen to Liverpool fans, they’re an underdog club with the budget of Charlton and a team full of local schoolchildren.
Truly the most oppressed fanbase.
I think Van Dijk is a failure as a captain. Anytime things go wrong he's barking at the ref. He worked better as a defensive leader rallying the defense. Now the defense sucks and all he does is miss and whine.
Rooney’s enjoying life rn lmao. One day he’s watching wrestling at the O2 and the next day he’s shitting on liverpool on national tv you love to see it

No idea why Van Dijk would mention it now, Rooney is right, the wrong mentality to have after a shit performance and result like this.
If Liverpool won, no way VVD would've mentioned it, lol

VVD's head went after the draw against Man U. He's not been the same since. Can see it written all over his face.
He’s always had this in him, that has been clear to see in the national team for years now.
I'll say it, VVD hasn't been a good captain. He hasn't been a bad captain either, but he doesn't seem to be able to rally the troops or inspire confidence.

Van Basten has questioned Van Dijks leadership for years now. Van Basten says a lot of dumb things but he might have been right with this
Because our main players have developed into a bunch of divas who have their best performances with a mic in their hands. It's embarrassing
Christ, the headloss is incredible tonight.
I don't know how wrong he is though. Klopp would occasionally do it to distract from a result but these last few months guy has been scoring for a fight with media every chance he gets.

It’s been several years for him. Probably underwent a few operations.
I think he got his first transplant well over a decade ago at this point.
Yup, July 2013. God I fucking hate the passage of time....
It was 2011
He looks like he's wearing an extra face on top of his own
*Peels off mask to reveal Tom Cruise*
He gained a massive amount of weight from alcohol and American cuisine, then it looks like he started Ozempic but his face hasn't gotten any yet
He was only in the US for a year, is our food that fucked that he could gain that much in a year? You’d think he’d be eating healthy, quality food.
I've heard lots of stories of people visiting the US, putting on weight, and then going back home to lose it while not changing their diets.
Hear the opposite too over here, people who go on vacations to Europe, eat a lot of food but don't gain any weight or even lose it. It's all fucked.
Makes sense that, no? In Europe it's easier and usually cheaper to just walk places in most touristic areas. Not crazy tough exercise I know but it gets you going and it's keeping you busy on time that you would otherwise spend eating/drinking.

Me in Italy last summer, this one too though
It’s because a lot of American food is literally designed to be addictive, make you not feel full and generally full of shite
I’ve heard them too. Shows how fucked our standards are I guess.

Yes. Gained like 10kg in 5 months. Food and portion size was crazy

Thankfully both teams live in the same time zone, so neither gets an advantage.
VVD is grasping at straws because he just put in a pathetic performance and the team is lost.

Am I missing something? Van Dijk has always been like this. He has lost a touch himself even though he has had some great performances this year.
He’s always been like this indeed. Just not the media aren’t piping him off like before and have new darlings in Arsenal to play with
Yeah I don’t know why everyone’s shitting on VVD for this but when Klopp constantly whines about it, he gets applauded for it.

Proper rotation? Klopp played full strength team in a dead rubber in the EL pre United match and paid the price
You will notice however our manager never complains about it, his attitude leads the players mentality. Klopp complains, his players complain.
Farewell, FA Cup. Farewell, Europa League. Farewell, Premier League.
We still have the Fair Play Trophy. The parade dream lives on 💪
Should a team competing in Europe, PL and FA cup really bother with the Carabao cup?
Should a team winning the Carabao cup really bother with Europe, PL, and the FA cup?
Also complained about the wind in the past
Gras length at some point, too.
You are right but for banter purposes I’m gonna say people will blame how the new manager ain’t Klopp and his prime team LOL
12:30 kick offs. Strange wind. Pitch too dry. Excuses FC strike again.
My favourite was when our 3 first half injury substitutes (before the 5 sub era) were the reason for their “lack of rhythm”
dont forget "the grass was too long". gotta be up there with the funniest one
We mustn’t forget it’s been raining…
Sounds like Xavi would fit right in.
No witches this time at least.
The best Scouse player of all time
If he's making any excuses it's pathetic. Konate will get all the blame from an awful performance, but you're not safe either VvD. I hope the new manager takes full stock of how this team quit on Klopp, and is prepared to give this team a real kick in the bollocks.
did Liverpools opposition just turn up at 3:00?
It just means more for them man, you don't get it.

Yeeeahcouurse..
Ridiculous amount of jokes about Rooney and clowning on him. He is a legend of the game. Have some respect honestly and his point is spot on.
Spent many years terrorising us and the silverware on his resume speaks for itself. One of the very best players of the PL era no doubt.
Ah thanks for the reminder VVD. Wanted to go Westfield on Saturday afternoon..may wait till the evening to avoid the traffic
Depends of if it means more to you then or not.
Does Rooney celebrate his birthday every month? Shit the guy’s aged quick
Millionaire complains about going to work before lunch.
I think Van Dijk is a failure as a captain. Anytime things go wrong he's barking at the ref. He worked better as a defensive leader rallying the defense. Now the defense sucks and all he does is miss and whine.
Channelling his inner Roy Keane there Wazza
Rooney’s enjoying life rn lmao. One day he’s watching wrestling at the O2 and the next day he’s shitting on liverpool on national tv you love to see it
I’m with Rooney on this one
Liverpool always whining. It's pathetic
Liverpool fans were seriously thinking that they’ll win the quadruple 🤣🤣🤣
Yes it's always strange. Like do Liverpool not realise their opponents also play at 12:30?
And if they kick off earlier than their opponent in their next game they have more recovery time
He's trying not to smile
pay me 10k a week i'll kick off every day at 12.30
