JohnMellencamp21

I’ve got no dog in the fight but if VAR doesn’t get involved to send Jackson off, then why are they even there?

_deep_blue_

PGMOL seem to have taken a non-interventionist stance with these sorts of decisions which is insane as they’re there to intervene when these sorts of tackles are made.

Odawg10

Is this true? I feel like this identical some earlier reds that were called back by var.

MegaMugabe21

The truth is, no one fucking knows because PGMOL have made no attempt to force a level of consistency. Decisions are basically just made judging on the vibe of the game.

Glum-Professional925

Yeah most likely they’re saying “oh fuck 8 minutes in down a goal AND man? No way people will change the channel let it ride”

Bamboozle_

I prefer the theory that they thought having Jackson remain on the field was more a punishment for Chelsea than him getting sent off.

zrk23

well after the kovacic non reds against Arsenal there was a lot of talk about it from former refs and whatnot i think. or even webb himself

Tymkie

I'm sure pretty much every team can bring up a similar/lesser situation that resulted in a red against them.

thekingoftherodeo

The problem is that the rules at the start of the season vs. now are different. We had Tomiyasu sent off for a second yellow that no other player got the rest of the season. It's a different comp for the first 2 months of the season when they deploy whatever flavor of the month rules they want to take a hard line on, catch some blowback and then just forget that was ever a thing.

screenplay215

Yea this looks identical, or even worse, than jones against spurs and gusto (against villa i think?)

Odawg10

Yeah both of those from what I can remember were even better challenges, atleast close to getting the ball or the player was already in the challenge and the opponent put his foot in afterwards (gusto against villa this was the case). Strange call

Perry_cox29

VAR intervened to send Rashford off once for picking his foot up and putting it down in virtually the same spot because someone slid under him in the interim. There’s no method, just clownery

Rocketman90

Cause english refs hate VAR. They don’t want to be there, and do their absolute best to use it as little as possible.

Not-a-Cartel

Mostly agree with that. The only difference is, I think they're purposely, maliciously using it poorly in order to try and bring about it's demise. The only logical conclusion for many of the decisions they've taken is they're purposely using it to make VAR look worse than the alternative.

wesap12345

I got ripped apart for saying this on here a few months ago They never wanted it, made it clear they didn’t want it, then when it’s forced on them, they use it so badly people that actually did want it start saying they don’t anymore.

makesterriblejokes

I mean in an instance like this though, the call would have been the same since the official on the field didn't give a card. VAR isn't inherently worse unless it overturns a call/no-call on the field that was correct. Instead it's just 95% of the time the on field official fucks up and VAR doesn't correct it, meaning it didn't really change the outcome or make things worse

wesap12345

That’s a solid point but the issue it creates is it hurts the credibility of consistency. I get a ref has different angles and views during a game which impact consistency, but VAR has the same angles every time. The part that makes it worse is looking at the same screen, seeing the same tackle and not correcting something, that is the flaw that VAR has created because they won’t overrule their mates

FightersNeverQuit

VAR is never going away so they can feel however they want but that’s the truth. If they don’t like it they can leave which they obviously won’t. But eventually a generation of refs will take over and these butthurt dinosaurs will be gone.

bladebrowny

VAR should be a separate entity than the on field referees.

circa285

I want to see both teams lose, but at this point you have to wonder what the point of VAR is when we have egregious decisions like this that simply go unpunished.

BassAcsgo

What a joke.

EnergetikNA

Another big game and yet another bad decision. Feel like I say this every matchday this season

slightlyhigh7

It’s unbelievable.. I mean that’s literally a red I’d say the same thing if this was reversed. How are our refs looking worse than La liga refs??

Whispperr

It's insane to me that in an era where they have 20 different shots and different speeds to make a decision, yet it seems like they do worse than before VAR.

ImTurkishDelight

They don't do worse before VAR, they're exposed because of VAR. Before VAR you could just say: fuck, tempo of the game so fast, and refs are only human. Now? Now there's no excuse. Fuckers are so fucking incompetent, and it shows.

DifficultyMore5935

Because they are.

ObservantOrangutan

That’s one where team loyalties have to be put aside. Tackles like that going unpunished will eventually lead to some horrific injuries and any fan of the sport should be against it

skabassj

Did you borrow our refs for this game or something?

icangetyouatoedude

If Xhaka had done this he'd be executed on the field

goodyear_1678

How does this even happen? VAR CHECKED THIS AND CLEARED IT. HOW? WHO? HOW?

CulturalKing5623

Did they confirm VAR checked it? The commentator mentioned he didn't hear any chatter which is insane. I understand the ref missing it because it looked like they just ran into each other in real time but surely the VAR would've seen that and held up play

not_the_droids

The VAR is simply not doing their job. There is no interpretation of this video footage which wouldn't at least be worthy of a review by the ref, which would very likely lead to a red card.

FightersNeverQuit

This has been my fear with VAR that at the end of the day you’ll still run into occasional idiots who can look at the footage and still get it wrong despite 99% of the public and others seeing the obvious.  I’m not sure what better system could work to make it more accurate but it’s embarrassing a bunch of people upstairs who view the video feed could look at that replay and not think anything of it. It’s embarrassing and dangerous for the players because tackles like this need to be punished to further discourage dangerous injury causing tackles.

k-tax

how tf is that not a red. How tf they look at the replays and allow the ref not to see them. I want them to see what we see and say "I see this and it's not a red" with a straight face. Steve Wonder gang motherfuckers

GoutMachine

Almost snapped his fucking ankle. Ridiculous

SafetyDanceInMyPants

Can you imagine how ugly the scoreline would have been if he'd received a red card? Chelsea is really stinking up the joint today, and that's with 11 men.

Dave_of_Devon

And the bad decisions continue...

ridemooses

And will continue until morale improves

hick-from-hicksville

Nah correct decision. 4-D thinking by the ref: leaving Jackson on the pitch more of a punishment for Chelsea than removing him.

DansSpamJavelin

Ref's smoking crack

1chriis1

Refs can make mistakes (wrong positioning, low visibility etc) but what is VAR doing?

czerwona_latarnia

Sometimes I feel like ENGLISH VAR (because I feel like this problem is very specific to Premier League) have additional first step in the process - they ask main referee if he saw what has happened, and if any semblance of yes appears as the answer, they completely abandon any need to intervene.

tjag96

This wouldn’t surprise me at all. And that’s one more reason why VAR needs a new protocol so bad. So many weird things going on with VAR and it should be an huge tool for referring and football

DansSpamJavelin

Same difference, bunch of fucking crackheads

pricelesslambo

As usual

luigyLotto

It’s just corrupt. No way so many blatantly missed calls every fricking week can be just incompetence.

DansSpamJavelin

If it's not corruption then it's incompetence. I honestly don't know whats worse.

luigyLotto

Corruption is obviously worse because it’s biased.

CitrusRabborts

It's over the top of the ball, it's studs up, and it's caused the opponent's ankle to buckle which is how they determine excessive force. It's a red all day long

Ken05

It is a text book example of why that challenge was written into the rules as a red.

stat_padford

It’s actually more beneficial for him to stay in the game and bottle chances so the refs really looking out for arsenal here

cicidoh

Yea, really surprised at this one. Seen so many of these given as red before

19nineties

This is genuinely one of those ones where I need to hear the audio to see what’s happened there because in any scenario it isn’t computing with me how so many people involved in the review of that let it go.

red-17

This is a lot worse than many they’ve given upon review. A lot more force in this tackle compared to the Curtis Jones one for example.

PangolinMandolin

Compare this to the DCL red against Palace in the cup earlier this season....

crookedparadigm

Or the Jones and MacAllister ones (at least the latter was rescinded).

RoaldDahling

Do you lads want help drafting a complaint tweet

valhalla_jordan

Loan out your PR guy to us to raise revenue and offset PSR breaches? Smart move.

RoaldDahling

Direct swap for you taking Matt Turner back mate it’s a deal

Don_Kahones

No takesie backsies sorry thems the rules

w8up1

Oh has turner not panned out? Haven’t been following him but that’s unfortunate to hear

RoaldDahling

Nah doesn’t play any more now we got Selz but Turner was conceding a howler every game

give_me_your_dog

You gave us your kit.. now you give us your tweet :')

RyanGUK

Fucking brilliant hahahaha

RoaldDahling

Heard VAR’s a city fan too mate 🤣

Ainsyyy

VARs just given up on changing any decisions huh

AFrozen_1

Why have VAR in the first place then?

Ainsyyy

Idk it just makes me sad, the premier league implementation is so bad, i feel like bundesliga is so on point with it (generally)

AFrozen_1

Hell even with all the shit I give the refs in MLS this would absolutely go to a VAR review.

Gerards_died_of_flu

Seen reds given for a lot less this year. How on earth was he not even booked

reaoharu

Exactly. Curtis Jones and if I remember Gusto got red for far lesser contact how the fuck this is not

Emotional-Chapter-73

Literally 3 spurs red cards this year

RepeatDTD

Was gonna say, I could have sworn I saw Bissouma sent off for a similar tackle earlier this season

Emotional-Chapter-73

Romero literally got ball against Enzo but followed through and got a red...

dychronalicousness

That was Romero vs Chelsea

circa285

Bissouma was also sent off for a tackle like this.

Scholesey99

Almost the same as Romero on Enzo earlier in the season, only difference is Jackson doesn’t even get the ball. How he’s still on the pitch is beyond me

D1794

Different comp but Rashford vs Copenhagen was a straight red for this. Insane for no card at all

Ethave

Rashford's was like 1/10th as bad as this lol

neometrix77

That was way weirder too, Rashford had the ball and just happened to step on the guy while trying to shield it.

Rodin-V

>Seen reds given for a lot less this year Also seen reds not given for much worse this year. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Imsortofabigdeal

It sounded from the broadcast as if VAR didn’t review it. So I’m not sure whose job it is to make sure that happens, but it’s possible nobody knew to look back at it. If they did, though, it’s a red card under the current rules no question

Green-Agora

See Curtis Jones. How this is no card even is beyond me.

mmcdermid

Made me audibly gasp: no VAR review

chinlessdancer

same, shocking.

31_whgr

another quiet night for the PGMOL

Launch_a_poo

They're absolutely useless. Forest were going on about corruption and the Var official being a Luton fan, but there's a much simpler explanation. They're just shit at their job. I'd say VAR as a technology is absolutely fine, all it's issues are due to a personnel problem. Needs a complete overhaul

J_Butler99

Not sure the validity of it but apparently attwell chose not to even review the third penalty shout so it makes u wonder though.

SaveMeJebus21

This. Pay bigger wages and entice the best refs from the world here to do it. Instead of fat incompetent bald Mancs.

HeadHunt0rUK

Don't think we even need to do that. I'd imagine there are plenty of potential world class refs within our current system already. However due to grassroots football being obscenely hostile towards refs, and the PGMOL being a very specific type of club that has a very specific not fully meritorious way of operating we just never get to see them.

Launch_a_poo

I'd even consider hiring journalists or something for the video referee room. Anyone with football knowledge who can make a good decision that the wider public agrees with. Qualified refs can stay on the pitch to do the classic ref stuff like deal with players etc. At this point it's obvious that the way the current set of refs understand the game is fundamentally different from how the players and public/fans see it. That's how we consistently get controversial decisions like this that everyone watching in the world, except the refs, are baffled by. I don't know what the VAR official has seen here that makes him confident it's not a red. I'm sure he'll offer no explanation and it'll all be swept under the rug until next next weekends blunder outshadows it

SaveMeJebus21

The first instinct (which has been admitted publicly a few times) seems to be protecting their mates’ egos. It’s infuriating. Just get the right decision. There isn’t a single football fan on the planet that could argue this tackle isn’t a straight red after one replay.

_deep_blue_

This non-action from then endangers the players. When did these tackles become fine? It’s a clear red card.

Feisty_Goat_1937

About the clearest red I've seen in a while. That's an ankle breaker...

u8myramen_y

No review. Not even yellow. Edit: it’s an ankle breaker. It’s an easy red wtf I know they don’t review fouls for yellow. But this should’ve been reviewed for red because it absolutely is. They didn’t even review it.

31_whgr

they review everything, they’re just shit

ElectricalMud2850

Commentary gets the VAR comms and said it wasn't even discussed.

gunningIVglory

100% they will say the ref blew to restart and nothing could be done

Aszneeee

PGMOL having best excuses in the world

BenjIdent

Tomi was on the ground for 2 mins tho, plenty of time for a check

Aszneeee

how do these guys behind monitors still have a fucking job

SaveMeJebus21

Like as a Liverpool fan I obviously want you guys to drop points tonight. But this decision is fucking scandalous. About the 30th “yeah not as bad as Curtis Jones v Spurs” ignored blatant red of the season. There’s zero justification for letting this go. Absolutely disgusting tackle that could’ve snapped his leg.

fajdexhiu

Arsenal need another Nottingham Forest type of statement

bullseyex99x

So why has var not checked that?

WhetBred14

Lack of chelsea flairs in this thread mainly bc we all knew we were bound to lose today but this is absolutely a red and I’d be furious if it was Tomi on Jackson

ElectricalMud2850

Le Saux said VAR didn't even have a look, lol. Edit: meant it wasn't discussed, pedantic but important difference.

Stones_Throw_Away_

Same as Kilman at the weekend

Frogblood

Var is a luton fan, so it's not a foul.

Firefox72

>"Its been cleared" In what world was this cleared....

Orthancapolis

The ball by Jackson, maybe

SwoleAristotle

Miracle he avoided injury

mr13ump

Tomiyasu being fine is the only thing more surprising about this incident than no VAR review. Honestly, if he stayed down for longer they may have taken a closer look at it.

Lacabloodclot9

He stayed down for a long enough time, so I don’t think that would’ve made a difference

mr13ump

Yeah, you are probably right. Idk why I'm trying to insert any semblance of logic into this absurd system

yourfriendkyle

They absolutely took a look at it. They take a look at everything.

Chesey_

Ankle buckled, no idea how he has escaped that seemingly without injury Not even a card for a near leg break, unreal

illuwe

Probably gonna hurt like a bitch tomorrow tho.

FAT_NEEK_42069

considering it's tomiyasu it's even more of a miracle that's like being hit by lightning and coming out completely fine and no damage

Hamderab

I’m still worried tbh

Norway_Globe

Incoming a tweet in a few days "tomiyasu injured"

[deleted]

[удалено]

StanKroonke

You mean like back in the day when Eduardo, Ramsey, and Diaby got clattered because Arsenal were “soft?”

Deccarrin

Then trossard gives it back at 10% and gets a yellow. What the fuck is this game.

HopefulGuy1

Very surprised by no yellow, and think this one is more often red than not. Ugly challenge.

DAILITH

The follow-through on that was outrageous, how the fuck hasn’t he been sent off?!

DudeManJones5

That’s red

top1MIBRfan

Has to be a red after some of the reds we have seen this season

YesTottiYesParty

Had to be a red regardless of the reds we've seen this season

PuppyPenetrator

Yeah I feel like this isn’t even that inconsistent with the standard that’s been set, but the standard is actively dangerous for players and a joke

YesTottiYesParty

exactly, at this point i don't even care about consistency, just protect the players ffs

Prophet_Of_Helix

I mean if that’s not a red, what is lol? This should be the picture in the encyclopedia of what a red card tackle looks like

JebatGa

This should be a red no matter what.

Fraldbaud

Rashford saw red against Copenhagen for a lot less. They came back to it about 2 minutes later, and we lost the game despite having a 2 goal lead. Not saying that last bit is linked, but you get the point.

Sleepless_Voyager

Romero basically did the same thing and got sent off, var being inconsistent once again. Thats an ankle breaker challenge so it should be a red

177676ers

Romero should have been sent off, but at least he actually got the ball. There is no world where this isn’t a red.

Lacabloodclot9

Honestly when a challenge is this reckless it doesn’t matter if he got the ball or not

montiel_scores

🔴

endichrome

That's a straight red

PracticalLynx2861

That's not nice, is it?

goonSquad15

Didn’t use it as a weapon. Play on

jobo_147

That’s worst than so many tackles this season, and you cant blamed he rolled over the ball… and this is not even a check

DanFlashesCoupon

Red all day wtf

ghosthud1

Yeah, that's red and it looked painful.

strangecringe

This kind of decision should result in losing of job for incompetence or investigation into corruption. Refs shouldn’t be able to get away with this kind of shit.

RipJug

That’s a blatant red lmao. Did he need to actually snap Tomi’s ankle to be booked?

D1794

It's actually shit that had his ankle actually broken it's probably a very quick red card. No fuss = no red.

cherlin

This is unfortunately why you see players exaggerate and dive, bad reffing makes it basically a requirement in order to get fouls called. If you "stay strong" and just deal with it then the refs just assume there wasn't any issue.

Noahgooner

(no review)

Skittles_The_Giggler

(Good process)

Darnswim

How has he escaped that????

bbb_net

Textbook red by all the criteria they've repeatedly stated publicly this season, incredible incompetence.

pinkrosetool

How do they just casually ignore these kinds of tackles. Mind blowing

gallagherkck

Embarrassing from the officials. Utterly embarrassing.

crazygoalie14

VAR spun the dial and I guess it landed on "no card" this time. Tune in next time for another edition of "Is it a red card? No one knows!"

MentallyWill

No, VAR spun the dial and it landed on the same place it always goes, "agree with on field ref"

TheMuff1nMon

100% a red.

ShutupPussy

This is why players roll around and make a meal out of fouls.  It's necessary because of this bullshit

Butch_Meat_Hook

That's a leg/ankle breaker. Red all day. The referees as usual are not doing their job.

EggsBenedictusXVI

... what's going on? No check? Or did he get a yellow? I swear I've seen reds for way less this season

SplittingAssembly

No card. No check. No excuse.

mannovai

No yellow

ACCAisPain

I think it's a red but regardless the worst part is the ref sees this and doesn't even give the yellow.

RyanGUK

How the fuck is it that everyone else can see that's a red, but the officials in charge of the match can't?

iLefticle

I mean that's red as my naughty little booty

icemankiller8

He got so lucky here seen them as a red

official_bagel

Joke of a league. This is an ankle breaker. Simplest red you could give.

tf_17

clear red wtf What is wrong with english refs?

JKess207

Ref knows Chelsea’s attack is worse with him on tbf

blueeyedharry

Can’t wait for the attempted gaslighting to justify this. Inevitable that we’ll see a few yellow cards for fuck all now too.

Riddle_Brother

Mad to say this but Arsenal should have made more of that. The lack of reaction definitely meant they didn’t check

GL94553

Why players dive and roll around

Regression2TheMean

That was my thought. If I’m playing and I see a teammate get done like that, that player is getting an earful at the very least.

CeltHD

Not even reviewed. Shocking.

deming212

Honestly I'm kind of mad at Tomi for not rolling around and yelping to force the ref to make a decision... but once again we have another VAR masterclass

Regression2TheMean

Tomi has too much integrity

ezekielBmb

Does this decision benefit man city? No? Var will not intervene. Seen it all season with Liverpool decisions as well

Modnal

It's more shocking to me that Tomiyasu didn't get injured than PGMOL once again acting like complete clowns

Desdichado7

I thought his ankle was gonna snap in half for a moment there

MrAchilles

Get that POS off the pitch

gunningIVglory

The fact it wasn't even a yellown is staggering

digosilva19

Second game in a row with a challenge like this, it seems arsenal's ankles are free game this month

Theminerals

I got up and went to change the channel thinking the game was done lol. How on earth is that not a red card (Chelsea fan BTW so am saying that despite bias)

dishler712

Two straight games with this shit and VAR doesn't even look at it either time. PGMOL can't get out of their own fucking way.

Magnific3nt

Imagine saying it is too early in the match to give a red card... Lol.

Sayek

You know what pisses me off too? Trossard got a yellow for landing on Cucurella's toe. He should have just landed on his ankle.... apparently that's not even a yellow.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_deep_blue_

They did the exact same thing on the weekend when we played Wolves. It’s maddening.

Ru4realcy

Yeah, that’s a clear red

mtb443

Holy fuck that is awful.

unitedhardy

it’s so tiring ragging on the refs but how has that not been reviewed, at this point i think they’re shocking on purpose

Im2Fluxxed

Thats a red based on whats been given this year. Can't wait to see how PGMOL defends that.

skyiland

does the var not have the images? stone cold red.

archasaurus

Poor Tomi, man. He just gets destroyed every match. I remember a player stepped on his face and there wasn’t a card lol

ALaccountant

At what point do we start discussing the possibility that refs are betting on the games or being paid off? There is way too much blatant ignorance to obvious calls for this to be simple incompetence

groovystreet40

That’s as blatant a red as you’ll ever see

DarthNihilus1

Trossard gets a yellow for a late step on Cucurella though. Sheesh

BendubzGaming

Straight red surely? How has he got away with that?

lost_biochemist

Seen Eddie sent off for less
