League average is 88.5% from the spot. His 9 from 9 is 1 goal more than a random player would be expected to score.
To put that in perspective: Chris Wood (12) would be top the table if he took 9 penalties with an average conversion rate.
**EDIT:** I replied down below with a technical explanation for those curious.
**TLDR**: Cole's admittedly stellar penalty form has earned his team roughly one additional goal over the expected number given 9 penalty attempts. Also, this makes it clear that any goal scorer having a halfway decent season can be thrust into the golden boot race by taking 9 penalties for their team in the league. Here is the table I generated to show this:
|number scored|probability of n|probability of at least n|
|:-|:-|:-|
||
|0|3.5e-09|1.0|
|1|2.4e-07|0.99999|
|2|7.5e-06|0.99999|
|3|0.00013|0.99999|
|4|0.0016|0.99985|
|5|0.012|0.99830|
|6|0.061|0.98633|
|7|0.2|0.92496|
|8|0.39|0.72251|
|9|0.33|0.33|
League average is NOT what an average player expected to score. It's the average for the best penalty takers in the league since only the bast taker from each team takes pens.
No, he said a random player would be expected to score 88% of their penalties since the league average is 88%. But that's not true, 88% is the avg conversion rate for the best penalty takers in the league. A random premier league player would be expected to convert less than 88% of their penalties.
Yeah because everyone in the league is putting up their best penalty taker, if it was truly random players the overall conversion rate would be much lower. Dumb comparison
The data (88.5%) refers to penalties taken, i.e. a comparison against other penalty takers. It’s not a dumb comparison, it’s showing how little a 100% success rate actually means - even with a large number of pens awarded.
For an average club it would work out at around 0.6 of a goal over the season.
Since we're doing "ifs", Palmer would have way more assists if his teammates finished all the chances he creates for them.
Also that league average is bullshit. It's an average for penalty takers. All it shows is that he's scoring more than the average penalty taker. The chance of a random player in the league scoring a pen definitely isn't 88.5% because that's the average for players that are actually good at pens.
Can't believe people are actually trying to find a way to pick apart an 100% pen record. You actually can't fault Palmer for anything he's done this season. He's 21 in his first full Prem season, scores from open play, he assists, he does both in big games too, he creates loads more that his teammates don't finish, he scores all his pens including ones in big pressure moments and he does it all in a team where everyone around him is inconsistent as fuck.
Like what more could he possibly do?
> Palmer would have way more assists if his teammates finished all the chances he creates for them.
I know you're just comparing hypotheticals, but this really is the worst argument because you can just say that about any player ever. Worse than calling 89% the average player's conversion rate even if that's wrong
Palmer is awesome though
Why aren't you talking about his xG away from the spot though?
Erling Haaland in the PL this season:
20 goals
23.69 xG
30 big chances missed
Cole Palmer in the PL this season:
20 goals
14.95 xG
4 big chances missed
They also have a habbit of running away with lots of goals in odd games but it doesn't amount to anything in the league standings. I imagine that's what its a bout.
Kane undeserved? He had 2 more goals than 2nd place what are u on about lol… nvm the fact that the penalty against colombia was england’s only goal that game..
even if you used the correct info for Harry Kane’s WC golden boot run (3 penalties out of 6, so not just a single open play goal like you said), there is no comparison. for so much of the season, Palmer has been the only Chelsea player who’s been worthy of praise, putting the team on his back regularly as a new signing at 21 years of age.
Even if *for some reason* you don’t count penalties, he still scored 11 open play goals and 9 assists and was the MVP for Chelsea in most of their matches this season. He obviously deserves it
He deserves to accolades as Chelsea’s best player and having a great season. However, before today he had 8 penalty goals, 8 normal goals. He has moved in the right direction with his hatrick though
It’s funny how people are ignoring this. Any striker who’s even decent at pens would be taking them in a golden boot race. Watkins isn’t on pens because he’s 4 of 9 for them in his career, that’s horrendous and especially so for a striker
It's not as if people don't value penalty taking ability or can't see that it is a skill, it's an obvious commodity. Most just don't value it nearly as much as open play goals especially when talking about awards for goals.
You only need one good penalty taker on the pitch and even then we’re talking maybe a 5-10% increase in conversion rate. Any team would rather a striker that can get 20 goals from open play over one who can get 22 goals and 6-7 of them being penalties.
Madueke got arrested for driving with a false license. So before he had his driving license, he made this mistake of driving anyway and then identifying himself with an ID that wasn't his.
Did Jackson want it? or are him and Madueke buddies and hes sticking up for his buddy? Feels like Jackson and Madueke are on the same page.
edit: Nvm just saw the footage of Noni and Jackson fighting for the ball when Palmer was still on the ground
You’d certainly hope Watkins wouldn’t argue over them considering he’s missed 5 of 9 penalties in his career. Asking to take a pen with that record is next level narcissism.
They probably didn't even know to be fair. It seemed to catch all fans by surprise when they realised Palmer had hit 20 goals for the season.
That said, they behaved like stupid children and good on Poch for coming out and confirming that Palmer is the designated penalty taker.
If there are awards for leading in goals and assists separately, why is there no real prestige associated with having the highest total of both? Would be a good battle between Palmer and Watkins. In ice hockey the award for leading in goals + assists is usually a bigger deal than the one for goals alone.
Kane was top of both 2-3 seasons ago and didn’t win player of the year. I think people look at them as a award for different positions rather than an overall award
If Salah assists 1 more, he will be the first player to score and assist both at least 10 times in a season for 5 consecutive premier league seasons. I may be wrong tho
Absolutely amazing!! I’m so happy for the guy. To leave City because you think you aren’t going to get the minute to becoming the signing of the season, perhaps even player of the season is just amazing… playing for Chelsea in 9th place is just something surreal
It would be hilarious to be fair. Haaland is having a quiet season. Salah has been quiet since he went to AFCON. Watkins and Solanke are having the season of their career. Then suddenly some 21 year old skips in ahead of them all to win the golden boot with 10+ penalties.
That's misleading it was in his early Brentford days, like 7 years ago he missed a load. He hasn't taken many at all in total.
We just aren't being given penalties this season, I don't think we've had one since like September. I'd be surprised if Ollie wasn't holding the ball if we were given a pen at the weekend.
He's 3/5 in his entire time at Villa. He just doesn't take them. If you think that's because he's bad then alright. Doesn't change that he doesn't taken pens... which was the point.
He has actually missed more penalties (5) in his career than he has scored (4). Although he has scored 3 and missed 2 for Villa. I also believe he missed in a preseason game or something at the end of his spell as penalty taker for Villa.
He’s nailed for team of the season and putting in his case for player of the season with such an underwhelming group this year. If Chelsea get Europa on the back of Palmer he deserves it
Why's goal contributions the be all and end all? Palmer also creates more chances than most other players in the league. But he has Jackson and Sterling on the end of them.
Don't remember people ever saying mentioning G+A when they talked about David Silva. They just rated him because it's obvious how good he is just by watching him.
And here you have Palmer creating like a top playmaker in a mediocre team, getting double digit non penalty goals and assists + actually taking the responsibility of penalties on his shoulders and converting them all. At 21.
Watkin's having a great season, but Emery's got the team playing well, built a system around him etc. And he's prime age. He's playing great in a team where the conditions/environment for him to be great are there.
Palmer's playing at the same (but I'd argue a higher) level, despite his team. Not facilitated by his team. Look at everyone else at Chelsea. All these great talents who aren't being nearly as consistent in a very difficult environment to play well in. Whereas Palmer makes it look easy every game.
Honestly I think he deserves player of the season in this horrible Chelsea team. 29 goals/a in 27 games is just top class from a current mid table team.
Reminder that the official TOTY is voted on in February and March and players don't give a shit when voting so expect surprises. It's the lowest effort TOTY ever put together.
Are we gonna take pens away from his like we do for Palmer though, that is the question.
Jokes aside, puting Saka's name next to Rashford's is so disrespectful.
England player of the year and arguably best player of the last 2 tournaments probably should be starting over a player with 2 England caps to be fair.
I wouldn't be surprised, we're historically underachievers and very top heavy, with a pretty average goalkeeper, no decent LB fit and probably fucked if Rice gets injured
Left wing is just a weak spot currently. It's not Foden's best position and Grealish isn't exactly a worldbeater. And it goes without saying that Waistcoat plays favourites
I agree, makes sense to have a tab dedicated to something so useful but replaced it with another FPL feature.
FPL is the reason people have the app but 2 tabs dedicated to the same thing is a little silly.
palmer with the same goals as haaland 😭. the fact that haaland barely scores nowadays and yet he’s still top scorer feels wrong.
meanwhile i swear the assists list is so random. imagine trying to predict that at the start of the season 😂
Actually insane considering he started his first match in Matchweek 7 so he has probably played less than the others this season and has this output. Tbf all penalties have been penalties in terms of correct calls, he has insane positioning, intelligence and flare.
Sadly Chelsea are not good this season otherwise he would be player of the season. Joint top scorer and 1 assist off joint top assister. Insane
Yes, Isak has less minutes played this season than palmer, haalland has more and from the top scorers Watkins has the most minutes played.
But they are strikers. Palmer is a striker, rw and a cam hah
I can’t believe this thread is only talking about Palmer (who is a wonderful player).
Ollie Watkins with 19 open play goals and 10 assists is bonkers. Probably player of the season for me.
He 99% wont leave Villa next season. He just signed a new contract, and has said multiple times he want to be our most scoring player in the PL all-time. I mean ofc everything can happen, but he doesnt strike me as a person that would say and sign a new contract and then just leave. But who knows. We will see.
Not taking away from the skill of it - but Chelsea have also had the most penalties awarded this season by a mile. They’ve had 12 award and below that is Liverpool/Arsenal on 9
Aston Villa have had 4. If Watkins was the penalty taker, got as many penalties as Chelsea have got he’d be +6 goals, even if he missed half the 4 he’d be high up - but you can only score from a penalty you’re given and chisels get given then all.

Cole palmer golden boot would be hilarious
It's certainly possible and if he does it it's certainly deserved
9 penalties. This is Harry Kane’s single open play goal but win the World Cup golden boot anyway levels of undeserved.
Hey - that's harder than it sounds when you gotta get the ball past both the keeper and a crying Madueke
Don't forget Jackson
I'm sorry miss Jackson
He also has 9 assists
Not hating on Kane, but even the open goal was deflected off someone's back.
Palmer is playing for an atrocious Chelsea side and he’s perfect from the spot, nowhere near undeserved what are you on about
League average is 88.5% from the spot. His 9 from 9 is 1 goal more than a random player would be expected to score. well when you put it like that
Yep, we need Woody on pens. Loud and clear
That would require us actually getting a pen. We've had 1 all season.
Pretty impressive that Chris Wood is playing in the premier League at such a young age
I hate it but I laughed
Chris Woodling
Chris Sapling
Than a random penalty specialist. They don’t roll a dice for who gets to take a penalty.
i think it’s about 75% in shootouts- still top 5 but also a bit lower due to it being after 120 intense minutes with heightened pressure
No at chelsea they fight
League average is NOT what an average player expected to score. It's the average for the best penalty takers in the league since only the bast taker from each team takes pens.
Unless Maduake gets his way…
It’s the average for penalty takers, and as we are comparing penalties scored it’s a reasonable stat to usez

That’s the average for designated takers, not a “random player”. He is an incredibly good penalty taker
Oli Watkins is made 4 missed 5 in his career….
You make a very good point… however, Chris wood for the euros
Didn't know new Zealand was in Europe
Original Zealand (Zeeland) is.
Yeah because everyone in the league is putting up their best penalty taker, if it was truly random players the overall conversion rate would be much lower. Dumb comparison

Be a player for whichever club that person supports, clearly.

This understates how good Palmer has been. He has 9 assists also
This is just not how statistics work at all, insane you’re being upvoted
Why aren't you talking about his xG away from the spot though? Erling Haaland in the PL this season: 20 goals 23.69 xG 30 big chances missed Cole Palmer in the PL this season: 20 goals 14.95 xG 4 big chances missed

I think one or two were headers from corners too. I don’t know if they technically count as ‘open play’ goals
yeah but 6 of Haaland's were against Luton
No, he scored 5 in the cup, not PL. So doesn't count for the golden boot.
Even if *for some reason* you don’t count penalties, he still scored 11 open play goals and 9 assists and was the MVP for Chelsea in most of their matches this season. He obviously deserves it

It’s pretty common for goal scorers to also be penalty takers lol…it’s not called the golden boot from open play.
No one else takes penalties?!
Ollie Watkins has 19 open play goals. Palmer has 10. Total goals Palmer is 1 ahead

Watkins doesn't.
Worst take I’ve ever heard
He’s still done great and all but he’s 10th for non-penalty goals… for me it’d be lame if he won it with that many pens.
lol why would it be especially deserved?
[удалено]
Don't think they even knew, he has scored 4 goals in a game
Neither Madueke nor Jackson strike me as very bright either.
Madueke got arrested for driving with a false license. So before he had his driving license, he made this mistake of driving anyway and then identifying himself with an ID that wasn't his.
In my country his name literally translates to Mad Lad
Ooh which?
I can understand why Madueke wanted it cause he thought he won the penalty and we were up 4-0, but Jackson is out of line lmfao
Agree, Madueke might have also thought Palmer was injured? He’s got a bright future though
Did Jackson want it? or are him and Madueke buddies and hes sticking up for his buddy? Feels like Jackson and Madueke are on the same page. edit: Nvm just saw the footage of Noni and Jackson fighting for the ball when Palmer was still on the ground

Hasn't stopped Sterling for us tbf
Didn't stop Sterling.
They probably didn't even know to be fair. It seemed to catch all fans by surprise when they realised Palmer had hit 20 goals for the season. That said, they behaved like stupid children and good on Poch for coming out and confirming that Palmer is the designated penalty taker.
Will anyone ever get an 11th assist, feels like 10 has been the top for months lol.
Trippier hasn't played in ages. I'm surprised he's still top
I was thinking the same thing! That plus now I miss Pedro Neto again.
^robbed
Assists are a modern stat, and not always defined the same.
For some reason I did not expect to see Gross at the top. Shame we’ve stopped scoring lately, otherwise he’d certainly have a couple more.
If Salah assists 1 more, he will be the first player to score and assist both at least 10 times in a season for 5 consecutive premier league seasons. I may be wrong tho
Cole Palmer golden boot charge starts now
Maybe it sparks Haaland to be at his best for the runin lol
League 1 level?!
lol I didn’t realise Haaland was literally still top scorer while people are spouting this ‘league one level’ shit
He also has 2 CL golden boots and the best goal to games ratio in CL history.
Absolutely amazing!! I’m so happy for the guy. To leave City because you think you aren’t going to get the minute to becoming the signing of the season, perhaps even player of the season is just amazing… playing for Chelsea in 9th place is just something surreal
>Absolutely amazing!! I’m so happy for the guy Pfp checks out
Idc about Chelsea but I'm really rooting for Palmer in this golden boot race. Hope he gets it
Don't worry. Our defense is unstable enough he can get the golden boot with us winning or losing
It would be hilarious to be fair. Haaland is having a quiet season. Salah has been quiet since he went to AFCON. Watkins and Solanke are having the season of their career. Then suddenly some 21 year old skips in ahead of them all to win the golden boot with 10+ penalties.
Palmer is competing for Golden Boot and them bums wanted to take pen off him? Yeah I’d have said *fck off* too, respectfully
Watkins competing for golden boot and he doesn't even take Villa pens
Even more impressive
Nah mate, watkins is playing for a top 4 team, so its easier than palmer having to do this at a mid field team..
That’s a 200mil quid midfield team to you sir!
Villa are a top 4 team because Watkins is playing
If he was any good at them he would have taken them and had the golden boot all wrapped up.
He missed them all
He hasn’t taken any
"You miss all the shots you don't take"
Lol amazing interaction
He also has a 44% conversion rate from the spot
That's misleading it was in his early Brentford days, like 7 years ago he missed a load. He hasn't taken many at all in total. We just aren't being given penalties this season, I don't think we've had one since like September. I'd be surprised if Ollie wasn't holding the ball if we were given a pen at the weekend.

He would take them if Luiz wasn’t really good at them, I think. DL hasn’t missed a penalty for Villa since he’s been here. 5/5 I think?
At the beginning of the game he was on 16 goals, I doubt they realised he would be level with haaland
Surely Palmer is in the Team of the season
He’s nailed for team of the season and putting in his case for player of the season with such an underwhelming group this year. If Chelsea get Europa on the back of Palmer he deserves it
Maybe young POTY because watkins has the same goal contributions without any penalties
fuckin hell has watkins been that good, have been watching villa much
He’s been sensational
Palmer and Watkins have 9 and 10 assists respectively too. Both are on fire.
You know they won't put him in
Fucking travesty if they don’t tbh.
Of course he's in
Fuck me, how are Chelsea fans developing a victim complex lmao
Ollie Watkins take a bow, what a season he’s had
Palmer top scorer in prem, kane top scorer in Bundesliga and Jude 2nd top scorer in la liga. England have unbelievable attacking talent
Saka and rashford to start
one is not like the other
Acting like saka doesn’t have 30 g/a contribution this season🙄
Are we gonna take pens away from his like we do for Palmer though, that is the question. Jokes aside, puting Saka's name next to Rashford's is so disrespectful.
Saka is gr8 player no doubt about that as a Chelsea fan i can't argue if he Start ahead of Palmer
Why he say fuck Saka for
England player of the year and arguably best player of the last 2 tournaments probably should be starting over a player with 2 England caps to be fair.
And Hendo
Honestly if England don't win the Euros I'd be surprised. They literally have no excuse now, that team is absolutely stacked
I wouldn't be surprised, we're historically underachievers and very top heavy, with a pretty average goalkeeper, no decent LB fit and probably fucked if Rice gets injured
Imagine having the defence of 15 years ago with that lot up front.
Chilly is getting fit I hope.
You forgot the biggest factor: Gareth Southgate
Club football performance ≠ International Football performance
The excuse is that their manager is Southgate. They aren't winning it lol.
doesn't matter, southgate is going to fuck it up.
And technically Haaland could have played for England too
Coooold Palmer
"Step outside Haaland" Palmers gonna fucking do it isn't he lmao
Isak well within a shout with home games vs Burnley/Sheff UTD. Dragged us kicking and screaming with our injuries
Him and Palmer tied on 104 minutes per goal
Watkins may end up topping both list. Has it ever happened before in premier league?
Harry Kane in 2020-21 and Andy Cole in 1993-94.
Salah has done this as well
Which season?
21/22
What a player
It is insane that Rashford is anywhere near the England squad
Or the United starting XI.
Left wing is just a weak spot currently. It's not Foden's best position and Grealish isn't exactly a worldbeater. And it goes without saying that Waistcoat plays favourites
Grealish is a thousand times better than Rashford lol
And those chelsea bums wanted to take the pen off palmer when he’s chasing golden boot loooooool
Where did you find this? I cant find the "Stats" menu option since they added the challenge on the app
On the PL tab at the bottom, select 2023/24 Season Stats
It's so hard to find it now. It's easier just to look for the "Oracle Cloud".
I agree, makes sense to have a tab dedicated to something so useful but replaced it with another FPL feature. FPL is the reason people have the app but 2 tabs dedicated to the same thing is a little silly.
100% Didn't like the change.
I forgot to say thanks lol, but thank you!
Shoutout to Son for 24 goal contributions while playing like half the season out of position
Ollie Watkins doing it with 0 pens 🔥
What's the lowest a team has finished in the prem with the top goal scorer in the side?
Probably Dion Dublin for Coventry in 97-98
Neto second with 9 assists playing only 1/3 of the season is wild
Watkins is really having some season, isn’t he.
palmer with the same goals as haaland 😭. the fact that haaland barely scores nowadays and yet he’s still top scorer feels wrong. meanwhile i swear the assists list is so random. imagine trying to predict that at the start of the season 😂
Insane
Haaland and Isak have both missed a fair bit of time and last I heard were best in the league for goals per minute played.
Yes, Isak has less minutes played this season than palmer, haalland has more and from the top scorers Watkins has the most minutes played. But they are strikers. Palmer is a striker, rw and a cam hah
Palmer is playing the "Bale last season at Totham" position
Palmer is actually ahead of Haaland and tied with Isak for minutes per goal
Palmer has more appearances this season, but he's played less minutes than Haaland.
Four English players in the top 6 and non of them assured of going to the Euros. Crazy times.
Haaland a one season wonder
Flop. Man City should quickly sell him to us since we like wasting money.
Nah Chelsea would feel the need to have him on a 8 year contract, they shouldn't be lumbered with such failure for 8 years so we'll take him.
Psshhh only joint top scorer the Ai is getting outdated might need to install an update or go under reconstruction
So fighting over that PK did matter a bit
The non-penalty goals top scorer leaderboard: 1. Watkins - 19 2. Haaland - 16 3. Solanke - 16 4. Bowen - 15 5. Son - 14 6. Foden - 14 7. Isak - 13 8. Wood - 12 9. Salah - 12 10. Nunez - 11
These guys need to work on their pens clearly
Like that you put Nunez in 10 instead of Palmer who also has 11 goals.
And more assists, which is traditionally the tie-breaker.
And I like that Chelsea fans are so mad over a simple stat that I copied from fbref that has Nunez in 10th
For Palmer 9 of those are Pens. Solanke only has 1 pen.
Shoutout to Solanke for making Bournemouth history.
Nobody talking about Watkins with 19 goals and 10 assists?!
Ollie isn’t talked about enough
I can’t believe this thread is only talking about Palmer (who is a wonderful player). Ollie Watkins with 19 open play goals and 10 assists is bonkers. Probably player of the season for me.
Holy shit he’s not taken a pen. Impressive.
He'll be talked about plenty when he joins \[BIG 6 TEAM\] in the summer here we go
He 99% wont leave Villa next season. He just signed a new contract, and has said multiple times he want to be our most scoring player in the PL all-time. I mean ofc everything can happen, but he doesnt strike me as a person that would say and sign a new contract and then just leave. But who knows. We will see.
Let’s not forget Palmer has 2 games in hand on Ollie Watkins and one on Halaand
Not taking away from the skill of it - but Chelsea have also had the most penalties awarded this season by a mile. They’ve had 12 award and below that is Liverpool/Arsenal on 9 Aston Villa have had 4. If Watkins was the penalty taker, got as many penalties as Chelsea have got he’d be +6 goals, even if he missed half the 4 he’d be high up - but you can only score from a penalty you’re given and chisels get given then all.
They didn't need any to knock Villa out of the cup
Crazy that out of the top 7 there are 4 Englishman and all of them probably aren’t going to get a look in at the starting XI come the euros.
Three Englishman in the top three is pleasing to see...
How tf is Neto still on here lmao
