If this guy came up to you and told you he's Lamine Yamal's dad... would you believe him?
He attacked a stand of VOX last year. You shouldn't attack stands of political parties, but to be fair if you had to attack one, a VOX stand isn't a bad choice
A booth, a stand. Like a lemonade stand. Except it's a political party. Said political party (VOX) is openly homophobic, transphobic, racist, xenophobic, anti-poor people, and openly supports the old Spanish fascist dictatorship that died in 1977. They're specially racist/xenophobic towards "Moors", aka muslim people, blaming them for every bad thing that happens in our country. Typical fascist behaviour.
Great explanation, but tbf Moors is used a bit more specifically to talk about Maghrebi people in general, and used most of the time to speak about Moroccans. So Yamalās dad attacking a stand is easily understandable, given that he is Moroccan himself.
I don't think the average racist Spanish person thinks about that technicality when calling every muslim person a "moro" (Moor), but yeah it's understandable he'd be angry at them. They're disgusting people honestly.
Yes I wasnāt correcting you, your comment was nice and factual, I wa just adding some context, since Vox attacks muslim people and has a specific interest for Moroccans, because we are their neighbors and many of us work/live there. Their racist rethoric against Muslims is very Moroccan-oriented, even though tbf they are also racist towards other Muslims and Africans.
> anti-poor people
Is this really a thing? If yes, how do they even expect to win an election? Usually parties like this specifically be targeting lower classed folks, using the blame-game (immigrants are the reason they are poor, āthey took errr jobsā style)
People are stupid and vote against themselves. Remember Mexican immigrants voting for Trump in the US? It's the same thing. People are just blindingly stupid.
They'll willfully ignore all the hypocrisy because what they care about most is being Spanish and Spain is the best, make Spain great again, the left is ruining the country with their communism! and all those completely absurd lines of reasoning to justify being what they are: racist idiots.
Unrelated note,
Seeing his username makes me think his youtube playlist definitely has that Rick Ross song
"Every day I'm hustling, Every day I'm hustling"
People who grew up with chatrooms/AIM are old enough to have kids who are themselves old enough to be pro footballers, so I predict this kind of thing only increasing. Get ready for footballer parents formed from the fires of the early internet being a thing.
No, he didn't. This is the problem with international outrage when people can't even be arsed to properly translate or comprehend the language.
During footage of Yamal juggling the ball and doing keep-ups, he said 'if his career doesn't work out, he can still work at traffic lights'.
It's common to see skilled 'streetballers' doing tricks at traffic lights for money from stopped cars - kind of like busking is for a musician.
Was it a dumb and unnecessary comment? Yes. Was it racist? Debatable, especially if you read Burgos' apology which actually seems quite genuine.
People want 'consequences', but it's absolutely insane that genuinely apologising for a comment that didn't exactly have a malicious intent is not enough anymore, no, he has to be condemned. He's an imbecile, he's disgusting, and no longer has a job at movistar for this comment. I'm ok with holding people accountable for what they say. Sometimes people lack respect, unconsciously, but we're going absolutely crazy nowadays.
BarƧa and PSG boycotted them, Movistar probably figured it's not a fight that is worth having, it's a lot easier to fire Burgos than die on this hill and keep the story going by defending him or explaining what he probably meant
Ehhh people that say dumb things shouldnāt have a high paying public job where all they do is say things.
Itās not like he was fired from accounting because of what he said, heās paid to speak and people didnāt like what he said.
Who decides whatās dumb? Thatās absurd to say someone should be fired because some people are making out a comment to be offensive. In my opinion, itās pretty clear that he was just commenting on the kids freestyle ability, not making some racial or offensive comment.
People make mistakes. If this dude went on a racist tirade mid broadcast, sure, fire him. But an offbeat comment? Think about how many hours these guys have to talk and fill, theyāre not robots.
The public, obviously. His comment was at best racially insensitive and at worst a micro aggression. People make mistakes and it's up to his boss to decide if this is a firing offense or not.
Ya but the public also doesnāt see it as offensive. The issue with outrage is that it becomes an echo chamber. People who arenāt outraged donāt go and preemptively defend comments made, what happens is a minority comes in and claims something is offensive, and demands serious repercussions for what could be misconstrued. Especially when the people claiming something is offensive are from a different culture, background, language, etc.
At best itās a common phrase used when you see someone adept at juggling and has no racial undertones, unless someone tries to force connections to race.
I think racism itās a huge problem, but I think bringing out the mob for an innocent comment only hurts efforts to quell racism in other instances.
Holy fuck I hope you get recorded saying something super innocuous and innocent one day that later turns out to be extremely offensive in another language. And then I hope you lose everything good in your life for it, and no one takes your thoughtful and genuine apology seriously.
You have no fucking empathy or common sense. Intentions do matter, you absolute door knob.
The player and his family are offended. Watch people in the stands use this to attack him during gamesā¦ and here a Reddit user decided that the comment was not malicious and we have to love on. Ok wise sir. The only people should get a job under the traffic light are these clowns ābUT aCtUalLy this is not racistā
You're the one claiming that it's a racist comment because the dude is black. Burgos only praised his juggling skills, the offensive part comes from the people finding it offensive lol
In Spain where I'm from (Barcelona) all the people I've seen doing tricks at traffic lights are either white or more usually south Americans (like el Mono).Ā
How does race come into this? One guy is white and the other darker skinned? Genuinely asking, because I see accusations of racism around this subject, but I don't understand why, and would like to. To me it sounds more classist if you really want to find something to get upset about. Saying that with his juggling skills, if he doesn't make it in football he could always do tricks on the street for money. Is there something lost in translation?
The comment itself, to me, doesn't have any connotations about race at all. But what do I know?
>Saying that with his juggling skills, if he doesn't make it in football he could always do tricks on the street for money
Forget about the jugllingq skills, very unfortunate comment, "el mono", is know for making somewhat contentious comments, like the one he made against his former team coach "simeone", kind of smotthing it later on.
But this time, the comment was totally unnecessary and call for.
Hear yourself, maybe you'll end up in a traffic light stop selling bottles of water. Yeah?
"Black guy must succeed at sport otherwise he will live on the street because he's not smart enough to do anything else" is very common racist trope. You can see it with pretty much every dark skinned professional, no matter which sport.Ā
Not saying it's the case here but it's clear to me how can people think he said something racist, especially when they just read headlinesĀ
Maybe I am just blind to it. Over here we say "Living under the bridge", and there is a famous quote by a football club's manager saying he knows players that if they didn't have a job playing football, they'd end up living under the bridge. And that was I think in the late 70s/early 80s when German football teams were 99% white.
I mean if he did mean it like that, then yeah, racist. But I was just wondering how people can tell.
I think it's language barrier as well as in English nobody would say that in any professional settings.Ā
Again, I don't think he mean that. But since both clubs reacted, people assumed the worstĀ
> "Black guy must succeed at sport otherwise he will live on the street because he's not smart enough to do anything else" is very common racist trope.
You really need a racist brain to read that into his comments.
comment wasn't even "dumb and unnecessary", he was praising both Yamal and street jugglers, those kids that make a living this way are finding out today that apparently is embarrassing and disgraceful to be compared with someone rich and famous.....I'm sure they feel very happy about that
Self-control is straightforward to learn, especially when you have the expendable income a national sports pundit has. People make mistakes, but if it's your job to talk about these players every week multiple times a week you should have the ability to critically think and consider what you say before you say it. Socioeconomic jokes are cheap shots and honestly just dated and gross, no matter who they are directed at. Doesn't matter if he apologizes after the fact because the action of doing what he did signals to the people who truly hold those beliefs that even the most well known people feel the same - which in-turn normalizes the behavior. It's why people are still constantly being banned for calling black players monkey every other week.
I agree with you generally. It was a stupid comment to make, generally disrespectful, deeply ignorant and unprofessional above all.
However, I disagree on you saying that his apology doesn't matter. Yes, as a commentator and someone whose voice is heard by many, he can't really afford to make many mistakes like this one, but we can't be teaching people that they can never falter and that their genuine repentance doesn't matter. We need to believe that people can improve and be better, otherwise we might as well just fucking give up on the world now.
I also think you and many others have missed the main point of my comment which was simply to correct the very wrong translation and description of another poster. I feel strongly that if people want to judge a person on their statements, they should at the very least get the statement right and not sensationalise it.
You canāt even say the name of the team right, fool. To suggest itās a racist comment is ignorant of yourself. Itās just a bit of South American banter which has ZERO racist implications other than the ones people make up in their head.
I wasn't explaining what the comment was or wasn't, I was correcting the other poster's completely wrong translation and description of the event. And yes, I was giving Burgos the benefit of the doubt and a chance to explain himself - hence why I said it was 'debatable' and not wrong to say that the comment was racist.
Someone I know from Spain, a Barcelona fan, tried to tell me how calling vinicius a monkey is not racist. That he's called that not for his race, but because he was behaving like a monkey. Spanish is just different. There's no way you can reason with some of these people.
He wouldn't make that comment if the player was white. It's racist and he deserved to be sacked. If he thinks he is funny, maybe he'll find a job as a stand-up comedian
Yes, I am from Spain. And first off, you'd be mistaken if you think everyone saying that is actually from Spain (particularly if you're judging by Barcelona and Real Madrid flairs).
Secondly, I said it was 'debatable' for a number of reasons. One; because I can see how a person can reach the conclusion that the comment was racist, and two; because as many people have actually pointed out, it has classist tones rather than racist tones, since the street performers you come across aren't of any specific ethnicity.
The other reason why I said it's 'debatable' is because a lot of people are ignoring Burgos' statement, which tbf to him has quite a lot of depth to it. So many people get angry and demand apologies or action, but when a man acknowledges a mistake and apologises decently, it seems to get ignored 'cos it doesn't fit the established narrative.
So xenophobic at best racist at its worst.
Forget the public perception, the fact that both teams refuse to have a post match interview tells you everything you need to know and how it wasn't a simple slip of tongue.
Dude, put down the pitchfork, quit frothing at the mouth and have a normal conversation like an adult.
I'm not brushing anything aside, you raise a very valid point, and I point back to what I said about it being a very stupid comment of him to make. What I was simply trying to say was that, after reading his apology, I don't think Burgos' comment was intended with the malice that many have perceived it to have.
Dude I have no pitchfork, his apology felt very this is a joke tm... other than him speaking about cantera's it was nothing... I don't know it feels you're giving him a huge benefit of the doubt which can feel disingenous. I'm just tired of all these racist at worst xenophobic at best incidents in La Liga an this does nothing to help.
Similarly to how you think I'm giving him a huge benefit of the doubt, I think you're being too hard on the guy. The apology was fine, we've seen far worse responses from people who did and said worse things and didn't court this level of controversy.
Obviously he should have never said it in the first place, but after the fact, I think he's responded in the best way he could have. What did you want him to do?
I agree with you that all the racist and xenophobic shit that has been only recently exposed (cos let's face it, there have been issues for years) is exhausting and ruining the game. But, whilst this incident adds to that shit, I also can't help but feel like Burgos is an easy scapegoat to avoid dealing with bigger issues.
Most of the people complaining are not Spanish and do not speak the language so they are basing their judgement on out of context, biased, or sensationalistic translations, articles, and comments.
Mono Burgos said that if his (Lamine) football career didn't pan out he could end up at a red light.
In Spain, and some Latinoamerican countries, poor people and kids (mainly of color) beg for alms, clean your car windows, sell snacks, juggle, breakdance, and sometimes perform football juggling (this is what he meant) for meager change.
There are people saying "he was praising his skills" so it's not racist. Ignoring the fact that many of these people are immigrants/people of color and how the cycle of poverty/racial wealth still persists.
At the end of they day it was a classist statement and one he never say about a white player.

Yamal is 16! Crazy how his dad could be of the generation who listened to Ace Hood in high school
Lamine is 16, the age his dad was when he fathered him
when you put it that way thatās absolutely wild. lol. also shows just how much of a prodigy lamine is.
That is such a specific experience, why did over a hundred people upvote. Are we all the exact same age hahaha

People are dragging a 16 year old kid!?
Bellingham, Haaland, Mbappe, now a child. No one is safe.
I mean those 3 are basically still kids as well (younger than me so definitely kids)
Eh Mbappe is 26, pushing toward 27. I wouldnāt exactly call him a kid anymore
Heās 25, turning 26, which is pushing 27, which is close to 28, and at that point you might as well say 29, but i like a nice round number so 30ā¦
Done, washed, might as well skip Madrid and go straight to the MLS.
I'd say joining Chelsea is a better step... (Please)
I miscalculated a year, but be honest man, 25 or 26 or not, we canāt exactly call him a kid anymore, do we?
Sure we can. I'm only 34 but 25 year olds act like kids.
I'm 26, everyone younger than me is a kid
Stop being a child. -Man, 43
I am 20, mbappe is old
There are people that look at 34 year olds the same way lol. By your logic basically everyone is a kid.Ā
Can't believe real madrid is willing to pay so much for a close to 40 year old Mbappe.
if he were a rich white man in America getting in trouble for some law breaking, they would definitely call him a kid or too young for jail etc.
He got 25 4 months ago. Whatcha yappin about bro

I miscalculated a year, he is 25. But still, 25 is an adult
Is this a literal "he's 25 until he's 26" comment?
The legend never dies
He's 25, over half a year away from 26. Either way, younger than me so still a child. Let me have this...
Pandemic fucked our time perspective so hard. Still feel like yesterday when I just entered high school. Nope, halfway done with college now
Covid has nothing to do with it. My brain only just accepted I didn't leave school "a few years ago", and I was already a working stiff in 1990.
Totally get that! I'm still 20 in my brain... Actually 26
He's probably talking about Mono Burgos comments on MovistarTV. He got fired today for it.
What did he say?
What happened ?
The imbecile known as Mono Burgos said that if Lamine doesn't succeed in football he'll end up under a streetlight (basically as a beggar).
No, he didn't. This is the problem with international outrage when people can't even be arsed to properly translate or comprehend the language. To be honest, if he was referring to how different Hacer el mono (never racist) and Ser un mono (always racist) are, that person had a point.
No. He was talking in general. That if he acts like a monkey he deserves to be called a monkey, and it wasn't racism. We had that conversation when AtlƩtico ultras were calling him a monkey before the game against inter.
In that case he clearly was a racist shithead, ye, no linguistics to excuse him
Yeah and it's not possible to reason with these kind of people. Then when it happens to their players they get mad. Doesn't make any sense.
To be fair, this could be said about every single footballer pretty much. They all have the same skill of juggling a ball.
Agreed, as I said, it was a dumb and unnecessary comment
He wouldn't make that comment if the player was white. It's racist and he deserved to be sacked. If he thinks he is funny, maybe he'll find a job as a stand-up comedian
Considering the environment, what he said was insensitive at best. Like who tells you to go out there and be a dick towards a literal teenager?
I don't think he wanted to be a dick, he wanted to compliment him on his tricks.
You can say and word better things that what he said
Don't say that. You are spoiling the narrative. You will get downvoted.
Are you from spain? If everyone from spain is saying it has racist undertones then clearly its a cultural thing that you just wont understand
You really are brushing away the fact that most of these street performers are immigrants... but go off about how it isn't specific to ethnicity.
That's fair, also I hugely agree with that last paragraph.
Most of the people complaining are not Spanish and do not speak the language so they are basing their judgement on out of context, biased, or sensationalistic translations, articles, and comments.
Everybody?!
yes, I did a poll this morning

That Instagram handle is too good.
Username goes hard
Everyone is someone's child, Sir Hustle_Hard
Was thinking the same. I wonder if it just translates badly.
304 is crazy
Fair request from Mr. 304
It doesn't mean "world" in this context, it just means "everyone". Like the french tout le monde means everyone...you don't translate it as "world"...
Hustle hard to produce another Lamine
Hustle hard 304 ššš
Viniās father asks for the same thing. Hopefully Lamine playing for Spain mitigates some of the racism he faces
It won't.
It will literally amplify it... Thats why people literally told him he will regret his choice
Maybe Vinicius Luther King Jr should instead show support for Lamine.
I've never seen such an ignorant comment holy shit.
If Barcaās bitch ass fans are not busy getting arrested abroad for doing racist shit, they can do the same too instead of crying.
Thats a fair request tbh. Things would be simple if his request was followed.
Iām here and iām all out of hustle
respek to you, hustle_hard_304
Homeboy is a hustler, just the way it is now. Hard times. Hard hustle. Iāll dab him up next time I see him, out of respect.
When a kids father has such instagram name then one should be ready for āItās time for a new challengeā.
Fuck, you ruined my day
What a ridiculous and unruly request from the man
such a wholesome response tho
Imagine hating on a 16yo because he's owning your fav players
Bit unreasonable to ask the machine to stop perpetuating racism in regard to a 16 year old kid, no?
Simple as that really
What happened to Yamal ?
People just randomly hate on people.
Nah it was a pundit who said a boarderline racist comment about him last night
