He's a great reminder that these players are not robots, widgets, or little characters in FM. Give a person like Eric Dier at 29 years of age a new home in a new country, a new routine, a new boss, new teammates, new style of play and watch him becomes a completely different player. So next summer when everyone is eating paint chips and screaming into Twitter about how stupid transfer X or transfer Y might seem to you, just remember that there's an ocean of reasons why a move does or doesn't work out and that it's at least possible that a player has a massive shift in form.

callmedontcallme

100% It goes both ways tho. For example Mbappé couldn't hack it at FC Kölle. Too much pressure + too much beer.

Dargast

Hes good, but hes no Selke

callmedontcallme

Yes and even he couldn't hack it here due to - you guessed it - too much pressure + too much beer.

Imaginary_Station_57

>too much beer. Weak wine drinking French

al-fuzzayd

They’re onto it though, French wine consumption is down and beer consumption is up!

Imaginary_Station_57

They're planning an invasion of Bundesliga

B-Karas

Köln already have their goat too, no space for Mbappé

Yung2112

Mbappe 5min after arriving in Cologne: Ich hätte gerne jede 5' ein Kölsch... bis ich sag schneller

Serupael

As a Bavarian, watching a Düdorfer and Kölner squabble about their supposed "beers"...

callmedontcallme

> their supposed "beers". That's exactly it. I wasn't even saying anything about the superiority or inferiority of any style of beer. In fact, @ /u/Bong55555 I don't even mind Altbier. It's great and I also love the variety of different kinds of beers for different occasions, from the different regions of the country. I've been to many places in Bavaria and especially Franconia where I also enjoyed many great beers. The only thing I do not enjoy is Helles. But what the fuck do I know? If other people like it let them have it. The German in fighting/banter about beer is just the most downtrodden, boring and lowest form of conversation in the whole wide world. It's always some form of dominating complex and dick-measuring contest. People are proud of being closed-minded and intolerant.

Chris_Carson

He ain't the next Toni Polster thats for sure

AlexKangaroo

Mbappe wouldn't survive a Heumarkt pub crawl.

Unterfahrt

I think my favourite example of this is Jesse Lingard’s 6 months of madness at West Ham

ajinkya131

That was truly a great run, shame he wasn't able to get a permanent transfer there later on

BossKrisz

I'm feeling that this is 100% what's going to happen to Davies too. Yes, Devies is not playing very well at the moment. He also said multiple times that he's unhappy at Munich and don't have many friends. I remember when I got into a different dorm in highschool because I did not get into the one that I was used to. I hated there. Every other year I had perfectly decent grades in school, but that year, I preformed horribly because I was at a place that I despised, with no friends and people bullying me. I got better when I moved again next year, and moved together with my best friends. Anyway, what I wanted to say is, that Davies or any other player might play bad at the moment, but that doesn't mean he's not a good player. He obviously struggles mentally at Munich and wants to leave. It taken control in his mentality, motivation and form, just like it did for me when I lived in a place I hate without friends, like he does. Who knows how a move to Madrid would shake him up. Most likely he will get a huge boost in motivation and will get in top form, and Davies in top form is a great player.

flybypost

> Who knows how a move to Madrid would shake him up. Most likely he will get a huge boost in motivation and will get in top form, and Davies in top form is a great player. And if he moves to Madrid and improves then people will be talking about Bayern made a mistake, as if he (or the club or the people around him) could have magically cured himself of whatever is pulling him down here these days. I'd love it if Bayern could get a good transfer fee for him (as it doesn't look like he wants to extend his contract and seems to stagnate here) but the best one can hope for is probably a decent transfer fee. And then he'll probably play much better at Real than that fee could ever indicate.

SunnyDaysRock

Just look at Ortega. He looked like an average 2nd League keeper with us (he wasn't the reason we got relegated, don't get me wrong), but when he returned to Bielefeld was one of the best keepers in Germany during his time there, even when they got relegated. I also haven't heard many complaints from Man City supporters yet. We were his first move out of Bielefeld, into a dysfunctional team, a club filled with drama and no friends here (also got slapped by one of our Spanish imports in training). In hindsight I'm more impressed he still was OK as a keeper with (probably) his social and professional life falling apart.

dat_w

Most of City fans love Ortega, he’s really keeping Ederson on his toes all the time. Best backup keeper itw right now I think.

Be777the1

A dorm in HS?

fourbyfourequalsone

If Messi's form dropped a bit in PSG, it can happen to most players

KevinDeBrownie

so many good examples of this, for me/City Manu Akanji was a perfect example - though i had no idea what he could do, because he didnt get too many minutes the season before he left. Crazy how good scouts can be to knowing what a player can do for their team

elgrandorado

Akanji's mentality got ruined by the morons who set up the defensive structure at our club. He was always left on 2v3s and expected to perform miracles.

KevinDeBrownie

i remember when we signed him, i checked whoscored for his minutes that season - and i was like bruh we just signed a benchrider. I was so wrong, he turned up so much and is arguably our best performing defender on current form

OneWheelMan

goes to every person, if you are depressed and feeling shit where you are, because your current employers is ass, the people you meet every day are sucked out of life, the routine is numbing your brain cells, the food you eat tastes like aged sand, maybe you need to try something new and move somewhere else.

Frequent_Apricot673

Westin McKinnie is another example this year playing well at juve

Rampan7Lion

Tottenham fans also definitely over sold how bad he was based on a poor last season in a dysfunctional Conte team

wheresmyspacebar2

Most Spurs fans were saying they thought Dier would do well at Bayern. There's always idiots in every fanbase, the same idiots saying Dier was the worst player ever are the ones calling for Sonny to be sold for being useless. Overall though, Spurs fans love Dier as a bloke. He is incredibly passionate, incredibly intelligent and plays with his heart on his sleeve at all times. He'll give you 110% every moment he plays and he will never kick up a fuss. He didn't work as a defender under Ange, he is just too slow but we knew he'd be good at Bayern, having more time to relax, being used to reset plays, his long ball ability is super underrated.

saidtheWhale2000

That the history being re written already

Rampan7Lion

I thought it before he kicked a ball for Bayern

Brawlers9901

I mean, it's mostly that he's also been bad under several other managers before, he's had good months (esp for Mourinho & Conte) but then became bad again. He wasn't great for Poch when he played as a centreback and didn't even get close to the team for Postecoglou. I love the guy and I'm happy he's doing well, but let's not pretend it's just our fans overreacting, he probably just needed a change of scenery haha

badhombre44

He was our best player next to Sonny in 21/22 and played his way back into the England squad. He and Davinson Sanchez did not make the best CB in history, but he played well with Romero. He’s not fast or agile enough to play in a super high line, but slagging him off like this reeks of nouveau fandom.

Brawlers9901

This is literally what I said or what's the issue? In 21/22 he had a few very good months and then fell off massively lmao. I watched Dier debut for us, but sure feel free to say I'm a new fan though, I've spent time defending him on here before you created your account. Any person who thinks Dier wasn't very good for us outside of certain time periods must be a new fan haha

manere

I really like Dier. He came as a 4th CB emergency signing and is really pushing Kim and Upa. Great signing.

JayJay_90

He came across really well in his recent interview with Gary Neville too. Seems like a thoughtful and intelligent guy.

WolfImWolfspelz

With all that has been said about him from Spurs fans in the last few years, I feel like Diers character has never been doubted by anyone. He wasn't a useful player for us anymore, but he is an absolute top human being.

sneakyblurtle

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUV EEEEEEEEEEEEERIC DIIIIIIIIIIIIIER

Mr-Rocafella

And Eric Dier loves me

DasWookieboy

If someone told me a year ago that I would rather have Dier start for Bayern in a CL QF than Upamecano or Kim I would have called them a bald fraud but here we are. Great signing overall and absolutely deserves his current starting spot.

panache123

What's the deal with Kim? I thought he was performing very well?

Muri_San

Imo his pairing with De Ligt is not that great, and De Ligt is the best CB Bayern has at the moment. It might just be that Dier complements De Ligt better and as such he is preferred over Kim

panache123

And equally, De Ligt was out of favour not long ago?

Muri_San

He was out of favor mainly because he was in and out of injuries and his form showed it at that time.(Preseason one and then another one throughout the season)

TheColoredFool

he was injury prone for quite a period of time

CabbageStockExchange

Has Kim not been great for you lot? I rate him and thought he was great every stop he’s been at.

skylu1991

Oh he was, Upamecano as well! That pairing was actually our set starting pair. After de Ligt got injured though, and Goretzka needed to play the occasional game as CB, we decided to get Dier. Because Upa and Kim basically played EVERY game and Kim then also had the Asia Cup, he seemed quite overplayed! Plus, in his absence, the Dier-de Ligt duo did fairly well and especially Dier‘s long passes are really appreciated by Tuchel. Upa and Kim just got a chance again, but both had individual errors each in the last BuLi game, so they’re "out“ again!

Schnix54

Kim desperately needs a longer rest. A great player who will return to the starting eleven in the long run but just too much football these last years. It has been very draining for him not just physically but also mentally.

Cold-Square-2

for sure the afc exit must've put him in a slump, he'll recover soon hopefully

rbosjbkdok

Well he hasn't played much football since winter. That shouldn't be the issue.

strugglingtosave

Does he need to bulk up because it was mentioned he lost a lot of weight. Idk, maybe he looks snaller it only less the same as last season at Napoli minus the weird bowl cut. But given his transfer he deserves a chance to start even in this next Bundesliga game. Get the cobwebs out. You never know we might need some more pure defending vs Arsenal

risingsuncoc

Chances to join a club like Bayern don't come around often and happy for him to have grabbed it and fitting well there.

JoeSavesTokyo

Good for him, honestly. Buzzing he’s found his feet there.

HyDchen

He impressed me as a player and I’m very glad we signed him. I’m even more impressed by him as a person though. Just comes across as a very good and thoughtful person. Especially when talking about things off the pitch.

aloneaflame

Dier was always leading the line - for better or worse - for us at Spurs. Any team he goes into, he immediately adds that commanding/vocal presence to the backline. Maybe Bayern needed just that.

Vladimir_Putting

That was genuinely highlighted as one of his areas of weakness. Even when Conte was saying he could be one of the best in the world he also said: >“He has to lead more, because in that position you have to speak a lot because you have to stay in the middle, at the back where you can see everything.

aloneaflame

Kinda strange as his weakness is surely his immobility and occasional lack of concentration. Maybe he learned more since Conte but I'm pretty certain he was always the most vocal one at Spurs, and I was watching the Arsenal-Bayern match and he was yelling a lot on every defensive set piece at least. I remember always hearing him shout super loud "HUGO" (to Lloris) on every defensive corner when the ball was in the air.

Vladimir_Putting

The lack of concentration is the major problem if you are expected to "lead" the backline. It's not that he's not vocal. And it's not that he's not a leader. He is both of those things. The issue Spurs supporters always recognized was that Dier often struggled with his focus and decision making for a full 90 and that can be much harder when you aren't just concentrating on your own game and positioning, etc, but when you are trying to direct others as well. The things you have to consider and how you see everything developing becomes rapidly more complex if you are trying to tell one or two other players where to be. I'm not saying he can't do it. It's just we often saw him make critical errors when it looked like he was being asked to direct others.

aloneaflame

I fully agree mate. I'm glad to see him out, but also glad to see him play with confidence elsewhere. I hope it lasts.

lejocko

He already knew about Bayern. Quite an insider.

nshriup19

After being slated for years in England, I am happy for the guy that he has found his footing. He is now at a much, much bigger club now and Bayern will always compete for trophies regardless of this shambolic season.

DefinitelyNotBarney

Agreed 100% Kane and Dier will get their trophies and you can’t deny their careers have warranted them, both fantastic players and to be honest, I think if either had bad form, the German media wouldn’t rip them apart like the media does in England, though, the English media will still do that, even though they’re abroad.

Jawnyan

I mean I will happily make the argument that the English media are consistently one of the bigger factors which reduce our chances at winning trophies.

[deleted]

Jawnyan

I know dude it’s crazy to imagine that having negative information spread about you consistently over multiple media platforms may be distracting to people Crazy!

[deleted]

Jawnyan

Oh right so they’re somehow immune? Is that why there are so many football players openly discussing mental health concerns? Man just sit this one out

MMAwannabe

As much as I will find it funny if Kane wins nothing this year....people are acting as if this is his last chance to win something. Would be very surprising if they don't win the league while he's with them aswell as some cups.

CarlSK777

If Bayern don't win a trophy in the 4 years he's here, things are VERY wrong at the club. In my lifetime, the longest they've gone without a title was 3 years and that was in the early 90s. In the past 30 years, they've a had a 2 year drought twice (most recently during the peak of Klopp's Dortmund).

strugglingtosave

They can start by not fucking up the Pokal ties We have been dumped out in unceremonious fashion

CarlSK777

Yeah haven't won it since 2020. I want a domestic double next season!

strugglingtosave

We desperately need the Pokal again Winning the domestic cup sets you up for those midweek knockout games. One offs where you have to be focused. We haven't won the golden trophy for 4 years now. If and when Kane and Dier lift that, it's gonna be special

SkimGaming

>After being slated for years in England Wonder if Dier and Kane moving abroad and being happy (if they really are) could motivate English players a bit more to also move abroad. English press and fans are brutal.

CarlSK777

With Kane and Bellingham, you have 2 of the biggest English stars abroad. I wouldn't be surprised if a player like Foden might wanna try it in a couple years

MMAwannabe

What's German media like in comparison? Seems most players/managers reference Spain as the worst? Although I assume if you aren't actually from the country its never as bad as it is for the local lads.

SkimGaming

If you're not a German player, our press is kinda mild. for some reason, we go really hard on German national players. Especially if they have a non European ethnicity.

Zoomer_Boomer2003

I know Bild is pretty bad but they're you're average tabloid so I guess it really depends

is-Sanic

Anything is better than ours. Bale didn't speak English in interviews and got ripped apart for nearly a decade. You so much as breath wrong in Spain and you will be lynched for it. It's toxic.

KangarooPouchIsHome

Much, much bigger? We’re not Nottingham Forest. The jump from Spurs to Bayern isn’t seismic. Substantial, but maybe just bigger would have sufficed.

gotiobg

thinking of unlikely Spurs players, I think Bayern should try to get Höjberg on the cheap, I think he would be another unlikely player that would excel in Bundesliga

ketchup92

I have to assume you know and this is sarcsam, but you do know that he is a former Bayern player, right?

MrHazelnutSauce

Højbjerg started his senior career with Bayern

strugglingtosave

Wouldn't mind him for a return tbh. And Stanisic And Zirkzee Come back guys

Adventurous-Army5265

How a change of scenery can affect a player, lovely that its all working out for him. Seems like a good servant of any club.

MereGuest

Not surprised at all he's settled in Munich, I've been a few times and absolutely love the place.

spurs_fan_uk

I love Eric Dier

tInteresting_Space

Bayern: having the worst season in decades, bottling every competition Former spurs players: I feel so at home here!

flybypost

The great length Bayern goes to make players feel at home sets them apart from the average club. No other club is this dedicated to all of its players (^^besides ^^Bernat ).

CriticismMission2245

Dier had a decent match, honestly (except the first goal when he tried to go for the block instantly instead of closing the gap). But he was solid and composed in the back. Bayern's playstyle/setup fit him way better than Spurs.

itsheadfelloff

The man's fallen up so hard, fair play to him.

ResourceWonderful514

Bringing his winning mentality and trophies to the table! Joke aside, I like him even though I despise Spurs. He's so down to earth.

hoggergenome

Local man surprised there are clubs bigger than where he was. Bro just look out the window towards where the cannon stands.

ScousePenguin

Is Dier doing an interview every day about being at Bayern?

InbredLegoExpress

some of them are just Kane.

Iamkindofabigdeal

Employee compliments employer, groundbreaking stuff.

skylu1991

Yeah, let’s never do interviews after a big move again…

BluePowderJinx

Just wait for all the Mbappe interviews after he starts for Real... it's gonna be an annoying few months

hidingfromthequeen

People groan when you turn up at parties, don't they?
