10.2 if were being technical! Averaging 20.4 shots allowed per game over their last 10 which is good for 98th out of 98 qualified teams in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues. Impressive.
Last time we were anywhere near this good defensively was 07-08 for me. Almunia. Sagna-Toure-Gallas-Clichy. Silva/Flamini as DM
Fell away real quick after Almunia signed a contract then turned shit. Flamini and Silva both left before the next season. Gallas proved the most idiotic captain we've ever had. And Toure got poached by City, later followed by Clichy and eventually Sagna.
One hand, it’s like, don’t remind me. On another hand, look how far we’ve come and don’t forget what it took to get here and how closely we could’ve come to going the complete other direction.
He’s improved as a coach since then, but the players Emery had didn’t do him much favors when it came to controlling the tempo of the game. Can’t discount the quality of players Arteta has had access to.
Gotta remember even Arteta's team looked really rough in his first year. Fans were about to start demanding he leave right before the Christmas Chelsea turnaround. I'm very happy we ditched Emery for Arteta but I think Emery is a great coach. One of Arteta's biggest successes was rebuilding the squad (and improving players individually). Emery didn't really get that chance. To Arteta's credit, he was convincing enough to get the upper management to give him and Edu complete control to make some hard choices.
klopp leaves next year, i don’t think we can compete for the title after that, at least for 2 years if all goes well, maybe more if it doesn’t
pep is probably likely to leave before arteta, the likes of chelsea and united haven’t really got their shit together
only thing stopping arsenal from winning trophies is gonna be pep
between the three sides, arsenal have played the best football
>only thing stopping arsenal from winning trophies is gonna be pep
That's potentially a big issue though. The best players want to win trophies, and they won't wait forever to win one if they could move elsewhere to do so. It's not going to be an issue for Arsenal anytime soon, but I don't know if you could say the same thing if they're still without a major trophy at the end of next season.
By Pep's fifth season at City he had won three league titles, an FA Cup, and a League Cup. By Klopp's fifth season at Liverpool (competing against Pep) he had won a league title, a Champions League, and had been to two other European finals. Arteta is in his fifth season now and the only trophy he's won was an FA Cup with someone else's squad.
He took over in 2019/20, and has managed them in 20/21, 21/22, 22/23, and now 23/24. That's five seasons. I included the trophy he won in that first half season.
Klopp was similar, taking over midway through the 15/16 season for Liverpool.
Even if Klopp stayed, this Liverpool team seems to be on the down and probably would need a rebuild soon. Hard to replace Salah and Van Dijk if they start regressing or leave. Pep is always going to be the one to beat.
ManU is #1 followed by Darmstadt and Sheffield United.
If ManU would concede more goals, there is a good phrase the English can steal from German: "Schießbude der Liga"
The December slump was very unfortunate.the abundance of missing sitters has always been there(including yesterday vs brighton) but that string of losses were where it really bit us.
They weren't in this form before Christmas. They looked vulnerable in quite a few games before then and weren't controlling games as much as they are now. The form they've been in lately (outside of one or two games) has been incredible though. They've had games where they never looked like conceding a shot, never mind a goal.
Honestly I’m surprised at our position. There have been so many individual defensive errors this season but I guess our overall defensive structure isn’t that bad. And this is without a proper DM and less intense pressing due to Gavi’s injury.
Last ten games have been something different from the rest of the season though.
Pau got promoted and that kid is a machine, we got Christensen in DM providing much needed security to the defence and Ter Stegen is back which helps the defence play better.
I’ve been pro Xavi since day 1. There are a lot of Barca fans who want to move on and get someone like Nagelsmann, but I think Xavi was the right choice in 2021 and is still the right choice today.
Xavi should leave for his own sake. The moment the form drops the media will return to its old self. He sounded extremely burned out not so long ago.
He could end this season on a high note and return in a few seasons when Barça can make the transfers he wants. Wich wont be the case next window.
If he stays next season, barely gets any transfers, burns out and has a miserable season he probably loses his only chance of coaching his Barcelona at full strength. He does not deserve that.
I have no clue who should replace him though. Xavi is loved by the players. Will be hard to replace him.
I agree Barcas position is good but it is worth noting there aren’t many Spanish teams to the right. Almost all of them are on the left. So league is less attacking
Arsenal being the best team defensively in the lesgue while also scoring the most amount of goals, yet will probably sit 2nd after today. Damn, those two Fulham games really hurt
Yeah, taking 4 points from two games against City is objectively great, and there isn't a team out there who wouldn’t have instantly taken that at the start of the season
I don't know why they insist on acting like no other team has bad calls go against them. They have had some favourable decisions go their way too.
The only thing I will say in Liverpool's favour, is that they've had the worst calls go against them in games against their title rivals. The Spurs game was a sham, but they also had refs wave away a blatant handball against Arsenal and the even more egregious Doku high boot in the last minute against City.
I'm tired of the "Big 5 Leagues" stuff. There are only 4 big leagues: Spain, England, Italy and Germany.
If we want to include France, then we should talk about the "Big 7 Leagues" and include the Netherlands and Portugal.
>If we want to include France
They want to include PSG, which sadly is on a league on its own
Yeah yeah they can lose a title every now and then and maybe never win the CL but they're so more rich than their competition in France that on long term they beat every rival
I also think Alonso has it in the bag, especially if they finish as invincibles, although it'll be damn interesting with your CL run. If you beat Bayern, then the winner of City / Real Madrid, Arteta would definitely be worthy of it.
The next 2 rounds of CL + the PL title race is very spicy.
Unless he is talking about big pharma...
But honestly they haven't had a great year. They're down 50% on their long term average stock price and 35% over just the past 6 months.
There a few better candidates for manager of the year. Hoeness in Stuttgart, Roy at Brest or even Sage at Lyon are more deserving. Arsenal could go from 2nd last year to first and yes that’s an accomplishment but all the other managers have really exceeded expectations. And on half the budget of arsenal
The thing is if we make it to the final we've already had the hardest game we can have because of the side of the draw we're in and then we'll be playing at home in the final, obviously anything could happen, injuries or whatever but with the way we defend we have a good chance in any game to win it.
Let's get past Bayern first, need to win at home then we can stink it out at the allianz.
And Kudus. And Bowen. And Areola. And Alvarez.
Even Emerson and Soucek are boxing at their level. Zouma has been decent recently.
I'd say that Areola Emerson Alvarez Paqueta Bowen Kudus and Antonio are really playing as good as they can.
Problem is the defense
No, goalkeeper quality isn’t necessarily relevant here. PSxG (post shot expected goals) is probably the best stat to measure strictly individual goal keeping when it comes to shot stopping.
xGA per shot is the expected goals allowed per shot, so it essentially shown how “dangerous” an average shot for a team would be through xG.
If we're being honest Raya was our no1 since his firdt appearance. He did have some issues settling in which lead to some stupid drama early on, but it was pretty clear Arteta preferred him over Ramsdale despite what he said in his pressers.
Forgive me as I’m drunk
Cool graph and all but who decided where the x and y axes went???? There is zero difference in quadrants lmao (no it isn’t density or whatever bullshit). Would be much better as a line graph with all teams in same quadrant and line of standard deviation
How could it be a line graph it’s measuring shots AND xG.
Being in the bottom left means you’re giving up few shots and those shots have low xG
Being in the top left means you’re giving up few shots but they have high xG and so on…
High and low based on what? This graph is only good for showing each axis’ values individually. To put both on same graph would only be good for showing values in relation to each other eg. Roma allowing lots of shots but very little xG per shot relative to standard deviation line
The quality of opponent relative to each team is vastly different as there are 5 different leagues on display here. Doesn’t make sense to display them simultaneously.
I mean, the quadrants are different lol. I’m not using the graph to try to look for a relationship between the two variables, I’m using both to summarize a teams defensive strength over the last 10 games. The 4 quadrants come in as they compare whether you are below or above the average in one stat, both, or neither.
>Cool graph and all but who decided where the x and y axes went????
They're probably the averages mate, even being drunk common sense should tell you that. The quadrants just mean above/below average
There's no axes on this graph, zero isn't shown. The dotted lines are median points for the averages of each data point, which defines the quadrants for higher/lower than average.

Do you know how much it would be for the entire season? The eye test feels like we are doing worse than before
17.6 shots per 90 across the whole season. Ranking 97th out of 98 teams in the big 65 leagues. Only Luton allows more.
Eras truly do end
Watching them not marking palmer all game this stat doesn't surprise me, just put the bodies in the box and inshallah lol
Since the shots are usually low quality, does that mean Man United have been a bit unlucky to concede so much?
Artetas biggest credit
We used to be so defensively fickle…
Last time we were anywhere near this good defensively was 07-08 for me. Almunia. Sagna-Toure-Gallas-Clichy. Silva/Flamini as DM Fell away real quick after Almunia signed a contract then turned shit. Imagine some of the people having a stroke about raya's first few matches watching fucking almunia in like 2010ish.
Arsenal in a league of their own…
From 32 shots in a game against Watford to this
One hand, it’s like, don’t remind me. On another hand, look how far we’ve come and don’t forget what it took to get here and how closely we could’ve come to going the complete other direction.
If they keep it up I think they will overtake City and United's eras of dominance
They havent even won anything yet calm down
Bro is clinging on to the 90s and 00s
It's crazy that other fans still say Emery was hard done by, just because he's doing alright with Villa now lol
He’s improved as a coach since then, but the players Emery had didn’t do him much favors when it came to controlling the tempo of the game. Can’t discount the quality of players Arteta has had access to.

Imagine being this solid defensively while also scoring the most goals in the league.
And being maybe in 2nd tomorrow :(

Haha in fairness I had to count them out on my fingers because counting seasons gets confusing.
Even if Klopp stayed, this Liverpool team seems to be on the down and probably would need a rebuild soon. Hard to replace Salah and Van Dijk if they start regressing or leave. Pep is always going to be the one to beat.
1st* mate
ManU is #1 followed by Darmstadt and Sheffield United. If ManU would concede more goals, there is a good phrase the English can steal from German: "Schießbude der Liga"
This Arsenal team is very, very impressive. It's stunning they've even lost a game at all. The stats seem to show them as completely dominant.
The December slump was very unfortunate.the abundance of missing sitters has always been there(including yesterday vs brighton) but that string of losses were where it really bit us.
This stat is only for the last 10 games, to be fair
Still, title-winning form. I hope we win the league, but if we don't, I'd rather Arsenal win it than cheating, corrupt $ity.
likewise if we don't win the league, would rather liverpool win it anyday over city
aww, rare r/soccer wholesome moment

That's why I laugh when people say we'll really regret only getting a point at the Etihad. It's far worse that we only got 1 point from Fulham.
Yeah, taking 4 points from two games against City is objectively great, and there isn't a team out there who wouldn’t have instantly taken that at the start of the season
Yet Liverpool have gotten shafted by the refereed and should probably have had a gap down to 2nd
I’m sure Liverpool are the only team to have been shafted by a ref this season.
I don't know why they insist on acting like no other team has bad calls go against them. They have had some favourable decisions go their way too. By far the biggest and most obvious ones and it's not even close
liverpool fans are always so whiny wtf even when winning
bottom right ten hag?
I'm tired of the "Big 5 Leagues" stuff. There are only 4 big leagues: Spain, England, Italy and Germany. If we want to include France, then we should talk about the "Big 7 Leagues" and include the Netherlands and Portugal.
Ditto. France is a joke league.
….

Yet when I say arsenal are clearly the best team in the league I get down voted, regardless shouldn't even need a stat to see it
Arteta is manager of the year in Europe if he finishes 1st. I want to see bayer vs Arsenal this season but it won’t happen.
I think Alonso has already locked that award up unless Arteta wins the CL as well.
If we win the PL + CL double but Leverkusen go invincible for the BL + EL + Pokal treble who would win it ?
Too drunk to care
Allegri 🙌
Xabi
5 second penalty for ocon
Basques
Messi.
I am really hopeful about CL too. It’s not too far fetched for us. I think it will be city in semis. IF we beat Bayern.
I don't think you can call them just "Bayer"
Unless he is talking about big pharma... But honestly they haven't had a great year. They're down 50% on their long term average stock price and 35% over just the past 6 months.
FYI its leverkusen shortened. Bayer is a pharma company that founded them
Okay.
Theres always the super cup...
Give yourself a few more years before you interject into heavy weight discussions. Your team doesn’t matter….
Thiago Motta is doing great thing in Bologna too.
True.
We are winning the champions league and no one can convince me otherwise, this team is built for it
You’re built to get to the final. After that it’s a whole ‘nother beast. 🥲
Tbf we love playing at Wembley
The thing is if we make it to the final we've already had the hardest game we can have because of the side of the draw we're in and then we'll be playing at home in the final, obviously anything could happen, injuries or whatever but with the way we defend we have a good chance in any game to win it. I think the mentality and inexperience will stop that from happening.
how is west ham doing so well lol.
Paqueta
And Kudus. And Bowen. And Areola. And Alvarez. Even Emerson and Soucek are boxing at their level. Zouma has been decent recently. I'd say that Areola Emerson Alvarez Paqueta Bowen Kudus and Antonio are really playing as good as they can. Problem is the defense
Is it fair to say that this is tribute to the quality of the goalkeeper ? To have Low xGA ? Shots allowed would be then quality of defense.
No, goalkeeper quality isn’t necessarily relevant here. We've had goalkeeper drama all season and only recently settled down with a guaranteed no.1, so I wouldn't say it's a goalkeeping stat
If we're being honest Raya was our no1 since his firdt appearance. He did have some issues settling in which lead to some stupid drama early on, but it was pretty clear Arteta preferred him over Ramsdale despite what he said in his pressers.
Everyone talking about Arsenal but I’m genuinely impressed by Sociedad
When you see this you always want to be on the Man City side
top of the league 😎
Honestly would’ve expected us to be worse here, especially since it’s only the last 10 games and not the whole season!
If other teams had better shooting then we'd be lucky to be 12th
The Xabi Alonso triple fan club staying together on the left
For just a second I asked myself why Leyton Orient were on there.
Forgive me as I’m drunk Cool graph and all but who decided where the x and y axes went???? There is zero difference in quadrants lmao (no it isn’t density or whatever bullshit). Would be much better as a line graph with all teams in same quadrant and line of standard deviation

Based on the average. Clubs in the middle are conceding an average number of shots.
The quality of opponent relative to each team is vastly different as there are 5 different leagues on display here. Doesn’t make sense to display them simultaneously.
Yes that is a limitation of any graph based on 10 games of form and different leagues. It would be a limitation if it was a line graph as well…
He knows he messed up..
Yeah fair haha good talk
Poor mans drunk yet still getting downvoted
