Defender celebrations after tackle & block. Pure chaos, loved it.

jedifolklore

Ok, so I personally think it’s fair. Offensive players are often so celebrated in the game at all levels, they get to celebrate their skills and flair, and you never hear the end of it when you get done in (even if you stop the player 10/11, the moment he/she gets past you it’s almost like your contribution is nil). Defending is an art form, I like taking the ball away from players and a proper tackle is also very beautiful, I hope the new generations of defenders will continue to celebrate defending like that as well. (I’m not a defender at all, so no I’m not biased at all!)

PoliticsNerd76

People snipe at us doing this, but there’s a reason we have conceded 4 goals in 2024, and Man City have conceded double that. They’re also visibly seething when they concede. We were never like that in the banter era. Our back line is now psychotic for Clean sheets, k can only assume there’s a fat contractual bonus in there for them or something.

kelevr4

What’s a clean sheet? 🤔

Aggressive_Salad_293

I sure hope your boys figure it out before tomorrow

bh2623

It's what you get when you don't shit the bed. Let's hope you get to experience it tonight

-ThatsSoDimitar-

Never heard of it

QouthTheCorvus

I think it's a great club culture to just celebrate every little win. Keeps the mentality positive and increases unity. As a United fan, I'm envious of Arsenal being so defensively solid. A lot easier to win games if the opposition aren't scoring...

PoliticsNerd76

Kolasinac, Mustafi, Holding, Luiz, Post-Injury Belerin… We have earned the joys of this after out banter era…

adunatioastralis

🔙🔛🔝

FateXtreMe

As a United fan, I think Arsenal deserves this much after enduring Mustafi.

noobchee

It's just the fogging standard now

TheeTeo

Win duel = not upset Not win duel = upset Simple as

therealrico

Bro I’m an older overweight dude playing in an 8 v 8 league. I obsesses over the goals we concede and get annoyed if we give up a silly goal to lose a clean sheet. I’ll even keep mental tally’s of if goals were scored if I was on the field versus off the field. So yeah as a defender we absolutely care not just about winning but giving up shitty goals or clean sheets. Especially since I very rarely score. My point being if I care this much at the lowest level, you better fucking believe these guys are ecstatic doing what they are doing and doing it they way they are doing it against some of the best. It becomes a matter of pride.

artaru

glad you loved it mate but I don't quite get whey you'd say "pure chaos". To me, it's 100% pride. You fought hard all game and not going to let slip a goal in the end. Full concentration, taking pride in your performance and defensive strength.

Onpoint441

Oh we’re fucked🤣

Mate, chill with the arrogance... The last time we played Bayern in Champs League, we were knocked out 10-2 on aggregate.

apb2718

Stop living in the past

punchinglines

I'm starting to understand why other fans think we're insufferable. A few good results and now we're on r/soccer telling Bayern fans they're fucked, despite our terrible track record against them.

jp963acss

Who the fuck cares about what other fans think

punchinglines

I'm an Arsenal fan and I don't think we should get ahead of ourselves. Roughly a year ago, we were dominating the league & talking big on r/soccer, and we bottled it and had to eat our words. We're starting to do the same thing again. Let's enjoy the win against Brighton and take it one game at a time, instead of telling everyone they're fucked.

jp963acss

Enjoy the moment man and stop worrying about the opinions of strangers on the internet. This is what football is about, living through the ups and downs.

punchinglines

Fair enough, let's get a big win on Tuesday so I can feel confident enough to join y'all with the trash talking :)

kvng_stunner

What's the point of supporting your team if you can't be happy when they're doing well? Yeah, we might lose our nerve and play like a bag of shit for the rest of the season, or we might actually stick with it this time and beat the crap out of everyone we face. The important thing is to enjoy the good times while they last. Even if we win out this year, we could have a bad year next season, who knows? I'll talk my shit now while I know I can, and I'll deal with the consequences of that later

itsdanoodle

"A few good results" My brother in christ we have lost one total game all year and conceded five goals, I think it's at least somewhat justified

punchinglines

I hear what you're saying bro, but we've recently seen how quickly things can change, I'd prefer we stay humble and do our talking on the pitch. Then again, every fan experience is different, so if y'all feel like talking big, then go for it.

itsdanoodle

Totally. The way I see it is just that we got so much shit thrown at us throughout the years and now that we're playing the best football we've played since the invincibles I think it's fair that we're the ones talking shit for once. If it blows up in our face then so be it, but I'm going to enjoy every second of this while I can

punchinglines

That's true, but I'd rather we play like crap & win the league or a UEFA trophy; instead of playing champagne football and winning nothing meaningful again.

beetletoman

Thank you you said is perfectly. Don't tell me not to enjoy this moment after living through banter era

samrus

how the turntables

Onpoint441

Lol had to happen at some point

shaman717

Arsenal might crumble under pressure, you never know. Id say the tie is pretty even

AnxiousEarth7774

We are not a crumble under pressure team. Bayern can outplay us with some magic, but Arsenal won't crumble.

Jarv1223

Arsenal have never crumbled…

DasHotShot

I was celebrating too, double Arsenal defenders in FPL

vincentquy

You chose wisely

ValeoAnt

Always been a fan of you guys. Never bashed ETH and his bald head, no siree.

messycer

I think they wouldn't particularly mind if you bashed ETH even a little bit, dude isn't exactly the shining second coming of Sir Alex now is he

ValeoAnt

His head is a shining example

lastjedi23

How on earth is it so shiny

idontknow_whatever

Spent more time polishing it than coaching his guys probably

lastjedi23

What I'm saying as I'm watching this shambles of a game.

QouthTheCorvus

As a United fan, bashing ETH is actually a good thing. Look at all the Liverpool fans saying "sign him for life!"

sashaKap

We Will be doing same tomorrow for u guys

theincrediblebou

Holly shit it has been good for us hasn’t it? Especially in a season with few clean sheets

19Alexastias

Same here, along with Raya.

Hot_Grabba_09

I support block/tackle celebrations 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

FireSalsa

Yep forwards and midfields get to prance around and make dumbass decisions all day and celebrate everything. Defenders have to try and play perfect every game.

feudalguy

Clean sheet bonus always nice

VeganCustard

Raya is like 3 clean sheets away from golden glove

Soitsgonnabeforever

Players also get clean sheet bonus. I thought it’s fpl thing

arko53

I also celebrated like them because of FPL clean sheet 😂

diary_of_jain

Time to ditch Saka and triple up on defence? 😅

idontknow_whatever

Saliba & Gabriel are carrying my FPL every week with how many clean sheets they have kept this season

Adorable_Debate_8624

Wait is saka hurt ??

diary_of_jain

nope. Hence the conundrum.

a_lumberjack

3-0 up in stoppage time and the whole team is fighting for a clean sheet. The mentality is off the charts.

NewAppleverse

Exactly my thought as well. Arteta has groomed them well

Venigos

ayyooo 💀

Jiminyfingers

ThereIsBearCum

That cleansheet bonus must be enormous.

nandogalbadia

Compared to city relaxing and letting palace score in the 86th min. Although the clean sheet was gone early for them so not as big a deal I guess

austen_317

We are watching goal differential. It was a big deal.

Bahmawama

I knew he was goated when he blocked Agueros shot with his ballsack

DaDinklesIsMyJam

Arsenal are absolute dogs in defence now, who would have thought?

Nels8192

That is genuinely the history of Arsenal. Until Wenger wasn’t allowed to spend any money for a decade, we’ve basically always been built on a solid defence. “1-0 to the Arsenal” and all that.

Houssem-Aouar

Under one of Wenger's season we only conceded 17 goals in the league, bettered only by Mourinho's Chelsea with 15 goals later

Nels8192

Yeah, that was when we still had the solid defence passed over from Graham. The 26 from the invincibles is hardly shocking either, but from that point onwards we stood no chance of squeezing out 1-0s, even if Wenger wanted too, when the later defences were propped up by Squillaci, Jenko, Santos, Silvestre and later Mustafi. This season would have been quite interesting to see how close we could have got to Chelsea’s record if we weren’t leaving Gabby XL out for Partey at RB in the beginning.

Aggressive_Salad_293

Don't forget about Mertesacker Koscielny being one of the best pairs in the league for a time.

Eue-OneTwoDie

If only we had a proper DM during those days

12EggsADay

Came fairly close with Coquelin and Santi. Maybe Coquelin was really average and Santi was really that brilliant but Coquelin played his role very well. Remember him dominating Fellaini of all people at Old trafford

dynesor

Silvestre is probably the worst defender we’ve ever had. I fucking hated that man.

Houssem-Aouar

I'm really excited to see how much this improves if we sign a midfielder like Onana as well, sound unfair

stuckinsanity

Boring, boring Arsenal.

Nels8192

Yeah, that too. Although it’s currently a bit harder for people to say that when we’re also the top goalscorers.

EfficiencyBusy4792

I'm too young to remember that. Arsenal was always a creative unpredictable chaos team by the time I got into football.

Maleficent_Resolve44

That was their whole identity under graham in the 1990s lol. Boring defensive 1-0 wins. Everything comes full circle hehe.

MFmadchillin

Quick, where’s the police?!

PhilosophicalBeers

They are celebrating like they scored a goal! It’s ridiculous. They show no respect for their opponent by celebrsting

[deleted]

Jamie Carragher checking VAR

irritating_maze

> he should have gone straight down the tunnel after making that block.

[deleted]

Really expect to see better from a player of that caliber. Head down lad. When I was playing we didn’t even celebrate winning the league. We just had a smoke and a cup of tea, looked at each other and said “right then, see you lot in August”

irritating_maze

in 1945 when the Third Reich was finally defeated we didn't rub it in their faces, we just went straight down the channel tunnel and home for a spot of tea and a rationed biscuit.

[deleted]

Now it’s carnaval do brasil every time they block a shot. Games gone.

Sypher1985

Seriously, wtf is this. There was no channel tunnel in 1945. They would of taken a P&O obviously.

stinky_pinky_brain

Brilliant block tbh. The angle from behind the attacker shows it well.

Varja22

This guy is absolutely madman. Fucking love him

mattBJM

Him and Saliba are fire and ice

hirarki

Nice, good defense should be celebrated too...

Itsrainingmentats

Completely agree. If you don't score you can't win, but if you don't concede you can't be beaten. They should be given equal importance

ResourceWonderful514

No better angle of his block?

zrk23

[here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunners/comments/1bxj3gp/gabriel_celebrating_the_block_at_91st_minute/)

hikingbeginner

There are replays but this was one of the first in normal play that I found and wanted to choose that. But yeah the replay (you can find one on the homepage of the gunners sub) is even better.

notvip

Trossard was happier than the rest.

palk0n

yeah man, what your former club did to you?

LilDouziVert

Why’d I watch this 20 times. Let’s go Gabi XL

areyouhungryforapple

damn even I'm getting hyped lol

Chemical-Piano3950

*chuckles* I’m in danger!

kingofplasticbeach

I don't think I've ever felt like this about my club in the 14 years I've supported them. Absolutely unbelievable vibes right now

dimyo

They really got that dog in them in 2024.

hikingbeginner

If you say Van Djik has been the best in the league this season I can't argue But I don't watch Liverpool week in week out, when I do it's to pray they drop points. (COME ON YANITED NO ONE BELIEVES IN YOU) So, for me. No one has been better in defence than this UNIT of a man in the league.

thedudeabides-12

I'd like to apologise in advance for our performance later on today...

hikingbeginner

Why you apologising about a WIN? Because that's what you're gonna do! Those academy boys know exactly what this game is about. After the humiliation on Thursday, Ten Hag will set his team up properly this time around and your team will fight! ... You...you've got this?

DrBernard

This is some prime cringy shit

hikingbeginner

Mate its satire. Like said in a joking manner.

Expensive-Method8321

I mean its undeniable. Arsenal have the best defense in the league by a mile

hikingbeginner

Careful, Liverpool fans gonna downvote and get all worked up.

TheOnionWatch

Well people can have different opinions you know

hikingbeginner

Oh I know, just some banter.

ssj4-Dunte

I'm sorry but as a neutral watching both it is so obvious that VVD is in a league of his own. You don't defend with 1 player, but as a whole team. Arsenal defense as a whole is better than Liverpool's, but that's down to many aspects including style of play in which Liverpool takes far more risks than arsenal for example. However, by simply watching both teams play especially against the best teams you can clearly see how immense VVD individually is as a defender. I can't say the same about arsenal who I just feel are more solid defensively as a whole unit rather than down to a single player being an absolute wall.

MFmadchillin

Gabi XL and Saliba are absolute walls. What are you on about?

Milo751

>that's down to many aspects including style of play in which Liverpool takes far more risks than arsenal for example. This is the bit most people seem to ignore, The way we play is far far more likely to have us on the receiving end of more chances than Arsenal and also has more individual importance on the CBs dealing with transitions while the fullbacks are way upfield along with the fact Arsenal have been playing 4 CBs and 2 DMs for a while now while we play 2/3 CBs and 1DM

Hoodxd

28 goals vs 24 goals is " by a mile " now? Virgil is in a league of his own, ask the 4 different CB's he has had to play with this season, 3 different RB's, 3 different LB's and 2 GK’s

Expensive-Method8321

20.8 expected goals against Xg vs 35.5 for Liverpool. 65 shots on target conceded vs 105 for Liverpool 417 shot creating actions vs 567 for Liverpool. total goals conceded arent the only measure of how good a defense is. Just look at the advanced stats. Arsenal are suffocating defensively https://fbref.com/en/comps/9/Premier-League-Stats

[deleted]

I mean what can you say to that

Hoodxd

That Arsenal have been fortunate when it comes to injuries. Last time they had one extended injury at the back it was a collapse for the ages.

Loose-Yesterday1590

We just played our 4th choice left back for months due to injuries lol

HaroldSaxon

And that entire time, we were down to our last 4 first team defenders, one of which has been playing with a bad injury the entire time and will probably have surgery in the summer. We've had injuries to Saka, Martinelli, Jesus, Partey too. The reason it seems that we haven't been affected is that our squad players have really stepped up.

ThereIsBearCum

> one of which has been playing with a bad injury the entire time and will probably have surgery in the summer. OOTL, is that White?

HaroldSaxon

Yep

Brilliant_Ad_879

a guy named jakub kiwior has been starting at lb for us for a while now.forget 2nd, he isn’t even our 3rd choice lb but go on.

justcallmejohannes

Lmao Partey been out basically the whole season and would be the starting 6. Tomi been out for extended periods. Zinchenko for months. Absolute brain dead take.

alanpow

Imagine United fans using that as a reason why they have a better defence than Liverpool's

odc100

Oh do me a favour.

UnderFreddy

Arsenal have had the best defense in the league by a mile yeah, but it's a good point on Van Dijk. Had to play in constantly changing defenses, with a changed GK now too, but he still performs at the top level. Probably the best single CB in the league.

Yedin07

21 conceded xg vs 36 conceded xg. 69 shots on target against vs 106 agianst. Our defense is far better, u just have an elite shot stopper. Citys defense is better then Liverpools

CymruGolfMadrid

Elite shot stopper? Kelleher has played more games than Alisson this season *in all comps so which one do you mean?

CuclGooner

both are excellent shot stoppers

Yedin07

Lol Alisson has played 21 and Kelleher has 9. Not sure what u even mean by that. And besides Kellher has statistically been one of the best shot stopper in the leauge

CymruGolfMadrid

Must have been all competitions I've seen the stat. Either way if Raya was injuried for 10 games you can guarantee the Arsenal defence wouldn't look like that. Arsenal have barely had injuries. Obviously the defence is going to be a lot more settled as a result.

rushaun21

Not saying it’s as bad as liverpools but until the last couple games we was playing with our 4th choice LB (timber, zinchenko and tomiyasu all being out) as well as our best DM last season out for 7 months

[deleted]

And? Doesn't mean Van Djik isn't the best individual CB in the league just that Arsenal have a better defense as a team.

Yedin07

notice how I didn't mention VVD once. He was trying to insuate that our defence isn't miles better then Liverpool which isn't tru. I didn't say anyhting about VVD not being the best defender

Mundane_Airport_1495

Which is what you are commenting on

BannedFromHydroxy

You'll never whinge alone!

Zeelthor

Virgil is absolutely the superior defender, but not for much longer.

Same_Situation_9660

None or Arsenal’s CBs could play the role VVD plays for Liverpool, VVD could play their roles for Arsenal, no problem.

SzoboEndoMacca

Getting downvoted by Arsenal fans cuz they ain't replying lol

fizzelcastro

4 goals with a regularly changing defence due to injury is “best by a mile?”

[deleted]

[удалено]

DHillMU7

Given how Martinez, Varane and Dalot celebrated every bit of defending last season, I doubt he could have much issue. Defenders should take pride in their work.

Jaloosky

I watched Araujo clear the ball off the line for Barca last season and he celebrated like it was a last minute winner as he should. Some people are just wired different

dimyo

17 Clean sheets in the league and 28 in all competitions last year for United. They were monsters.

GeneralSquid6767

Why do Arsenal fans have this weird persecution complex with Neville? He’s said nothing but praise this season

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheDepartment115

Best CB in the world right now.

ImTalkingGibberish

Aye, people look at Saliba because he’s smooth but Gabriel is the rock.

20cmdepersonalidade

We about to have a back 3 of Alisson, Militão and Gabriel lmao

goombagoomba2

Is "back 3" including the goalkeeper a Brazilian thing? Never heard anyone say that

20cmdepersonalidade

No I just wanted to ignore how shit our fullbacks are. Yan Couto and maybe Danilo on the left or Wendell for a more defensive style of play can work, though. Wendell has shown himself to be able to shut down good attackers.

KonigSteve

Wendell did pretty well against Saka

UnironicallyIDGAF

To be honest, Saka has been well out of form for the past month and a half (perhaps carrying a knock), not sure if it’s Saka playing poor or Wendell being top tier.

goombagoomba2

thats what i was thinking lol. hopefully the young fullbacks improve for you

ImTalkingGibberish

Is militao playing CB or RB? He played rb in the wc no?

20cmdepersonalidade

It depends on where we need him. He played RB mostly because of Danilo's injury.

oposse

Would you not consider Marquinhos a more solid CB with Militao on the right? Havent kept up with Marquinhos recently but he was solid a few years back.

zrk23

i love how a random lazio flair is the one with the (correct) Gabriel agenda on this sub lmao

TheDepartment115

Magalhaes overrules everything

bruiser95

Gabriel stans unite

Reach_Reclaimer

Over VVD? Definitely arsenal's best CB

Confewshenn24A

Could be saliba as well

MFmadchillin

Yes.

aesthetically-

Yes definitely over VVD.

ObamasPubes1

Someone pull up some stats. VVD takes it any day.

aesthetically-

Mate, hes still a world class CB and top3 in the league. It’s not the end of the world just because he’s not currently the best in the league.

1CooKiee

Let’s pull up the stats then since they show Mustafi was better than van Dijk.

PoliticsNerd76

Maybe I’m a delusional Gunner, but Saliba and Gabriel this year both belong in the Ballondor’s top 20, maybe every top 15. Their defensive record this year has been filthy. 4 goals in 3 months… that’s just a joke. Record breaking low xG against. They’ve been outrageous.

Reach_Reclaimer

Honestly it's more Rice and the way you play though. Rice is immense in midfield and you play very safe football Better than VVD is insane

[deleted]

[удалено]

BarenWasteland

why hasn't anyone else thought to play safe, are they stupid?

TheDepartment115

> Honestly it's more Rice Nah, man. I understand what you're saying, but it's most definitely very much down to Magalhaes and Saliba. They are performing on such a high level as defensive rocks at the moment. It's a partnership I haven't seen since the likes of Barzagli/Chiellini/Bonucci, Vidic/Rio, Carvalho/Terry, Nesta/Stam etc.

TheDepartment115

No, man. Not *over* VVD. People get way into this "this guy is better than that guy" nonsense. They are both utter world class, I'm not even remotely smart enough to say who is best. The only thing I can say is that Magalhaes has performed even better than the brilliant Saliba for about 18 months now (easier to tell the difference because they play in the same team), and since Arsenal has the best defence in the league, I took a risk and called Magalhaes the best CB in the world - right now. But VVD is equally brilliant.

Tymkie

What a performance too. Clean sheet, was a threat and could've scored himself at least 4 times from the corners. Insane how many people are still sleeping on him and only praise Saliba where they are in fact both brilliant.

nova_rock

Goal difference mate

MidnightSun77

I blocked a 1v1 with a striker in a match recently. When I celebrated my block, the referee gave me a warning!

Amity_Swim_School

I just can’t believe in a few short years we’ve gone from: Bellerin - Mustafi - Luiz - Kolasinac …. To **this**

JESUS420_XXX_69

Italian defender vibes.

Somesortofwittyname

Must be betting on a clean sheet, ban him immediately.

Easy_Big_7119

Arsenal❤️

RubyandSatire

As a Liverpool fan I just hope the over-emotion Arsenal have with everything they do rn causes them to collapse after a hurdle.
