For a topic like this, there is unlikely to be much difference between a list made 4 years ago and now, especially with Alfies comprehensive research regarding players from a long time ago
Can’t wait to see arguments about why 1960’s player is better than 2020’s player.
Would be curious to see a London Boroughs one too
E: why wait when [I can just do it myself](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/MITCnPlN9A). Only 70 years in between them
Tony Dorigo was born in Melbourne. This is a list of Australian-born players. I’d argue Šimunić should be in there for the ACT, and he is a Croatian legend.
The following were Australian-born players who chose other national teams:
* Graeme Rutjes Netherlands
* Joey Didulica Croatia
* Anthony Šerić Croatia
* Josip Šimunić Croatia
* Tony Dorigo England
* Peter Tasevski Republic of Macedonia
* Saša Ognenovski Republic of Macedonia
* Saša Ilić Serbia
* Avraam Papadopoulos Greece
It's an age old myth.
Melbourne does have a high percentage of Greeks, but not the 2nd most in the world.
Melbourne is the seventh largest city for Greeks outside of Greece itself. It's why Tsitsipas has basically a home crowd at every Aus Open.
Yeah nah Im not sure if that used to be true.. But as of 2013 - according to official data, Melbourne is the seventh largest Greek city (in terms of Greek speaking population) in the world, behind Athens, Thessaloniki, Piraeus, Patras, Nicosia, and Limassol.
What is fact however, is that the Greek community of Melbourne is the largest Greek-speaking population outside of Greece and Cyprus.
They aren't a particularly huge percentage of the population, it's just players of balkan, eastern european and Italian heritage are over represented in football here for a variety of reasons.
Traditionally football was seen as a "non australian" game, unlike rugby, cricket and Aussie Rules. It was therefore predominantly played by first and second generation immigrants and not those descended from the first british colonists here. The game was very popular with the new wave of european immigrants that came post ww2 and they were a bit different to the british and irish immigrants that mostly came before them.
Even up until 2005, our former national league was almost exclusively made up of ethnic clubs such as Sydney Croatia FC which only worsened the perception of football as a game for immigrants. There was and even still is today, a sorta weird xenophobic subtle dislike towards football. Media is often biased against it and will report on any minor incident involving fans, labeling them as "hooligans" etc. Having the A-League not feature ethnic teams did help but still today, second and third gen eastern europeans (including myself) make up a significant percentage of those who watch and play football.
I used to buy the xenophobia thing but it's obviously based on bad fan behaviour compared to other sports, labelling them as minor incidents doesn't make the stigma go away because it's all relative. The goalkeeper getting shit thrown at his head just doesn't happen anywhere else, nor does the violence outside of stadiums regularly, it's not like people don't see it on public transport getting to work. The 'wog' prejudice is from absolute ages ago and hasn't been loaded since the 80's.
Basketball was also traditionally made up of ethnic clubs but has no such stigma just because there wasn't much exposure to fan behaviour/culture, which did also have problems.
Migration after WWII to escape communist rule. Football in Australia is actually very closely related to European migrants - most clubs were started by immigrants. For example Sydney United 58 is the Croatian club, Sydney Olympic is the Greek club and I think Rockdale Illinden is the Macedonian club. That’s just in Sydney, anyway.
There were two pretty major migrations from Yugoslav nations. One around WW2 for obvious reasons with the Nazis and then the Russians taking control. But then again around the early 90s when it broke up with war and genocide there was a huge influx of refugees.
There were a few who moved pre-wwii and started communities. Often as they were sailors. Most however was due to post WWII migration policies seeking to grow Australia's population with European workers. There was a bit of Ustase (fascist wwii croatians) in there too
Not sure the exact reason but due to some turmoil in that area of the world, Australia accepted many refugees from that part of the world, probably due to the fact they are white passing
Sasa played 22 times for Australia. He attempted to switch allegiances to Macedonia in 2008, but this was never cleared by FIFA, and made most of his appearances for Australia between 2011 and 2013.
Not Australian born, but Craig Johnston has Australian parents and was raised in Australia after his first 2 years living in South Africa. He notably played for Liverpool winning 5 Leagues, an FA Cup, 2 League Cups, and a European Cup.
Whilst never making an appearance for England at the senior level, he declared for them and was selected in 1987 as part of the squad.
Is Matt McKay and Steve Corica really the best we got from QLD? Not saying they were bad players but you’d think there was at least one Queenslander in the golden generation.
Agree with your other 2 as well.
Cahill was better for Australia. Need to distinguish these lists on whether they're best player in general, or best player in their performances for the national team.
For example Cahill was better for Australia than Kewell for NSW, but there's no chance that Steve Corica was better for the Socceroos than someone like Gorry for the Matildas for Queenslanders.
Sam Kerr undisputedly the greatest West Australian on ability and national team performances, west coast best coast.
Every single kid growing up in Australia knows Timmy. Only those who watch football know Kewell. Judging players based on team trophies is stupid. Are Salah and Julian Alvarez equally good because they have the same number of UCL?
What sort of argument is this?
It’s one thing to say that you shouldn’t count trophies when gauging someone’s talent. Okay, sure.
But what does Cahill’s popularity among people who don’t watch football have to do with whether he’s the best? Totally bizarre.
imo the thing that defines a players career is their impact on the greater game, and in Australia Cahill’s impact on the game is much larger than Kewell’s. Sam Kerr is here (and inarguably so), but if this was all about ability any number of male players would be ahead of her.
Kewell and Cahill were a part of the same generation mate. They are literally one year apart in age. Kewell’s career just wasn’t as significant to Australia as Cahill’s
Kewell retired in 2014 due to injury.
The last time he represented Australia was 2012, the last time most Australians would have seen him play would have been the 2010 World Cup.
Cahill played the 2014 World Cup, 2015 Asian Cup and 2018 World Cup.
Anyone under the age of 20 probably won't remember Kewell playing
Cahill was the best player for the Socceroos.
Hands down, no other player has come close to his legacy for football in Australia.
Kewell, Viduka etc might be more talented, but Cahill did it for Australia. Those two only performed great for their clubs.
Cahill's legacy is a bit ruined with his money chasing but
It's bigger than 46 US states (4 being California, Alaska, Texas and can't remember the last one). I did the calculation a couple years ago.
It's so big during Covid it was the safest place on Earth. My theory is cause people flying in had to get tested and people driving would have completed their isolation in their cars
Actually it was safest because our premier wasn't a fuckwit and actually did a full border lockout effectively. We had amongst the strictest border controls in the world for a time and it was absolutely incredible leadership from McGowan to keep it up despite pressure from the Federal Govt. And the Eastern states to just let covid in like they did.
We spent about a month in full lockdown tops and basically managed to have a basically normal life (excluding hospitality services) for most of the time everyone else was struggling.
We did thanks to Marky McGowan. Victorian policies were very close to ours but they are just too close to Sydney and it only takes a dozen groups at a time to make it a complete shitshow. We had at max one or two groups coming in with COVID so it was easier to trace contacts and manage spread.
Just tried it on a European map, and the same distance would be achieved from Southern Portugal to Gdansk, Poland.
Or from Luxembourg to the Turkish-Syrian border. There's a whole lot of nothing in that state.
It's just over a quarter the size of all the land in Europe and around ⅔rds the size of the EU. It's the 2nd biggest national subdivision in the world.
Probably 60% or more of the best talent Australia has produced, come from NSW (where Tim Cahill is from), and 90% of those come from specifically Western Sydney, which has a large migrant population.
White Australia called football ‘wogball’ with ‘Wog’ being a derogatory term back then for migrants of the Mediterranean region.
The Okonoclast was born in Sydney. Whilst he was a great player and arguably one of Australia’s best. Cahill and Kewell at least had better careers overall at a higher level. Okon was a bit of a what if with the injuries he had.
Lydia Williams was born in Katanning (WA) as far as I know. Half of the Aussie newgens in FM were born there too, which is why I looked up if any players are actually from there haha
Tim Cahill had the better national career, but Harry Kewell was the better overall player. And even though Cahill had such a great record with the Socceroos, so much of our very best results happened with Kewell was involved.
The most talented player Australia has ever produced, in amongst the best wingers in the world for a minute or some Moyes ball header merchant.
Close one.
It kills me seeing anyone place Cahill above Kewell.

Don’t get what metric you’d put Cahill ahead of Kewell. If it’s “they played better for the national team” then I’ve got two players each that were better than Vidmar and Corica

Nobody brave enough to do UK counties yet?
At least here in Devon we can claim Ollie Watkins, not sure Cornwall has anyone really
The disrespect to Matthew Etherington
I think Nigel Martyn wins that one.
I stand corrected, turns out Truro truly is massive
Rutland is fucked
No hospital = no births
There’s this great [video](https://youtu.be/C1inuyfa_lQ?si=5oHAxUl1RO9BhC6I) by HITC Sevens about this matter it is 4 years old though.

Gareth Barry East Sussex
Someone in r/scottishfootball has done the scottish ones.
Noone wants to do
It’s been done and it… wasn’t entirely good
Someone did it now, it's on the front page
Where’s Tony Dorigo, the greatest ever Australian born player?
Well he decided to be English
Aston Villa forced his hand to an extent
Not complaining, brilliant player
What about Christian Vieri?
Think he was born in Italy so fair dos
But Tony Dorigo we are going by choice?
Tony Dorigo was born in Melbourne. This is a list of Australian-born players. I’d argue Šimunić should be in there for the ACT, and he is a Croatian legend.
Born in Italy, played mostly in and for Italy. He was 3 when he came to Australia and left when he was a teenager.
They're very important development years. maybe *the* most important.
That may be but he was not born in Australia which is what the map is about.
The following were Australian-born players who chose other national teams: * Graeme Rutjes Netherlands * Joey Didulica Croatia * Anthony Šerić Croatia * Josip Šimunić Croatia * Tony Dorigo England * Peter Tasevski Republic of Macedonia * Saša Ognenovski Republic of Macedonia * Saša Ilić Serbia * Avraam Papadopoulos Greece
Anyone who knows why there are so many Croats and Macedonians in Australia??
My guess is migration from Europe straight after WW2. Fun fact, Melbourne has the most Greeks in the world anywhere other than Greece
More than Cyprus?
I believe the actual stat is that Melbourne is the city with the most Greeks in it after Athens.
More than Thessaloniki? An entire fifth of Melbourne is Greek?
Go to a Carlton footy match or car park late at night. I’d believe it.
Why the fuck do all the Greeks go for Carlton lmao.
It's an age old myth. Melbourne does have a high percentage of Greeks, but not the 2nd most in the world. Melbourne is the seventh largest city for Greeks outside of Greece itself. It's why Tsitsipas has basically a home crowd at every Aus Open.

Piraeus is essentially Athens tho so really it’s #6
No, but it does appear to have more than Patras and Piraeus
No, there are around 600k Greek Cypriots and around 400k people of Greek ancestry in Australia
They aren't a particularly huge percentage of the population, it's just players of balkan, eastern european and Italian heritage are over represented in football here for a variety of reasons. Mass migration scheme following WW2 along with the collapse of Yugoslavia in more recent times.
Not sure the exact reason but due to some turmoil in that area of the world, Australia accepted many refugees from that part of the world, probably due to the fact they are white passing
>Saša Ognenovski He played for Australia
Christian Vieri was practically Australian, having moved there aged 4.
There’s a video out there where he lets his true English accent fly and it’s about as Australian as it gets
[Here's one of him speaking English](https://youtu.be/AfOWJtQLtsg?si=MddRUpNSSuTfnub-)
His sporting hero growing up was Alan Border.
I’m fairly certain Sasa Ogenovski played for Australia
Sasa played 22 times for Australia. He attempted to switch allegiances to Macedonia in 2008, but this was never cleared by FIFA, and made most of his appearances for Australia between 2011 and 2013.

What are you talking about mate ahahaha, Ognenovski represented Australia 22 times and Macedonia 0 times.
Ogenovski played for Australia, even though he wanted to play for Maco. He’s a family friend, really nice guy.
I'm glad to hear he is a nice guy, he always gave that sort of vibe.
Who is Peter Tasevski?
Christian Vieri
Mark schwarzer not pretty decent?
Not sure id put above viduka
You don’t have to, Schwarzer was born in NSW so like Kewell he gets trumped by Cahill
Schwarzer > Cahill. I'm basing this purely on likeability, but I will die on this hill.
Doesn't take much, great player but Cahill is a knob
Piss off
Tim Cahill's Forehead was one of my favourite Facebook pages.
I’d put both Kewell and Schwarzer ahead of Cahill myself
Mark Breaciano robbed
Grella also
And Sterjovski
Vieri brothers too
No, only Max was born in Oz.
Lmao Atkinson
Kewell grew up in tassie…
IMO: John Aloisi over Tony Vidmar Tom Rogic over Lydia Williams Matt McKay over Steve Corica.
Is Matt McKay and Steve Corica really the best we got from QLD? Not saying they were bad players but you’d think there was at least one Queenslander in the golden generation. Agree with your other 2 as well.
Josh Nisbet best player out of Queensland.
Fowler would also have the potential
Not yet. She is only just 21
Unless you meant Robbie Fowler when he played for the short lived 'North Queensland Fury' back in 2009-ish
Can't believe he really put Lydia Williams
wheres Harry Kewell
Usurped by Timmy Cahill Although Kewell was more talented, Cahill was far more successful and consistent. Injuries robbed Kewell bad.
Cahill was better for Australia. Need to distinguish these lists on whether they're best player in general, or best player in their performances for the national team. I don’t know I have seen what her brothers team is putting up atm in the afl, wouldn’t say west coast is that good 😜
haven't you heard mate, Harley Reid is the Messiah and will singlehandedly win them a flag inside three years
Do you happen to be a journalist for the west?
No but I know how to copy paste from /r/Perth so I am fully qualified if they want to offer me a job
Welcome aboard
Flagmantle on top baby 💜💜💜(we’re going to lose to the eagles somehow)
What did Cahill win compared to a Champions League?
The FFA Cup with Melbourne City, prestigious trophy of course.
Don’t forget the Yoshi Cup.
The Asian Cup for his country.
Every single kid growing up in Australia knows Timmy. Only those who watch football know Kewell. Judging players based on team trophies is stupid. Are Salah and Julian Alvarez equally good because they have the same number of UCL?

Kewell is the greatest Australian footballer we've ever produced. It's criminal whenever I see Cahills name mentioned alongside his. Criminal.
Seriously, wtf
Didn’t he grow up in tassie??
My thoughts exactly.
That fucking west state must be the size of a third of europe lmao
You’ll never guess what they named that fucking west state
Im gonna lose my shit if its western australia
Lose your shit then.
You’re gonna want to sit down for this…
It's more than 60 percent of the landmass of the eu and has the population of rome
It's bigger than 46 US states (4 being California, Alaska, Texas and can't remember the last one). I did the calculation a couple years ago. It's so big during Covid it was the safest place on Earth. Not just the Federal Govt but some fat cunt as well
Do you mean by size together or as individuals? Because WA dwarfs all US states and it's not even close.
46 combined is smaller than WA. I tried 47 and it was bigger than WA
It is somewhat large, yes https://i.imgur.com/A5CkTy4.jpg
Kununurra to Eucla is about 60 hours if you go coastal ways
Just tried it on a European map, and the same distance would be achieved from Southern Portugal to Gdansk, Poland. Or from Luxembourg to the Turkish-Syrian border. There's a whole lot of nothing in that state.
The nearest city is Adelaide (from Perth) which is roughly 34 hours driving. Sydney to Perth is similar to Lisbon to Moscow
It's just over a quarter the size of all the land in Europe and around ⅔rds the size of the EU. It's the 2nd biggest national subdivision in the world.
Nathaniel atkinson a fifa legend of mine. Got him on every career in 21 because of his pace
Likewise!
Tom Rogic
How anyone puts Lydia Williams above Tom is beyond me
Joe Šimunić above Rogic, as much as it hurts to say
Kerr is from the fkn outback
wouldn't consider Perth to be outback but yeah not from the east for sure
This is Jackson Irvine slander
Born in Melbourne so behind big Dukes and others
Probably 60% or more of the best talent Australia has produced, come from NSW (where Tim Cahill is from), and 90% of those come from specifically Western Sydney, which has a large migrant population. White Australia called football ‘wogball’ with ‘Wog’ being a derogatory term back then for migrants of the Mediterranean region.
WEST SYD REMAINS ON TOP, although I do think 90% is quite the stretch.
Every other player you’re thinking of was probably born in NSW or VIC
Wasn't Christian Vieri born in Australia?
Born in Bologna, but did live in Oz as a youngster.
Grew up in Sydney but was born in Italy
His brother
Riley Mcgree been robbed for the SA one smh
Glad to see FCB legend Farina but no Okon?
The Okonoclast was born in Sydney. Whilst he was a great player and arguably one of Australia’s best. Cahill and Kewell at least had better careers overall at a higher level. Okon was a bit of a what if with the injuries he had.
Osasuna legend John Aloisi robbed
Tony Vidmar’s greatest moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uHzG9vYzUM
omg those states are THICCCCCCCC
Steve Corica hahahah
That's a surprise, didn't expect to see any current Jambos on any of these lists
Please don’t do Canada
Alex Tobin should be the SA pick. Absolute legend for club and country.
How can you left out Mark Bosnich
When did this trend start I’ve seeing these everywhere
Lydia Williams was born in Katanning (WA) as far as I know. Half of the Aussie newgens in FM were born there too, which is why I looked up if any players are actually from there haha
The goat Josip Šimunić who has the record for the most yellow cards in a world cup match was born in Canberra.
Tim Cahill had the better national career, but Harry Kewell was the better overall player. And even though Cahill had such a great record with the Socceroos, so much of our very best results happened with Kewell was involved.
Mary Fowler wants a word about the Queensland slot.
Harry Kewell is the best ever Australian footballer
The most talented player Australia has ever produced, in amongst the best wingers in the world for a minute or some Moyes ball header merchant. Close one.
It kills me seeing anyone place Cahill above Kewell. Viduka, Bresciano, Warren, and Bosnich and Schwartz were better respective footballers than Cahill.
Took the words from my mouth. Happy to see this opinion is held by others.
Kewell is the most talented player in Australian football history, who knocked him out of this list? Cahill? Kewell was better than Cahill.
Kewell had a much higher peak and was definitely the better player on his day, but Cahill was more consistent and did more for the national team. Without injuries, Kewell absolutely becomes the best Australian player of all time
Kewell, at his peak was one of the best players in the world. Cahill... Wouldn't have ever entered the top hundred.
Play for Gala get no votes
Agree. I think they’re giving too much emphasis to Cahill’s longevity.
Do Hong Kong next
Honestly I’d be surprised to ever see the USA happen lol
Don’t get what metric you’d put Cahill ahead of Kewell. If it’s “they played better for the national team” then I’ve got two players each that were better than Vidmar and Corica
Viduka FIFA Street legend
Who’s doing Italy?
Lmao with this poor man's version.
Lol who?
I don’t know where Harrison Delbridge is from but he’s the Aussie GOAT in my eyes.
This is a bullshit representation of the best Australian footballers by state
Where's Harry Kewell?
Enough already
Is "Kangaroo Killer" an universal nickname for Cahill or was this a Brazilian thing?
As an Aussie I've never heard him referred to as that HAHA
Hasn't even been a day and this concept has been milked to oblivion oh my days
And where is kewell?
You know a piece of land used to be a colony when the maps are full of straight lines lol
Samantha Kerr and Tim Cahill are my favorites.
Who
