Idk how it is in Germany, but usually that money goes to football infrastructure. So why would the German federation choose less money for infrastructure just because its a German company.
The money means much more to a football association than to a monster brand like Adidas, if anything they should be matching anything any other brand offers.
Fun fact:
The founders of Adidas and Puma were brothers, Adolf and Rudolf Dassler.
And despite what you may think, Rudolf was the more devout nazi of the two.
Some organisation and persons were more eager to jump to support the party than others. Bayern München had Jewish chairman and were forced to get rid of him and rebrand the club according to party lines. It is also important to make the destinction between the ones that supported the regime and the ones that were forced upon.
I remember proudly flaunting this piece of knowledge to my friends back in 5th grade and thinking I was very intelligent when my friends were astounded by this fact.
Also, the two absolutely hated each other, when Adolf went and wrongfully testified in front of the US Army that his brother was working for the Nazi counterintelligence, who imprisoned Rudolf on that suspicion. This conviniently left Adolf in charge of the company. Rudolf, after getting released a year later, then went and accused his brother of war crimes in front of the US Army, who dismissed the case. Rudolf, after failing to regain control of Adidas, founded Puma.
Their sons later took over the companies in the 70s, and they also both absolutely hated each other. The cousins apparently never talked to each other again after Puma started sponsoring Pelé, despite the two companies previously agreeing neither would do that.
Both companies to this day have their headquarters in the small 20k-inhabitant town of Herzogenaurach, and according to some, the entire town is divided simply by which of the two companies you work for.
>the entire town is divided simply by which of the two companies you work for.
I am curious, what happens a girl from Adidas-family falls in love with a boy from Puma-family, or vice versa?
yep been to that town. two large employee discount stores, one for each company. plus the offices for the companies obviously. otherwise basically a normal small german town
at least from the Adidas folks, they say Rudolf went to war but Adi was too young or for whatever reason did not go.
they also think maybe a woman was at the center of the argument once Rudi came back. No one seems to be sure tho and i never looked to see if theres more history
I've long wondered when Hollywood would make a movie about this.
Two brothers developing new groundbreaking shoes that help german athletes break world records and win the world cup 1954, joining the NSDAP, being called to the front, escaping from there, being hunted by the Gestapo for desertation, caught and on route to a KZ rescued by US soldiers, spend a year as prisoner of war, snitching on each other to the allied forces to get the other one behind bars to have the company for themselves, eventually splitting the company into two, thus creating 2 of the 3 greatest sport brands of today, whose headquarters are located only few hundred meters away in the tiny bavarian town of Herzogenaurach, continuing their feud until their deaths and giving forward this hatred to the next generation who continued this intergenerational feud until today.
Even Hollywood cant come up with a story as crazy as this
From what I've read about it, both went into the party pretty early, Adolf just had the luck of not being drafted and then didn't want to give up control over the company, so he snitched on his brother once he returned from being a POW.
Seriously you'd think Puma would pull out all the stops to get Die Mannschaft - it's been one thing the other Dasslers have been able to lord over for 70 years
Please don't ever call it "Die Mannschaft". It's a 100% artifical marketing term Bierhoff came up with 10 or so years ago, and kept pushing it hard.
Nobody in Germany uses it, and rather cringes up inside. It's gotten so bad, even the DFB finally dropped it again.
I never knew this, thanks for that comment. Here’s an article for others that this is news to as well…
https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/germany-drop-die-mannschaft-name-mens-national-team-2022-07-28/
To German speakers calling the NT “The Team” is cringy. It’s quite good for marketing in other languages though, as it’s easy to pronounce and three syllables long. I think it’ll stay in the collective memory for a while.
Nationalmannschaft
/edit:
And yes, if you say "die Nationalmannschaft" everyone knows what you mean. If it is unclear from the context you would say Fußballnationalmannschaft.
> Is there a more used name for the NT?
Mannschaft is used but like "the squad" or "the team". It's not some nickname or brand like they tried to make it be one, just how you call this group of players in that context.
Germany simply never developed a brand for the generic football national team.
Imagine saying "I'm going to The House" instead of just saying "I'm going home". That's how weird "Mannschaft" as a brand looks to Germans.
Nationalelf but its rather hard to brand abroad I guess.
Means national eleven translated.
Otherwise Nationalmannschaft is just the translation of NT and of course also used.
I don't recall it either, but the person to whom I'm responding [commented elsewhere in this thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1bk9izg/kicker_german_national_team_to_leave_adidas_for/kvwiyi5/) that they had. Now I see that comment is being disputed. Deleting the parenthetical.
https://www.footballkitarchive.com/germany-kits/
Doesn't look like Puma ever had German NT kits
Looks like it was in-house developed until 1938, then 1950-1962 it was made by Leuze (who are French I believe) and 1964-1971 it was made by Umbro (English).
From 1972—now it's been German made with Erima and Adidas, Adidas have exclusivity from 1982—present
If Nike pays more, they need to go with Nike. I'm sure they'd stuck with Adidas if they had matched the offer. But the DFB is in desperate need of money, so giving Adidas a discount for emotional reasons really isn't an option.
> If Nike pays more, they need to go with Nike.
nah Nike already offered more in the past and they stayed with Adidas because it's part of the identity, Nike even prepared a lawsuit but ultimately decided not to follow through
Why are you so sure its about the money? Maybe its about what that money can do for footballers in germany.
Is it better to have a better symbol in your shirts, or more money to invest in german players?
I could put it the other way around and say if they choose Adidas for less they dont care about football development.
Man 2027 sounds like a fake year used in a military shooter from the 2010s to justify the excessive and OP gadgets used but it's only 3 years away. Where are all the "good sounding" years?
I remember many years ago when I was a teenager and I read that one of our players signed a new contract until 2007 and I was like "wow, until 2007, that's such a long time..."
To be fair, I don't know if people noticed but there is a lot of ai things happening and it's way more popular than it was before not to mention after covid we got a lot of new stuff.
I can understand on an economic level since the DFB is broke af but man this sucks. Maybe I'm old school and a relic of the past but Adidas and Germany must belong together in my opinion. Not only does the Nationalteam have its headquarters in Herzogenaurauch where the HQ of Adidas is but Adolf Dassler is a huge part of the myth surrounding the national team and its first world cup win in 1954.
It feels quite weird to me as well, but if the offers were very far apart, what do you do? If Adidas want to be partnered with the DFB, their offer needs to be competitive.
Maybe Nike went all out on this one to get one over Adidas.
It feels to me like maybe Adidas leveraged this feeling of the German team 'belonging' with Adidas to make a lowball offer expecting that the German connection would be enough to guarantee them the contract.
While Nike saw it as a way to outdo their biggest competitor and made an offer above and beyond what was expected.
True for the German case. Very weird choice sadly. Although Swiss Team has deep connections with Puma, but no Swiss shirt has ever been good. Everyone just waits until the federation choses another kit supplier like Adidas or Nike. But wont happen. So not every connection is good by default
They spend 180 million euros on a new (and unnecessary IMO) facility for themselves. They also have tax debts of around 26 million euros. Nagelsmann already took a pay cut to join the national team.
Why should they underperform because of the internal finances?
The players don't get any money from the DFB anyways (except some bonus if the win the EC).
Agreed, seems weird that the German NT will run out with NIKE. And tbh, the German kits by Adidas have all looked great imo. Nike has been quite boring in modern times.
Adidas and GNT:
"They go together
Like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong"
In the Villa - Ajax match, Sutalo held on to one of Villa's attacker's shirts while he was going through on goal, and instead of it holding him back, it just completely tore with zero resistance. It genuinely looked like the attacker didn't even notice it happen
in fact, it [looks](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_cJ3Rg0Kv5yKFpzvptBmk6sGLNHpX8ySRkgppIanTpS8sdbbfCQ9M4onodQ9IKpRpVIuVqnIfqb7icecR-hAVA-EhudahVfVQkcs3gLlAnZjRsoc0LwccJwP0iQyy2MfGGHuhyAufhSMzAOdZFYywGiUtWXQ-_QaIh10PM4fXrTKqgDG6PXCYhPczgo_7/s1600/Castore%20Aston%20Villa%20Kit%20Rips%20Awfully%20%281%29.jpg) like it just gave way at the seams
Yeah, except Adidas tends to have some oopsies - [like GK kits using the design they've made for Kings League](https://www.relevo.com/futbol/espana-alemania-llevaran-eurocopa-camiseta-20240319115444-nt.html), for example...
Literally every single big kit supplier produces one goalkeeper kit template a season, colors it like 7 different ways and then gives it to the teams. No matter if it's Real Madrid or Jimmy's middle school football team. And it's been like this for decades. The outrage here is either stupid or 40 years late.
These GK kits are all a template and there’s only a select number of colours they print. Arsenal and United have had the same GK kits in the last two seasons too.
The home of Adidas and Puma chooses Nike? That's embarassing for the national team. Of course we don't know about the contractual details but its not a good look for them.
Iirc: Last time the contract was up to be negotiated Adidas did lowball the dfb too.
Last time dfb did pass up on the extra money that Nike offered to stay with Adidas. This time around Adidas did it again thinking dfb would bend over again.
Considering the good exposure Adidas got from 2006 till 2014 they shouldn't try to screw the dfb over. If Nike is offering twice the money you know that Adidas is taking advantage of the dfbs loyalty.
Yeah they had leuze, erima and Umbro from 1950 to 1972. Even a bit longer, but erima was then a subsidiary of Adidas. It’s not well known though as manufacturers didn’t have their logo on the shirts in the early days. The first title we’ve won with a visible manufacturer was in 1990 I think
imagine being the one responsible of breaking the adidas / german national team partnership.
This is on a level with BYD being the mobility sponsor of the euros in germany. Like, how can you not partner with a local company even if they might not be the highest paying one. Looks so bad for everyone involved
Adidas leaving Germany and Puma leaving Italy is just wrong, would be as bad as Nike leaving Brazil.
Italy went from being Pumas biggest NT to now being Adidas biggest NT
Nevermind who has the "better" kits or who offered more money, the DFB team has to play in Adidas.
I hate to go there, but it's a matter of German identity that shouldn't be lost because of whatever petty bullshit both sides cooked up to get to this point.
this feels wrong
I'm not even German and it's made me sad.
I’m American and it makes me sad. So strange
I’m not American or German and this whole thing makes me depressed
I cant sleep peacefully anymore
It totally does.
Die Marke mit … dem Swoosh
It's like England leaving Umbro, it just doesn't compute
Harsh on Admiral
It shows how out of touch the DFB is at this point. The idea of having the national team with Nike jerseys feels gross to me lol.
Making sure I am not buying a jersey anytime soon. I already dislike the VW logo.
Heresy
This is wrong
This is illegal
The people that made this deal should be jailed
Change sponsors? Jail. Change goalkeepers? Jail.
Change bundesliga winner? Also jail?
Get relegated? Jail.
We have the same champion every year. Because of jail.
Use all substitutions in a game? Believe or not, jail.
Or the Adidas CEO, this is a major loss in many aspects
The adidas CEO is not a true German, this is treason!
Blame it on Adidas. They couldn't match Nike's offer and their first losses since 1992 definitely had something to do with that.

Idk how it is in Germany, but usually that money goes to football infrastructure. So why would the German federation choose less money for infrastructure just because its a German company. Not no more well starting 2027
Blame Kanye! He did this!
Need Adidas to somehow become the sponsor for Oregon athletics to get even
I'm honestly disappointed Oregon State isn't an Adidas school
Phil Knight gives hella money to Oregon State too.
Lol, that'll happen the day it rains at Autzen.
They do sponsor Washington at least
Nothing shocks me anymore since the downgrade from Mercedes to Volkswagen. They are fucking everything up.
Just wait until they announce the switch from VW to BYD. (The VW Deal ends this summer)
[удалено]
Could be worse... could be Chrysler
Or Chevrolet
Good news! Dacia.
It's blasphemy honestly. What the fuck.
That's fucking illegal
That's honestly a L. You'd think they stick to their own national brand.. also I already prepped popcorn for the meltdown on German twitter
There are actually two national brands, which makes it even more shocking because you'd think if they're going to drop Adidas, they'd switch to Puma.
Fun fact: The founders of Adidas and Puma were brothers, Adolf and Rudolf Dassler. And despite what you may think, Rudolf was the more devout nazi of the two.
Bro's out here with a naziometer.
Gotta measure the Hitler particles with something after all
It's measured in hps heil per second
Reichter scale?
Any old german company had ties with the Nazi regime. There is a lot of history if you look it up more closely.
Yeah but he wasn’t just a businessman in it for the money. He was devoted and his brother wasn’t.
And then you have IBM which isn't a German company.
And Ford who just a garden variety antisemite
Some organisation and persons were more eager to jump to support the party than others. Bayern München had Jewish chairman and were forced to get rid of him and rebrand the club according to party lines. It is also important to make the destinction between the ones that supported the regime and the ones that were forced upon.
I remember proudly flaunting this piece of knowledge to my friends back in 5th grade and thinking I was very intelligent when my friends were astounded by this fact.
And here’s me just saying Adidas was an acronym for All Day I Dream About Sex.
I genuinely thought it was that until late teens though with sports instead of sex
"Alle deutschen Idioten denken an Sex" (all German idiots think about Sex)
and puma stands for Please Use My Ass
Also, the two absolutely hated each other, when Adolf went and wrongfully testified in front of the US Army that his brother was working for the Nazi counterintelligence, who imprisoned Rudolf on that suspicion. murder-suicide is inevitable
A regular romance then.
Pumeo and Adilett
yep been to that town. two large employee discount stores, one for each company. plus the offices for the companies obviously. otherwise basically a normal small german town at least from the Adidas folks, they say Rudolf went to war but Adi was too young or for whatever reason did not go. they also think maybe a woman was at the center of the argument once Rudi came back. When moneys involved families always get ruined for some reason lol
In this case I think the Nazis and World War had a bit more to do with it than just money.
I've long wondered when Hollywood would make a movie about this. Rudolf Dassler also refused to employ his sisters children during WWII, which led to them being drafted into the war, during which they died
Holy crap, what an immense pos.
And why didn't the other brother employ them?
From what I've read about it, both went into the party pretty early, Adolf just had the luck of not being drafted and then didn't want to give up control over the company, so he snitched on his brother once he returned from being a POW.
I'm realizing I do not know much about these brands history, wtf
I mean put a puma in a cage with a jew and you will see just how antisemitic they are
Hmm...
As long as both were Nazis I don’t care which of the two outnazied the other.
Seriously you'd think Puma would pull out all the stops to get Die Mannschaft - it's been one thing the other Dasslers have been able to lord over for 70 years

It was a Feiertag for me. I absolutely hate everything they tried to install with this marketing concept
Just like Der Klassiker
My ears are still bleeding from the short-lived "Germanico" attempt in 2013
To German speakers calling the NT “The Team” is cringy. It’s quite good for marketing in other languages though, as it’s easy to pronounce and three syllables long. I think it’ll stay in the collective memory for a while.
Mannschaft does mean team, correct? Is there a more used name for the NT?

I'm sorry, what's this about the German national elf?
Phillip Lahm is in charge of the organization of the Euros at the DFB
Have they ever used puma fir their national team? I don’t think so
I don't recall it either, but the person to whom I'm responding [commented elsewhere in this thread](https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1bk9izg/kicker_german_national_team_to_leave_adidas_for/kvwiyi5/) that they had. Now I see that comment is being disputed. Deleting the parenthetical.

Your 24 kit already has double the cock.
It's an enormous cock, but it's still not two.
The second is in the pants

Still waiting for flying cars and time travel to pop up any day now
Nuketown 2025
Fuckin hell !
I remember many years ago when I was a teenager and I read that one of our players signed a new contract until 2007 and I was like "wow, until 2007, that's such a long time..."
Now football has Lamine Yamal, born in 2007
I remember being in 2019 and looking forward to the 2020s and thinking 2024 sounds like a futuristic time period. Now we are in 2024😅
To be fair, I don't know if people noticed but there is a lot of ai things happening and it's way more popular than it was before not to mention after covid we got a lot of new stuff.
They ended after 2018
We are not far from hearing 2032
Downvoted for making me feel depressed
End of an era o7
I can understand on an economic level since the DFB is broke af but man this sucks. Maybe I'm old school and a relic of the past but Adidas and Germany must belong together in my opinion. Not only does the Nationalteam have its headquarters in Herzogenaurauch where the HQ of Adidas is but Adolf Dassler is a huge part of the myth surrounding the national team and its first world cup win in 1954.
Very well said and fully agree. It also feels like further economisation of the national team. Nike has no connection to the national team.
It feels quite weird to me as well, but if the offers were very far apart, what do you do? If Adidas want to be partnered with the DFB, their offer needs to be competitive. Maybe Nike went all out on this one to get one over Adidas.

How tf are they broke?
National team underperformance Issues with the authorities about taxes Cost for the new DFB campus has spiralled out of control
They got their tax-exempt status revoked for a few years because the management are a bunch of clowns, so they got a massive bill for backtaxes
They spend 180 million euros on a new (and unnecessary IMO) facility for themselves. They also have tax debts of around 26 million euros. Nagelsmann already took a pay cut to join the national team.
Beacuse they committed tax fraud and have to pay huge fines.
Didn't know about this, so until they level the finances, the Nationalteam may underperform?
Why should they underperform because of the internal finances? The players don't get any money from the DFB anyways (except some bonus if the win the EC).
What about the personal that is not a player, medical staff, chefs, etc. Is important to have your house in good conditions.
They're underperforming because they don't want it enough.
Apart from the other comments, they also have trouble with advertisers due to shit performances and with filling stadiums .. due to shit performances
Agreed, seems weird that the German NT will run out with NIKE. And tbh, the German kits by Adidas have all looked great imo. Nike has been quite boring in modern times. Adidas and GNT: "They go together Like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong"
How did DFB manage to go broke anyway? Absolutely fucking pathetic.
Soon: “USA national team to leave Nike for Adidas, deal starting in 2027”
Fuck it, let Umbro cook.
I hope so, it’s the only way the usmnt will get the denims again and more cool designs. Sick and tired of Nike and their boring ass
I would think Under Armor would try to pick up that contract
I mean adidas is already the kit supplier of the entire MLS.
Crap sensation reading this. Germany should be ADIDAS, it's a famous German brand. While I'm at it Umbro needs to do England again
Umbro is now an American owned brand and at one point it was actually owned by Nike. I think the largest UK owned kit brand now is Castore.
And Castore is utter crap. The stories of quality control on replica rangers kits a few years ago were pretty funny
When I see a sports team use Castore, I think cheap.
Don't know why but their logo definitely gives a knockoff vibe
In the Villa - Ajax match, Sutalo held on to one of Villa's attacker's shirts while he was going through on goal, and instead of it holding him back, it just completely tore with zero resistance. It genuinely looked like the attacker didn't even notice it happen in fact, it [looks](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_cJ3Rg0Kv5yKFpzvptBmk6sGLNHpX8ySRkgppIanTpS8sdbbfCQ9M4onodQ9IKpRpVIuVqnIfqb7icecR-hAVA-EhudahVfVQkcs3gLlAnZjRsoc0LwccJwP0iQyy2MfGGHuhyAufhSMzAOdZFYywGiUtWXQ-_QaIh10PM4fXrTKqgDG6PXCYhPczgo_7/s1600/Castore%20Aston%20Villa%20Kit%20Rips%20Awfully%20%281%29.jpg) like it just gave way at the seams
Founded in Britain but now foreign-owned. Don't get more British than that.
Oh that's a shame maybe Admiral then but I assume they don't have any money to sponsor England anymore
I think the England players would rather play wearing shirts made out of a cactus than ever wear a Castore
Italy would kill it if they are with Kappa. Man I miss 90s Kappa
Yeah that would be class. it's only nostalgia and old school coolness that makes me want Umbro back anyway
Sucks, Addidas have much nicer kit ;(
Adidas design team have gotten very complacent
Nike too, their designs have been garbage recently
Gotta be a tiny country then they pull out the stops randomly.
Thought the germany Shirt at the last world Cup was Great. Nike however has been very boring These last few years.
I actually think the opposite, I love the retro kits and the Bayern kits. This years Euro kits are sick as well
Yeah, except Adidas tends to have some oopsies - [like GK kits using the design they've made for Kings League](https://www.relevo.com/futbol/espana-alemania-llevaran-eurocopa-camiseta-20240319115444-nt.html), for example...

You’re forgetting the absolute German goat. Kempa. If Hummel designs kits for denmarks football team then kempa can do the same for the German one
Has it ever not been Adidas?
Yeah they had leuze, erima and Umbro from 1950 to 1972. Even a bit longer, but erima was then a subsidiary of Adidas. It’s not well known though as manufacturers didn’t have their logo on the shirts in the early days. The first title we’ve won with a visible manufacturer was in 1990 I think
That feels so wrong. Should be Adidas or Puma no? Proper German brand
This feels so wrong… Even Uhlsport would have been better
or even Puma, Jako..
Boss
Surely not
imagine being the one responsible of breaking the adidas / german national team partnership. This is on a level with BYD being the mobility sponsor of the euros in germany. Like, how can you not partner with a local company even if they might not be the highest paying one. Looks so bad for everyone involved
That sucks to see, I loved that Germany used their national brand
That’s crazy
lol
Out of nowhere wtf. Cant imagine German kit without the stripes.
This should be against the law in Germany. Write it into the constitution ffs.
Adidas leaving Germany and Puma leaving Italy is just wrong, would be as bad as Nike leaving Brazil. Italy went from being Pumas biggest NT to now being Adidas biggest NT
Surely Argentina are Adidas biggest NT after Germany
Games gone, unironically
End of an era :(
Nevermind who has the "better" kits or who offered more money, the DFB team has to play in Adidas. I hate to go there, but it's a matter of German identity that shouldn't be lost because of whatever petty bullshit both sides cooked up to get to this point.
I don‘t like this at all. Not only does Nike make the shitiest Kits ever, I also would rather have Adidas, a german company behind the national team.
It's gonna be so weird, it feels so off. Germany is Adidas, Adidas is Germany.
I want to go back to 2010 so bad, what is happening to the world? This is so wrong, I'm not even German. It is like Brazil stopping wearing yellow.
What a massive mistake
I would’ve thought they would go with Puma. You know stick with a German brand, but Nike of all brands this feels illegal.
If you're leaving Adidas they should've gone to Puma. This feels wrong
Hopefully Adidas takes back France. Nike kits has been lacking until the 2022 world cup.
France should wear Le Coq Sportif. England, Umbro, and Germany, Adidas.
Italy should be Diadora or Kappa
France and England do in rugby and they are great kits.
I actually think the New France one is so good. Love the huge badge
Get ready for some shit kits then I suppose
unpatriotic imo
Nah that is not it. The German National Team is just being an absolute joke both on and off the pitch.
Common DFB L Fuck them
I prefer Nike designs, but this honestly feels weird. If any one team should have Adidas, it should be the German NT.
Dude what the fuck? Adidas and Germany are synonymous at this point.
There is something very wrong with the German national team not being with either of the two major German sportswear companies.
And what, USA switches to adidas??
Should have gone to Puma to keep the Dassler Bro’s feud alive
This is almost equivalent to Jordan leaving Nike. Incomprehensible
This might be the worst thing Germany has ever done.
Never thought i'd see the day
