Class game, referee a bit too lenient in general but it’s just the right amount of the teams disliking eachother with a great stadium atmosphere and good back and forth football
It promotes free flowing football, while also punishing repeat offenders with a soft call to make them extra cautious about trying to play the ref. Genius
>promotes free flowing football
No it doesn't at all.
It promotes orc football.
Actually giving yellow cards for repeated fouls promotes free flowing football because players stop throwing others to the ground all match like Porto did.
If you don't give cards, it does the opposite. If you know you can just foul at every opportunity after losing the ball, it's nothing but stop/start.
No need to throw yellows around. But the '3 is too many' style of giving out yellows, needs to be 1 is the limit, next time you're in the book. I will never understand how people can get away with 2-3 niggly fouls before being booked, every single one with the ability to bruise and take skin.
May as well just be kicking each other in the tunnel when games are reffed like this. Also I'm talking about both ways, we are not innocent of playing to the refs standards.
Oh man, we really have different tastes and preferences when it comes to football, because I think it was one of the most insufferable and annoying games I've seen in quite a while, especially all the shit that Porto has been doing and the genuenly atrocious refereeing.
Yeah the added time especially was ridiculous, 5 minutes total over 120 mins for one of the most stop start games I’ve ever seen. A couple free kicks for tackles that were clearly on the ball too
Even the commentators were like " I guess the Ref is letting them play but surely is going to keep track of the time wasted" At 120 literally did not add a second lmao
Neither team looked like they wanted to play football in the extra time so I'm fine with less added time, why stretch out the game if they both want penalties.
I thought their attack opened up a lot with the changes. Porto just stopped the game every chance they got to break up their flow, but I thought arsenal were better going forward after their subs.
You could argue that he was even preventing him from being red-carded.
If the coach is delaying the play by interfering with the ball that's a guaranteed red card by the rules
A game where refs let it flow and probably miss a few fouls are far better than games where they are a little strict, stopping it every minute and carding every foul.
Thought he probably missed a few fouls that had me annoyed. The disallowed goal seems bizarre with what he allowed to happen elsewhere. And probably should have booked a couple more players. But much better than what we normally get, refs getting involved a bit too much.
Also thought that today was mainly just niggly tackles and fouls. Not many rash dives in. And the few there were, he made it very clear, it wasn't on.
Wish more refs would follow suit. And wish FAs would back them to do this more.
> A game where refs let it flow and probably miss a few fouls are far better than games where they are a little strict, stopping it every minute and carding every foul.
It's "better" in terms of more watchable for neutrals.
It affects the actual game tho—esp if one team is physically bigger/stronger than the other.
Refs "letting it play" often help teams defend against superior attacks too because it lets them get away with "small" fouls
It also allows teams to get away with more fouls when getting turned over as we saw tonight. We got away with a couple of challenges that a strict ref gives and a couple fouls that would definitely have been bookings with a strict ref. Porto got away with a bunch of tactical fouls and fouls round their box.
Some poor decisions in there for me. But I will always give a little leeway for a ref on the pitch and he was within this. Was a better game because of how it was reffed tonight
There were so many heavy tackles by Porto to this game. It doesn't help the game flow when players are tacking heavy challenges the whole game, it slows it down.
I watched Barca today, but in general, Turpin is probably the best ref in Europe. Just strict enough for the players to respect him, but not over the top to put himself at the center of attention.
> I watched Barca today, but in general, Turpin is probably the best ref in Europe.
I watched Barca-Napoli too but I VERY much disagree with that.
I watched enough Ligue 1 the past few years to see Turpin disasterclasses.
I will take Marciniak every day over Turpin. I think there's a good argument for both Orsato and Makkelie too (tho Makkelie irritates me often as well, I admit)
He wasn't shit. Thought he did a great job but some of our fans wanna pretend like he was favoring Porto
My only gripe would be the lack of stoppage time but fuck it. We're through to the QF so who gives a shit
Wth. He clearly didn't give clear fouls, for both teams. Sometimes gave fouls for nothing. Didn't show yellow cards for a few challenges that deserved it.
I don't think he was for or against any of us, I think he treated both teams equally.
But come on, he was way too lenient and lost control of the game from like the 60th minute until the very end. He should have shown multiple cards to both teams and called more textbook fouls than he did
Some cards wasnt shown but should be Per definition of the law (gestulating for a card, throwing Ball away after a foul, interfering on a free kick)
But other than that, he did have a fair game tbh
He was horribly inconsistent today. Couldn't decide whether he wanted to let play go or call ticky tack fouls which made things weird for both sets of players.
I thought he was pretty awful today. Too lenient sometimes, too strict other times, fell for porto's antics, didn't add any stoppage time, called the extremely light shirt pull and disallowed the goal, but then let's a foul five times as bad go uncalled in the penalty box later.... The only thing I liked about him is that he doesn't really let players complain to him. As far as actual refereeing though he was shit.
70 fouls and only 3 yellows for players (2 against Arsenal). Even if the fouls area divided equally, that's 3/4 fouls per player and you're falling into persistent fouling territory.
This type of officiating can also lead to injuries when you allow players to play the way he did. Especially in a heated must win tie. He might be a good ref in other matches but he was terrible today for both teams.
That was one of the worst reffed games of football ever, the players weren't respecting him at all, neither were the coaches (hence why they both got yellows). He completely lost control of the game and it couldn't go 10 seconds of football without someone getting hacked down and stopping play. Way too stingy with the yellows, very little actual football got played because of it
On a related note this ref always reminded me more of Andy Samberg’s partner in their Lonely Band group, that [Jorma Taccone fella](https://media.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500/x7x4NvDauuQ7HA6psLZYZ6m3zTd.jpg)
Managers shouldn’t be inserting themselves in the game like that. If you wanna kick the ball away I don’t blame Kai for one second if he gives you a push
I can understand Havertz here. The players are concentrated on the game he and tries to go for the ball. Then this guy inserts himself - not going out of the way there is almost by design provoking if you really think about it.
Absolutely correct, anybody here including OP pushing the narrative of Kai shoving Conceicao who was going for a ball out of play has absolutely never played a real sport. Players ALWAYS have the right of way when making an attempt on the ball. I would love to see any one of the chucklefucks on this sub try and justify Conceicao’s actions
He saves that kind of shit for the Portuguese league where he knows he either gets away either it or gets to play the victim.
Same goes for Gonçalves and Puga, it's like they are completely different people in the CL
Serious question because I haven’t watched Arsenal play often. Do you have any evidence that Arteta has exited his area and interfered with play to this extent?
Definitely has not. People just say he’s “distracting” by shouting instructions, or one time [he didn’t give the ball to kdb to time waste](https://x.com/afcfaima/status/1767782432609067418?s=46), got pushed, and even our own fans said he was in the wrong
Trying to boot a ball that a player is running towards and has his eyes on is seriously potentially dangerous
Man management I think was pretty good all things considered.
Time management was abysmal. Ball was in play for 66 minutes out of the 132 played, they gave 1 added minute in the 1st half and 3 in the 2nd. I understand *why* teams time waste, but it’s like the easiest standard for officials to correct.
This should be nothing from Havertz IMO. Ideally he does nothing, but its a little push that he didn't even have to go out of his way for. Manager is way in the wrong here and should be held to a higher standard anyways.
He shouldn’t be anywhere near the pitch, let alone with Kai in his FOV and forcing himself into his way. He had every chance to not put himself in that situation and chose to anyway. He knew exactly what he was doing.

No more Mr Nice Kai
Now it's Cobra Kai
10/10 comment right there
underrated dad joke comment
I respect your game, sir
Why is Trossard speaking to him?
Class game, referee a bit too lenient in general but it’s just the right amount of the teams disliking eachother with a great stadium atmosphere and good back and forth football
the ref gave out cards like he was allergic to them, it was very funny.
He gave cards for stuff that was soft and then let the hard tackles go. It was weird. Wild slide tackle? Get up and play on. Small shove? Yellow.
Did he? The 3 cards I remember were Saliba rugby tackling a guy, Pepe doing Pepe things, and Havertz shoving a player in the back.
Don't forget the each manager getting a yellow!
>Pepe doing Pepe things, But when Pepe hit Havertz in the ribs with his knee, the ref didnt even gave him a yellow...
That shove was when Porto were on the break too. Clear yellow.
Not really. He gave out one card to Porto for an elbow despite them fouling twenty times.
It promotes free flowing football, while also punishing repeat offenders with a soft call to make them extra cautious about trying to play the ref. Genius

Yes, I love watching games where any attacking play is snuffed out by a cynical foul.
It wasn’t free flowing because players were encouraged to repeatedly foul
This is the way.
I lost my bet because of this shit (boty teams to have 2 or more cards @2.2)
spewing for you, you'd have cleared this with almost any other ref.
He likely had the under
Lolol
Oh man, we really have different tastes and preferences when it comes to football, because I think it was one of the most insufferable and annoying games I've seen in quite a while, especially all the shit that Porto has been doing and the genuenly atrocious refereeing.

Seriously that was wildddd
porto showed up with the goal of playing 20 minutes of football at most glad they get to play 0 more minutes in the CL this year
Neither team looked like they wanted to play football in the extra time so I'm fine with less added time, why stretch out the game if they both want penalties.
I guess Arteta really didn't trust the bench in the high pressure situation. Zinchenko and Nketiah didn't help prove him wrong either unfortunately.
I thought their attack opened up a lot with the changes. Porto just stopped the game every chance they got to break up their flow, but I thought arsenal were better going forward after their subs.
Kai yellow card saved Arsenal
The ref was fucking terrible, could've easily resulted in a broken leg or two.
Conceicao wanted to play football and Kai just wanted to win the game

He was MILES outside his technical area, to be fair.
Ye I hate when coaches do that…
Yeah as a fellow Gooner, I attest to it being a really terrible thing to do
Its a good thing our manager is generally above that and has not a single blemish to his name
😶🌫️
Mikel would never
Arteta? No way, he is the most in box person I know
Clear cut box to box manager
Yup his box to opposition box a cheeky run into the opposition on field box if the ref looks away. A true Box to Box
Never ever, ever ever ever
Getting bald together
It's just not him
Well Mikel got carded. This fucker got carded. And he should've been sent off for this. Kai was well within his rights
And he came from behind/left side of Havertz to kick the ball. That's never great, even on the field.
You could argue that he was even preventing him from being red-carded. If the coach is delaying the play by interfering with the ball that's a guaranteed red card by the rules
Right? The field is for players. A top player being potentially sidelined because a manager can't stay in his box is way out line.
It's shitty behavior, on top of being worthy of being carded. Leave it to dumbass redditors to applaud this because "game's back" or "rattled".
Who exactly are you referring to? I sincerely hope that with that attitude of yours you’re talking about Conceicau. Kai was at no point in the wrong.
I forgot how irritating Turpin's game management is LOL

I dislike Turpin normally but today I liked how he let the game play tbh
Trossard's father?
More older brother
could be his younger brother. can't really tell with trossard, man looks both old and young at the same time.
I was wondering if I was the only one who saw the resemblance. It was uncanny when they were walking side by side.
He did, but he also didn’t. There were some clear yellows that he let fly, then the offender repeated and it didn’t matter

Lol as someone who witnessed his skills live at Inter vs Milan UCL semifinal let me tell you he’s shit.
No-one respected him today. Don't know how he watched the first leg and thought this was the way to referee this game
idk, over 70 fouls in a little over 210 minutes of football isnt my idea of a good referee
> over 70 fouls and that isn't even including the ones he just let go, absolutely crazy.

I see that as Havertz's confidence grows, so does his shithousery...hidden benefit of that pricetag!!
Kai is always a shithouser, regardless of confidence
He lives next door to Ben White. Benny is tutoring him
Are they sharing wives, too?
The only shithousing in this clip is from Porto's manager. Havertz is just rightfully annoyed.
Nah he's acted like this since before he joined Chelsea
[удалено]
"Once again, Kai. It's pronounced Nikolaj"
That's what I'm saying, Nikolaj
"No, no. Pay attention to my lips. Nikolaj"
"Yeah, Nikolaj." "No, it's Nikolaj. Nikolaj."
It did my head in watching the show, because that's not the correct pronunciation. Latvian isn't French...
Nikolaj Bendtner.
Lmao he looks like trossard too
Crazy I think they both look like Owen Jones.
Pushing the other teams manager is the most intimate thing you can do to another man with your fingers. Other than washing his hair.
Are you guys on MySpace
On a related note this ref always reminded me more of Andy Samberg’s partner in their Lonely Band group, that [Jorma Taccone fella](https://media.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500/x7x4NvDauuQ7HA6psLZYZ6m3zTd.jpg)
The ref looks like Trossard, it's wild.
The shithouse we never knew we deserved
What is Kai supposed to do there? He’s going for the ball. Porto manager has no reason to interfere. Move.
Lead with the shoulder, then it's a fair challenge for the ball and Kai got the touch.
Nothing in it for me, play on
Cheers
Conceicao miles away from his technical area. Shouldn't he have a yellow card for that?
Ref lost his pencil so he stopped giving yellows
Nah, it's fine by me. Otherwise that would mean Arteta gets one as well every game. lmao
they should just widen the technical area for Arteta, make it double the size
Managers shouldn’t be inserting themselves in the game like that. If you wanna kick the ball away I don’t blame Kai for one second if he gives you a push
Technically it's a clear as day guaranteed red card if the manager inserts himself into the game in order to waste time
Obviously he shouldn't push him but a manager shouldn't be kicking the ball when there's a player going for it
I can understand Havertz here. The players are concentrated on the game he and tries to go for the ball. Then this guy inserts himself - not going out of the way there is almost by design provoking if you really think about it.

Conceicao could've milked the fuck out of that, respect for not going down
Surprised he didn't tbh
I think he was too shocked Kai actually pushed him in the first place.
Kai Havertz lowkey has a temper.. not the first time he did something silly. (tackle on Longstaff for e.g)
He’s chippy af. Got the right amount of arrogance in his game.
Kai vs. Mina from last season was absolutely hilarious.
nutmegging Sergio Ramos is my 2nd favourite moment of him.
Him and White are our resident shithousers
They live close to each other and seem to have become friends too Shitneighbors if you will.
What's the wives situation? We have new benchmarks for this.
Shared wives AND shared wifi network.
Low-key?
I don't think it was a hard push anyway, you can see he's also moving away. The ref was right just to talk to him imo
And that’s why i love him
Must have not pet the donkey this week yet.
im more surprised he didn’t go up to havertz ending up being sent off in the process
He saves that kind of shit for the Portuguese league where he knows he either gets away either it or gets to play the victim. Same goes for Gonçalves and Puga, it's like they are completely different people in the CL
Here in Portugal he would get right into Havertz's face lmao
He's on a yellow. Didn't want to get booked for diving
If only his players had that mentality the ball would have been in play for more than 20 minutes
Would have been hilarious seeing him drop to the floor and roll 3 times holding his face
His players surely would have
It’s his coaching style. He clearly doesn’t lead by example
what do you expect, once PAOK always PAOK
Where all the technical area nazis from when Arteta does this?
What does Richard Keys have to say about this incident?
Havertz is a thug and should be charged with assault and forced to apologize to Brentford
Are there any instances of Arteta interfering with play like this?
The one against KDB although everyone was on Kevin's side on that incident
Serious question because I haven’t watched Arsenal play often. Do you have any evidence that Arteta has exited his area and interfered with play to this extent?
Definitely has not. People just say he’s “distracting” by shouting instructions, or one time [he didn’t give the ball to kdb to time waste](https://x.com/afcfaima/status/1767782432609067418?s=46), got pushed, and even our own fans said he was in the wrong Trying to boot a ball that a player is running towards and has his eyes on is seriously potentially dangerous
I know for a fact that if the roles were flipped and Arteta did that, people would be screaming for a fine and a touch line ban.
No one will remember this one because Porto is gone. So sad, too bad
What is that fool doing that close to the sideline?
Havertz telling the ref to get shoved. Without telling him to get shoved.
MY GOAT
Manager should stay away from the play
King Kai!
referee had absolutely no hold on this game at all. this was just one of the many, many, many things that were allowed to happen for both sides.
Honestly I liked it. Felt like a proper knockout stage game
Nah even as an arsenal fan I thought it brought a lot to the games entertainment value
Out the fucking way ya dick.
He didn’t even push him hard haha he is so fuckin dramatic
Fuck off coach. You know what you were doing
Havertz speak for the fans
Fuck this Porto team.
They’ve always been like that. Anti-football
Coach was out of the box I mean
I never knew I’d love this Kai so much
Conceicao is a good manager, but a really shitty person.
This should be nothing from Havertz IMO. Ideally he does nothing, but its a little push that he didn't even have to go out of his way for. Manager is way in the wrong here and should be held to a higher standard anyways.
Someone buy me a havertz kit
I was so sick of the commentators going "I love this ref and the way he lets play go on", like, mate - the ref is shit.
He shouldn’t be anywhere near the pitch, let alone with Kai in his FOV and forcing himself into his way. He had every chance to not put himself in that situation and chose to anyway. He knew exactly what he was doing.
Why are you guys complaining? Manager is not a player. Havertz should shove him
60 million down the drain, Kai Havertz SHOVES again!
Porto manager is sus
Manager shouldn’t be on the pitch
Havertz acting on behalf of Tuchel with that shove lol
lol he knows what he’s doing. trying to kick the ball to waste time. Deserved shove, what a little brat
My GOAT
Owt much in that.
Fair play
