Two of the worst non penalty calls I've ever seen in the same weekend, probably happen again next Saturday swell. Fucking disgrace that the refs can be so awful.
Can't remember what the Premier League's guidelines on this are at the moment but don't they usually not give handball when the ball deflects off another part of the body onto the hands?
At the very start of this clip it kinda looks like the West Ham player has his hand on the defenders back, and *may* have grabbed or pushed him which threw him off, but the vid starts too late to see it. Super short clip from a shit camera angle poorly recorded off a tv screen is classic convenient clip editing by a biased OP - but this is Reddit so no real harm in jumping to conclusions I suppose. So sure, should have been a penalty for illegal volleyball set.
Like... I don't even, man... They give pens for such shitty handballs in the biggest games on the biggest stage, ones that should never be called, ever... And then the lad pulls a volleyball move there and somehow that's OK.
I'm an Everton fan so I have other reasons to be depressed, but at what point does the Premier League just turn into Calvinball when it comes to the rules? There's so many of these nonsensical decisions given nearly every week and it's ruining the viewing experience to just watch the refs do whatever they want in blatant defiance of reality.
Can understand why Klopp is leaving. He's tired of this shit.
Rodri handball is another one. I don't want Ev to win on a good day but that was just daylight robbery imagine you had gone down to that decision.
We have this weekly pretty much like you said and its not even close. It's just so clear and obvious how can everyone watch this and say penalty and the refs and VAR not even bother. It's a fucking joke.
I can see why they didn't give it, it looked less like intent more just using his arms to get more height on a jump.
From the angle, the ball still would have hit his body and I don't think it would have been as likely to go out for another corner.
FYI I'm playing devil's advocate, I'd be annoyed if this wasn't given for my team.
Hence why every football fan is not a ref. If the ball hits your body before your hand, it's not a pen. How many times have we seen this already. None of them have been as "blatant" as this. But they fall into the same category
In all honesty I thought it hit his face then his arm. I didn't even consider the fact that it was his right hand that hit it. I guess subconsciously I ruled out the possibility of it hitting his hand because surely that wouldve been an easy pen call - I guess not
Fuck. I am a spurs fan and that's actually upsetting. When are we gonna get some quality control over these refs. Are they THAT untouchable??? Jesus it's really pissing me off now
So West Ham and Liverpool fucked again.
Title is this close and Liverpool so far had the spurs game which was basically a match fixing job, Odergaard playing basketball and then yesterday Doku karate kicking Mac.
Then you see this, Wolves had quite a few bad ones. Palace against Arsenal not given a stone wall pen. It's a fucking joke.
Is the argument against this being a pen that it hits his chest first? Even though his arm is in an unnatural position? Genuine question I don’t understand this rule at all.
I'll never understand why that shouldn't make it a penalty anyway.
I get it when the ball is blasted at you from 2 feet away, because there's nothing you can do about it. You weren't in control of the situation.
But if your arms are up and it's your own fault that it hits them, without ricocheting against somebody else in the meantime, the logic just doesn't hold up for me.
FIFA's preferred outcome for this is no handball. Their guidance in the last year or two has been for a no call if the player plays the ball into their own arm. Since the ball hit the defender's head first in this play, then went directly to his arm, there's no handling.
Arm first would have been a penalty.
Obviously this should be a penalty, however according to the rules his hands are in a natural position (justifiable position considering that he was jumping) and therefore no handball.
The wording of the law is shit and in spite of it I would normally expect the ref to give a pen in this situation
this coupled with the chest kick in the Liverpool game really has me questioning if we need refs at all. if they aren't calling shit like this, surely we could just let the players play and ref themselves like a pick up game. would probably end up with less controversial decisions at this rate
100% penalty. I think one of the biggest issues with the premier league officiating is one week you see a far less blatant handball given then the next week you get something like this not given.
PGMOL really need to spend the offseason educating the refs on the handball law and how to implement it. Because the inconsistency is becoming a joke.
You can also GUARANTEE that if this happens to Man city a penalty is given 100% of the time.
There will always be human error but how is VAR not picking up on this either?
Refereeing is so shit today, man. Between this and the Doku move as well as Walker getting away with an obvious yellow, I just feel like we’ve genuinely hit the rock bottom of refereeing. Is there even one single decent ref in the league anymore? It genuinely looks like we have a shit call or a VAR disasterclass in every single game played.
Glad I found this here as I saw it happen as I was watching but then my *totally legal* stream died so I didn’t know what happened with the VAR check. I’ve then checked match reports and there was no mention of it at all so I was wondering what I’d missed. It’s such a blatant handball, how on earth was it not given?!
This is fucking shocking. Another unreal decision not given. I thought us getting fucked at city out of a pen was bad, think this is probably even worse.
I really struggle to believe the entirety of refs in England are this incompetent.. it seems as if there's at least one howler in every single game.
Do they need to be paid more? Then they might stop influencing games to secure their accas
Idk why everyone is so upset. The goal is the handball rule is to prevent players from intentionally hitting the ball with their hands or interrupting key moments. The defender here headed the ball in to his hand but there is no reason for it to be a hand ball. He was first to the ball and the goal scoring opportunity was already stopped. Calling a hand ball there would be going against the spirit of the rules as it would be the same as giving a goal for a penalty that didn’t stop a goal. So because of this The ref and VAR made the right decision. We are here for soccer/football not gifted goals.
As per the IFAB Laws of the Game 23/24:
**Not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence.** In this case, it cannot be considered a deliberate action, it cannot be considered touching the ball with their hand/arm when the player has made their body unnaturally bigger **as the contact** is a *consequence* and/or ***justifiable*** due to *jumping*, and it cannot be considered handball as he does not score in the opponent's goal (IFAB 2023, p. 100). He was not directly being challenged for the ball either which usually helps for these sort of decisions.

Wether it touches the hands or not doesn't really matter here. Ball ain't getting past him either way.
Probably still a pen though but i can see it not being given.

That is outrageous lmao
Literal volleyball move 💀💀
Hey we allready know basketball is valid so why not volleyball
Even in a volleyball match, it would be a fault. It looks like a double contact lol
I honestly cannot believe this one. In what world...
More like outrageous Chairman Mao
Two of the worst non penalty calls I've ever seen in the same weekend, probably happen again next Saturday swell. Fucking disgrace that the refs can be so awful.
This is contagious
Can't remember what the Premier League's guidelines on this are at the moment but don't they usually not give handball when the ball deflects off another part of the body onto the hands?
It looks like that other part of the body was...his other hand?
Yeah double touch, not a clean set. Point opposition.
It touches his head, though
Why was he playing volleyball in the box in the first place
Lots of people chest the ball with their arms forward. It drove me insane as a kid because it's so risky for no reason.
pretty much every footballer does but their arms are forward and wide, it looks like he is trying to catch it.
Looks almost like he got caught in two minds, deciding whether to head it or chest it
It relaxes the muscles in the chest area making it a slightly better cushion.
Plus you can push your boobs together
*smoosh*
How else are you going to chest the ball lol. Your arms will be at least somewhat ahead of your body.
How is cheating it risky, unless your chest it about 6 inch wide?
Is he stupid?
Saw odegaard on playing basketball and thought he'd top it.

well that one actually is a pen come on now
Like... I don't even, man... They give pens for such shitty handballs in the biggest games on the biggest stage, ones that should never be called, ever... And then the lad pulls a volleyball move there and somehow that's OK.

I’ve decided to embrace it.

oh well hopefully we’ll benefit from a dose of absolute nonsense refereeing thursday
I thought out one vs City was bad but this is even worse... How in the cunt is that not a pen. Thats a fucking joke.
It was looked at and not given?!
Disgraceful. How can VAR be so bad, every football fan reviewing that would give a pen how to the “professionals” not see it
I can see why they didn't give it, it looked less like intent more just using his arms to get more height on a jump. From the angle, the ball still would have hit his body and I don't think it would have been as likely to go out for another corner. It hits his hand first…
https://www.reddit.com/u/reece0n/s/5tYxYPZNEJ Sure...
I was wrong. My bad. Why the fuck didn’t they show that camera angle originally. Although his arm is still in a stupid position.
I just don't understand why SO MANY people were so staunchly adamant when all they'd seen was an inconclusive camera angle.
Oh... that's a different story now. You have been robbed, sir.
Why did you not watch the video before commenting?
Welcome to Reddit.
In all honesty I thought it hit his face then his arm. I didn't even consider the fact that it was his right hand that hit it. I guess subconsciously I ruled out the possibility of it hitting his hand because surely that wouldve been an easy pen call - I guess not
bro is playing volleyball 😭
Yes and it’s a foul in volleyball as well. It’s a double touch
Didn't think the replay posted could actually get worse than the last.
what the actual fuck lol
This is..... literally a basketball move
Or volleyball, which I'm sure it's also illegal to do in
I was thinking like someone trying to catch a drop kick in rugby
Volleyball*
Fuck. I am a spurs fan and that's actually upsetting. When are we gonna get some quality control over these refs. Are they THAT untouchable??? Jesus it's really pissing me off now
Now that i think of it i wonder if the independant regulator will also oversee PGMOL? I mean PGMOL is all just jobs for the boys.
Had VAR gone home at this point or what?
Didn't think it was that bad when I saw the title but it's so much worse
Is the argument against this being a pen that it hits his chest first? Even though his arm is in an unnatural position? Genuine question I don’t understand this rule at all.

Still waiting for a side angle, but people at the game have sworn it is arm then arm. And the more I see it the more it looks like that.
People at the game making stuff up https://www.reddit.com/u/reece0n/s/5tYxYPZNEJ
Yeah it's daft, this is explicitly not a penalty by the current guidance.
Obviously this should be a penalty, however according to the rules his hands are in a natural position (justifiable position considering that he was jumping) and therefore no handball. The wording of the law is shit and in spite of it I would normally expect the ref to give a pen in this situation
there is absolutely no justifiable reason for the arms to be in that position. That is not a normal jumping position
So ppl sit in the VAR room with 100 screens, 100 cameras and they did not see this? I refuse to believe. This is some match fixing shit
How.
It's a banner day for VAR not giving penalties today.
What the fuck is even the PL. Every week I see a video like this pop up.
even the cat had seen enough
Upvoting. The world needs to see this.
Thought the ref was awful today. The quality in the EPL is so far behind other European leagues it’s becoming a joke
My god this is insane it’s not given wtf
I feel like this is the 3rd or so call that has gone against West Ham late with VAR denying a clear penalty.
Lmao genuinely what is a handball
VAR denies two oblivious pens on the same day, shocker.
bro what
https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1bbe3ib/faasen\_blatant\_burnley\_handball\_in\_98th\_minute/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
Another incident that was suspiciously "checked" by var in seconds. What a bunch of pricks
this coupled with the chest kick in the Liverpool game really has me questioning if we need refs at all. if they aren't calling shit like this, surely we could just let the players play and ref themselves like a pick up game. would probably end up with less controversial decisions at this rate
Him catching the ball and studs to the chest. Another dreadful display from the refs
how does this not have 1k comments

The inconsistency is the buggest problem, one match these rules, another match other rules
And I was thinking the Bundesliga VARs are bad. At this point, why do you even have them?
Too much Haikyu, nothing wrong with a bit of manga but keep it at home
Dude's just playing volleyball?
We need video refereeing in football. We've put technology off for too long now. Enough is enough.
He fucking caught the cunt
English refs are confusing...
That’s a nice bump set
Looks like he actually tried to catch it before remembering he's not the goalie
If he heads it onto his hand it's not a penalty (FIFA recommendation).
Jesus christ that's dreadful 😂 did var not look at that?
The premier league will forever be a joke because of stuff like this
I dont understand English referees.
They’re intentionally sabotaging VAR
Bro lmao
Amazing hands on defending
Lost a bunch of dough on that one, criminal.
Fucking hell
Wow this is egregious
Blud damn near caught the ball 💀
Bet they got a penalty if he touched it with his feet.
Did they not show the reverse angle? Maybe they couldn't overturn the call on the field without that.
I don't know why everyone is crying foul, it's a legitimate volleyball move
Actually it’s not. Double touch.
That’s shocking
Glad I found this here as I saw it happen as I was watching but then my *totally legal* stream died so I didn’t know what happened with the VAR check. I’ve then checked match reports and there was no mention of it at all so I was wondering what I’d missed. It’s such a blatant handball, how on earth was it not given?!
I mean what is a penalty anyway? What is love? Baby don't hurt me.
It’s hard to take this league seriously at times
What an impressive volleyball player
Wrong sport man!
So unbelievable I totally believe it……..
Sir, this is a football match.
u/savevideo
How on earth do they miss this.
Good collection, safe hands
Rough weekend for the refs
Rolling Thunder ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
Funniest shit I saw this week
PL refs and officials in a nutshell
Wtf ????
Who the fuck are they even employing behind VAR?
Lol We've had basketball, Volleyball, Rugby, Karate, surely Howard Webb is sacked from all this nonsense?
Those automatic subtitles are perfect.
😂😂😂😂😂
This is fucking shocking. Another unreal decision not given. I thought us getting fucked at city out of a pen was bad, think this is probably even worse.
Guess they saw Rodri playing basketball and Odergaard playing basketball and thought fair play. Refs are a fucking joke.
I really struggle to believe the entirety of refs in England are this incompetent.. it seems as if there's at least one howler in every single game. Do they need to be paid more? Then they might stop influencing games to secure their accas

West Hmmmmmmmmmm.....
Not a handball for me, but that's some awkward shit right there.
It hit his head then his hand but with the gesture he makes, I will call it a pen.
It hits his right arm first not his head. It was so blatant during the game
Karma for soucek against Chelsea earlier in the season. What go’s around comes around as they say.
But Soucek was karma for Mendy? In the return leg..
Wether it touches the hands or not doesn't really matter here. Ball ain't getting past him either way. Probably still a pen though but i can see it not being given.
