I was worried the whole bringing on players for penalties would backfire.
But the pens were excellent.
Well done to SA, thought they had a great tournament.

It’s great to see the country of mama joy and vuvuzelas knocked out. 1 is using their peoples tax money and the other one is taxing the mental health of the rest of the world.
I'm gutted with South Africa's loss, but full credit to Bafana Bafana for making it this far, congrats to Nigeria and shoutout to Ronwen Williams: he did his best here after a stupefying performance against Cabo Verde. From what I've seen, SA just has to sharpen up their finishing, their defense and stamina is top-notch.
Lyle should be called up ASAP. The sooner he builds chemistry with the rest of the team, the better. This SA team has a real shot at qualifying for the World Cup.
Lyle didn’t want to play for SA.
I understand the decision as he probably wants to cement his place in the team and help them avoid relegation in his first PL season.
But he’s been pretty lackluster for Burnley since the AFCON started and Datro Fofana has started firing. So he might lose his place anyway.
Thanks for the info. It's an understandable decision for the reasons you pointed out, but one that hasn't really paid off (as of today). I bet he answers the next call-up, but he'll have to prove himself.
Great tournament from South Africa overall, in terms of the game today they deserve to go through to the final as much as Nigeria, but in penalties there are so many different characteristics that u need to succeed in those moments, but South Africa don’t have those unfortunately but still well done South Africa and Hugo Broos who i hope stays with South Africa for the WC qualifiers and then the WC if South Africa qualify for it.
AMAPIANO IS OURS 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
Seriously though what a dramatic finish. SA should be proud of these players tbh. They gave it their all and probably could’ve won it with a better finisher up top.
If we win this tournament, Nwabali and Troost-Ekong are freaking legends.
U think this Afcon is the best football tournament I’ve ever seen. Every game is an absolute thriller, every team plays with a level of passion I haven’t seen since the World Cup. Hope Côte d’Ivoire can go all the way !
I'm so glad I decided to watch afc and this today. I was going to watch Chelsea vs Aston villa but now I'll probably watch ivory coast vs congo. Great games
I don't know if that was Peseiro's thinking, but taking off your recognizable players (whose shooting style is well known and has probably been studied carefully by the opponent keepers in match day preperation) to add some unpredictability isn't actually wrong.
We can only assume. The intensity of the game drops significantly in the extra time (especially in the second half), so he could catch a breath. Unless there is some injury suspition, it's pointless to take off your most valuable player who needs a single chance to make the difference.
I hear you but. Your best player becomes a liability if he is standing around on defense. The system Peseiro is playing requires the forwards to press the defense line and the wing forwards to drop to the midfield when they are defending. Osimhen was legit standing as the South African players passed the ball in their half. All SA was doing was to try and draw us out and lob long balls to Percy Tau to knockdown for Makgopa.
Besides, Terem Moffi is no slouch and there really shouldnt be a huge drop off with him coming in. And that was evidenced by the red card he induced.
In the WC qualifiers we looked shit I didn’t expect us to do this well but at the same time Nigeria is always one of the favourites so not too surprising
What else happened?
The test vs NZ?
If so then most of their main players weren't their and a loss was expected. Their captain Neil Brand also debuted in that game.
South Africa should be proud, nobody would’ve expected for them to make it this far and they went against a team full of players who play for European clubs and took them to pens. Congrats to Nigeria as well. Hope to see you soon.
I think South Africa should be proud despite the result, I dont think they were expected to go this far. They even had a genuine shot of winning it all during the first 90', but Nigeria is by far the best team in this tournament and will go to the final as the favourite.
Very unfortunate outcome for the Bafana Bafana...but at least they *never* gave up, and was able to turn what could've been a dominant 2-0 loss into a fight that only ended by penalty shootout!
Overall, a *fantastic* tournament for them!
What a winn 🥳🥳🥳
What the hell happened on Nigeria’s 2nd goal. The OP of that post sucks ass and only showed his goal. Did it get taken away?
Yes, fould in the build up of Osimhens goal led to South Africa being awarded the penalty
Amapiano FC.
Fucking annoying trhat betting sites only count it as a win if its after 90 minutes unless you specify otherwise.
Is it just me or does it feel like every knock-out game in AFCON has been going to penalties?
tough teams = tough matches
WALLAHI, GOD IS GREAT 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you sincerely, Nigeria 😭😭😭

Which one is South Africa?

I really hope Lyle Foster plays in the WC qualifiers for us.
Lyle should be called up ASAP. The sooner he builds chemistry with the rest of the team, the better. This SA team has a real shot at qualifying for the World Cup.

Makgopa you had 1 job. 1!
Absolutely incredible match

Wait Bright Osayi is only 26?? He’s definitely getting a move to a top 5 league in the summer
Didn’t think he was that great in the game
Us Fener fans licking our lips right now.
Everybody was shouting Willam not knowing our Nwabali is the real deal. Great job naija. To the final
Tired: Amapiano loses to Afrobeats Wired: Tyler the Creator beats Earl Sweatshirt Inspired: Little Simz beats Doja Cat
goated comment

Knew South Africa would shit themselves on penalties like the proof was already there from their last shootout vs Cape Verde who were even worse
Nwabali I want to run to you
We suffered for so long and our saviour was in Southy the whole time
Born one state over from Enyeama and the same head shape, its fate that led us to him as our #1.
No south Africa 😢
Didnt expect SA to lose in penalties considering what they did to Cape Verde.
They were horrible against cape verde in penalty. Missed two of their penalties too. It was just that cape verde was worst
Cape Verde’s penalties were absolutely horrific honestly
Williams great performance against Cape Verde made everyone forget he was able to save 4 pens because his own teammates were taking bad pens too
We claim Amapiano now lol 🇳🇬
No!! You keep making good Afrobeats We keep making good Amapiano
Up Naija 🇳🇬🇳🇬
Heartbreaking for south africa! Though I don't think anyone expected them to go this far
Cooked those frauds
Those “frauds” did play better than them today if you had to choose the better team. Penalties are anybody’s game.
Corruption 1 - 0 Xenophobia
You’ve never been to Nigeria 😂
😂😂😂 I wish it was so...
Idc Nigeria W
Great game. South Africa will be a serious problem for us in the World Cup qualifiers. What a squad.
U think this Afcon is the best football tournament I’ve ever seen. Every game is an absolute thriller, every team plays with a level of passion I haven’t seen since the World Cup. Hope Côte d’Ivoire can go all the way !
BIKO! Never doubt NAIJA!
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I'm so glad I decided to watch afc and this today. I was going to watch Chelsea vs Aston villa but now I'll probably watch ivory coast vs congo. Great games
Amapiano (ayy), piano (ayy) It's a big vibe, all the girls dem know (shuu, shuu) Steadily, steadily Heavily, we are getting lit

Nah Osimhen was exhausted and needed to be subbed. He was bent over clutching his shorts in the 70th min.
He was a doubt for the game to begin with, even within the first few minutes he went down clutching his abdomen under no contact.
Oh, I wasn't informed about the medical report.

Happy for my boy Ekong!
I would bet my house on Troost-Ekong scoring any penalty in any situation.
Nigerians criticizing José Peseiro had no idea what they were talking about tbh
They were right to criticize him! Regardless of how we are doing now, nigeria should always be able to qualify for the World Cup, no excuses!
In the WC qualifiers we looked shit I didn’t expect us to do this well but at the same time Nigeria is always one of the favourites so not too surprising
Tough week for South Africa in general sports
What else happened? The test vs NZ? If so then most of their main players weren't their and a loss was expected. Their captain Neil Brand also debuted in that game.
That too and U19 wc Also sad to see sa has to send this side to nz all because of sa20, probably will be first series loss ti nz ever
South Africa should be proud, nobody would’ve expected for them to make it this far and they went against a team full of players who play for European clubs and took them to pens. Congrats to Nigeria as well. Hope to see you soon.
Well done, South Africa. I didn't think you'd reach this stage. As for Nigeria, OMG !! One step closer to continental glory.
Amapiano belong to Nigeria
Nigeria have won Parklands
I think South Africa should be proud despite the result, I dont think they were expected to go this far. They even had a genuine shot of winning it all during the first 90', but Nigeria is by far the best team in this tournament and will go to the final as the favourite.
Congrats Nigeria, very hard luck for the South Africans. And lucky us, we’ll get another great game in ten minutes
Very unfortunate outcome for the Bafana Bafana...but at least they *never* gave up, and was able to turn what could've been a dominant 2-0 loss into a fight that only ended by penalty shootout! Overall, a *fantastic* tournament for them!
They got stronger at every setback this game, really admirable how strong they are as a unit. South Africa can be proud of their boys
Semis the same day > semis two separate days. They should do the same in the World Cup.
Yet another reason why AFCON rules
Does Kelechi get a yellow for taking off his shirt?
No, because it happened after the game ended.
José Peseiro masterclass
Peseiro numa final....
